Check out this desert bum, dream hunk. Thanks to @blackowlmedia for this incredible portrait from when I typed poems at the @joshuatreemusicfestival in May. Yes, that is a cat bandana that I borrowed from my cat lover roommates in West Philly to wipe all the dust from my nose and blow out the arid West Coast air. I was the dreamiest, wordslinger, poet outlaw around. Well, besides the ever charming @typewritertroubadour who joined me for this adventure. Good vibes! Can’t wait for the next poetry excursion to the southwest in a couple weeks. #dreampoetforhire #poetforhire #poetryondemand #streetwriters #poemstore #typewritertroubadour #buskinglife #busker #typewriterpoetry #poetsofinstagram #marshalljameskavanaugh #publicpoetry #creativematters #joshuatreemusicfestival #californiatypewriter (at Joshua Tree Music Festival) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzqPJPsDhmb/?igshid=1a7zsi7hynag3

I find myself reflecting on different thought pieces that pop up in my feed about how in this moment we are living through a period of collective trauma. All of us feeling the loss, the grief, and the resultant depression in response to the social distance and isolation in our world right now. Even with hope on the horizon, there is so much unknown in the future and so much that won’t return from the past. The emotions of it all are often hard to find words for. I find it especially challenging in the poems I write in the park these days. It feels like a practice of balance. Not everyone right now is looking for the bright side of their experience. New age mantras only pointing to the growth as a result of a challenge, feel like they invalidate the suffering. I find myself pushed to acknowledge the depths of the struggle. A dream poet, I can’t help but give a turn of hope in the last line of each poem, but sometimes I think what is asked of me is to merely offer a vocabulary for these dull, dead, hazy, brain fog moments we sometimes wake up to amidst all that is going on in the world right now. Once we have the words for an emotion, perhaps we can begin to fully process it. Trauma takes more than a poem, though. It requests time and a warm, safe space for the healing to start. I feel so grateful that in this practice of poetry, I too am forced to slow down and reflect on my own experience in this collective trauma. Give myself the time and space to navigate this dislocated world. Move towards the extended light that is offered each spring, but remember to not rush myself. Or rush anyone else. We’re all navigating so much right now. A poem can be a reflection of the diversity of those experiences or a reminder to take a moment each day and smell the magnolias. Either way, as my friend @typewritertroubadour likes to say, #PoetrySavesLives.
