Medical researchers at the University of Calgary say a condition affecting autonomic bodily processes — those that occur automatically, such as heart rate, bladder function and sweating — is frequently found in people diagnosed with long COVID.

The condition is known as dysautonomia, an umbrella term for a group of related conditions. Support networks for those who suffer from it are working to raise awareness throughout October, which has been deemed Dysautonomia Awareness Month by the advocacy group, Dysautonomia International.

According to research by Dr. Satish Raj, a cardiologist and expert in autonomic health conditions at the University of Calgary, as many as 30 per cent of long COVID patients also meet the criteria for a condition called POTS, a form of dysautonomia known as “postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.”

According to Dysautonomia International, other studies have put the figure at between 70 per cent and 90 per cent.

The challenge is that the symptoms of the condition can be easy to dismiss. “Who likes to sit around and talk about their sweating,” notes Dr. Raj. “No one does that… These are just the background things that are useful for keeping you alive.”

Rashmin Hira, a PhD student at the Universty of Calgary and long COVID researcher, adds, “Unfortunately, a lot of people do get told that it’s just anxiety.”

That’s why raising awareness through events such as Dysautonomia Month are important, says Lauren Stiles, president and CEO of Dysautonomia International.

“(It) is one way that we help people get diagnosed faster,” Stiles says. “It’s also really important to raise awareness so that we can interest government and investors and other people to fund research in this group of diseases.”

When it comes to POTS, symptoms can include lightheadedness, nausea, blood pooling and a high heart rate. The most common treatments include increase intake of fluids and salt and, if possible, recumbent exercise.

But even if the symptoms and treatment of POTS appear subtle, it is nothing to take lightly, Stiles says. Thirty per cent of people with the condition rely on a wheelchair to get around and many others are unable to work.

“There are millions of people who really, really suffer from autonomic disorders,” Stiles says. “We want to build support and compassion for these patients in their communities so that they can get access to the resources that they need.”

Dysautonomia International is encouraging those who want to show support during the awareness month to share information with friends and family, participate in events, raise funds and wear a turquoise scarf.

Since most of the elected officials in the state government of FL are fascits this will pass and will be signed and will go into effect on July 1, 2023. and will IMIDIATELY cause problems, because that's the middle of summer semesters in the Florida State Universty System, who will, under House Bill 999, be in chaos trying to meet the demands of this bill, which are numerous and dangerous.

According to it's summary this bill is:

An act relating to public postsecondary educational institutions; amending s. 1001.706, F.S.; requiring the Board of Governors to periodically review specified information relating to state universities and provide certain direction to such universities; revising the contents of the Board of Governor's strategic plan; authorizing state universities to initiate post-tenure reviews at any time for cause; amending s. 1001.7065, F.S.; revising the academic and research excellence standards for preeminent state research universities; creating s. 1001.725, F.S.; providing requirements for hiring state university faculty; authorizing state university boards of trustees to review the tenure status of faculty members; requiring such boards to confirm the selection and reappointment of specified personnel; providing requirements for certain employment contracts and responsibilities; requiring state university presidents to annually present specified information to such boards; amending s. 1004.06, F.S.; providing that certain entities may not expend funds for certain purposes relating to activities that violate a specified law; providing exceptions; amending s. 1004.6496, F.S.; conforming a provision to changes made by the act; amending s. 1004.6499, F.S.; renaming the "Florida Institute of Politics" as the "Florida Institute for Governance and Civics"; revising the goals of the institute; amending s. 1004.64991, F.S.; authorizing the Adam Smith Center for the Study of Economic Freedom within Florida International University to take specified actions; amending s. 1007.25, F.S.; revising the duties and responsibilities of specified faculty committees relating to general education core courses; deleting a provision authorizing certain course maximums to be exceeded; revising requirements for general education core courses; requiring public postsecondary educational institutions to offer and accept certain credits for certain general education core courses; creating s. 1007.55, F.S.; providing legislative findings; requiring the Articulation Coordinating Committee to submit certain courses to the State Board of Education and the Board of Governors; providing requirements for general education courses; providing requirements for public postsecondary educational institutions and their presidents and boards of trustees relating to general education courses; providing an effective date.

As it is written in the text of the actuall bill, the above is a single 2 page long sentence. I have adjusted the formating by adding paragraph breaks after each semicolon because I can't read it clearly as written in the bill.

It is February 24, 2023. This bill, as I said earlier, most likely going to pass. This is a problem both because of it's deadline and because of it's content. Just one of the many things not explicitly made clear in the summary is that it will require universities to report on its highest and lowest performing degrees with regards to job placement to the board of governors.

It also will efectively end tenure and make professors volunerable to the whims of both the board of governors and the individual university presidents.

It redefines "preeminent research institution," a thing with an industry standard definition, and will hand that title out to Universities that meet the new state definition (this will trick potential students into applying to schools that are NOT in fact preeminent research institutions)

Everyone should just go read page 13 where they kill the DEI programs, and tenure, and contracts for administrators.

There's this paragraph starting at the bottom of page 19 that does the exact opposite of what it's commanding and will lead to accrediting issues (a thing the institutions are already concerned about because the governor is already requiring a change in accrediting body)

General education core courses may not suppress or distort significant historical events or include a curriculum that teaches identity politics, such as Critical Race Theory, or defines American history as contrary to the creation of a new nation based on universal principles stated in the Declaration of Independence.

The Legislature finds it necessary that every undergraduate student of a public postsecondary educational institution in the state graduates as an informed citizen through participation in rigorous general education courses that promote the values necessary to preserve the constitutional republic through traditional, historically accurate, and high quality coursework. Courses with a curriculum based on unproven, theoretical, or exploratory content are best suited to fulfill elective or specific program prerequisite credit requirements, rather than general education credit requirements.

This is not education this is indoctronation. This is using edicational institutions as a politial weapon. This is facism. This is not JUST Ron DeSantis, and what Ron DeSantis is doing is not JUST putting on a show for voters.

In daily life, my mood mostly stable. It's maybe because of I start universty and far from home. However, I have to back home in summer holiday because I have no place to stay expect family home. I never love my born-place. Probably this trigger my angry issue indirectly. In my opinion, one of the most most triggering thing is my MOM. She is the reaason of anger managment problem. In my childhood, I always lived with chaos. Family fight is okey for family but I saw something I shouldn't see that. I heard something I shouldn't see that as a kid. She was the most reason of chaos. Also it was unhappy marriage and She would take her anger out on us. She has caused me mental wounds that cannot be healed. She always compared with me other children. She just said good words when I was succesful student in school or won a prize from tournaments. She was under a lot of pressure while preparing for the middle school exam. I could be in better high school with my success but I lost my control because of this over-pressure. After the exam and started high school, I made attempts to destroy her hegemony over me. I slowly broke her hegemony. She understood my attemp and couldn't give a reaction much. I feel so tired right now, I will finish the story second part.

Luke: Luke’s nearing finishing his second year of UG and he’s still a bit undecided. This has not gone unnoticed and he’s been pressured to choose a major already. He’s got fine grades in pretty well everything he’s tried but Universties don’t tend to offer the same stuff as trade colleges do and part of the problem is that Siemon is perpetually kind of lightly trying to pry him off his leg and stand up to Michael to let him do culinary school. In the end he does, but at some point, he takes some night classes in Theology. 

Barbatos: Barbatos is the executive assistant to Diavolo’s head of the department. Barbatos has himself several degrees, it’s not unusual for that to happen. He’s even been known to guest-lecture now and then or even do a TED Talk. Mostly though, he orders books for the TA’s, makes sure the Grad Office printer isn’t out of paper, ensures no one books the spare office for TA time on top of eachother and ...oh if you aren’t giving the University money, Dr. Diavolo doesn’t have time for you. (Really he wants to, he misses being a prof and sometimes side-eyes Siemon for resisting it bigtime) but Barbatos is there to ensure that the whole department runs smoothly. It does. But that said, he is quite aware of every time someone downloads or checks out his thesis paper. He also knows every. Single. Horrible. Little Weird bit of nonsense that goes on in day-to-day life in the university. And remains silent, even if Asmo tries to get him to talk. (As an aside: I have done this job, I just basically described doing my own job.) Thirteen:  Thirteen’s the tenured prof you can’t get rid of. No she’s unbelievably good at her job and super knowledgeable but she is 120% aware she’s good at her job, earned her spot and she can do what-ever-she-likes as she’s there now forever and no one can touch her. Now in some cases this is pretty cool. She teaches some fun classes. She’s a bit like Levi in that she kind of comes out with some very out of the box stuff that is very rooted in its’ discipline. On the other hand, she can be as petty, vindictive and horrible as she likes with her grading, she definitely plays favourites and is very fond of trap questions where your only fighting chance is - maybe if you’re an undergrad who couldn’t possibly have read her thesis - being someone who is in agreement with her thought processes...or...if you know the trick, agreeing with her. Sucks to be you if you try to challenge though. Even if you’re right...that’s an unfair advantage. Raphael:  A young, VERY YOUNG Research Assistant and TA and while he’s smart and knowledgeable has had a bit of bad luck with people who’d take advantage of his inexperience. As such he has a hard streak and is very inflexible - you’re not getting a deadline extension from him. It’s not his fault, truly, he needs to learn some things and one of them is a bit of tolerance for the fact that students learn differently. He’s not much for the TA part of his discipline (but could become a little kinder with time) but he’s a wonderful lab and RA. He’s just young - he thinks he needs to be badass. It’ll take time but he’ll mellow. When he does he’ll still be kind of a hard marker but he won’t quite take the ‘I need to BE BADASS AND PROVE IT!’ route so much.

Week 3.1 Reflection

This lesson involved a guest speaker as well as a tutorial on how to gather reliable research to use for our projects. The highlight of this class was one of the discussions I had with one of the student lecturer’s about the colour used and specialising the topic. Both suggestions sounded interesting and is something which I will consider. I would like to focus this reflection on his suggestion to move the topic to target uni students. My current topic is revolved around gratitude and being thankful for what  you have. I think that small reminders throughout the day would be a great way of approaching this from a design standpoint, however this topic could be changed slightly to something that I could relate to. I am grateful to be granted the opportunity to study at a tertairy level. Anxiety and depression at uni is a common amongst universty students (11%). I think that students should be made aware that they are blessed to be given this opportunity. The objctive of this project would be to reduce this by helping students to appreciate what they have around them. This would be good as it would give my project and issue, and a way to resolve it.
