Replaying Dark Souls 1 one thing I noticed is that it has something in common with 2 (and to a slight extent Bloodborne and to a STRONG degree Elden Ring) that it doesn’t have in common with 3: the ability to restrategize.

If you hit a roadblock in DS1 or DS2 more often than not you can try fighting the boss in a different way, or leaving the area and fighting a different boss to get stronger, or maybe going somewhere else and focusing on a different objective altogether. For whatever flaws they have (which they have many, believe me), they’re rewarding to scrappy players that are willing to put in the time to make progress in some way even if they don’t have what it takes to win the next pressing story boss fight yet.

Dark Souls 3? Not so much. Get stuck on a boss fight? Sorry, probably no secret trick to knock down even just a quarter of their health. No later-game area you can pop into to loot some items or get a feel until you stop by later. No warp points or shortcuts to other areas. No shops with hidden helpful items. You encounter a boss? You’ll struggle to learn when to put those i-frames to use until you get past it, almost no exceptions. Even the 2nd paid DLC is strictly gated until you’ve either basically cleared the main game or beaten the first DLC’s boss, a boss NOTORIOUS for being gruelingly tough. There isn’t even a particularly efficient way to level grind until nearly the game’s final area should you feel you just don’t have the stats you need.

At the end of the day it felt like Dark Souls 3’s motto was “the only way forward is through”. That game had some STELLAR late game areas, really cool gear, and intriguing DLC sections too. I can never bring myself to appreciate them as much though because anytime I think of DS3 I just think of the awful tedious grind it is to get through most of that game.

okay wait so last night i was thinking about how “the tragedy of this part is that armand doesn’t give a fuck about claudia” and how claudia’s journals survived despite them being a violation of the laws. idk if the next episodes will show how that negotiation took place buttt i was thinking about the preservation of her diaries and the use of the gloves and i realized. wasn’t it armand who originally gave daniel the gloves. he brought the diaries to daniel as rashid and told him to use gloves….and i think that after that we DON’T see daniel using gloves with them when he’s talking to louis if i’m not mistaken. it isn’t until the second season when armand is present for the interview that the gloves are brought back and that’s when daniel addresses how using gloves is not the archival standard and could cause more harm to the diaries. which we’ve talked before about in relation to louis BUT i think it’s colored wildly differently when you consider the influence of armand who didn’t care about claudia and is actively against the transcription of vampire history……

Sebastian Vael: *had, at the very minimum, neglectful if not outright emotionally abusive parents, was basically kidnapped and sent to the chantry against his will, decided to stay in the chantry bc Elthina actually gave him a choice which no other figure in his life had done to that point, found peace and belonging in the chantry, then found out his entire family was murdered, leaving him with massive survivor’s guilt and a throne he’s not even sure it’s right for him to reclaim, breaks his vows to the chantry to chase revenge which he immediately feels even more guilt about, finds out it was an old family friend that ordered his family’s deaths so that’s a fun betrayal he has to deal with, is torn between the peace of the chantry and his loyalty to Elthina or his duty to his home city and people of Starkhaven, despite all the trauma tries to stay optimistic and genuinely wants to help people, never preaches to a unwilling audience and instead engages in actual dialogue about his faith, seriously homeboy even acknowledges the chantry’s flaws but has hope it could be made better, opts to stay in Kirkwall to protect his pseudo-mother figure Elthina from a potential mage rebellion, only for her to die in a catastrophic explosion along with several of his brothers and sisters in the faith, whom he likely knew longer than he’d ever known Hawke and Co., and the chantry that he called home for more than a decade is also lost, and the guy who did it is literally right to next to him ranting about how he had no other choice but to commit wholesale murder, so he is understandably consumed by rage and grief and isn’t in the best state of mind, but if you kill the guy who murdered his chantry family he’s basically a ride or die no matter side of the mage-templar war you choose*

hmmm last time we saw akutagawa in regular clothes he was with aya and bram. my theory is that new-outfit-akutagawa is not from an alternate universe, aya and bram just dressed him up.

my proof? he’s wearing aya’s color scheme and is in some weird attire only bram could have come up with

thinking… so charlie got inspiration because he made a funny joke in episode 97. and that inspiration is literally the only reason gillion didn’t die in this episode. my god if charlie hadn’t made a pin gill would have fucking died

the clouds drift by, lulling willow into a hazy peace, warm afternoon sun drifting over her. the weather is perfect today, which means everyone has been sprayed down with sunscreen before they all drove out on the beach. ms. camila supplied them with ice pops- all gone by now- willow’s mouth still tastes like berry punch. hunter and amity are with Luz still trying to figure out swimming, gus and vee have gone off with ms. camila to find them a good spot for lunch. 

she can hear the drop next to her as someone collapses in the sand and when willow turns her head she doesn’t expect hunter to be right there. his hair is wet, flopped over his face messily and willow wants to sweep it aside but her bones feel as if they've melted away. “i can’t do it,” he says, frustration heavy in his tone. there’s no space to get a word in. “i can’t figure it out, i can’t figure anything out.”

her brows furrow. “we’re not just talking about swimming are we?”

hunter turns away, his eyes quickly cast to the sky. 

“hey,” she stretches her hand out, setting it on hunter’s cold arm, “we can figure it out together, okay?”

his eyes are hard, but he seems to relax a little and willow opens her mouth to say something else but he lifts himself from the sand, and offers her his hand. “let’s figure it out.”
