David Skrbina was a senior lecturer in philosophy at the University of Michigan, Dearborn from 2003 to 2018 and more recently at the University of Helsinki. While he was in Dearborn he was an active supporter of BDS, writing op-eds and being interviewed as a leading BDS campaigner on campus.
His personal webpage has a statement written soon after the October 7 attacks, saying,
STATEMENT ON PALESTINE (1 Nov 2023) I call on all people of conscience to stand with Palestine, and against the criminal Jewish state. I call on everyone to boycott, divest, and sanction Israel -- permanently. Through their criminal actions, they have forfeited their right to exist. Recall the words of Martin Heidegger: "planetary master criminals" (in Trawny, Heidegger and the Myth of a Jewish World Conspiracy; 2015: 33)
That Heidegger quote is curious. Most people believe that his writings about "planetary master criminals" refers to Jews. He elsewhere wrote about “the basis for the peculiar predetermination of Jewry [Judenschaft] for planetary criminality," which aligns with Skrbina's emphasis on the "criminal Jewish state."
This suggests that Skrbina's hate for Israel is not political but antisemitic. Now we now that is true.
The Southern Poverty Law Center reveals that Skrbina had another persona, "Thomas Dalton PhD.," who is an infamous and prolific neo-Nazi antisemitic author and Holocaust denier. The ADL describes him:
Thomas Dalton, likely a pseudonym, is an author with numerous Holocaust denial works. ...He has emerged as an unbridled antisemite and Holocaust denier, including by suggesting that “Jews caused World War Two.” He refutes that there was a master plan to murder Jews and claims only 500,000 died at the hands of the Nazis. His books include The Jewish Hand in the World Wars and Debating the Holocaust, and he has edited and/or provided introductions and commentary for numerous editions of Hitler’s Mein Kampf and other antisemitic works. He is a frequent contributor to antisemitic and Holocaust denial publications such as The Barnes Review and the Occidental Observer.

Along the lines of two billboards placed earlier in the month on I-275 highway—west of Dearborn, Mich.—by the local branch of the Zionist Organization of America, a new sign was placed on US-23 near Ann Arbor on April 22, calling for the University of Michigan to “Stop Jew Hatred on Campus.”
It comes in the wake of threats, harassment, intimidation and discrimination against Jewish students at the public institution.
“The university has failed to respond to concerned students, parents and alumni who have contacted U of M, urging that it take action to stop violations of their own code of conduct and infractions of the law. We put up the billboard in hopes of getting their attention,” said Sheldon Freilich, president of ZOA-Michigan. “It’s time for enforcement—there must be serious consequences for those breaking the law and inciting antisemitism.”
Following the Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel on Oct. 7, ZOA-Michigan said it has received numerous complaints from U of M students who fear for their safety. The situation has been exacerbated, it added, by pro-Hamas demonstrations on campus and in campus buildings calling for the end of Israel and the genocide of Jews, often punctuated by Nazi symbols and slogans.
In the weeks leading up to finals and graduation, antisemitic hostilities have reached a dangerous pitch.
Senior Salma Hamamy, a 22-year-old Palestinian American and the president of Students Allied for Freedom and Equality (SAFE), stated on her Instagram page on March 22: “Until my last breath, I will utter death to every single individual who supports the Zionist state. Death and more. Death and worse.”
She was arrested in November at an anti-Israel sit-in at the office of the university’s president, Santo Ono, and in February was part of a stand-off with riot police near Detroit at a campaign event for U.S. President Joe Biden. This week, she was one part of the pro-Palestinian and pro-Hamas activists that set up a tent encampment on school grounds.
In January, the University of Michigan honored Hamamy and SAFE with the 2024 Spirit of MLK Jr. Award for “exemplifying Dr. King’s leadership and extraordinary vision.”
In the last two months alone, two federal civil-rights complaints have been filed against U of M for failing to safeguard Jewish students.

Meet the Arab Americans, whose heritage is a roadmap to education
Have you ever visited the Arab American National Museum or checked out their book awards, film festivals and concerts? The museum “provides people with a more authentic and real representation of what it means to be Arab American.”
“We communicate the American narrative in the voices of Arab Americans. They express their experiences in their own words,” says Diana Abouali, director of the Arab American National Museum, located in Dearborn, Michigan.
Arab immigrant stories aren’t well-known among mainstream America. And what little Americans do know about Arabs is often informed by negative stereotypes.
Arab Americans are a diverse community that come from 22 Arab countries stretching from northern Africa to western Asia. But once they settle in the U.S., the museum director says, they become as American as they are Arab.

Ralph Nader is known for his lifetime of activism and fearless critique. Yet in this fresh and inspiring book The Seventeen Traditions: Lessons from an American Childhood, Nader takes a look backward - at a serene and enriching childhood spent in bucolic Winsted, Connecticut.
In his most personal writing to date, Nader fondly describes his father’s restaurant and how it taught him about work, community, how to share in the spirit of others, along with the value of his mother’s Lebanese cooking and how it defined his relationship with his heritage.

"Interstellar Guide to the Planet Earth" by TJ Klune
By the end of this guide, you will have been given the tools in order to safely and carefully visit Earth. If you should have further questions, please see Glorbak the Destroyer of Worlds, who will be happy to answer any inquiries you may have.
Remember: Exploration is the key to survival!
1. You meant to travel to the HUMAN LAND OF DEARBORNE MICHIGAN, but because of the bending of space and time, you accidentally ended up in the dark place known as TALLAHASEE FLORIDA. Do not fret! Though Florida is considered an area where dreams go to die (also see THE HUMAN LAND OF TEXAS), there are many wonderful things to discover, such as bugs, humidity, reptiles and HUMANS called JESSICA who chew loudly while running a business called a NAIL SALON. This is used to sharpen the talons of humans, and to paint them different colors. Though not much is known about this tradition, it is thought that it grants powers to the HUMANS who visit this establishment.
2. Oh no! While exploring the HUMAN LAND OF NORTH YORKSHIRE ENGLAND, you happen to see a GREY disguised as a chimney sweep. As you are well aware, GREYS are an odious species whose entire way of life is built around anal probing. Though we have a treaty with the GREYS, it is important to remember that anal probing does not provide any scientific and/or medical knowledge. Given that the GREYS have the technology to do non-invasive full body scans, it’s unknown why they continue to proceed through the back entrance. If you come across a GREY preparing to do just that, please remind them that it is against RULE 5#$7^45J to proceed with anal probing without the expressed permission of the one being probed. Consent is important no matter what part of the universe you are in!
"Interstellar Guide to the Planet Earth" by TJ Klune
3. HUMAN HOLES. Though it may seem disgusting to an elevated species, HUMANS evolved to have multiple holes in their bodies. Do not be scared! These are imperative to their survival. We have already discussed one hole (the anus), but did you know that humans have several more? The most diabolical is the hole in the top parts of their bodies, otherwise known as a MOUTH. Inside the MOUTH is a wet piece of muscle surrounded by shards of bone that pierce through the flesh. This is, as far as we can tell, a “feeding hole”, the bones used to break up sustenance, and the muscle inside swirls it around. In addition, there are glands in the MOUTH HOLE that create lubrication. It is unknown if this lubricant is poisonous. If you should see a HUMAN leaking lubricant from its MOUTH HOLE, it is either a) hungry or b) getting ready to attack. One line of thought is that the lubrication allows HUMANS to breathe fire, though no evidence of this has been noted.
4. Most HUMANS have communication devices they carry around with them at all times. Interestingly, these devices seem to have an unintended consequence: not one of them could survive without it. If, on the off chance, you find yourself surrounded by a mob of HUMANS CARRYING TORCHES AND PITCHFORKS, tell them you are going to take their communication devices away. Most likely, they will crumble and dissolve into LEAKING LUBRICANT FROM THEIR EYE HOLES, begging you not to do what you said. Some have suggested that the HUMAN’S life forces are tethered to these devices, and if they are taken away, there is a chance the HUMANS will turn feral.
5. And finally, the most important: DO NOT ASK HUMANS WHO THEY VOTED FOR. On Earth, people “choose” their leaders on a special day filled with love and celebration and good feelings. However, the HUMANS elected are oft considered “really bad at their job” and “unable to speak in coherent sentences.” In a fascinating turn of events, the HUMANS appear to be rare creatures who are somewhat advanced, but also continually make terrible decisions just because they’re mad about certain things that have no basis in reality. If you do make the mistake of asking a HUMAN who they voted for, chances are you will be stuck in a conversation that will last as long as the life of a star. The only way to get out of said conversation is to announce you voted for the other leader running in the election. This will most likely incense the speaker to say things like, “DAMN YOU, YOU DON’T CARE ABOUT ANYTHING BUT YOURSELF” before leaving. Congratulations, you survived an encounter!

anyway if you live in the US go vote 'uncommitted' in the primaries on tuesday 3/5 (in these states); i know a lot of people aren't going to bother because it's not going to get biden removed from the ballot, but it shows dems that they're in danger of losing the election if they don't start actively courting their voter base; that fear is more likely to push us toward a ceasefire than any other within-the-system political gesture. From the Times:
...two of the Michigan cities with the highest concentrations of Arab Americans. With nearly all ballots counted, Dearborn gave 56 percent of its Democratic primary vote to “uncommitted.” In Hamtramck, “uncommitted” drew 61 percent of the city’s Democratic vote.
Perhaps more worrisome for Mr. Biden was his performance in Ann Arbor, a college town 30 miles to the west. There, where most students and faculty members at the University of Michigan live, “uncommitted” earned 19 percent of the vote. In East Lansing, home to Michigan State University, “uncommitted” got 15 percent of the vote.
While no other battleground states have Arab American communities the size of Michigan’s, they all have college towns where young, progressive voters are angry about American support for Israel. It is in those places — Madison, Wis.; Athens, Ga.; Chapel Hill and Durham, N.C.; Tucson, Ariz.; and State College, Pa., among others — where Mr. Biden faces a general-election threat if he does not attract overwhelming support and turnout among students in November.
#he's doing the worst job in presidental history of hyping himself up- like worse than taft it's kind of insane to watch#0 effort to engage with young people or minorities and then taken aback by these results#2024

Joe Molloy Runs for Seattle Mayor From Tent City 3

Tumblr, I think you'll be all over this.
Today I found out about Joe Molloy (age 36)
They are running for Seattle Mayor with their main goal being to end homelessness in Seattle. They're running their campaign from a tent.
Here is an article from The Guardian written about Molloy:
"Joe Molloy says he never planned to enter politics. But after moving to Seattle and losing his job during the pandemic, a year ago he found himself evicted and living in a tent encampment.
After losing his home, he learned the hard-scrabble skills of what was required to live on the streets from other homeless people, the location of free food banks, and which organisations offered showers and toilets. At the encampment, he’d speak to other residents and hear stories very similar to his.
He became convinced there had to be a better, long-term solution than the dozens of tents pitched alongside his own. It was from this tent that Molloy launched his unlikely bid for Seattle’s highest office, seeking to unseat the incumbent mayor by tackling the crisis “head-on” and pushing a progressive agenda including everything from a living wage and access to healthcare.
Working out of a shared office space in the city-sanctioned encampment, known at Tent City 3, Molloy is running his campaign via social media and “word of mouth”. He still sleeps in a cot, braving the elements in the famously rainy city where temperatures often fell below 20F this winter.
“People just toughed it out,” he says of life on the street. “It’s hard. It’s not an easy experience.” Despite never having held public office, Molloy says these struggles make him the best qualified candidate to lead in a city where some 16,000 people are unhoused and the housing crisis is arguably the largest issue.
Molloy, 36, does not think much of current mayor, Bruce Harrell, 66, who took office in January 2022, and especially the way he has approached things. According to a recent survey known as a point-in-time count, Seattle has America’s fourth largest homeless population after New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, with the number of unhoused people up 23% from 2022.
And so Molloy decided to challenge Harrell and place his first-hand experiences front and center. “Sweeps [of homeless people] have been increasing since he’s been in office. Deaths of unsheltered people have increased,” Molloy tells the Guardian in a bookstore located in the university district.
Molloy, who speaks with both precision and passion, is dressed for the weather, with a beanie, a thick sweater and a Parka jacket.
“It’s a humanitarian crisis at this point. The situation is heartbreaking, but it’s also embarrassing.” Tackling misconceptions Malloy’s path to politics was unconventional: he was born in Dearborn and studied in Michigan, where he received a bachelor’s degree in public administration, and then worked in real estate in Wisconsin.
He moved to Seattle five years ago and admits he has no experience of running large organisations. Is it right to force someone into rehab? The man whose life inspired a landmark law Read more What makes him unique, he believes, is the ability to make himself a public face of homelessness, something that for many still carries a stigma.
“There are many misconceptions about homelessness,” explains Molloy. “A friend told me [homelessness] is a cardinal fear of so many people, but ‘You’re willing to talk about this openly and not be ashamed and instead use it as a reason to drive change.’”
Molloy says his campaign supports the Seattle Solidarity Budget, a set of progressive policies backed by various grassroots organisations and based on seven main topics, including access to healthcare, affordable housing and a living wage.
Its mission statement says: “We demand the City of Seattle provide the residents of our city with basic guarantees that provide a base standard of living and quality of life for all people in Seattle. The city has prioritised punishment as a means to attempt to mitigate social issues.”
In terms of addressing homelessness, he says a number of things already in place are doing useful work, but there is often a breakdown in communication both between different agencies, and the people they’re intended to help. He says studies show the most effective way to truly reduce homelessness is a process that helps a person not only find a place to live, but continues to support them after that initial step has been taken.
He says there is also an inherent flaw with the current system. A housing provider, which receives funding from local state and federal sources, for instance, constantly needs a flow of low-income people or those who have been evicted. “There is a perpetuation of the problem. So we need to focus on transitioning and diverting,” he says.
In terms of his lack of experience, he says he is not so arrogant to think he knows everything that is required to run a city of 750,000 people. But he believes there is already a lot of expertise to tap into. “There’s a very capable central staff in our city, a very capable network of representatives, of experts to our boards and commissions,” he says.
“The most valuable quality anyone representing our city needs is open-mindedness and a willingness to work together.” He adds: “It also requires a deep understanding of our most critical issues. That’s what I bring that nobody else does.” Harrell’s office rejected Molloy’s assertions, claiming the mayor had worked with “urgency and compassion to help address immediate needs and root causes”.
It said he had swiftly formed a dedicated unit that pulled together the work of a dozen departments. Over the past three years the city had created 5,161 units of affordable housing and provided thousands of offers for shelter and supportive services, his office said. The mayor had also taken on the challenge of drug deaths with new investments in detox beds, an overdose response team, and emergency responders with buprenorphine to treat both opioid overdoses and withdrawal symptoms.
Seattle was the first city in the country with emergency responders to provide the overdose services, the mayor’s office said. While overdose deaths in Kings county have spiked in recent years, fueled by the fentanyl crisis, hitting a high of 1,339 fatalities in 2023, the mayor’s office points out that overdoses in Seattle fell by 25% in 2024. “While much work is still needed to address this ongoing crisis, these data points help illustrate tangible progress,” his office said in a statement.
‘Homelessness is a policy choice’ Dr Sara Rankin, of Seattle University and a national expert on legal and policy issues about homelessness, says there was no genuine doubt about the primary driver of homelessness. “It is the housing market – rising housing costs and the lack of affordable housing,” she says, adding that while the city has made some investments in permanent supportive housing, it could do more and still places too much focus on “temporary responses such as emergency shelters”.
“Ultimately, homelessness is a policy choice. We already know many of the evidence-based choices that reduce it and many of the counterproductive choices that fuel it,” she says.
Figures obtained by the alternative news organisation Real Change suggest sweeps of unhoused people and encampments tripled in 2023. Meanwhile, in 2022 – the year Harrell took office – 309 unhoused people died in King county, according to the county medical examiner’s office, a record number that represented a 65% increase from the year before.
More than half were the result of fentanyl-related overdoses. The mayoral election is due to take place in November, with a primary in August. Among those also running are transport activist Katie Wilson, business owner Rachael Savage, military veteran Thaddeus Whelan and artist Ry Armstrong.
In a crowded field, Molloy hopes his unique backstory will help him break through. “I need to talk about this stuff,” he says. “I need to fight to bring these issues front and center.”

Not they tryna reenact KOSA… anyway yall, here’s why KOSA is bad!!
If you don’t already know, KOSA, or Kids Online Safety Act is a bill that was proposed to keep children safe on the internet. You might ask ‘why is this bill bad if it’s in favor of supporting the safety of children online’? Well, according to stopkosa.com, it puts pressure on platforms to add even MORE filters on anything they think is inappropriate for children. This is especially harmful for LBGTQIA+ youth because the knowledge about this topic would be censored, as well as knowledge on suicide prevention and LGBTQIA+ support groups. Do you see how this an issue? For those children who are wanting to learn more about these topics they’d be turned away because of this bill. It would also be likely that it’ll allow the shutdown of websites that allow them to learn about race, sexuality and gender.
This bill would also add more internet surveillance for all users across all social media platforms. It would expand the use of age verification and parental monitoring controls. These things in itself are already very invasive, but doesn’t take into consideration the children who live in unsafe environments where they are domestically abused and/or are trying to escape these situations. To add my two cents onto this, I strongly believe that the KOSA bill is an unnecessary violation of our first amendment rights (if you’re American), and doesn’t really make the internet any more safer. It actually makes it more unusable for youth. Hypothetically, if this bill were to be passed, then this would make social media unusable for literally anybody. To censor content from the youth about wanting to learn about their identity is extremely harmful. Blocking them from accessing resources that may prove as helpful in their scenarios is outlandish and unneeded. We try to shelter our youth so much to the point where we try to boil them down to only being with their parents want them to be and also not being able to let them learn and explore about other things that they may want to identify themselves with. This is very harmful.

There is something you can do to stop the KOSA bill from being passed! On the website I linked, there is a petition. All you have to do is fill out the information and it’ll send off an email for you. The email reads as follows:
I’m writing to urge you to reject the Kids Online Safety Act, a misguided bill that would put vulnerable young people at risk. KOSA would fail to address the root issues related to kid’s safety online. Instead, it would endanger some of the most vulnerable people in our society while undermining human rights and children’s privacy. The bill would result in widespread internet censorship by pressuring platforms to use incredibly broad “content filters” and giving state Attorneys General the power to decide what content kids should and shouldn’t have access to online. This power could be abused in a number of ways and be politicized to censor information and resources. KOSA would also likely lead to the greater surveillance of children online by requiring platforms to gather data to verify user identity. There is a way to protect kids and all people online from egregious data abuse and harmful content targeting: passing a strong Federal data privacy law that prevents tech companies from collecting so much sensitive data about all of us in the first place, and gives individuals the ability to sue companies that misuse their data. KOSA, although well-meaning, must not move forward. Please protect privacy and stop the spread of censorship online by opposing KOSA.
The website also gives you like a format of what you can say if you chose to call your representatives. If after reading this post, you feel inclined to do something then I would say just go ahead and do it. My first time learning about KOSA was today immediately after seeing the post I felt inclined to send my lawmakers an email. Please try to help when you can and this will only take a few minutes so I think this is something that you can consider. This post is getting a little long now, so I’ll stop here. There are more resources online if you would like to learn more about the cons of this KOSA bill, thank you for reading.

Maybe if Democratic leaders pretended Elon Musk was a 22-year-old Palestinian from Dearborn, Michigan, they’d show more fight.
The legacy of Clintonian triangulation and the corporate-centered rightward pull of the New Democrats means their top campaign consultants for a generation have been insulated, isolated, and utterly incapable of being left populists or the “brawlers for the working class” that AOC says they need to be. I remember the Rev. Al Sharpton crushing right-wing hecklers at a Democratic primary debate when they went after fellow candidates Wesley Clark and Joe Lieberman. Since Sharpton was the only person on stage with real movement experience, he actually knew how to assert his will and inspire a crowd to join him in shutting them down. Too many Democrats are weak under the bright lights. Again, not everyone melts, but as an institution, this party is melting. The legacy of Obama was that a coalition based upon “demographic destiny” would win elections in perpetuity as long as they were not Republicans. This not only bred inertia; it meant that in 2016, they were caught unaware by how much this country was becoming unglued. Yes, a “whitelash” was a big part of Trump’s Electoral College win, but that doesn’t explain everything. According to the highly respected University of Virginia Center for politics, 15 percent of Trump voters had pulled the lever for Obama. When Hillary Clinton lost, the party explained it by saying, “She won the popular vote, and there was Russian election interference” (both true!). But the party’s institutional response should have been: “Holy shit. What did we do wrong that caused us to lose to this fascist ass-clown caked in orange concealer?”
Israel. Israel. Israel. In 2025, marching lockstep behind Israel means defending ethnic cleansing, war crimes, and billions in weapon sales so they continue unhampered. It’s also taking the opposite position of what their potential voters, particularly young voters, want to see. To watch Trump yank Netanyahu to the ceasefire table was so enraging because Biden could have done that any time. Instead of disciplining Netanyahu, Democrats armed him. They did this even at the price of not being able to do a rally on a college campus in an election season out of fear of being heckled and, due to the aforementioned isolation, they have no stomach for hecklers. When a Columbia University encampment for Gaza, led by Jews and Muslims, called for peace, Democratic darling Representative Jared Moskowitz compared the organizers to the Nazis of Charlottesville—instead of, say, comparing the actual Nazis around Trump to Nazis. This is morally bankrupt, and voters know it.

— ❥ She’s slept with Ethan Edwards a few times on and off, but they only do it once more after Harri meets Jack; she’d known, even then, that she wasn’t going to want anybody else after this.
— ❥ She has a tendency to fuss over any of the boys when they get even slightly hurt playing hockey, and this definitely extends to Jack once they start dating, and any of Luke’s friends on the Devils once he gets drafted; she’s not generally any kind of a mother hen, but it’s different for her boys.

I arrived at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor on Thursday, Nov. 16 to deliver a speech on Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza. The talk's blunt title, selected by the local Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) chapter, reflected my own unambiguous approach to the conflict: "Israel's Righteous Fight Against Jihadism." Given the nature of the talk, given the highly noxious climate now pervading campuses when it comes to this topic in particular, and given the harrowing images of massive anti-Israel gatherings in nearby Dearborn, I anticipated possible fireworks and worked with YAF on event security measures.
Those security measures, unfortunately, turned out to be necessary.
Within minutes of starting my speech, 20 to 25 protestors stood up in unison. They held their arms high in the air to expose their shirts, which featured photos of Palestinian-Arabs who have died in Gaza since the war started. (The students are unaware of, or simply disinterested in, the fact that every one of those deaths is legally attributable to Hamas under international law.) Undeterred, I continued. A few minutes later, the students began obnoxiously coughing in unison each time I opened my mouth, in a clear attempt to drown me out. I reminded them of the university's code of conduct, which prohibits shouting down speakers, but that only made them cough louder.
Shortly thereafter, the mass coughing turned into shouting, coordinated by a visible ringleader toward the front of the pack. The chants would be familiar to those who have paid attention to the explosion of on-campus antisemitism since the Hamas Holocaust of Oct. 7: "Remember their names!," "Free Palestine!," "Stop the genocide!," and so forth. At one point, a protestor started to walk briskly toward the stage, prompting my body man to leap out of his front-row seat to protect me. Finally, a tepid university administrator replaced me at the podium, seemingly to once again remind the students that their conduct violated university policy. He too was drowned out; his exhortations were largely inaudible.

PRAISE FOR Yelping the Tegmine by Cal Freeman
The paragraphing of verse in English turns on the cusp of Lyrical Ballads, not from the familiar to the strange, but the opposite, from the weirdness of heightened speech to the conversational pitch of emotion which, upon reading it, we seem to have always known. Cal Freeman’s poetry scaffolds a similar structure through which his lyric moments flash. He cannot disguise that he is a Detroit poet, and unlike Levine, who abandoned (except in poetry) the once smoking landscape of Southeast Michigan, this increasingly accomplished poet has engaged a life there that is complex and erudite. His is a first-rate talent. Loss is his common topic, and there is a deep philosophical openness to the work of grief. Showing uncanny patience for the thought of longish poems, Freeman holds onto what unfolds for him and then what is revealed for us; as with all good poets, we do not know what he is after at first, but in such wonderfully titled poems as “Dichotomy Paradox as a Non-Fungible Token,” “Yelping the Tegmine” (the title poem), and “Adrian Dantley (AD) Circa 1890s,” we ourselves might say, as we arrive at our understanding, that it’s “the first time [we] remember feeling this way.”
–Kevin Cantwell, author of One Thousand Sheets of Rice Paper
“Nothing really ends, you think, looking out across the lake and knowing otherwise.” This is a book full of haunting poems. Barrooms, Inns, cafes, restaurants, rivers, lakes, memories of places and hard working people living or lost, what’s said and unsaid, the poet alone, reading a book of poetry sipping a whiskey at a bar also shadowed by its past, and always the “returning to something: song, place, or figment.” Cal Freeman’s masterful craft, attention to word, phrase, and detail leave us in awe of his talent. “…the walleyes have minted my irises/ on a bed of sediment and turned them into silver” he says, and we are hooked on his “… certain kind of singing.” Ideas shift mercurially from micro to macro, leap from the quotidian to the philosophical immersing us in real worlds woven with loss yet so alive and vibrant that his poems become the ultimate tribute, an act of preservation and resurrection, and all the while the constellation Tegmine continues to shine over us all.
–Zilka Joseph, author of In Our Beautiful Bones, Sparrows and Dust, and Sharp Blue Search of Flame

URGENT: University of Michigan Classics graduate student instructors are on strike and need your help
see below cut for information on UM's actions to sabotage its graduate students, the Department of Classics' complacency, and a signable letter of solidarity.
Dear [Colleagues],
I am reaching out on behalf of the graduate students in the Department of Classics at the University of Michigan to ask if you might consider signing and circulating within your departmental or Classics-adjacent listservs a letter calling for Michigan faculty to refrain from submitting Graduate Student Instructors' grades while we are on strike for a fair contract.
Our graduate student union (GEO) has been in contract negotiations with Academic HR for the majority of this past academic year, but AHR has not bargained in good faith. Notably, they have refused to grant graduate student instructors a living wage, despite a skyrocketing cost-of-living in Ann Arbor. Our current contract from 2020 stipulates a 10.1% wage increase over three years, whereas the inflation rate from 2020–2023 exceeded 15%, according to the US government’s standard index. AHR’s most recent pre-strike offer of an 11.5% wage increase over the next three years would not bring graduate students to even the inflation-adjusted baseline of our 2020 contract. The raise would include a 5% raise in the first year, an effective pay cut (as current inflation rates are an estimated 6-7%). The proposed contract's raise is even lower for our colleagues on Detroit and Dearborn campuses, despite a similar cost of living, with a 2% raise in the first year.
When GEO went on strike on March 29, the University immediately took legal action by filing an injunction against the union rather than attempting first to resolve matters at the bargaining table. GEO defeated the injunction on April 10, but the University has continued to refuse good-faith bargaining and instead has called upon faculty to submit final grades in the place of their striking Graduate Student Instructors. On April 20, GSIs noticed in their accounts that wages for the pay period of April 1–30 would be withheld on the basis of attestation forms, leaving us with a total of $100 for the month of April, even though 10 days of the pay period remained outstanding. On that same day, President Santa Ono called the police to detain two graduate students who were protesting outside of the restaurant in which he was having dinner (the two students were later released).
Unfortunately, the Classics department has adhered to the University’s line every step of the way. Our faculty have not only taught classes in our stead, undermining the power of graduate students to withhold our labor in pursuit of a fair contract, but they have taken on immense grading loads which would be entirely impossible to complete without a considerable cut to pedagogical quality. In certain cases, faculty who had no prior affiliation with a course have stepped in to submit incorrect grades for students while knowing that graduate student instructors were withholding components of those students’ grades. The graduate students in this department have attempted to communicate with and educate our faculty on the importance of respecting our strike throughout the last month, but we have received minimal engagement from the majority of professors. We have no choice but to turn to the wider academic community as a last resort, in the hopes that our faculty will listen to you when they won’t listen to us.
Please consider signing this letter and passing it onto your networks—not just for the wellbeing of graduate students here at the University of Michigan, but for the wellbeing of our undergraduate students as well.
Kindly,
[Graduate Student at UM Classics]
signable letter of solidarity
