Political Themes in Sonic The Hedgehog
So there are people nowadays that complain about "politics" being "forced" in media such as Sonic The Hedgehog, whether or not this is the case. They often go on to say they just want things like Sonic to be an escapist fantasy and to keep politics out. So I wanted to talk about political themes in Sonic The Hedgehog that have existed since the first game, and exist in other Sonic continuities as well.
So starting off while I don't know where to find said interview, the environmentalism is major theme stated to be behind Sonic The Hedgehog 1. Now while some people might say environmentalism shouldn't be regarded as political which I agree with, it has been made political by other people. With many of the people who complain about politics in media often complaining about environmentalism viewing it in media as inherently political. This is why I am including it. Continuing said themes can be seen in how in Sonic 1 after Eggman is defeated the Chaos Emeralds create more nature in an instant, and in the 8-bit version the Emeralds get rid of all the pollution done by Eggman.
This is further seen in Chemical Plant Zone and Eggman's bases being cold, mechanical, and the absolute polar opposite of Green Hill Zone. This is further seen in the comparison made by ALtheBoi between Angel Island and the Death Egg being polar opposites in their video How Sonic 3 Tells a Story.
This is further seen in Sonic CD with Eggman's greatest and most prized creation Metal Sonic. Or how the Encyclo-speed-dia puts it, "Eggman's answer to nature's perfect hero." In addition, the good future depicts the Little Planet as a solarpunk paradise, while the bad future depicts it as a polluted mechanical city with no nature in sight.
Eggman and Sonic's rivalry is depicted as freedom and nature vs oppression and pollution, as many of the blue blur's descriptions make this clear. Sonic Adventure "With a strong love of freedom, the only thing Sonic hates is oppression." Sonic Heroes "He's basically easygoing, but when he gets fired up over an injustice, his anger explodes with surprising consequences. Always at the receiving end of this aggression is arch-enemy Dr. Eggman, whose fiendish plots to take over the world are constantly being foiled by Sonic." Sonic Riders Zero Gravity "Sonic is a big fan of freedom and has no tolerance for evildoers." Olympic Games 2016 "He despises anything that is unfair and will get into trouble to help anyone in need." Sonic Superstars "Sonic the Hedgehog runs at mach speeds and is quick to engage those that threaten his friends, his freedom, or the natural world around him."
On top of this the existence of the Guardian Unit Of Nations and what they represent alongside their crookedness makes it where there are politics in the Sonic world. The same goes for the existence of Princess Elise and Blaze the Cat adding in monarchies.
The same goes for Queen Alena and Princess Sally as they do the same for Sonic Underground and Satam. Speaking of which Sonic Satam is the more blunt of Sonic continuities with it's political themes with the tyrant Julian Robotnik and his polluted reign of terror over Mobius, which of course bleeds into the Archie comics.

If you had to choose between
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've been thinking about answering this myself. Long story short i got the idea (~ shower thoughts ~) brushing my teeth the other morning and I was like, if I had to choose between American or Japanese Sonic who would it be?
It was a hard question at first, considering how I'm emotionally connected to both versions of Sonic.
Actual, there isn't a to big gap between American Sonic and Japanese Sonic, but I think it's really just a thing the fandom to account.
Anyway, I settled on Japanese Sonic. It was hard, but I think that should be my decision. I mean, I was introduced to the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise at five years old, my first game being Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and my first show being Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.
(the rest of my story continued undercut, for various reasons...)
So now it's evened out by the beginning of my saga, one point for american, the other for japanese.
After my only way to watch AOSTH stopped working, my mom showed me Sonic X and was like, "Look, isn't this the same Sonic show you used to watch?" and me and my bro was like, "Nooooo.....?" so yeah, then I started watching Sonic X and that's when I got into anime (Sonic X was my first anime at 8 years old uwu)
I guess now we're at J - 2 / A - 1
Actually, somethings I left out was actually I used to watch Sonic SatAM and Sonic Underground ( 7 yro me: "Why is Amy here?") on occasion, but I mainly just watched AOSTH more (My way to watch AOSTH was also my only way to watch the other Sonic cartoons).
Then another thing I left out was Sonic OVA, so technically THAT was my first anime. It was so long ago I forgot if I watched it after or before AOSTH. So idk if I watched it before, but I think it was after.
Yk, I still watch that movie to this day.
But anyway, I guess I lied earlier and it's J - 3 / A - 3 which is even i guess.
But then once I watched Sonic X, I gotta say, ask me ANYTHING about an episode that has something in it, I will know~
I've rewatched the entire series at least three times.
And that's where I learned that I love anime.
A little bit later I FINALLY BEAT THAT SINNED CHEMICAL PLANT ZONE AFTER THREE - FOUR YEARS (oh I was so proud of myself after beating THE SECOND STAGE OF THE GAME-)
But then, a LOT later, I watch the Sonic Movie. Now don't get me wrong, it was PEAK cinematic for a real life movie other than the OG Space Jam, and maybe Air Bud or smth but that's ancient. I'm surprised if the newer generations even know what I'm talking about.
Oh yeah, almost forgot about Home Alone 1 & 2. Ah, classic nostalgia.
So yeah, I'ma give Japan another two points for making my favorite show and I guess America for the movies.
J - 5 / A - 4
Now remember, this is all my personal opinion, your free to think "American Sonic is better!" Or "Sonic X sucks!" Or whatever you want, I'm not stopping you. Just remember tho that this is my personal opinion.
So after a 15 minute analysis in my bathroom probably still with the toothbrush in my mouth I decided on Japanese Sonic.
And that's the end of my partial story of my history of Sonic.

Crack theory that Decarabian is inspired by Qin Shi Huang, founder of the Qin dynasty and the first emperor (previous rulers refered to themselves as 'king') of China
In the chinese version, Decarabian is occationally refered to as 孤王 (gūwáng, lone(ly) king) which is a title Qin Shi Huang created for himself for being so high and mighty that normal people cannot come close to him
Qin Shi Huang has been viewed as a tyrant, mostly due to assessments by the Han dynasty that came after
However, he also unified China via standardization of weights and measurement, wheel axels, currencies, written language script, and developed extensive networks of roads and canals for trade and communication. Similar to Decarabian's methodical organization (to the point of micromanagement) of his city
Qin Shi Huang is also known for connecting various state walls built during previous centuries into the precursor to the Great Wall of China for defence against attacks from northern tribes, parallelling Decarabian's tall walls that encircle Old Mondstadt for Safety (or even the storm barrier)
Bonus:
The state of Qin also conquered the six other powerful states in China at the time, ending the Warring States period — so I propose that Decarabian not only preemptively declared himself the seat of the Anemo Archon (which would explain why both he and Venti get refered to as 'wind god') but also the overall victor of the Archon War

You like trains, I like trains, I wanna share with you a train that connects us more than one would think!
This little adorable 2' Českomoravská Kolben-Daněk locomotive, built in 1940!
Tumblr media
One of the final locomotives built by CKD before it became BMM during the occupation.
And somehow, it made its way from Europe, to California, then over to Indiana. And when it arrived at the Hesston Steam Museum in Indiana in the 80s or 90s, they checked it over and found chalk marks on the inside of the boiler from when it was built.
It had never been steamed before!
Anyway hehe wanted to share an adorable little loco Ive seen and ridden behind
RIDDEN BEHIND?? I'M INCREDIBLY JEALOUS!! AND SUCH PRETTY LIVERY....
And it was THAT fresh? Sounds like a successful attempt at saving it from use/dismantling by the nazis, though I see that the story behind it is a complete mystery with only speculations around...still, very interesting!! :3c
