Undercover Smolder Mulder: Pine Bluff Variant Fic Recs

I'd describe Pine Bluff Variant as a low key fan favorite, an episode that I even feel like appreciation has grown for over the years. Oh sure, it doesn’t get the fan love that a Memento Mori or Pusher might, but we sure do see those Mulder Scully intense looks gifs popping up pretty often, right? Plus, it has partner trust angst, undercover intrigue, hurt/comfort, genuine thriller-style suspense, and serious MSR overtones.

I like PBV for all of those reasons obviously, but also because it feels like the show going with a slightly different tone. Starting from its action-based, FBI operation cold open, we know this is more conspiracy / bioterrorist thriller than classic X-file. Yes, there’s a sci fi component to the biotoxin--and the scenes that reveal its victims have a horror feel--but this episode just isn’t as much about the supernatural. It also raises the interesting--and nowadays more pointed--question: aren’t anti-government groups operating under their own rules sometimes potentially as dangerous as the government itself?

TXF tried several kinds of experiments in its later seasons, in production and structure of show (Triangle or X-Cops), in exploring all kinds of playful, self-aware and satirical comedy (lots of season 6, Hollywood A.D., etc.), in making drastic moves with its mytharc (One Son, Requiem, etc). Going in the direction of a more purely action-suspense thriller for a MOTW wasn’t something they ever tried again (that I can think of anyway). And I think that's kind of a shame? It feels like a good change up. Different without messing too much with the show’s basic DNA.

Not to mention, y'all, Scully thinks he betrayed her! And there's the scene with the finger! And Mulder thinks he's going to die! There's so much good stuff here!

Calling Bluffs - mangokiwitropicalswirl An angsty little post ep that doesn’t flinch from the way coming close to death affects Mulder (or Scully). It also raises the question of how much their bond always puts them at risk. Moving ending.

Stop Me If You’ve Heard This One Before - pinebluffvariant Immediately post ep, Scully protects Mulder. There is some satisfying hurt/comfort. But what really shines in this fic is the ending, which ties a nice bow on season 5 and kicks me in the feels. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, indeed: sniff.

Passing Solace - DarlaBlack An intensely romantic NC-17 scene set in the middle of the episode, focused on their deep care and need for one another. Beautifully written.

All of This (around) Us - secondsflat In this sweet fic they share whiskey before Scully sets his finger bone, and Scully voices her frustration at not knowing about his undercover work. An intimate, atmospheric little scene.

Snakebitten - onpaperfirst This is a riff on all of season 5 written with great skill and subtlety. So, so good. It’s canon divergent in that it seeds the Pine Bluff Variant / New Spartans storyline back earlier in the season—and it has more RST. Such a treat.

Postcards Slipped Under the Door - skuls Two years after Pine Bluff Variant, some time after the events of En Ami in season 7, Mulder begins receiving ominous postcards from the New Spartans, suggesting they have regrouped. Skinner and Scully think it’s too dangerous for him to get involved in the case again, so Scully goes instead. This is hard on Mulder, as they’re in a recently begun relationship. Angsty, plot-driven, satisfying.

After much struggling, Brasidas is finally done!

Unlike Alexios, Kassandra, and Phoibe, Brasidas didn’t really need a younger design (I might go back later, but I think it’s not necessary to the story). Instead I went with a “mercenary” design for undercover work, since I have him doing a bit more of that than in canon. His regular armor is just a bit too recognizable for spy work lmao

His primary armor is obviously based on his canon armor, but I mixed it with some other pieces of concept art. The “mercenary” armor is based on the Odysseus set with a hint of Spartan Renegade I think. I had initially planned on going with green (complementary colors and all) but it was fighting me. Blue looked good, but also too Athenian though so I landed in the middle.

I love a good identity reveal, so Brasidas (along with the majority of other key characters) spends a decent part of the story not knowing who Alexios and Kassandra really are. He knows that he isn’t getting the whole truth, Alexios is pretty upfront with that, but the longer they know each other the more it causes issues.

After finding out that Bucky was going to be working for Val due to getting a job within the surface area of their skill set, he was contemplating on getting a cut of the salary himself.

However before he could even make a decision, he got a call from an old ally that there was a targeted group of mischief running rampant down the road in Atlanta, Georgia. His first response was that it was Liane, Rick and Luna causing mayhem again—but then he remembered they were at home with him.

“Ah shit…” he muttered getting more of the description of the situation and the location.

Soon enough, he found himself in Val’s room getting tangled in a pile of offers and uses, watching the woman trying to pull the strings here. He stood his ground and shook his head unfazed saying, he’ll go in for one trip only, get paid for the job and get out.

The woman scoffed but smirked immediately, knowing that she can use him for the sake of getting an attack ordered.

Of course, Jason rolled his eyes hearing about John Walker and snickering knowing he can try to scare the man by his entrance. The others he was actually intrigued by, having heard of and encountered the others before such as—Ghost and Yelena.

Imagine John Walkers face when bullets started ramming against the windows of the car and he was screaming at Alexei, only to find the person shooting was Jason Underwood ;)

And then Bucky added the cherry on top by blasting the car. It was priceless.

“You called?” He replied casually, rubbing his hair with a smaller towel, messing it. Kiara bit her lip.

“I–yes, I learned some information about the prisoners.” She cleared her throat. He nodded and swallowed, his throat bobbing up and down. She could have sworn that he looked her figure up and down. She did her best not to return the favor.

“Follow me.”

Jango smirked, and he looked over her attire a second time. She crossed her arms. “Getting cold there?” She asked with raised brows, nodding at his bare chest.

“I need to get back before sunrise, or I’ll be missed,” she stated, waiting patiently for his towel. She held out her hand for it when he returned, but he completed the job himself, wiping her clean. She sat up next to him on the cot, planting another kiss on his cheek.

Jango pulled her into his lap carefully, wrapping his arms around her waist a final time. They kissed passionately, but briefly.

“Until next time,” he promised her. She beamed at him, before starting to gather her clothes for her return back to camp.

Putting this down before I forget it (since it's 2 am and I really should be asleep)

Sangheili Akari is an illegally modified Sangheili. She was captured by an invading human force along with several other young Sangheili so young she doesn't even remember her birth name. The goal of the abduction was to create a sort of Spartan version of the Sangheili to go toe-to-toe with the invading force that could be controlled and guided, either by orders given in code or via a sort of neural interface. Similar to how Spartan-IIIs were given chemical augmentation to force their bodies to grow faster, the abducted Sangheili were given an injection as well. Of the dozens that were abducted, only a few handfuls survived. The planet that the research was being done on was raided by the Covenant before too much more could be done, and the surviving Sangheili youths were bundled into a ship and escaped with before the lab was destroyed.

They landed on Reach during the invasion. They were accosted by a force of Covenant as they headed for the lab, and those that survived were then stuck in place as human Marines arrived to "save" them. The Marines mistook the troupe as a group of undercover Sangheili abducting scientists and opened fire. The scientists protested all their hard work being killed but were unable to save those that failed to flee. It was a loss. They could replicate and improve the process, having ironed out some kinks, but there was still much to be done.

Akari (only knowing herself by an experiment number at that point) managed to be the swiftest of the Sangheili during the initial confrontation and managed to escape. She struggled to survive in an unknown area on an unknown planet, hiding from humans as well as aliens because she didn't know who was friend and who was foe. To her, everyone was an enemy that might kill her. Her anxiety and vigilance kept her alive, enabled her to successfully scavenge and bring food back to the ship- which she moved after several days of scoping out the surroundings. She had watched the pilot as they left the planet and as they headed for Reach. She was young and frightened, but her mind had been accelerated to an extent. She was able to make connections swiftly.

She ended up flying low and setting the ship down not too far from a mining settlement, banging it up to make it look abandoned so she wouldn't be bothered. She'd have stayed there until the glassing approached if it weren't for the swarm of Sangheili that appeared one day, all flooding towards one area behind the shipyards. She waited until movement stopped, until night fell, before creeping out to scavenge. Beggars couldn't be choosers, and the invading force of her own kind almost always had rations on them that she could use.

What she found was not just rations, but also a man in armor barely clinging to life.

Well, I don't know what I'm going to do with it, but here's the premise.

AU: What if the Spartan Program created super spies instead of super soldiers?

Spartan Ops HQ - 

Kelly was early, but it didn't mean she was first in the conference room.

John stood at the head of the table with his arms crossed and his patented expression of  grumpy overthink. Kelly decided not to disturb his brooding as she slid into a seat next to Fred instead.

"Any idea what this is about?" she asked as she glanced over the other occupants of the room.

Sam and Kurt were talking with Maria off to the side of the room. Linda had somehow found a shadow in the well-lit area and lurked. Riz sat across the table from Kelly and Fred and was reading a dossier. Usually Kelly could guess at the kind of op it would be by the makeup of the chosen agents, but this was a lot of muscle with minimal stealth and comm support.

Fred looked up from playing with one of his knives. "I'm out of the loop, but I'm pretty sure it's related to the arms dealer Linda and Sam captured a couple days ago."

Normally, Fred would have been part of the planning group, but he had been on mandatory medical leave. "I suppose this means you're back in rotation?" Kelly said, attempting not to sound glad about it.

"Doc signed off this morning. John called me in five minutes later."

Kelly smirked and reached over to slap him playfully on the shoulder. "You weren't even shot in the head or torso and they kept you out for weeks. Are you that fragile? I'm going to have to teach you how to dodge."

"Most of us can't dodge oncoming bullets at close range," Fred said with a smirk of his own.

"Guess I'll have to watch your ass from now on."

"Guess you will."

Kelly didn't have a quick enough comeback, which was a bit embarrassing, and the eye contact lasted a little too long. They were both relieved when James and Will arrived, and Kurt whistled to call the meeting to order.

Fred was right about it being related to the arms dealer.

The Scorpion, now identified as the dishonorably discharged Clara Kincaid, had been on ONI's most wanted list for the last several years, but she had been careful to keep her movements and identity secret. Until two days ago all that was known about The Scorpion was her gender, her viciousness, and her proclivity for an all male entourage.

John took over once Kurt finished with the basics. "The search of her ship's database indicate she was going to have an in person meeting with Morgan Falelo. ONI is keeping her capture secret, and wants us to keep the meeting and find out if Falelo is a middleman or in the Corinth system's insurrectionist command structure."

"Problem being," Kurt said. "The meet is a several day long house party at Falelo's island on Corinth Prime."

John was attempting not to look uncomfortable, and failing. "Riz has been screening what the insurrectionists know about The Scorpion. It is as little as we did. But there are rumors."

Kelly was looking over the bullet points on the embedded screen in front of her. Female. Tall. Muscular. Blunt. Brutal. Were the descriptions used in tapped conversations. She pulled up a picture of the Kincaid herself. "So I'll be taking her place," Kelly said as she looked at a scowling woman who matched her stature and coloration, even the shape of their noses with a knot below the bridge from being broken several times. Military posture, even while having her perp walk pictures taken.

"You would be the best choice," Riz said. "If there's a chance someone has seen her before, you are a close match in appearance."

"And she's a total bitch," Kelly said as she gave John a knowing look. Her inability to play nice had her pulled from undercover work.

"The worse you are," John said. "The better for your cover."

"Who's going with me?"

"Your entourage will be myself, Kurt, Sam, James, and Will," John answered.

Kelly raised an eyebrow that he wasn't mentioning any of the female Spartans in the room or Fred.

"The exclusively male entourage," Fred reminded her, tapping his finger on the dossier. He was good at picking up on things like that. "Linda, Maria, and Riz will stay out of sight and monitor, right?"

"Yes."

Fred nodded. "Where am I supposed to be, though?" He had that slight tension in his jaw, like he was waiting to find out he was going to be a stay-behind liaison with ONI. It was an important job, but every Spartan hated being left behind.

"That gets us to known associates," Kurt said. "She also is known to frequently be in the company of her second-in-command."

"Who is where currently?" Fred asked.

"One of the casualties when we took down Kincaid," Sam said with a motion across his throat and a lopsided grin.

Riz brought up a picture of the deceased. "He's known as having black hair, blue eyes, and facial scarring," she said. "You're a good candidate to pose as him, Fred."

Kelly flashed Fred a look. It would be good to have him in the field again. "So Fred and I will go to this party, gather intel, and see if we can get the dirt on this Falelo."

"Based on what you find, we'll either round up him and his associates at the end or turn him into an asset."

That didn't sound difficult at all. So why was John being awkward? Kelly crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow. "What's the catch?"

John ran a hand over his face. "There is just one further part of your cover. Kincaid and Cortez were... known to be intimate. Kincaid was known to be intimate with the majority of her entourage, especially Cortez."

"Okay," Kelly said.

"Demonstratively so."

Kelly wasn't sure if she wasn't following or if her brain was refusing to follow. Fred cleared his throat and bumped shoulders with her as he leaned forward. "In what way?" he asked. "And what would Falelo reliably be expecting?"

"A fair amount of physical contact," Kurt said. "We have some surveillance recordings for you two to research."

Riz looked up. "One of our taps on Falelo has him telling his concierge, and I quote, 'if Cortez isn't around, make sure you have a strong looking pretty boy for her to bend over,' end quote."

John somehow looked stoic and mortified and Kurt's eyes gleamed with amusement. This was when Kelly would exchange a glance with Fred under normal circumstances, but it felt like her neck was frozen.

Sam grinned. "Oh yeah. Kincaid liked Cortez best, but she was not picky. Let me tell you, me and Linda got an education in the two days of surveillance before we got the go to apprehend her."

That Linda coughed in agreement was not a good sign.

Finally feel comfortable to share some of my halo headcanons, certainly after rereading Empty Throne again. Primarily about Grey Team. (Also, because I don't have any finished art due to workloads but shhh)

Grey Team headcanons

Grey Team is in a polyamorous relationship, even if they aren't totally certain of the right terms.

Adriana-111 is the big spoon of the relationship and fully enjoys holding Jai-006 or Michael-120 close to her. In a way, it makes her feel like she could keep them safe. Certainly, in the aftermath of Empty Throne.

Jai can and will listen to Adriana and Michael discuss things like weapons, technology and explosives. In a similar vein, Adriana and Michael have spent hours discussing explosives.

Grey Team has a photo of them and Mendez that isn't standing at ease, or any military formalities. It's more like a family photo. They also occasionally kept in touch at the start of the war, usually as a "Hey we aren't dead yet lol" message.

Grey Team also keeps in contact with Melody as much as they're able to. Adriana is quietly concerned about how Melody is handling things after the events of Envoy.

If they encounter UNSC forces further back behind enemy lines that weren't planned, they usually get the other parties to agree that they never saw them there. “We never heard of Spartans here.” “And you’ll keep it that way, Sergeant.”

Their love language that isn't focused on their individual interests is food. This usually results in Adriana trying to sneak good food back to Jai and Michael when she's doing undercover work. They also stole food in training together. Mendez likely knew this but allowed it to happen so long as they weren't caught to further their teams training regarding stealth and item retrieval.

If one of the team vouches for you, that's usually good enough for the other two. Exceptions can be ones like Delgado from Cole protocol, usually to external circumstances.

Grey Team suffers nightmares about Glyke. They've found some small bit of comfort in sleeping next to each other or holding each other when they sleep.

Adriana will take little knick knacks of technology back to Michael for him to mess around with when she returns from undercover work.

Jai is actually good with makeup and often helps Adriana with putting it on if she needs to wear it.

During the Spartan-II's week 'off' at Emerald Cove, Adriana and Michael buried Jai in the sand when he slept. He has not lived this down.

Adriana's nickname is Adri, however she's only called that by the other two in private when they aren't on any active missions.

Other headcanons

August-099 has imposter syndrome about leading Omega Team. This persists even despite Robert-025 and Leon-011's assurances when it rears its head quite badly.

Fred-104 has basically adopted Ferret Team. Best he can anyways.

Leon-011 doesn't actually talk much despite the game dialogue. He tends to keep quiet as a personal preference. Robert and August have learned to interpret his signals to them and forms of communication. He's always been quiet, even during training.

Douglas-042 would be a bubble tea shop kinda guy. Rock up in full armor because he has some leave but wasn't allowed to take the armor off for whatever reason and ask for suggestions from whoever is working.

Red Team as the start of their time on the Spirit of Fire were confused with each other. Mainly Alice-130 and Douglas-042. People forgot to look at the numbers.

Robert gave Alice her nickname of "Hurricane Alice." He also gave her "Crazy Cici" but that never caught on quite as well. It remains an inside joke now.

Douglas' shoulder hurts in colder temperatures after Atriox crushed it.

The Spartan-IIs are at minimum bilingual in English and Hungarian. However, if they came from a colony world that didn't primarily speak either language, they're multilingual.

2024 Back-to-School Special! (ep 800)

“Ten with Ken” returns for its 8th season with a special double episode distilling the best moments from literally hours of welcome back, orientation, move-in and kick-off videos, from more than 100 colleges and universities. Students overcome their anxieties and homesickness by celebrating, dancing, screaming and clinging to their stuffed animals and favourite comfort foods. They’re distracted by concerts, midway rides, marching bands, fireworks, confetti cannons, and so much more. Some schools play games too, staging their own versions of “Cash Cab,” “Undercover Boss,” or “Roommate Match.”

While the post-pandemic Class of 2028 is anxious, so too are campus administrators, still smarting from heated protests and campus occupations this spring. Their Fall welcome videos overtly urge tolerance for diverse viewpoints and a culture of respect on campus. Incoming first-years are asked to share words of advice for their future selves, while senior students and new graduates share their own advice for the incoming class of 2028. A sense of community is quickly established with matching t-shirts, massive logo formations on the football field, running the gauntlet and plunging in to the mud. From “BamaJam” to “GobblerFest,” campuses are working hard to amp up the enthusiasm of students returning to campus this month. (As so many student put it: “Whoooooo!”)

#4 Lore dump about ocs

Raya

Where do I even start?? This is the short version and I passed over a lot of details, Raya and her cousins were all raised in a military family, more specifically in the Hood family. It’s not the most known fact due the last name differences but Admiral Terrence Hood is her uncle and she was mostly raised by him and his wife. Her parents were apart of the UNSC but they were rarely ever home, Raya spend most of her time with her uncle and aunt or attending military school with her cousins.

Around the same time the war started, Raya’s parents asked what she wanted for her 14th birthday, all she really wanted was time with her parents, so they went on a vacation together. However, the planet gets attacked while their there, and Raya ends up getting saved by an ODST while her parents are killed, the last thing she even remembers from that night, is watching the man who saved her get stabbed while the pelican was taking off.

It takes two more weeks before she’s finally taken back to earth and reunited with her family, it’s Terrence that sees her first and asks what happened. After they talk, Raya takes his hand and gives it a squeeze but doesn’t cry, she can’t find it in her and it’s a note that Terrence makes. He ends up putting her in therapy but it doesn’t really go anywhere, Raya is just refusing to grieve and never really processes it.

By the time she’s 18, she enlists immediately and her military career starts, by the age of 22, she’s scouted out to become an ODST and climbs the ranks. She works mainly on the frontlines but has the odd missions of undercover or assassinations, at the age of 32 her entire unit gets wiped out and the only reason she survived is because she didn’t listen to orders.

After this event, she gets called back to earth for a psychological evaluation but ends up stopping by Admiral Hood’s office and she breaks down about it to him and this is the first time he’s seen her cry. She doesn’t get sent to the frontlines again for a good six years, doing mainly undercover missions and dealing with insurrectionists as a lonewolf.

In 2548, she’s recruited for the experimental phase of the Spartan-IV program and by 2551 has been promoted to commander.

There is such much more but this is scratching the surface.

Lana

I’m still working on her story, but what I have so far is that Lana attended military school with her cousins and brothers, she’s normally very quiet and got bullied for it until Raya snapped one day and beat the kids up [Lana didn’t tell anyone because she didn’t wanna be a bother], this was right after Raya lost her parents.

When she was 12, her dad got a form of incurable disease and slowly started dying, she would often get sent to stay with family while her parents were constantly at doctor appointments. While visiting him in the hospital, he starts teaching her to draw and it becomes their thing, when she finally turns 18, her dad tells her “No point in wasting away with me, go live.” And ends up becoming a marine. She becomes an ODST at 25 but ends up getting taken by ONI to do undercover ops. In 2549, she gets pulled into the Spartan-IV program after the first set of augmentations are done with the first group of experiments.

I know in 2552, she gets put onto Kilo-Five as a stealth operative.

Novarell

Also a work in progress,

Nova is an original Predacon that was put into stasis by Onyx Prime and Solus Prime. She was more curious about how Cybertronian lived and was taught by Onyx to change forms. This resulted in her getting pretty much casted out and Solus took her in and taught her how not to be a beast pretty much. Nova had pleaded to the Predaking alot about the great cataclysm coming but wouldn't hear her out. She was ready to die with her brother but Onyx wanted to ensure at least one Predacon survived, so he and Solus put her into stasis.

She was accidentally woken during the war and was confused as hell at the state of Cybertron. She ended up killing bots on both sides in self-defense as the autobots thought of her as a con and the cons had never seen this predacon before.

Not her proudest moment, but she ended up draining the Energon from the bots she killed to sustain herself. She meets some predacons but realizes they aren't from her Era of life. Nova ends up killing them seeing them as weaker and is disgusted by them.

There is a brief period where Nova tries to find any of her kind still alive that isn't a knockoff. During this time, she helps several autobots in battles but their all confused as to why a predacon is turning against the cons. Nova never stays and flies off. Novarell ends up destroying a deception base and using the portal in there to find her way to Earth. Only to find the place crawling with predacons and loses her mind for a minute and goes on a killing spree. In her grief, she finds a cave that's filled with Energon and returns to stasis.

Flash forward years, and someone [probs cons] finds the cave she's residing in and starts mining the now energon crystals; they don't realize there is a GIANT dragon in the cave and hit a deposit that's above her and the vibration pulls her out of stasis and she's grumpy. She yawns and sniffs the air and growls, she attacks the bot and it's over within a minute before Nova transforms and stretches, how long had it been since she took on this form?

She leaves the cave and makes sure to cause a landslide to block it, she'll be able to dig at it later. Before transforming again and flying off to figure out what had happened.

Raya

Her eyes used to be honey brown. Raya was going actively blind before augmentation with the war she’s fought in for 20+ years, between the explosions and flashes of plasma, it started taking a bad turn on her vision. She originally started losing her sight at 16 but never told anyone thinking it was normal until she told her uncle about it at 18, there was no point in making a big deal about it between the war and her going through boot camp that they just got her long-lasting contacts. In 2548, Admiral Hood was thinking about having her retire with her vision being so bad but ONI wanted her for the Spartan-IV program with her mission record. Due to the program still being in the experimental phase, they offered her the Spartan-II augmentation, Occipital Capillary Reversal regardless of if failure meant permanent blindness. She jumped on the wagon so fast and the augmentation was a success, however this resulted in her eyes turning into a golden color instead of brown and she can see in the dark.

From her father’s side, she’s from Ukrainian descent, I had to share this too.

Lana

Girl got cheated on by her fiancé while she was deployed and only finds this out because one of her cousin’s had evidence, she confronts him and he says very hurtful things and the main one that she remembers till this day is “you are no good.” And her responds is “you honestly couldn’t have waited till I was six feet under? I would’ve died sooner than later and you couldn’t have let me die thinking you loved me?”

Novarell

Nova and the original Predaking came from the well of allspark together, so they considered each other siblings and were very close until Nova started interacting with Cybertronians and learned how to transform, they started fighting a lot and he practically casted her out but could never bring himself to kill her. She still loves her 'brother' very much and misses him.
