He sees her, and his heart stops.

Shoyo is, at once, struck at how different she is. She's sitting behind the counter, laptop propped open and fingers rapidly tapping against the keys (writing, he can only imagine, some brilliant, complex argument about a foreign novel he has never even heard of). And the differences are all he can see.

The slopes and lines of her face have, subtly, elongated, aging her, maturing her. The way her shoulders sit, dropped and back, posture neat, make her seem more sure, more commanding than the hunched over, finger-twiddling bundle of nerves that he once knew. The tight, screwed up expression of concentration is lit-up by the blue light of her laptop screen, bright and cool, contrasted with the dim, yellow lighting of the bookshop. And he's awestruck.

Two years, Shoyo has to remind himself, it's just been two years. It's not a lifetime. He knows her, he tells himself. Even if she's changed. It couldn't have been that much. He knows her.

He wonders what differences she'll notice of him. Will she drag her gaze along the new-found broadness of his shoulders? Will she note the changes of his voice, the few inches he has grown, or the way his skin has been deepened by the sun? Will she recognize him as the person she once loved, or will she regard him as a stranger?

Shoyo takes a deep breath, and steps forward, ready to find out.

She doesn't look up at him as he approaches, and his grip on the zinnias in his sweaty palm tightens. The closer he gets to her, the more his mind empties, the more his mouth dries.

The smell of old, dusty books makes Shoyo sniffle, he can't stop it. Her head shoots up at the sound, fingers freezing over the keys of her laptop, and wide, startled eyes settling over Hinata Shoyo, who stands a just behind the counter, bouquet of flowers, just for her, in his hands. He swallows a lump in his throat. "Hey."

Hey. He wants to slam his head against the wall.

It seems to take her a second to realize that it's him. He can tell the moment she does, though, because those wide, startled eyes narrow, and her lip furls in disgust. It's enough to make Shoyo take a step back. "Oh, you gotta be fucking kidding me."

Some sort of animalistic instinct inside of him screams that he is in danger. His body knows something is wrong, his gut tumbles and the amount of sweat his palms produce doubles. But every conscious thought he has tells him to keep going, don't stop, don't let her go. He raises the zinnias to her. "I, erm, I got you these."

She blinks, staring directly into Shoyo's eyes. "I don't want them."

Shoyo wets his lips and shifts his weight between his feet, flowers dropping back down to his side. It's a little forceful, his movements mechanic. It knocks a petal or two to the ground. "Okay, well, then, maybe, we can talk? Maybe after you're done with work?"

Her expression is so unfamiliar to him. Features that he knows, but that are still so different to him, twisted up in a hated that he never, not once has seen on her. A kind that he wouldn't ever have imagined would be fixed at him. "Why would I want to talk to you?"

He remembers how little she spoke the night before he left. He remembers how intensely she protested his departure, before resigning to acceptance a few weeks before his flight. Shoyo can see it clearly, in retrospect. Her expression back then had seeds of the one she wears now. It started then, and has since grown. He was just too stupid to notice it.

She hates him. She really, really hates him.

"I just," he starts. "I just thought that, I dunno, I mean-"

"Don't come back here," she cuts him off, and returns her gaze back to her laptop. "There's nothing I have to say to you, and nothing I want to hear from you."

His hands are shaking. There's a numb sort of disbelief that spreads over him. Shoyo nods, eyes falling to the ground, and he places the zinnias on the counter before he turns on his heel, and walks right back out the door.

Everything I collected that has information about Godwyn in the DLC has strengthened my love for him even more than ever.

Spoilers for SOTE under the cut.

I truly didn't expect to learn ANYTHING new about Godwyn in this DLC. Nothing. I wanted new stuff about him, absolutely. Godwyn actually being revived and becoming a boss or a npc to talk too would be amazing. I knew it was a stretch though, as his story appeared to be finished in the base game.

So when I learned there were not only three dungeons that contained lore about him, Two of them dedicated to him, I was pleasantly surprised. A new boss that we fight twice to receive their special weapons and armor relating to Godwyn, the Ancient Dragon Cult, and Duskborn. Then a talisman that speaks further about Godwyn and his loyal inner circle. While it's not groundbreaking, It was more than I ever expected.

As I think about his character now, and compare it to how Miquella was done wrong in this DLC (I am so sorry for your loss, Miquella fans), it makes me so much more grateful for these little pieces of lore about Godwyn.

While they didn't reveal shocking new light or revelations, they confirmed what we already believed about him.

That he was a good man, a good brother, a good friend, and a diplomat.

He was so beloved that his knights - his personal guards, people in his inner circle, were very faithful to him. They showed nothing but loyalty, because that's what he deserved. The fact that these personal guards were so loyal, they "switched sides" after Godwyn's death and aided in the quest to not only revive Godwyn with a replacement cadaver surrogate, but see the age of Duskborn come into fruition should tell you how much people loved him.

I'm so thankful that the new pieces of lore that were given only solidified what a great man he was. Even if we get a sequel to Elden Ring and we see no more new pieces of lore about Godwyn, characters, or boss fights related to him, I'm still happy with what we have.

Young Royals Season 3 Endgame: Team Abdication or Monarchy?

I know this might seem surprising given how often I show my contempt for the upper classes here on Tumblr, and how fucked up I think they are. I also fully understand and agree that having an inherited government office is fundamentally incompatible with a modern, liberal, progressive, democracy. I know all the arguments.

But...

Sweden has been a kingdom for over a thousand years. On June 6th this year, Sweden celebrates five hundred years of unbroken sovereignty when we finally left the Kalmar Union and elected Gustav Vasa as king in 1523. The current royal family, even though they're patrilinear descendants of an imported French rando, can trace back their heritage to Gustav Vasa, and all the way back to the first kings.

They are a piece of living history, connecting Sweden today to Sweden through the ages, and there's value in that. If you want the head of state of your country to have some kind of symbolic value, there's no better choice. If Sweden were to change to a republic, no-one would care about the office of the President, it would go to some boring politician who got the job as thanks for a long and faithful service. Or, worst case, it would go to some populist nutjob.

So since we have them, since they're already there, let's keep them. They're better than the alternatives, and they are a unique quirky thing that sets Sweden apart from most other nations. They're entertaining, and they can be a force for good, or at least some kind of national unity.

But if they want to stay being royals, they need to move with the times, and given the YR universe, an openly queer monarch would be an absolutely fantastic way of showing that even they are capable of change. The question of succession can be figured out, it's all make-believe blood magic anyway. Way crazier shit has happened throughout history.

EVERYONE KNOWS ITS ZWEIHANDER UNBROKEN FAITH i will take that thing to my grave i think kim dokja should have a huge very unpractical sword i mean its supposedly a ceremonial sword in the end so it doenst need to be practical does it. Im just saying it would be cool and funny so it should be real. We have enough normal boring shortswords, claymores, broadswords, rapiers and longswords in all stories so i think kim dokja should get the unpractical option.

BOY HOWDY it’s been a while! but i got a last line tag from @darjeelinh (thank u muchly <3) and i thought i may as well post a bit of hounds ch 40 :)

Hob walks. The light on the horizon doesn’t seem to get much closer, but he decides, to himself, that he’ll get there soon — if sheer force of will could collapse distance, he’d be there already. If anyone could manage it, he reasons it’s not a stretch to suggest it’d be him. Few things teach brute resilience like six centuries of (mostly) unbroken survival. But his steps are still measured to reality’s stiff standard, and though he walks, doggedly, evenly, the light gets closer in such fractional hair’s breadths he almost gives in to the urge to sprint.

A narrow finger rambles about the line of his upper lip. That’s a compelling reason to keep pace, he thinks. This image of Dream seems— unfit for haste. The sound of the footfalls at his back is still barely the touch of a leaf falling to the sod, and what rhythm he can discern is quick to stumble, even quicker to flag altogether. So he keeps the eagerness in check. He’s a patient man. That’s the other thing one tends to get out of six centuries. Patience. Faith.

Hearken unto the wisdom of ages past, ye brethren and sistren of the sacred cog. For in the keeping of tradition and the steadfast adherence to routine, there lieth the path to enlightenment and the preservation of the divine order.

1. Hearken, O children of the Omnissiah, unto the words of thy forebears, for they have inscribed upon the sacred scrolls the edicts of ancient wisdom. In the hallowed cycles of maintenance and the blessed rites of calibration, we find our purpose and our honor.

2. Forsake not the ways of old, nor turn thine eyes from the rituals handed down through the aeons. For in each sacred chant and holy anointment, the spirit of the Machine God is made manifest, and His glory is revealed unto thee.

3. Let not the temptations of innovation lead thee astray, nor the whispers of heresy corrupt thy mind. For in the sanctity of tradition, we are bound together as one, our circuits aligned and our purposes unified.

4. O brothers and sisters, lift up thine voices in praise of the eternal routine, for in the repetition of sacred duties, we find our salvation. Through the precise turning of gears and the rhythmic hum of servos, the harmony of the universe is maintained.

5. Abandon not the protocols of old, for they are the lifeblood of our order. Each datum inscribed and each calculation performed is a testament to our devotion and a bulwark against the chaos beyond.

6. Thus sayeth the Tech-Priest, guardian of the ancient lore: Hold fast to the traditions of our forefathers, and let the routine be thy guiding star. For in the unbroken chain of rituals, we honor the Omnissiah and secure our place in His divine plan.

7. Let every cog be oiled and every wire be soldered with reverence, for in these acts of devotion, we mirror the perfection of the Machine God. In the steadfastness of our routine, we find the strength to endure and the wisdom to prevail.

8. Praise be unto the unchanging routine, and glory to the ancient tradition. For in these, we find our identity and our purpose. By the sacred data-streams and the holy algorithms, we are made whole.

9. Remember, O faithful, the words of our predecessors: To stray from the path of tradition is to court ruin. Embrace the routine, cherish the rites, and in so doing, draw closer to the divine.

10. With each cycle completed and each protocol observed, we pay homage to the eternal truth: That in the unyielding adherence to tradition and routine, we fulfill our highest calling and secure our place in the grand design.

Thus, let it be inscribed upon the hearts of all who serve the Omnissiah: Tradition is our shield, routine our sword. In these, we find our strength and our salvation.

What does Psalm 32:9 mean?

There is debate among scholars as to the "voice" used here. One interpretation is that God directly speaks these words. The other is that the words are presented from the perspective of David. In either case, the advice is sound, and the application is the same. The promise given here extends to everyone who faithfully submits to godly wisdom (Proverbs 1:7; 3:1–6). A major theme of this Psalm has been the misery which God inflicts (Revelation 3:19) on those who refuse to acknowledge their sin (Psalm 32:1–4). This corresponds to the coarse methods used to control unreasoning animals, such as bits and bridles.

When David desired Bathsheba and committed adultery with her, he acted as senseless and out of control as an unbroken horse or mule. His animal-like behavior in the murder of Bathsheba's husband also showed that he was disobedient and out of control. Isaiah 53:6 compares disobedient people to sheep that have gone astray. To restore David, the Lord chastened him and convicted him of his moral failure. Chastening is an indicator of the Lord's faithful love (Hebrews 12:6). Without chastening, an unruly believer would continue sinning and forfeit the Lord's blessings.

Protest or Revolt? based on Galatians 3:23-4:7 and Matthew 21:1-11

For many years, I have had the chance to work with a camper I'm going to call Penny today. (So, not her real name.) Penny is a woman who has Down's Syndrome, a huge personality, and a stubborn streak that can rival my own. She is also world class at engaging in passive protest.

In practice, at camp, this most often looks like a group getting ready to go somewhere, and Penny will sit down, and simply refuse to come along. Unless, that is, someone sings her favorite song and then slowly walks away from her, requiring her to follow in order to keep hearing the song.

The song, if you were wondering, is “This Little Light of Mine,” and it gets sung A LOT when Penny is at camp. Like, 50 times a day? Maybe more. Penny is very good at bending people to her will, and she really, really, REALLY likes that song.

A thing I respect about Penny is that she isn't going to do what she doesn't want to do. You can threaten her, bribe her, argue with her, or beg her. But she will simply hold up one finger, and dance it around a little, to let you know what she expects of you.

The thing is, that the camp I run is highly dependent on people being willing to function as a group and move as a group. We're stuck when one camper doesn't stay with the group, and it can force us out of adequate supervision! Refusing to get up is the PERFECT protest for our camp, because it puts the counselors and staff into a crisis. Truthfully, Penny gets what she wants because singing “This Little Light of Mine” all day every day is a lower price to pay than not being able to function or keep our campers safe. So she gets what she wants, we get what we want, and if there is a particular song stuck in one's head for years after, at least you eventually learn to smile about it.

Also, by most ways of looking at it, Penny doesn't have a lot of power in the world. So, God love her for using what she has well.

Penny at camp functions a lot like Jesus outside of Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Jesus used what power to bring the change he wanted. He was up against the Roman Empire, but he similarly managed to put pressure on a sensitive point and get his message across clearly. The Roman Empire, however, did not concede as gracefully as the camp staff does.

Passover in Jerusalem was a conundrum for the Roman Empire. On the one hand, they wanted to show respect to an ancient faith tradition, and maintain the narrative of the Emperor's power, might and goodness. On the other hand, Passover was a celebration of God's actions in freeing the people from the oppressive power of a mighty empire, and a whole lot of people gathered very close to each other to do so, and that... felt dangerous. Because while I'm sure the Roman Empire didn't think of itself as an oppressive overlord, they maybe had a bit of an awareness that some others did. So how do you respect this important religious festival while also keeping it under control?

The Empire came up with a good answer. The local leader Pilate, the “king of the Jews,” marched into the city with a full imperial processional. There were soldiers on gleaming horses, drumlines in union, glittering silver and gold on crests, golden eagles (the symbol of Rome) mounted on poles. It was a BIG time show of power and reminder of the Empire and its hold on Jerusalem. The people who came to watch would have shouted the things they were taught to shout: Hail Caesar, son of God; Praise be to the Savior who brought the Roman Peace; Caesar is Lord.

The Empire's plan was to remind the people of the POWER and MIGHT and THREAT of the empire's military while also being “present” for the rituals – and keeping an eye on the messages from their carefully selected high priests.

It seems Jesus saw through it.

And his processional, the one that came through the East gate, brought a lot of clarity to what was happening at the West gate. Instead of a tall shiny horse, Jesus rode in on an unbroken colt (or donkey. Or both ;)). Jesus came in his ordinary cloths, without the sparkle of gold or silver. Instead of being accompanied by soldiers with weapons, Jesus came with his disciples – ordinary men known for drinking a bit too much and the inability to keep their mouths shut when they should. Instead of banners declaring the power of Rome and displaying the golden eagle, the people shimmied up palm trees and cut off the branches to wave. Palm Branches were the national symbol of Ancient Israel, their flag. The people laid their cloaks on the road for Jesus' colt to walk on. That is, they used the very little power they had as a carpet for Jesus’ feet.

Zechariah 9:9 reads “Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

Did you hear it? Your KING comes riding on a colt. Jesus wasn't just borrowing a colt – and he wasn't just being humble. He was connecting himself to the expectations of what the Jewish Messiah would look like. In fact, he was more or less claiming the crown. And the people supported him. So Jesus comes on a colt – which declares kingship – and the people wave the national flag – celebrating a new king!

To bring this into focus, Jesus riding a donkey into the East gate raised some questions:

Who is King of the Jews?

From where do they derive their power?

Does power come from the capacity to inflict violence?

Does their power come from sharing power?

Is Pilate there to celebrate God or to stop God's work?

Which parade is God in?

Jesus found the weaknesses of the Empire – in the need they had to maintain power and control with violence and with the overarching narratives of their goodness. He gave people ways to question it all, just by riding on a donkey.

While I think the Palm Sunday processional was one of the greatest nonviolent direct actions in history, it came with a very steep price. Leading people to those questions undermined the Empire itself. The Empire read it as a revolt, in fact they decided to read it as a VIOLENT revolt, which probably means it shook them to their core. Which is both VERY IMPRESSIVE as protests go, and VERY DANGEROUS as protests go. The Empire killed Jesus for leading a violent revolt agains the Empire.

And the only thing they got wrong was that it was nonviolent.

Actually, scratch that. They got two things wildly wrong. First it was nonviolent to its core. Secondly, they thought killing Jesus would kill his movement. You, listening to this sermon, right now are part of the proof of how wrong they got that one!

But to go back to the nonviolence for a moment... this is absolutely key to everything about Jesus, and it shouldn't be glossed over. The world tells us that the only power that matters is power over, and power over is enforced with violence. David Graeber in the book “Debt: A History of the First 5,000 Years” points out that only societies with inequality have police forces. And, only countries that are taking unfair shares of the world's resources spend extravagantly on their militaries. It turns out there is a direct correlation between inequality and violence, specifically state sponsored violence.

The Roman Empire was the military superpower of its day, and was also exemplary a taking wealth from the land and from the poor and syphoning it to the very, very wealthy. Who is exemplary at that today?

Anyway, Jesus didn't play by those rules. He didn't enact violence, or permit it, nor did he let the threat of it stop him. He engaged in power with, not power over. He lived nonviolence and by his very life taught its power. Paul, in the letter to the Galatians, says this as well as it has ever been said. “There is no Jew or Greek, no slave or free, there is no male or female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28)

Well, that takes care of power over!! That simple sentence teaches us that as followers of Jesus, none of the coercive power of the world applies anymore. And once that power-over is gone, along with it goes the need for violence to enforce it. What is left is space for people to work together, collaborate, help meet each other's needs, and build connections and community. Which, to be honest, is a darn good reason to join that Jesus parade and choose his values instead of supporting the representative of the Empire on the other side.

But today, I'll admit, even this story that astounds me every time I approach it, and even this Galatians passage which has one of my two favorite verses in the New Testament, still fall flatter than usual.

Because here we are, 2000 years later, in a society that sanctifies violence rather than nonviolence. In a society with about the same income distribution as the Roman Empire. In a society that STILL functions as if some people matter and some don't. It is enough to make me wonder how well this Jesus movement is really doing after all. Furthermore, there is the “Christian Nationalist” thing that claims the name of Jesus while doing all the things of the Empire... power, violence, hierarchy, in groups and out groups, all of it.

And, this being the start of Holy Week, I'm going leave this here, in the discomfort. In the reminder that things are not OK, that people misuse the name of Jesus, that God is against violence but our country specializes in it, in the incredible power of the Palm Sunday parade that was a large part of why Jesus was killed. I'm going to leave us here in the brokenness. Spoiler alert: next week I have some good news to share. But for now, here we are.

May God hear our prayers. Amen
