"I won't allow for them to continue to poison my kids," one Gulf Coast environmental justice advocate said.
Climate advocates and frontline community leaders published a letter Tuesday urging concerned individuals to join them in Washington, D.C., in early February for a sit-in at the Department of Energy where they will demand that it end the expansion of liquefied natural gas exports.
Stopping the LNG buildout has emerged as a major priority for the climate movement in recent months, as just one proposed project, Venture Global's Calcasieu Pass 2 (CP2) facility, would emit 20 times more climate pollution than the controversial Willow oil drilling project in Alaska. But CP2 is only one of more than 20 LNG export facilities planned for the Gulf Coast, which would have combined emissions that exceed those of the European Union or 850 coal plants, Stop LNG said in a statement.
"If [President Joe Biden] wants to be a true climate president, his administration will stop the approval of new LNG facilities. If not we'll keep pushing until they do," letter signatory and Gulf Coast environmental justice organizer Roishetta Ozane wrote on social media. "I won't allow for them to continue to poison my kids."
Tumblr media
The action is planned for February 6-8 at the Department of Energy. "We're writing to ask you to do something hard but important: Come to Washington D.C. in the middle of this winter, to join a demonstration and, if you can, risk arrest in a large-scale civil disobedience action," the letter—which was signed by several prominent activists including Alexandria Villaseñor, Bill McKibben, Jane Fonda, Rebecca Solnit, and Varshini Prakash—begins.
The planned direct action builds on months of pressure on the administration to stop the planned expansion of LNG exports, including a petition to the DOE signed by more than 300,000 people and a letter to Biden signed by more than 170 scientists. Polling from Data for Progress and Fossil Free Media found that 60% of likely voters would support the Biden administration limiting LNG exports.
"We need the DOE to tell the president the truth: Expanding LNG damages our climate, and economy, and the communities forced to live alongside these facilities."
"It's time to convince the Department of Energy to stop licensing new export terminals for liquefied natural gas," Tuesday's letter reads. "Time after time they've approved these proposals, so the U.S. is now the biggest exporter of gas on Earth—and that volume could quadruple if the industry has its way. There's no bigger climate bomb left on planet Earth."
There are signs the administration is paying attention to the growing clamor and may be open to a change in policy. On Monday, Politico reported that the DOE was reviewing its decision-making process for approval LNG projects to make sure that it was considering the climate, economic, and security impacts.
"This would be smart policy and good politics," Jamie Henn of Fossil Free Media posted in response to the news.
Tumblr media
The letter states that organizers "need the administration to stop CP2—the next big facility up for approval—and all other facilities by committing to a serious pause to rework the criteria for public interest designation, incorporating the latest science and economics, before any such facility is permitted," the letter reads.
"We need the DOE to tell the president the truth: Expanding LNG damages our climate, and economy, and the communities forced to live alongside these facilities," it continues. "That includes the land, water, and air in Louisiana and Texas, where most of these facilities are built—it's why some of us have fought on the front lines for years. We've rushed kids with asthma attacks to the hospital, seen our fishing spots and beaches polluted with chemicals, and breathe air filled with poisons everyday. We know what's at stake."
The letter writers said that they had committed "to keep this action peaceful in word, mood, and action." Those who cannot travel to D.C. may participate in solidarity actions from their home. Those who do plan to participate should sign up on stoplng.org. They will need to complete online training, including one session the night before risking arrest.
"2023 saw the hottest weather on this planet in at least 125,000 years; we think it is an honor to rise in defense of the planet we love, and the places where we live," the letter concludes. "Thank you for considering joining in."

What does the "banana republic is a fucked up name for a store" post you reblogged mean? I'm afraid of looking dumb.
The term "banana republic" was originally coined to describe countries in Central and South America (mainly Honduras and Guatemala) whose economies were rendered dependent on the production and export of bananas (among other agricultural goods, but mainly bananas) by American fruit corporations leveraging the power of the U.S. government, the U.S. military and the CIA.
Throughout most of the of the 20th century, American corporations such as United Fruit, Cuyamel, and the Standard Fruit Company owned large portions of these countries' lands, to the point that in some cases they controlled their railway, road, and port infrastructure, and they engaged in a variety of imperialist actions to lower production costs, such as violence against labor activists and anti wage reform lobbying.
The pinnacle of this phenomenon was the 1954 Guatemalan coup, when United Fruit convinced the goverment of US president Dwight D. Eisenhower that the elected president of Guatemala, Jacobo Árbenz (who had expropriated some of the company's unused land and given it to Guatemalan peasants) was secretly working with the Soviet Union, resulting in a CIA coup which deposed the Árbenz government and replaced it with a thirty-year right-wing military dictatorship which effectively acted as a puppet government to protect the interests of United Fruit and the U.S. government.
Nowadays the term has broadened to refer to any small, economically unstable country with an economy which has been rendered dependent on the export of a particular natural resource due to economic exploitation by a more powerful country.

medieval monks and accountants start using Italian millione ("one thousand" + augmentative suffix) to mean 10^6 by the 1200s; this spreads to other languages
Jehan Adam coins bymillion and trimillion to mean 10^12 and 10^18 in 1475
Nicolas Chuquet extends this scale up to nonyllion (10^54), with every step being another six orders of magnitude (million, byllion, tryllion, quadrillion, quyllion, sixlion, septyllion, ottylion, nonyllion) in 1484. Note that in this period, it was common to put the digit separator every six digits instead of every three.
Guillaume Budé refers to 10^9 as milliart in 1516, in a Latin text
But in 1549, Jacques Pelletier du Mans uses milliard to mean 10^12, citing Budé as a source
In the 1600s, people start putting digit separators every three digits. But some scientists and mathematicians define the numerical scale according to how digits are grouped, rather than the actual order of magnitude: thus, one billion becomes 10^9, one trillion becomes 10^12, etc, creating the short scale.
"Milliard" is eventually added to the long scale, meaning 10^9 (in keeping with Budé's usage); the first published example is from 1676
By 1729, the short-scale meaning of "billion" (10^9) has already crept into American usage
This is in keeping with French usage at the time: in 1762, the Académie Française dictionary cites billion as meaning 10^9.
By the early 19th century, France has almost completely converted to the short scale, and U.S. usage follows France; the long scale is referred to in some sources as "obsolete." But Britain is still using the long scale (and I assume Germany and most other European countries)
Over the course of the 20th century, the long scale begins to become more influential in France, presumably due to the influence of continental usage; while the short scale becomes more influential in Britain, presumably due to the influence of American English. Notably the SI system very specifically uses unique prefixes that are the same across languages, to prevent confusion!
In 1961, the French Government confirms that they're going to officially use the long scale from now on; in 1974, Britain officially switches over to the short scale, and many other English-speaking countries follow.
In 1975, the terms "short scale" and "long scale" are actually coined, by mathematician Geneviève Guitel.
One reason large number names could be so unstable for so long is, of course, that outside specialized usage they are rare, and were even more rare before modern science and large modern monetary amounts became commonplace points of discussion. Wikipedia says "milliard" wasn't common in German until 1923, when bank notes had to be overstamped during Weimar-era hyperinflation.
As it currently stands, English, Indonesian, Hebrew, Russian, Turkish, and most varieties of Arabic use the short scale; continental Europe and most varieties of Spanish outside Europe use the long scale. A few countries use both, usually in different languages, like South African English (short scale) and Afrikaans (long scale) or Canadian English (short scale) and Canadian French (long scale) . Puerto Rico uses the short scale in economic and technical usage, but the long scale in publications aimed at export.
Notably some languages use neither, having their own names for large numbers--South Asian languages have the Indian numbering system, and Bhutan, Cambodia, and various East Asian languages also have their own numbering systems. Greek, exceptionally, uses a native calque of the short scale rather than a borrowing.

“Cannot Pay Duty On Free Potatoes,” Toronto Globe. October 27, 1932. Page 4. ---- Dakotans Offer Needy Manitobans Vegetables ‘for the Digging’ ---- TARIFF LIFT REFUSED --- (Canadian Press Despatch.) Winkler, Man., Oct. 26. - While farmers of North Dakota are obliged to let their potato crop rot for lack of market, Manitoba farmers of this district, who lost their crops through drought and the grasshopper plague, say they will be forced to go on relief money to pay the duty on North Dakota potatoes which the farmers below the line have offered ‘for the digging.’
Intervention on their behalf for the institution of a special arrangement by which the residents of the district might be exempted from payment of 45-cents-a-bushel tariff, was made by J. L. Brown, member of the Federal House for Lisgar. In reply to the latter’s request, the Minister of National Revenue, Hon. E. B. Ryckman, wrote: ‘I dare say you have in mind the action which was taken some years ago in connection with the importation of hay. I do not feel this is a proper remedy for the unfortunate condition in which the residents of this place find themselves. It practically means the establishment of a sectional tariff, which is unsound in principal.

"If President Biden's climate commitments are to be taken seriously, his administration must take immediate, meaningful steps that stop EXIM from supporting polluting industries," said one campaigner.
Climate advocates on Wednesday formally urged the Biden administration to instruct the United States' export credit agency to stop financially supporting activities that are fueling the climate emergency.
"Over the last two centuries, human-caused greenhouse gas emissions have led to global warming of 1.1ºC above preindustrial levels by 2020 and caused detrimental changes in Earth's climate," Friends of the Earth (FOE) and the Global Law Alliance for Animals and the Environment wrote to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Stressing the threat that global heating poses to "our planet and its biodiversity" as well as "human rights, national security, and global financial stability," the pair warned that "greenhouse gas emissions must be cut in half by 2030 if warming is to be limited to 1.5ºC, the limit necessary to avoid the worst impacts of climate change."
Their letter calls on Blinken to "make a determination pursuant to the Chafee Amendment in the Charter of the U.S. Export-Import Bank... that EXIM should deny applications for financial support for all activities and projects whose life-cycle emissions intensity substantially contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and the climate crisis."
As the letter lays out:
EXIM is an independent federal agency that facilitates the export of U.S. goods and services in order to support the employment of American workers. EXIM provides loans, guarantees, insurance, and credit to American exporters, providing funding when "private sector lenders are unable or unwilling to" and helping to make U.S. exports competitive against foreign exports. In fiscal year 2023, EXIM approved more than $8.7 billion in direct loans, loan guarantees, and insurance. EXIM's total portfolio exposure as of September 2023 was more than $34 billion. Major industrial sectors supported by EXIM include oil & gas (24%), manufacturing (20.2%), and power projects (8.2%)—all of which are significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. In just a four-year period, from 2017 to 2021, EXIM financed $5.78 billion for fossil fuel projects alone. EXIM's financial support is backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government.
Erica Lyman, a law professor and director of the Global Law Alliance at Lewis & Clark Law School, explained in a statement that "administrations in the past have utilized the Chafee Amendment when national interests hang in the balance, and the catastrophic impacts of climate change are among the worst human rights, environmental, and national security challenges we face."
"The administration now has an important opportunity to continue to stand by its climate commitments to end federal funding for overseas fossil fuel projects," Lyman added.
Green groups including FOE have repeatedly sounded the alarm about EXIM's actions since President Joe Biden—who campaigned on various climate pledges—took office in 2021, including its October decision to fund the Liwathon oil tank project in Estonia and its March move to provide a $500 million loan for oil and gas expansion in Bahrain.
"Although President Biden has taken significant steps towards lowering greenhouse gas emissions, EXIM has refused to implement the president's commitment to end government support for fossil fuel projects abroad in nearly all circumstances," the letter states. "Instead, it continues to provide hundreds of millions—and sometimes billions—of dollars each year towards activities and projects whose life-cycle emissions intensity substantially contributes to high greenhouse gas emissions."
"EXIM's decision to continue providing this financial support undermines the administration’s commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fighting climate change," the letter argues. "The president should use the Chafee Amendment to force EXIM to stop its harmful financing decisions that run counter to U.S. national interests and policies."
FOE president Erich Pica emphasized that "a commitment from President Biden is meaningless without requisite action."
"This is where the rubber meets the road," he said. "If President Biden's climate commitments are to be taken seriously, his administration must take immediate, meaningful steps that stop EXIM from supporting polluting industries."

Increasing U.S. Exports to Cuba
As discussed in a prior post, U.S. exports to Cuba increased in 2023. [1] Here are more details on those exports.[2] Last year, “U.S. companies, many based in Miami and Hialeah, exported food and agricultural products worth $342.6 million. That’s a 12.4% increase from 2021, when private enterprises, known in Cuba as pymes, were first authorized, and exports to Cuba reached $304.7…

Saito has made a career of teasing out an eco-theory from the late, unpublished writings of Karl Marx. He earned his doctorate at Humboldt University, in Berlin, and now teaches philosophy at the University of Tokyo. His first book was an English version of his dissertation, titled “Karl Marx’s Ecosocialism” (2017), which tracked Marx’s study of the physical world and communal agricultural practices. (Saito is fluent in Japanese, German, and English.) In a second academic book, “Marx in the Anthropocene” (2022), Saito drew on an expanded repertoire of Marx’s unpublished notebooks to argue for a theory of “degrowth communism.” He gained a following, not only in philosophical circles but among a Japanese public facing the contradictions of tsunamis, billionaires, and same-day shipping. “Slow Down” has sold more than half a million copies in Japan and launched Saito into a rare academic celebrity. He appears regularly on Japanese television and aspires to the public-intellectual status of Thomas Piketty, the French economist who had a surprise hit in his 2013 doorstop, “Capital in the Twenty-first Century.”
The key insight, or provocation, of “Slow Down” is to give the lie to we-can-have-it-all green capitalism. Saito highlights the Netherlands Fallacy, named for that country’s illusory attainment of both high living standards and low levels of pollution—a reality achieved by displacing externalities. It’s foolish to believe that “the Global North has solved its environmental problems simply through technological advancements and economic growth,” Saito writes. What the North actually did was off-load the “negative by-products of economic development—resource extraction, waste disposal, and the like” onto the Global South.
If we’re serious about surviving our planetary crisis, Saito argues, then we must abandon capitalism, with its insatiable appetites. We must reject the ever-upward logic of gross domestic product, or G.D.P. (a combination of government spending, imports and exports, investments, and personal consumption). We will not be saved by a “green” economy of electric cars or geo-engineered skies. Slowing down—to a carbon footprint on the level of Europe and the U.S. in the nineteen-seventies—would mean less work and less clutter, he writes. Our kids may not make it, otherwise.
