In October, Pavel Gubarev, a Russian political figure who proclaimed himself the “People’s Governor” of the Donetsk Region in 2014 and later as leader of the Donbas People’s Militia, explained that Ukrainians were, “Russian people, possessed by the devil,” and that Russia’s aim was to “convince them” that they are not Ukrainian. He added: “But if you don’t want us to change your minds, then we will kill you. We will kill as many of you as we have to. We will kill 1 million or 5 million, we can exterminate all of you.”

There seems to be a general malaise on most of Tumblr about TikTok getting banned in the United States.
I understand the problems, "brain rot", whatever but- A government banning a social media app that opened the world for many people is legitimately scary and upsetting. Say what you want but, there are MANY global and local issues that would not have gotten the same traction, recognition, and outreach without TikTok.
And then add to this that Meta/Facebook was one the largest lobbyists working to get TikTok banned... Like- I think folks should be more concerned about the implications of what this means, especially since the ban goes into effect the day before inauguration.

So russian and belarusian athletes are banned from competing under their countries' flag for the war in Ukraine but Isreali athletes are still allowed to compete under Isreali's flag despite Isreal's genocide being 4 times as deadly as the Ukrainian invasion?? Fuck Isreal. Fuck Russia. Fuck the Olympic Committee. Free Palestine. Free Ukraine.

You just know the NYT has a “style guide” for this sort of thing.
Maybe someone there should get fed up and leak it.

"Oh the media being biased/silent on Gaza is a conspiracy theory"
I am a literal journalist and this is what happened when I pitched an article to a magazine I write for:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We covered conflict before. We denounced PMs' positions as wrong before. But this is where the editor balks - anything that makes it look even vaguely like we might, possibly, support Gaza. Even if the article itself would not have been an opinion piece, but a news feature about events on the ground.
We have free press, baby! But avoid the matter entirely if you can. It's delicate and depressing, why would you talk about it? Don't rock the boat. Be quiet. You don't need to go there.
Self-censorship is alive and well.
