I am planning on writing a haikyuu fanfiction where one of the characters has type 1 diabetes with celiac and epilepsy They are serious about pursuing volleyball professionally. and i was wondering if you could point me in the right direction. How would he need to adjust insulin levels for practices and games? How often should he check his blood? Would seizure medication affect sugar levels? If he ingests gluten how would that affect his sugar levels?

these are some wonderful questions, and i'm gonna throw a lot of info and resources at you! first, anecdotally, celiac and t1d are pretty commonly comorbidities (occuring together) bc they're both autoimmune diseases. i know a lot of people with both, including one of my best friends from when i was a kid. and i have an epileptic family member, so i'm just all around excited about your ask :D

How would he need to adjust insulin levels for practices and games? How often should he check his blood?

for t1d and sports, i recommend checking out this page on diathlete, which is all about managing blood sugar while doing (often very competetive) sports. (i am NOT a sporty person, but i DID do karate extensively for about fifteen years, and a lot of activity comes down to: checking bg often, keeping low bg supplies nearby in case, and having a lot of protein before activity to keep your blood sugar steady.

modern pumps normally have an activity mode built in, but before that, most people would manually reduce insulin before/during a game. not everyone has to do this tho.

(common snacks are PB and bananas, cheese and crackers, yogurt, etc. stuff with some carbs to go with the protein.)

for anit-epileptic meds, idk enough about them to say if they affect bg, unfortauntely. if you have specific meds in mind, i would look up common side effects on drugs.com (i promise that's a real, professional, non-shady site lol)

idk if seizures affect bg, actually! great question! i'll say that stress (such as, having a seizure) tends to make blood sugar go up. however, i'm tempted to think a tonic-clonic seizure (the kind with heavy shaking) could count as a form of activity? i'm not sure how to guide you here, unfortunately

people with celiac who ingest gluten are going to experience severe inflammation, which is commonly known to increase blood sugar levels AND make a person temporarily more insulin resistant. high BG also causes more inflammation, so. feedback loop.

also, gluten is a carbohydrate, and if your character isn't used to eating it, will probably have trouble figuring out exactly how to bolus insulin for it. (even if they know the exact carb counts, different types of carbs take longer to digest and can require bolusing earlier or later than for other types of carbs.)

so i found this AWESOME page from the Wiley library from 2010 talking about the history of the insulin pump. def recommend reading through it, it's not that long and it's really cool. i also stole the following image from there, which answers your question.

animas went out of business or was discontinued a few years ago but was popular for a while before that. i have the omnipod, and have had the omnipod since 2006/2007, so if you have technical questions, feel free to throw them my way.

as for glucometers, don't feel like you have to mention brand names. they all work basically the same way; turn on, insert strip, poke finger, hold bloody finger to appropriate edge of strip, yell a lot bc you didn't get enough blood or the meter timed out, and rinse repeat until everything is successful.

brand names from 2000s/2010s i can think of include: freestyle, one touch (my old beloved), accu-chek. the original omnipod handheld controler (the PDM) had a meter inside it, which was awesome.

Does pricking your fingers make them sore?

yes.

it doesn't always hurt, but, imagine poking yourself with a small, fast-moving needle. if you get just the right spot, you won't feel it. if you get the WRONG spot, g-d help you cause you'll feel it for days.

also, constant pricking creates scar tissue. i haven't really pricked my finger for about two years now unless my pump/cgm stops working, but i still have limited feeling in my fingertips. like, can tap hot pans to see how hot they are without causing pain. i don;t recommend this but i do it, so. don't be like me :'D

good news is the visible scars--little black spots--went away eventually!

Does injecting insulin into your gut make that area painful when pressure is put into it(when diving for the ball)?

it sure can!

bruises are common from injecting, pumps and cgm sites also cause bruises. like after you get a vaccine? some areas bruise worse than others, this differs person to person and site to site. but if someone can feel it, it's just like making contact with any other bruise.

could the pump/monitor be placed on the body unlikely to be hit by the ball?

general recommend placement sites are, for starters:

back of the upper arms

abdomen on either side of the belly button to the hip

thighs (front or side, some people also do back of thigh)

upper buttocks (the fattiest area)

lower back (where love handles show up)

ideally you want it placed in fattier areas. muscle is ok but moves a lot and can disturb the site. bony areas = 0/10, do not recommend. much pain.

people place sites basically anywhere bc scar tissue builds up and you run out of room eventually (rotating sites is very important bc it delays scar tissue forming!). some popular alternative, non-insurance-approved areas are:

the back of the forearm (i recommend shaving first, this hella hurt when i peeled off the adhesive and idk why it's so popular)

back of calf (i like this one)

shoulder blades (love this spot, but awkward to reach and awkward with bras)

and chest (have not personally tried)

which is the least likely to get smashed into by the ball, the ground, or another player? idk, i never played volleyball. back of the arm, probably? that, stomach, and thighs are typically the go-to for most people, i think, so you can't really go wrong there. it's good that you're thinking of it, bc it is a concern that athletes have to consider

there are also sleeves and extra adhesives available to help keep sites from ripping off or falling off. this website has a few different types so you can see wim.

omnipods are cool for sports bc they don't have any tubes to get tangled up or caught on something. other pumps all have thin tubes connecting the insulin reservoir and electronic parts to the actual site, and i have never understood how people manage to play sports and NOT get their tubed pump ripped off??? but lots of people don't have major problems with it ig.

I’m going to discuss just the diabetes aspect of this ask, not being Black, bc I am not Black but my diabetes is old enough to vote.

Aaron explained everything pretty well. Stem cell research is extremely experimental to the point I’d only include it if you’re writing science fiction or cutting edge medical fiction.

If you’re interested in researching potential cures that have been in trials for a while and still look promising, I’d look into Dr. Faustman’s clinical research or BreakthroughT1D’s Cure page.

Also, just to clear up a few things:

autoimmune diseases like t1d aren’t typically inherited so much as the genetic probability of developing it is inherited. I’m the only one in my family with t1, but there’s more than half a dozen other autoimmune conditions shared between just three of my immediate relatives.

If this difference is confusing, lmk.

Also, this could just be me, but someone inheriting a condition typically makes me think they were born with it? Which is actually very rare for diabetes. If I’m misunderstanding this, feel free to ignore this point!

Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most commonly diagnosed health conditions in the US (specifying bc it’s the US stats I’m familiar with) across multiple ethnicities.->

On average, 10% of the population has a type of diabetes mellitus. Only about 1% has type 1 specifically. Type 2, which is metabolic rather than autoimmune, is far more prevalent.

Type 1 diabetes is one of the most common childhood diagnoses, either equal to or right behind asthma. I haven’t looked into those stats in a while so idk what’s currently winning the popularity contest.

Characters with any type of diabetes can definitely belong in slice-of-life stories, even without cures. I’d argue especially without cures.

If you’re looking for an emotional arc specifically regarding diabetes, the diagnosis itself is pretty standard to talk about for good reasons: it’s a huge life changing event. There’s also plenty of other options. Off the top of my head:

helping someone else who’s been recently diagnosed bc the character knows what they’re going through

dealing with romance or parenthood or any big life changes while having diabetes

changing treatment methods (getting/losing a service animal, switching from injections to a pump or vice versa, etc)

I'm nonblack and writing a comfy slice of life alternate future story featuring characters dealing with various personal things like disabilities and mental illnesses. One of the characters I'm writing is black with inherited type 1 diabetes who eventually goes through stem cell therapy to treat it, where there was meant to be a long arc of the character staying alone for a year because of temporary immunosuppressants yet having their best friends make sure to keep them constant company. It was a completely random trait that I thought would fit the character and their story entirely unrelated to their race, but I had no idea that diabetes was one of the most common conditions black americans are diagnosed with until today, and I worry it could be insensitive of me to go through with the idea. Should I stay safe and rewrite the character? Or am I in the clear as long as I'm still careful to not perpetrate other tropes?

So I see you've already taken this to creatingblackcharacters, great job because that was going to be the first thing I told you to do. You might also try @type1diabetesinfandom, and we're also opening this one up to feedback from our followers. Black people in real life do sometimes have diabetes and there's nothing inherently wrong with a Black character having diabetes, but there are sensitivity issues in that diabetes is heavily stigmatized as a moral failure and the fault of the person who has it, and that combines with racism in a truly ugly mix that makes life hard for Black people with diabetes, as they're seen as "even worse" than non-diabetic Black people and non-Black diabetics, as if their "moral failing" (there is no moral failing in having diabetes, the pancreas is unrelated to the morals) is even worse purely because they're Black. It's a complicated thing to depict and you need to be mindful of it. Do a lot of research on the issues impacting Black people with diabetes

Also, keep in mind that the stem cell therapy you mentioned is currently extremely experimental. There have been a few cases where it worked really well but also cases where it didn't, and early trials are still ongoing. Your character would need to be part of a trial group, they aren't offering this treatment in the average doctor's office. I'd recommend doing a lot of research into the experiences of the people who've tried this treatment and maybe into the experiences of people who have been in other experimental treatment trials to make the depiction as accurate as possible. This is not a miracle cure at this point, not even close, it's barely a step up from the Milwaukee Protocol, and it's entirely possible that this stem cell research will not work or will need years upon years of research and modification before it can be given as a standard treatment.

Plus, the character's status as a Black person will likely impact their quality of care and could even impact their ability to participate in drug trials and medical experiments, something else to keep in mind.

My advice here is to do a lot of research and be careful, and to see if the comments and the other linked blogs have anything to add. Thank you for the question

I think he would be a college professor, and he would teach Physics. I could also see him going into Quantum physics and Quantum Theory as like his main thing. (He's the professor everyone wants a piece of)

Regarding his family I don't think he talks to them. In modern world I could see his family be considered high ranking or like famous in a way. (In some kind of business or something) I think the only family member he talks to is Yuta.

I think his family tries to bribe him into talking to him by sending him money or gifts In which he gives to Suguru

Him and Toji have massive beef. He has partial parental rights to Megumi and helped raise him. He met the other students through Megumi from dropping him off/picking him up from places.

Him and Suguru met in highschool and became best friends (Boyfriends in denial).

He's surprisingly not on the verge of getting type 2 diabetes

He's a huge flirt and may come off as a guy who would rather do casual one-night stands, but if he has his eyes on someone, he would definitely be loyal asf to them as possible.

He collects vinyls and has a record player and a walkman for cassettes.

Being Roommates

They moved in together after high school.

Gojo CAN and WILL walk around the apartment butt-ass-naked. He's flashed Geto multiple times because of this. (He also slept in his bed once or twice)

Gojo has also on multiple attempts, tried to bring a feral/wild animal home to have as a pet.

Suguru has to do all of the grocery runs because he doesn't trust Gojo to do it.

They do 50/50 housework and split everything.

When they go out with friends, Suguru is the one usually driving Satoru home after being insanely drunk.

They tend to borrow each other's things a lot. If Gojo likes a shirt Suguru is wearing, he is stealing it to wear it. If Suguru runs out of shaving cream, he will use Gojo's.

They also take each other's stuff unintentionally.

Gojo is trying to find his shirt for work, but Suguru accidentally took it, thinking it was his.

When arguments happen, they makeout after to makeup one of them usually leaves the house for a bit to cool off. Or they both go to their designated rooms to cool off then talk later.

Gojo uses a 10 in 1 toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, body scrub, body wash, deodorant, facial cleanser, lotion, spf, moisturizer. While Geto uses 4 products for his hair, 12 products for his skin, 2 oils for his nails, lotion specifically for his tattoos, ointments for his piercings, and has 3 different ChapSticks.

Suguru has the really expensive shampoo and conditioner and threatens to kick Gojo out when he uses it all without replacing it.

They have matching tattoos of black and white koi fish.

I'm going to be honest, I've always been confused (and more than a little uncomfortable) with the Narilamb (and occasionally other ships in this fandom, but it's mostly Narilamb) plotline where either the Lamb or Narinder gets mentally and physically age regressed into an infant or child, and the other (who's still an adult) has to take care of them.

Because like- are they still technically lovers??? Is it a parent and child dynamic now??? I can't imagine it still being Narilamb if it's the latter. And if it's the former... do people not see the implications of that? Of an adult Narinder taking care of an infant Lamb and it still being labeled as a ship? Like, there are so many posts where they focus on the Lamb fawning over how cute baby Narinder is, but do they view him as their child or their husband??

Looks down on many of the other sinners, she kinda ranks them in her head (waste of breath, fixable, I can work with this, decent, the manager)

Gregor

Doesn't really know how to take a compliment since he doesn't usually get complimented

Has long antenna coming from his head along with the bug arm, also unfinished/underutilized/healed over wings that sometimes nub up under his back when he's stressed but don't break through his skin (like g corp Greg's wings)

Whenever he's in battle his eyes kind of glaze over and he disassociates, buggy bits kinda take over

Gregor doesn't like killing especially when it's not very necessary, makes him think of the war and his buddies 

Gregor also has watery eyes, this is not specifically during battle but just in general. Sometimes when he lays on his side the eye on that side starts to tear up and leak

During intense moments, little bits of exoskeleton and chitin harden on him; like a patch of shell on the side of his or his buggy shoulder extends up a bit

Actually prefers stale or slightly turned food since he got modified but he doesn't tell anyone cause he's embarrassed and kind of ashamed of it (based on book Gregor not liking fresh food and only eating rotten or bad food, but less intense)

Dante

Amnesia, latex allergy, some kind of chronic pain (arthritis possibly), (TBC)

Nonbinary they/them intersex clock with a pair of sick tits (Dante deserves boobs)

Actual like. Dark gray skin 

Usually a bit of a nervous loser but occasionally has bouts of confidence/competence/authority similar to how they were from before they lost their head

Also likes to keep themself busy with work similar to Ishmael (they are trying their hardest to be a really good manager despite being thrown into this role suddenly)

Communicates with people that aren't the sinners through writing, simple sign language (they're still learning), making a sinner translate, or tracing letters on people

Gets phantom pains all the time, especially is a sinner died an exceptionally painful death recently

Clock has feeling like a real head

Gets repairs and check ups for their internal mechanisms, the clock even more sensitive inside the clock. all the wires and gears and stuff feel strange

Gregor and Ryoshu sometimes take smoke breaks with each other or light each others cigarettes 

Meursault and Heathcliff sometimes "play dress up" or "cosplay" with Don, Heathcliff refuses to be anything that's not somewhat badass though (Meursault has worn a dress before. Meursault does not talk about this incident.)

Outis and Gregor have a mutual kind of respect, and disdain for each other. They respect each other as veterans. Outis is a bit disappointed in his deserting and not seeing the war till the end. Gregor is freaked out by her "at least I didn't die" mindset compared to his "why was I the one that had to live" mindset

Gregor empathizes greatly with Dante whenever he sees them being dehumanized because of their prosthetic. He actively tries to talk and befriend Dante to make sure they never feel lonely or worthless

Gregor and Yi Sang both have midnight cravings and they dig through the dining room trash can for stale food. One night they both ran into each other in the dark while making their way to the trash can, Gregor nearly exploded in embarrassment. They don't talk about it, or at least Gregor doesn't. Both of them think about it pretty often though, more often then they'd expect

You pointed out something so true. Some that are adamant at admitting T/anner and M/ary and are “just friends” comes from the fact they don’t think someone as fit as T/anner could date her. They cannot fathom in their mind how he could date someone that doesn’t fit the “standard”. And like, they’re basically the same people and there’s a reason they have been best friends for so long. Like, it’s been on my mind for a while and you hit the nail on it.

I sadly believe one of the reasons they don’t confirm their relationship is because of the increasing hate she’s been getting. Like, some people on this fandom already hates her for playing Sam (because of their own misogynistic ideas) and project that onto M/ary, but she’s been getting massively bullied for a while now because she gained some weight and doesn’t dress or acts to feed this celebrity idea. TikTok is unbearable but it has started to migrate to Instagram. It’s been terrible to watch. And I think it’s also the reason why she quit social media and isn’t as open with her life anymore.

I saw some videos of her at the red carpet for CK 6 and I hope I’m wrong but she seemed a bit uncomfortable and it breaks my heart because she’s a beautiful woman with eyes to die for and it’s so refreshing to see a healthy standard body on TV because we are so often feed those “beauty standards” that don’t represent real woman. Plus, she’s on her late 20’s. We don’t lose the weight as easy as before and she’s a type 1 diabetic which means losing weight is already hard. She cannot get into a crazy diet to fit people’s beauty standards.

It’s very sad but a big majority of the CK fandom act like incels on the internet.

I come from a time primarily when, if you wanted to insult someone - you had to do it to their face. Now people don’t have to atone for their bad behaviour unless caught. Not saying people weren’t cruel then either but it makes a difference. People can be ruthless regardless, but the internet has made it more anonymous and acceptable.
