Manufactured by Republic Aviation, the F-105D Thunderchief was a supersonic fighter & bomber jet that could carry nuclear weapons and heavy bomb loads. This one at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center's Boeing Aviation Hangar has been restored to its Vietnam-era camouflage and was given to the Smithsonian Institution in 1981.

"The Space Shuttle Enterprise (back) and Mercury Capsule 15B 'Freedom 7-II' (front) is among many spacecraft that is on display at the National Air and Space Musuem, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center where opening ceremonies took place, in Chantilly, Virginia. On March 6, 1990, the last official Air Force flight of 972 SR 71 occurred. Setting multiple world records. These pictures tell the story of when it flew in and was placed in storage for 13 years then placed on display

Bleed in San Francisco. I’m proud to say that today this gorgeous SR-71 is the showpiece of the entire museum. The Smithsonian‘s Udvar-Hazy Center, Chantilly, VA.

The Sparrow missile is a medium range air-to-air missile with semi-active radar homing that was used by the US Air Force, Navy, and Marines. Developed by Raytheon and used in the Vietnam and Gulf wars. Pictured above is the Sparrow II, which, when developed, came with the new freedom of being able to fire at multiple different targets back-to-back. The small size and type of radar used in the Sparrow II model led to poor performance and was abandoned in 1956.

Space shuttle Discovery, the first orbiter retired from NASA’s shuttle fleet, completed 39 missions, spent 365 days in space, orbited the Earth 5,830 times, and traveled 148,221,675 miles will take the place of Enterprise at the center to commemorate past achievements in space and to educate and inspire future generations of explorers at the center."
