German Uniper wins $14 billion arbitration ruling against Gazprom

German utility Uniper won a multi-billion dollar arbitration case against former long-time gas supplier Gazprom, breaking up inactive gas supply contracts and setting a potential precedent.

The decision marked a landmark victory for Uniper after Gazprom first cut and then suspended supplies. This forced the group to buy replacement volumes at enormous prices on the spot market.

It also severed the last remaining ties of a decade-long energy partnership between Berlin and Moscow, which came to an abrupt halt after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in February 2022.

Uniper stated that the 7 June ruling by an arbitration court in Stockholm allowed it to terminate existing gas supply contracts, which by law still existed even though there was no gas available.

The court also granted the company more than 13 billion euros ($14 billion) in compensation for volumes of gas that Gazprom had not supplied since mid-2022, reducing contractually agreed supplies. Uniper CEO Michael Lewis declared:

This ruling provides legal clarity for Uniper. With the right of termination that we received in the arbitration ruling, we are ending the contracts with Gazprom Export.

Gazprom Export, the Russian company’s export division, successfully challenged the claim in a St. Petersburg court. It ruled in March that Uniper and its subsidiary would be fined 14.3 billion euros if they continued the arbitration proceedings.

The German government owns more than 99 per cent of Uniper’s shares. The Finance Ministry, which controls the government’s stake in Uniper, stated that the federal government was not a party or participant in the arbitration proceedings. Berlin had no influence over the operational management of the company, it added.

O desfile e a entrega do III Prêmio UNIP Design de Moda, realizados no campus Paraíso revelou talentos emergentes que reinterpretaram o legado de Dior com toda a classe que o tema requeria: Monsieur Christian Dior, perfumista-estilista dos sonhos.

Apresentado por alunos do primeiro ao último semestre do curso de Design de Moda e por bailarinas e bailarinos da renomada Companhia de Dança Cisne Negro, o desfile e a premiação dos melhores trabalhos renderam aplausos ao fim de cada encenação de cada passagem com a homenagem a Christian Dior, o mestre da alta-costura que ganhou o mundo com seus figurinos e perfumes após a Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Monsieur Dior tinha especial apreço pela feminilidade e por essa causa ousou renascer o luxo e a sofisticação numa época em que imperava o racionamento de absolutamente tudo; num momento em que se constituíam desafios estruturais, comerciais, logísticos financeiros manter o simples, o básico, o casual. Mas o francês, amante das flores, vestiu as damas da sociedade francesa com o melhor do estilo clássico e, ao longo do tempo, com formas ousadas e poderosas, lançando uma grife que se tornaria imortal.

Com a mesma determinação e paixão à alma feminina e à arte da criação em costura, os futuros profissionais de Moda da UNIP lançaram-se a conhecer e estudar o universo très chic de Dior. Contando com o apoio irrestrito da Universidade, do professor doutor Haroldo Souza, coordenador geral do curso de Moda, e de outros professores, reinventaram looks do estilista apresentados por eles próprios e pelas bailarinas. Inspirados nas delicadas miniaturas exibidas na Galeria Dior, em Paris, suas criações foram transpostas para versões infantis. A direção geral foi da reitora Sandra Miessa.

Os cenários – pensados e projetados com todo o rigor profissional pelo professor doutor José Minerini Neto, coordenador de Arte do 6º ao 9º ano do Ensino Fundamental do Colégio Objetivo – foram outros capítulos à parte. Desde a entrada do campus até o palco, instalações e elementos decorativos faziam alusão fiel à França e à Maison Dior: mobiliários, adesivações nas portas dos elevadores, obras de arte, buquês de rosas brancas, jogo de luzes e uma excelente seleção musical suscitando o belo e o nostálgico na plateia.

E foi sob essa ambientação somada ao desafiante desejo dos alunos de atingir a verossimilhança do universo de Christian Dior, que os convidados apreciaram 10 crianças desfilarem criações ícônicas recriadas pelos alunos do 1° e 2° semestres. Os alunos do 3° e 4º semestres esbanjaram criatividade através de 60 modelos mostrando o clássico-contemporâneo nos mais variados tecidos adornados por tules, rendas, bordados, laços e chapéus nas mademoiselles. O desfile-celebração foi uma marco para o curso.

E finalizando, um seleto time de jurados Ricardo Cosenza, Mayara Capelo e Daniella Curiel, da Dior; Bruno Dalcheco, Maíra Gomyde e Marcos Aiza, da Adar Têxtil, fornecedora oficial dos tecidos dos figurinos; e Marta De Divitiis, jornalista do portal Fashion United, avaliaram as categorias de Melhor Look – com premiações para o 1º, 2�� e 3º lugares; Melhor Figurino, Melhor Identidade Visual, Melhor Editorial de Moda, Melhor Fashion Film e Melhor Maquiagem.

"The amount of electricity generated by the UK’s gas and coal power plants fell by 20% last year, with consumption of fossil fuels at its lowest level since 1957.

Not since Harold Macmillan was the UK prime minister and the Beatles’ John Lennon and Paul McCartney met for the first time has the UK used less coal and gas.

The UK’s gas power plants last year generated 31% of the UK’s electricity, or 98 terawatt hours (TWh), according to a report by the industry journal Carbon Brief, while the UK’s last remaining coal plant produced enough electricity to meet just 1% of the UK’s power demand or 4TWh.

Fossil fuels were squeezed out of the electricity system by a surge in renewable energy generation combined with higher electricity imports from France and Norway and a long-term trend of falling demand.

Higher power imports last year were driven by an increase in nuclear power from France and hydropower from Norway in 2023. This marked a reversal from 2022 when a string of nuclear outages in France helped make the UK a net exporter of electricity for the first time.

Carbon Brief found that gas and coal power plants made up just over a third of the UK’s electricity supplies in 2023, while renewable energy provided the single largest source of power to the grid at a record 42%.

It was the third year this decade that renewable energy sources, including wind, solar, hydro and biomass power, outperformed fossil fuels [in the UK], according to the analysis. Renewables and Britain’s nuclear reactors, which generated 13% of electricity supplies last year, helped low-carbon electricity make up 55% of the UK’s electricity in 2023.

[Note: "Third year this decade" refers to the UK specifically, not global; there are several countries that already run on 100% renewable energy, and more above 90% renewable. Also, though, there have only been four years this decade so far! So three out of four is pretty good!]

Dan McGrail, the chief executive of RenewableUK, said the data shows “the central role that wind, solar and other clean power sources are consistently playing in Britain’s energy transition”.

“We’re working closely with the government to accelerate the pace at which we build new projects and new supply chains in the face of intense global competition, as everyone is trying to replicate our success,” McGrail said.

Electricity from fossil fuels was two-thirds lower in 2023 compared with its peak in 2008, according to Carbon Brief. It found that coal has dropped by 97% and gas by 43% in the last 15 years.

Coal power is expected to fall further in 2024 after the planned shutdown of Britain’s last remaining coal plant in September. The Ratcliffe on Soar coal plant, owned by the German utility Uniper, is scheduled to shut before next winter after generating power for over 55 years.

Renewable energy has increased sixfold since 2008 as the UK has constructed more wind and solar farms, and the large Drax coal plant has converted some of its generating units to burn biomass pellets.

Electricity demand has tumbled by 22% since its peak in 2005, according to the data, as part of a long-term trend driven by more energy efficient homes and appliances as well as a decline in the UK’s manufacturing sector.

Demand for electricity is expected to double as the UK aims to cut emissions to net zero by 2050 because the plan relies heavily on replacing fossil fuel transport and heating with electric alternatives.
