Why Do Character Question The Supernatural's Existence In Sonic?

So due to I think it was Tailstube or a Twitter Takeover, Shadow scoffed at the idea of ghosts existing which got me thinking. The Sonic World is filled with all kinds of ghosts and supernatural occurrences which makes me question why do characters in-universe doubt the existence of the supernatural.

The Boos, Boom Boos, and King Boom Boo from the Adventure, Rivals games are just one example. In Sonic The Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles you have the Hyudoros. And in Sonic Unleashed: Night of the Werehog some ghosts appear as well.

Meanwhile you have the gods known as Light and Dark Gaia.

You have whatever is going on with the storybook games.

Finally you have character likes Amy Rose displaying some level of magical abilites.

Jailhouse Rock

Breaking Out of Acmetropolis' Highest Security Prison hadn't exactly been Docko's plan, but then again he was never much the planner.

Docko's break out is similiar to Stitch's, though between his fear and confusion it ends up being a far more bloody affair.

TLDR: When the Loonatics arrived to transport a prisoner back to their home planet, one idiot guards trigger finger leads to a mass escape after Docko copies Tech's powers in a panicked bite. Docko meets Mastermind, whom he releases in his panic. Mastermind offers him to join her and a few friends, to which he agrees.

I promise it makes sense.

The Loonatics aid was request when moving in incredibly violent, criminally insane prisoner known as Experiment D-0oC back to its home planet of Anvilania to face its upcoming trial for its crimes against humanity.

However, when they arrive, they find a very different character to move. A malnourished, terrified character who has taken to some rather harmful habits in his isolated cell.

Unfortunately, before anyone can get any answers, the prisoner's sedatives wear, causing him to jerk forward, startling the very new, very nervous guard into firing, dislodging the muzzle keeping the prisoner's mouth closed.

The prisoner, in his panic, instinctively bites down on the closest "threat" and attempts to take it out.

Today was the day Tech learned that he could regrow limbs, even after they'd been removed off his body and destroyed, or in this case, digested.

In the chaos, the prisoner slips past the guards, nearly biting Danger's head off literally when he teleports directly in front of him, and tears off the door with his newly freed and bloodied teeth.

The Loonatics chase after him after seeing that Tech's arm properly regenerates, though his armor and sleeve are notably missing.

As Docko runs around the facility, he finds himself feeling better with each step as Tech's molecular regeneration slowly restores his body from the damage it'd taken from the last year. It's not perfect, but he's functioning and able to think clearly for the first time in months.

Despite eating his way through four doors though, he still isn't any closer to an exit and these alarms are getting very annoying.

Luckily(?), he's managed to stumble across some prisoners more experienced with the intricacies of the Acmetropolis' Prisons.

Mastermind, realizes quickly that the strange puppy-like alien before her has an ability similar to Sypher's without the inflated ego, tricks him into opening her cell door (with his coyote arm being a genetic match from Tech for the palm reader and blood sample as well as the acquired muscle memory for the code).

Knowing his chances of gaining the Loonatics sympathy are out the window, he agrees to join her in breaking out, letting out Massive and Weathervane as well. (Sypher is pointedly left behind, despite his abilities because they frankly don't trusts him even if he can strip the loonatics of their powers.

i do love how Heartsteel verse is the one verse where Rhaast can actually exist separately from Kayn for 90% of the time. altho he does have a plushie form he reverts to to help conserve energy ( because he ultimately feeds off of kayn's strong emotions, allowing him to have physical form in the first place ). why does he have a plushie form? because i think it's funny and i want him to cause absolute havoc upon any poor bastard foolish enough to try and pick him up, thinking he's cute until he quite literally bites their hand

in your Rules and Guidelines you say mildly dubious consent is okay. is mildly dubious consent like. for instance, the non-monster is in a situation where they are non-consensually given or sold, but they are received by a monster who gives them as much choice as they could possibly have under the circumstances, courts them with their consent, and is only ever interested in maintaining the non-monster's overall wellbeing?

is that mildly dubious in a correct way? or is that too dubious?

Hey anon!

While there's no solidly definable line between mildly dubcon and dubcon, it's all spectrum, we generally use "mild dubcon" to reflect cases where consent is fairly clear but not explicitly given. The kind of "I just couldn't resist any more, so I kissed him, oh thank fuck he's into it" kind of situation. It's mostly included as an option for this anthology on the assumption that there's a lot of types of monsters and consent will likely look different for different creatures, and some monsters may not be capable of human speech and therefore unable to give explicit spoken consent. We want people to know that if they want to write a story where consent looks different than the standard explicit consent in human/human relationships, we're all ears for that.

I know that this description of "mildly dub con" is so close to consent that most people wouldn't even tag for it; it's just a choice that we've made as a press, as some readers are uncomfortable when consent isn't explicit. We absolutely do not require explicit consent for our stories, and consent also doesn't have to be spoken to still be clearly explicit, and there are plenty of other examples I could give, the one above is just the instance that's come up most often in our tagging. Mild dubcon should still, ultimately, amount to: it becomes pretty clear that all involved parties are into it, even if it's not clear at first, and there's no mindfuckery (such as power dynamics, magic, drugs, psionics, age difference, etc.) involved that'd make it harder for someone to give true consent.

As to a slave situation such as you describe, that's definitely a "power dynamic mindfuckery" case. I think it'd depend on the story and the characterizations where on the dubcon spectrum that would fall. If the slave creature really has no way out, I'd probably lean toward dubious consent (rather than mild) even if the courtship and everything was with their apparent consent. When one person is owned by another, their ability to give true consent is inextricably linked with that.

As long as the ownership situation exists, if the owned creature has no escape option and hasn't been freed... how much choice do they really have? What are the consequences if they refuse, and what would happen to them if they were actually free? Whether what you describe is mild dub con or dub con, or even extreme dub con or non con, would depend on the answers to those questions, in my opinion. Like, if the consequence for the owned entity is either enslavement or death, does any consent they give really mean much? Which isn't at all to say that being enslaved removes freewill, obviously it doesn't and a person who is enslaved can give meaningful consent, but as a reader, especially if I'm not seeing the story from the slave's point of view, I'd always have to wonder how much concern for their own wellbeing (understandably!) colors every decision they make. On the other hand, if the consequences for the owned entity is like, enslavement or mild inconvenience of some kind? That's different, because even the enslavement itself is sort of a choice and the entity has made that choice.

There's no hard-and-fast rule, and as I essentially acknowledged when I described what we categorize as mild dub con, I personally tag quite conservatively in this regard, but I'd say most master/slave situations would fall under more-than-mild dubcon, especially with the premise you've given, where the slavery was never the owned individuals choice (like, in BDSM/Total Power Exchange, that's an example of a master/slave relationship that could be 100% consensual. Such situations absolutely exist.)...but yeah, in a situation where the entire premise of the master/slave situation is nonconsensual, it's not that easy for me to see how the slave's choices won't at least somewhat be colored by their straits, especially if the consequences of non-enslavement are severe, especially if we don't see their point of view, and especially if the owner never frees them.

TL:DR It's not a dynamic I would recommend for this anthology, though I can definitely conceive of examples that follow this basic premise that would fall more under mild dub-con. It sounds like an interesting story and one I'd enjoy, just not really what we're looking for here.

Given that you get something like this whenever you backtrack after completing any of the mouse puzzles in Cyber City:

I like to think that Rouxls had been following Kris/the Fun Gang around for a decent chunk of time prior to his fight. At least during the City section of the Cyber World, anyway; before then, he was probably doing all the stuff that Swatch and Sweet, Cap'n, and K_K talked about. And after that he was preparing for his battle with them in the Acid River.

Exactly why he was following them, I haven't decided. What feels the most likely to me though is that he was searching for Noelle, since he had overheard that Queen was looking for her and wanted to impress her by capturing Noelle himself and delivering her to her. But he uh. Didn't actually know what Noelle looked like, so he never realized that the new reindeer Lightner that Kris was exploring with was the person he was looking for. ...And then he also got distracted by the Inferiore Puzzles That Daredst To Showeth Their Patheticke Faces To Him; The Great Duke Of Puzzles dgshshdfs.

It's also possible that Rouxls was teleporting back and forth between Kris & Noelle and Susie & Ralsei, spying on both pairs (since hey, if he was looking for this "Noelle" person who he didn't know the appearance of, why would he exclusively stick around Kris?). And if so, that opens up the possibility for a thread (or multiple) with Susie and/or Ralsei to be set during that time!

Though... Perhaps there was also a (very very small, he would insist) part of him that wanted to check in on Kris specifically, because he knew that Lancer was still with them.
