@undertale-npcs gave me a new appreciation for the designs of Undertale NPCs. I'm going to draw the ones I like now. Starting with library loox. Silly. My dad called them Mike Wazowski's evil cousin.
I think I messed up a bit on the coloring, because all the values are really close, but oh well.

So I've been brain rotting a little hard
(??? Some guy?)
Andd then I end with a little self indulgent doddle of my sona.
So yeah. I've been hyperfixating on undertale for a bit.
So I originally just wanted to draw some cute npcs in snowdin, but then my brain saw lore.
Main masterpost
-- Info dump below --
So the first few pictures was just me doodlin a little bit, but then I really liked the Red Demon's design and lore. So I just dissected the f*ck out of this guy's dialogue, design, and understanding of the economy in the underground.
Eventually my brain led me to this conclusion.
*ahem* I have taken it up on myself to name the "Red Demon" (also called "Red Jester") as Vernillion (eh? eh?), and assign him an adopted sister, Loxie (the loox up top).
Before the war, he lived with his parents who adopted a lone loox after her parents had died fighting in the war. Eventually, Vern had lost his parents too, and soon only had Loxie to rely on and care for.
Once everyone moved underground, Vern and Loxie bounced from family to family; Vern wasn't old enough to be an adult monster yet. A couple (20) years later, Vern was assigned a plot of land and built a house to live with Loxie, and soon applied for college.
He met Sans in one of his classes, and have been good friends ever since. They often joked a lot and helped each other study.
Then sans applied to be on the royal science team, about a couple years in, sans quit. And didn't really talk much about his old job after that.
Meanwhile, Vern had been hard at work studying psychology, and eventually realized that nothing in life mattered. He realized that the economy was only going to get worse as time progressed, and that all the monsters would probably never be able to see the sun again, and that he would probably spend the rest of his life living underground.
This... caused Vern to develop depression. He didn't go to school, or interact with anyone outside of Loxie, who made him food and took care of him. And sometimes her friends who worked for the newspaper would come over to work on their comics and crosswords.
Eventually Loxie smacked some sense into her brother, and got him to go get help from a psychiatrist/therapist. He gradually worked to get back on track to get his PhD in psychology again, with the help of some medication and his sister's support.
Then, a human comes to town, and his reaction to them differs based on the route the player is taking. But in both, he's scared sh*tless to go outside the day rumors of a human falling into the underground reached his ears.
Loxie kicks him out of the house and tells him to be cool (ba dum tiss), while she meets up with her friends at the librarby.
Pacifist/neutral: greeted warmly, and says that even though there are problems in the underground, that doesn't mean that you should be morose about it.
Genocide: *smile falters a little* and says the same thing. (Knowing you've gained LOV/XP)
At the end of the pacifist/neutral route, he mentions that he's glad he doesn't have to keep pretending to be happy and smile.
...
And that's about it I think.
There's more little bits of information I don't think is important so I'll wait and draw it out later.
Thanks for listening ☺️🙏

Ok I lied I have one more gaster post and then I go BIG EEPY
But only because I forgot to post this earlier (this was my first of many gaster drawings) . Spoiler warning for the chisps saga of Undertale_Npcs arg
(plzplzplz go check it out it's so fun and cool and is the cause of my sudden gaster hyperfixation. Blargensorf is the reason I have been obsessively drawing several consecutive drawings of a silly man scientist without stop)
Personal headcanon that monster inventories exist somewhere inside their souls. So reaching inside their inventory is reaching inside of their souls.
Terrifying.

In what ways does undertale's themes drop the ball? I feel like they do as well, but I only really see the criticisms you mentioned in your post by the online fandom at large.
the sans fight is cool and fun and has a sick music track. it should have fucking sucked it should have been literally on the same level as the stanley parable baby game. it should have been impossible without an autoclicker and been super fucking tedious with one. it should have been desert bus.
like i don't think that what undertale is every trying to say is 'killing video game characters is morally wrong in real life'. i think it's clearly, in chara and flowey--who are obviously positioned as Players of video games--is trying to explore what (at least to toby fox) is an unhealthy and unsatisfying way of playing games. the need to maximize the amount of 'content', the need to experience everything in a game even when it's not fun anymore. i think the way that flowey talks makes this very clear:
like obviously diegetically this kind of stuff is meant to go towards making a point of how detached flowey is from his moral reality but i think non-diegetically this is pretty clearly speaking to a way of engaging with games that toby fox thinks sucks the fun out of them. flowey isn't connected to the contents of undertale because he didn't play it for fun, he played it to extract the maximum amount of Content, to see every possible combination of events, to get all the endings, etc.
the rest of no mercy route isn't fun. killing enemies once you've levelled up at all is boring and barely interactive, walking around in circles to spawn every single random encounter is boring, you miss out on substantial amounts of content--the humour and dialogue, etc. and that's the point! i don't think the intended emotional effect of the empty misery of the no mercy route is to make you think 'i'm a bad person for killing video game characters' it's to make you think 'is this even fun? what am i even getting out of this?' or in short--
unfortunatley i think the sans fight being very cool and becoming iconic of the game kind of fumbles that very very hard becaues it does make the murder everybody route ultimately rewarding--it gives players the Content that i feel like the entire writing and metanarrative of the game is setting up to not exist, and so i think it absolutely fails to stick the landing.
