Whumpee who had terrible birthdays in the past, and is too scared to celebrate their birthday.

Caretaker, who overhears Whumpee's reason why they don't celebrate their birthday, decides to throw a surprise birthday party to make up for all the bad birthdays! So they gathered the team up to set up the party.

When the surprise is sprung, however, Whumpee began to cry and have a panic attack due to the bad memories flooding from their horrible birthdays. Cue the team glaring at Caretaker, and Caretaker feeling guilty AF for making yet another bad birthday for Whumpee.

‼️ART TRIGGER WARNING: Mild body horror/gore

Sooooo I kinda unexpectedly deviated from what I would consider my normal art preferences here. Mostly because I’ve seen a lot of talented artists drawing their own renditions of menacing Puzzles fanart where he goes fully insane and whatnot. I wanted to also contribute to that trend somehow…although it’s slightly out of my usual comfort zone << especially with his recent design change of loosing his whole lower body lol. Adapting that into my art was an interesting experimental challenge

Here is my own take on Puzzles falling apart! Quite literally! I still wanted to add a bit of empathy in here for him tho— because I’m going to be so distraught if WOTFI 2024 is his resignation from the spotlight for good. His final bow on stage if you will; the grand finale of his performance before he departs in death (MAN I SURE HOPE HE DOESN’T DIE BUT THE FANDOM SPECULATIONS AND PARANOIA ARE GETTING TO MY HEAD. And it just seems like the narrative progression is leaning that way). Well not matter what happens to him this upcoming Saturday…this tragic TV guy has impacted me in unexpected ways and I’m just so glad we got to spend and entire year with his character. And he’s sure not gonna disappear from my art anytime soon. Hopefully I won’t be maiming him ever again after this though jksjsksp he’s suffered enough angst for now <3

calling harry a “can opener” was SUCH a good play for so many reasons i think about it every day.

in the context of his work, it makes him a tool. as many people have pointed out, including martin luiga, part of the hdb tragedy is that he simply cannot leave the force, and his superiors know that and are using it to their advantage. no matter what happens, even if harry hated every nanosecond of every bit of the work and wanted to leave, he can’t and won’t leave. they can leverage anything they want against him and then reel him back in with a facade of kindness when they “allow” him to keep his job, as long as he does what they want him to. the 41st knows he has this inexplicable talent with people and they use him for it. he’s a cop: that talent can be used in so many awful ways, to push so many different agendas. and they won’t even be his own. a can opener has no particular desire to open a can, aside from maybe the satisfaction of fulfilling a purpose. a can opener has no agency, it’s just a tool for someone else to use to get what they want. and he’s learned to be okay with being used as long as it means he gets to stay. his complacency with this system makes him guilty even if he’s also being harmed by it.

but in the context of his personal life you kind of... flip it. the people around him are going to be opened up whether they want to be or not, and it’s terrible for his relationships. it’s shown that the questions, the prying- the can-opening- it’s become inextricable from who he is as a person. it’s like he doesn’t know how else to communicate, except it’s hardly communication when you’re just ripping people open. he’s invasive as all hell, although whether he means to be is debatable. he’s the kind of person that wants to take things apart to see what makes them tick. he dissects people, but really that’s too delicate of a word for what he does; if he doesn’t get what he wants right up front, he’ll abandon all subtlety and go for brute force. if he can’t get your screws loose he’ll just smash you on the ground and pick through your pieces until he’s satisfied, and if what he did to you isn’t fixable? oh well, there are other cans to open. 

and he’ll use it for personal gain: we already know he is (was?) manipulative. once he knows how you operate, he knows how to make you keep him. he can yell or he can cry; he can threaten you or he can threaten himself; he can be completely suffocating or he can withdraw completely; he can be an incorrigible liar or brutally honest; he can present himself as a threat or a joke or a talent. he’s a chimera- that’s why he’s got this inexplicable magnetism, even when people know they shouldn’t like or trust him. fidelity of character means nothing to him. he’ll be whatever he needs to be as long as it gets him what he wants. the can-opening is just his way in.

alright listen, you and Foul Legacy are both very used to sleeping curled up into tight balls, a way of making yourselves smaller against the hungry maw of the Abyss. if you had been with a family or friends, you would've slept in a warm, comforting pile- but you never were. Abyssal creatures don't do "friends". they do allies, tentative, cautious allies whose loyalties could change with the blink of an eye. you've always wanted it, though. to be squished and tenderly smushed into a cozy lump, surrounded by safety and those you love. Legacy can see it too, the longing in your eyes, the slight tilt of your head when you see people holding hands or hugging. he chirps quietly, gently nudging your shoulder until you're on your feet, guiding you towards the campsite you and him always kept, away from people but close enough to the city so you can see all the gleaming lights

Legacy settles, curling around you and bumping his head affectionately against your legs, urging you to relax. you can't- not completely. your human guise would drop, Abyssal energy making the plant life wither and die. it's as relaxed as you've ever been, still, not a moment went by in the Abyss that you weren't on edge, your head settling against his soft lilac fluff. a content purr rumbles from his throat, gently nibbling on your night-stained fingers all covered with stars and swirling patterns and letting out a sigh of relief. this is new to both of you, cuddling and snuggling against one another, against anyone. new, and so, so lovely. you never wish to be parted from him, two Abyssal creatures trying to live, and when he leaves a tender lick against your cheek you know he sings the same song

To Dumas, at least in The Count of Monte Cristo, class is a pantomime (a really expensive one) and status is a somewhat elusive force. To him distinction as Bourdieu puts it does not quite exist which I think is absolutely fascinating. All you need is money, but sometimes you don't even need that.

The novel is plentiful with characters intruding and altering the high class, often being quite on par with old money people. This is probably indicative of Dumas living in a time of deep and rapid historical change and probably a society with significant class mobility (at least compared to other time periods), and a notably porous high-class because otherwise these plots would be far too unbelievable. Dumas and his crew have an eye for detail though and make efforts to tie in even the more fantastical elements of the plot, with the at least partial exception of the orientalist element. It strikes me that the fluidity and relative malleability of class structures at the time must have seemed plausible to his contemporaries.

On the other hand, I can't think right now of a modern piece of media that has so much cross-class movement across different subplots, characters and moments in time. Rags-to-riches stories tend to focus on a single individual or maybe family/group of friends. In TCOMC however, multiple characters radically change their status throughout the novel, the most obvious being the Count himself and Mercedes and Fernando but there is also Danglars and his wife, Benedetto/Cavalcanti, Abbé Faria, Bertuccio, the Morrels, Caderousse, Haydée (though she differs significantly from the rest as she does not so much lose her status in terms of actual lifestyle as her literal freedom)... Much of the major cast goes through a status/class transformation either upward, downward, or both, in a way that has to do mostly, but not only with their money or lack thereof
