Song of the Week
What do you mean it’s 11:30 at night? You’re lying. I didn’t forget NOTHIGN.
Honorable Mentions:
I really liked ultimadrap the first time I heard him rap, for his fast spoken word style. That contrasts beautifully against LimJi’s ethereal vocals in Return. I also like having rhythm come from the vocal part, in this case the rap, instead of the backing track. It adds some really fun parts to listen to. Though the song is anything but fun, its pretty sad, and a pretty and sad track.
Here’s your trot video for the week, that gets bonus points for being LGBTQ inclusive. Less props when all they do is bro hug out of focus.
The whole drive of the verse of BOL4′s Workaholic lends itself to a chorus that goes quite a bit harder than the actual chorus ends up going. That being said, this is the first BOL4 song I have actually sat through, so that says something I guess. Also, the blue hair is a moment, and I am here for it. I have similar feelings about 25, though it is a bit more upbeat, so I like it a bit more.
If you have previously liked FT Island’s more ballad-y songs, you will like Quit, which feels almost like an updated version of Severely. While it doesn’t hit the spot for me, it is still a solid release, and you can bet I will eat up as many lives of it as possible, because we are losing Hongki to the army in like 2 weeks, and I am not ready. I love FT Island, and Hongki specifically, so I will definitely miss him. Also, good for them the make music without a Burning Sun member. I think they are the only group to try and move past that so far, and they did it by completely dropping his creepy ass, so props for that, especially since he was the leader.
No winner despite how much I love FT Island.

Song of the Week
There are some good comebacks this week (okay, maybe just one), RIP me.
Honorable Mentions:
More spoken word rap from ultimadrap this week. I’m not quite in the contemplative mood for it, but I’m happy to include Beauty From a Distance all the same.
The idea behind Zgirls and Zboys is . . . interesting. Let’s build a group of multiple different nationalities and lean into the k-pop style. Zgirls’ What You Waiting For is distinctly Western, both with it’s full English lyrics, but also in the style of the vocals. I do enjoy the chorus, but it is definitely a debut track in its crowd pleasing style. Zboys’ No Limit has a really fun start, but it loses me in the chorus for the same reasons that the Zgirls lost me. It is also very Western, and very heavily influenced by Western pop, rather than the K-pop it is trying to be part of.
I am offended by how cute Lee Minhyuk is for the whole of his second solo release, With Melody. It is too much to handle. The song is perfectly adequate I guess, but if you already liked him, or were in a bad mood, he does the soft boyfriend look pretty damn well in this video, so take the opportunity to enjoy it.
Hyomin’s Allure reminds me a lot of IU, in a good way. It has a similar tone, while still managing to fit into the sexy image Hyomin has built for herself in her solo work. And it feels more mature, like Mango did. Also, I’m a sucker for a syncopated chorus, so I am unsurprisingly pretty happy with it.
The chorus of SF9′s new song, Enough (Don’t Be Pretty), is a bop. The verse is a little boring in contrast, but the chorus makes up for it, driven by pretty much just a gritty synth and an 8-bit power up sound. And they bring back the high synth leading into the final chorus. It’s still not O Sole Mio for me in impact, but it is a solid release from a solid group.
My choice this week if I could break all my rules would be Let’s Shut Up & Dance, which is full English. It is also my favorite collaboration from this year, between Lay, NCT 127, and . . . Jason Derulo. It’s SM’s dance line rocking a video (that I definitely want to see the dance practices of), Lay and Jason Derulo singing their hearts out, and NCT getting the hook, and one particular very strange dance break. Like most of Jason Derulo’s dance tracks, it is instantly addicting, and sung with a ton a soul and a ton of skill. The fact that their most likely will never be a live performance of this song is a travesty. (Also, apparently it is a Michael Jackson tribute, so that’s cool).
The winner this week is Monsta X (no surprises despite Jason Derulo’s best effort). Alligator may have the weirdest premise in terms of lyrics (though the whole Jealousy call out lyric was also a thing), but it is of course a banger, because Monsta X. The chorus goes hard, Hyungwon and Minhyuk got lines (they are still way too short), and the rap line got the call and response to end all call and responses. Also, I need them to a live in the water scene outfits. K cool, thanks.
#sotw#monsta x#alligator#i honestly could have given it to lay and nct 127 and jason derulo#which is a bonkers sentence i never expected to type

Song of the Week
If I’m being honest, I woke up with a headache, which has remained all day and made me nauseous. So I am not in the mood today to take time and make sure every song gets a fair chance. Fair warning.
Honorable Mentions:
I liked ultimadrap’s previous track, and I like the newer one, Starting Point, off the same album for the same reasons. It is rap in the form of spoken word poem, with just enough musicality to be different in form.
There is a specific genre of lush R&B/Rap tracks that has been popular in Korea for the past year (maybe a bit more). Think anything that Gray has touched basically at all (or maybe Igoholic from PLT mixed with a bit of San E), with a little bit more depth, and you will get Cinderella from Rick Bridges. If you like that style originally, you will like it here too.
1 I’m not ready for B1A4 to not be 5 members anymore. 2 They all still have impressive vocals as a trio, to literally no ones surprise. 3 They are missing the magic of Jinyoung’s song writing. 4 The video of A Day of Love is adorable, so it makes up for the boring a bit (besides, I could probably listen to Sandeul sing the dictionary and still love it).
Trot is such a weird genre that is a joy to watch even if I don’t particularly like it musically. So I enjoyed watching Kim Soo Chan’s You & Me, even if I most likely will never listen to it again.
If you need a refill of uwu’s, AWEEK is freshly debuted and spends the whole of The More I See being cute. And it is perfectly serviceable, if you have a noona complex or are 16. I on the other hand don’t do the whole noona thing, and if I did, they would all be from Idol Producer 2 (Because Huaiwei exists).
I have no clue what is happening in CLC’s No, and I think I am all about it? Like, the lyrics confuse me, and the music confuses me a bit, but it works? I got reminded of Madonna for some reason while listening for a second time to see if my brain could figure out this song at all (still not really). I don like the fact that the structure is more than a little all over the place, with 3 main themes that could at any point be put into the chorus (or chorus ish area). It reminds me of last weeks Home in it’s unpredictability, and it gets the win.
#sotw#no clc#i hate hangovers#like i had literally one cider last night#and it is 1:15 and i'm still feeling like crap#alcohol allergies suck

Song of the Week
Here we go, in only slightly a rush, because life. Also, I am loving the synths that everyone is coming out with right now for creativity alone.
Honorable Mentions:
If you are in the mood for a good cry, or maybe just to be a little bit sad (or a lot bit sad, idk how you react to things), #selfharm would be a good place to start. The rap from ultimadrap flows like spoken word, and makes it’s own rhythm, which is a cool effect when added to only a piano line. But, trigger warning (which you may have gotten from the title), for talk about depression, suicide and self harm.
I almost like KNK’s Lonely Night. I would be surprised, but I have never really liked anything from them. I do really like the synths they sampled for the song, and the hook is pretty fun too. There is something in the mixing that is bothering me though, and while I usually like sax or brass samples, I am not a fan in this song.
For a sibling group to VIXX, VERIVERY sides more on the Love Equation end of their discography, than their more current work. Ring Ring Ring is cute without much interest. There are some nice harmonies in the chorus, and final hook, but it leans a bit to retro for me, without the charisma really needed to pull it off.
The Fan has reminded how much I love O.When. And while Today came out earlier this year, there is now a video, so I’m including it. If you haven’t listened to his stuff, go listen to Today, and then Picture and finally Fall in Love (they also have pretty decent videos for the most part, I like the one for Fall in Love best, but it is my favorite so . . .). And then come yell with me about how underappreciated he is on that show.
I am a sucker for a track that is actually in stereo, so I love the intro of Valkyrie, the debut track of ONEUS. It is also just a solid debut all across the board. It is a dance track, which means the vocals don’t need to be more than really well auto tuned, and the rap mostly needs to just be rhythmic. That being said, it is all done well, and more importantly, it is for the most part produced nicely, so my ear doesn’t hate me after sitting through the whole song. Also, there is a matrix reference in the video that had me dying, so that was fun.
I like Typical Ending as a song, but the MV is what actually caught me. The amount of editing that went into the start stop concept is impressive, especially as it is matched to the song so damn well.
Whoever the synth guy of WJSN’s La La Love is, they are putting in some on point work. The bass line is stunning, the chords they chose throughout are unexpected, and the hook is magical. The melody also follows an unexpected path, letting the chorus be more predictable while the verse and hook seem to ignore rules in the favor of interesting choices. I love how much this track manages to surprise me from start to finish.
While WJSN almost got the win, the senior girls brought it this week. Apink followed up the amazing I’m So Sick with the more delicate but just as on point song, Eung Eung. While the vocals are delicate, the lyrics are much more in control. The whole song proves that Apink has left their bubblegum pop days behind them, while still respecting some of the sounds and styles that made them popular, with choruses that are ear worms, and more than a few very talented vocalists. And I for one, am here for it.
