Can you talk more about Florian and Mara airing out the Ravens dirty laundry? You mentioned it on my RIP Riko meme post and I’ve been curious about it. (Also just talk more about those OCs too if you wanted. Who are they n what’s their deal?)

with TSC now out I've been able to refine them and some of their facts and also more of what they'd spill about the Ravens and their experiences

putting this under the cut for TSC spoilers and also cause it'll probably be a long post

quick rundown of Mara and Florian's characters ig

Florian Laska (he/they):

19 years old

extremely bisexual

an early recruit to the Ravens who graduated high school early with the intent of running away from his mother as soon as possible

started playing for the Ravens at age 16

started as dealer but now plays as a striker

got a severe injury "in a scrimmage" with the Ravens that resulted in the loss of his leg, he continues playing with a prosthetic

fingers are heavily mishapen from being broken so many times and never set

dropped out Edgar Allan University for reasons still unknown (refusal to explain to the press)

wanted to be a nursing student

at the time of TSC is the youngest recruit for the olympic court and plays with fellow former raven Mara Fasil

commitment issues

covered in scars the most noticable being around his wrists, self harm scars, and a bite mark on his neck

learned french from Jean and Mara and bits and pieces of arabic and berber from Mara

told Kevin if his hand didn't get better they could just chop it off and give him a new one like they did with Florian's leg

Mara Fasil (she/her):

23 years old

if I did my math right she would've been a junior at the time Florian started with the Ravens

i don't actually remember if the Ravens have rules against partners being different genders but um if they do then fuck that because Mara was Florian's partner and they're still unhealthily codependent

wanted to major in architecture

she's lost track of how many times her nose has been broken but she's pretty sure it's in the double digits. has been pressured to get surgery to straighten it and refuses to

a raging lesbian who's also a raging asexual

personally i think she should date thea but idk ig i can't have everything

a dealer

still has not adjusted to 24 hour days

graduated in 4 years instead of the expected 5 which was partially motivated by Florian dropping out

ANYWAY these two are major troublemakers especially for their Olympic teammates. Florian is typically much more subdued and grounded than Mara who is more hot tempered and has trouble watching her mouth except for that time that Florian yelled at Tetsuji in front of a bunch of players from a variety of teams (and immediately threw up) (this was post leaving the Ravens)

Mara has a bad habit of just not shutting her mouth around the press now that she's allowed to be in front of them. she will not so subtly imply that most of her injuries are not from innocent practices and games. Has engaged in twitter discourse by dropping memes (specifically dropped one of that grant gustin peace sign meme with riko's name on the grave and "me" written over grant gustin shortly after riko's death)

Florian's exposure of the Ravens is largely from slip ups in front of the press. Pulled a Kevin Day "did you never know I've never been skiing" implying him losing his leg wasn't caused by a really bad scrimmage injury and was a lot more purposeful than that. Refused to meet with the press for 3 months following the incident.

it's almost impossible to catch the two separately. and if they aren't seen together they're always with someone else (usually Emiko or another member of the Olympic team, who did not sign up for this shit rip). Florian specifically has a godawful time not being with someone 24/7 (if he's at an Exy event and can't find any of his team he will purposefully seek out other Ravens, usually Kevin or Jean if he can find them, or Thea if she's there)

It's by the time TSC rolls around/the end of TKM that Florian starts getting pissed off enough to start purposefully dropping hints to the press about the Ravens. When the investigation starts and Tetsuji resigns a lot of his comments become a lot more targeted and it eventually results in Jeremy seeing enough that he contacts Kevin to get Florian's contact info so he can hopefully get some answers (he is only somewhat successful and Florian tells him it's only cause he has such a pretty face)

I don't know how yet but one of them, Florian I think, has some ties to the Moriyama's albeit distant that manage to snag them some level of protection from Ichirou so they don't yk get killed

Florian has visible scarring he does often hint at coming from other Ravens and it being purposeful. Mara has outright stated she was a target of many of her teammates. Mara has also called the Ravens a shit team which Florian then tried to smooth over and failed to do so (couldn't call them a good team without implying they're only that successful cause they play dirty)

Florian's a lot more snarky (and really just an outright cunt) in private and without cameras in his face but if he's being hounded enough it'll come out and he has flipped off more reporters than he'd like to admit

basically they're stupid and stumbling their way through dealing with the press for the first time in their lives and it just happens to coincide with the Ravens having the WORST time

that's where i'm leaving it cause this shit has gotten too long omg though i'd love to talk about Em and Ilya at some point I cannot keep writing an essay on these guys lmao

EVERY character thematic is getting nailed in the head, optimus’s melancholy, arcee’s rage, beachcomber’s philosophy, DUDE I WAS GAGGED AT HOW GOOD THAT BEACHCOMBER ISSUE WAS…how he chose not to revive everyone because he knew they carried the war wherever they went im just. Insane??? And Optimus?? Optimus in this series?? His character has always felt like the sage serious leader but in Skybound he just has so much….heaviness? It reads so well that he carries a quiet sadness all the time. THAT SCENE WITH HIM AND ELITA WHEN HE HAD TO CHOOSE BETWEEN EARTH AND CYBERTRON??? OK KICK ME IN THE GUTS WHILE IM DOWN WHY DONT YOU SKYBOUND???

And soundwave……Bro……..SOUNDWAVE……….…I JUST……………soundwave’s character has always been for a backdoors-background role, communications officer and all the nitty gritty finer workings behind the scenes, quiet and passive and going along with the narrative wherever it takes him—his character always feels guided along by the tomfoolery of the rest of the ensemble. but skybound made him such an active brutal threat like dude. they slapped him right on the frontlines killed off his cat for ten-something issues straight up had him rip out starscream’s guts and declare himself the leader. lies and cheats the favour of thundercracker and preaches his deluded greater good by razing everything lesser in his way to the ground. dude. he is evil. he burns cities. he is delusional. I haven’t seen a take on soundwave’s character before that ever made him so loud about being evil. I would fight for skybound like they were my country

also!! skybound gave this panel to the world which is pretty much what the inside of my head has sounded like for six months

while I’m at it can I just….the art style for skybound ohhhh my god. The heavy gritty inking, the incredible, incredible stylized sfx, the vibrant colours they use for backgrounds and for palettes. This is my favourite art style of any comic series I’ve read recently and it’s such a huge inspiration (the big ol switcheroo fight comic was heavilyyyyy inspired by how skybound stylizes sfx and colours….) i just cant get enough of it. The way texture is hatched the way they made these clunky metal robots so fluid and expressive…..

also I just. Really love how they draw cliffjumper specifically. like this is a 50 year old man with a retirement plan

Now, Trein doesn't play favorites buuuuuuut he'll check in with her to make sure she's being taken care of. It may also help that one of his daughters is also a bold red head.

Sam is up there, too. He's a strong second. He gives her part time work at the student store when she needs it. He saves her from having to rely on the Mostro Lounge for extra income... and by extension Azul

thank you for asking about my boys!! their story has changed a lot since I last posted about them, they are two extremely haunted best buds who work at a local convenience store!

Frid’s a retired necromancer, probably the only one who exists, given that necromancy isn’t really a profession you retire from. He’s crossed a lot of spirits in the past, and now that he’s out of his line of work they’re all coming back to haunt him!

Jerry is the only normal human guy in the story and he sees all this paranormal tomfoolery going down and is disturbingly chill about it

There’s a lot of different ways that necromancers gain and cast their magic—they are playing around with life and death after all, and there’s some pretty weird powers that can come out of that. gliss, roro, and frid each specialize in something different, hopefully I can draw more art on that soon!

Ahhhh thank you both so much I love love love thinking about this. The ROs mean so much to me and I love thinking about them as people, with all of the experiences that comes with it. Answering below the cut because this is gonna be an essay <3

Beck - ever since Beck was little they knew that sometimes they felt like a boy and sometimes they felt like a girl and sometimes both or neither or something else entirely...but they also didn't fully realize that not everyone felt that way. If her sister got mad at her for stealing & wearing her clothes it was because her sister was mean, not because she was 'supposed to be' something else. If her parents got on their case for not conforming; well, their parents were always on their case. Not anything different when it was because they caught them kissing a boy. It wasn't really until late middle school that Beck fully understood that they were different.

To this day they don't really have the words to describe their gender. They just know it changes, and they do what they can to broadcast that to the people around them. Most people don't get him, but that's nothing new. His sexuality is even more complex too describe in exact words, for him, but he knows he's been attracted to all sorts of people. Queer fits, and he doesn't really feel the need to try to define it further than that.

Croft- unlike all of the other ROs, Croft is from modern day and unquestionably grew up on tumblr lmao. They are very knowledgeable about the spectrum of gender and sexuality. Unfortunately how they figured out that they're trans is a spoiler (it's a story that will be much more fun to read in game lol), but they figured out that they're on the ace spectrum in high school. All of their friends were obsessed with dating and sex and they thought they'd lost their minds. And then eventually (after answering one too many "who do you have a crush on???" questions) they went. Wait a second maybe I'm one one who's different here.

In college, though, they fell desperately and unquestionably in love with their only long term partner to date. She was mysterious and beautiful and a self-described witch...and one of their best friends. Croft was obsessed and realized that maybe they aren't actually fully asexual. Clearly there's the potential for attraction, if they're connected enough to someone. So they mentally adjusted the label they use to demisexual and went on their merry way.

F!Jay- gotta split Jay up because it deeply depends on their gender. But, as I think I've mentioned before, when f!Jay and Yasmin were younger teenagers they had a classic homoerotic teenage best friendship going on. Jay had a massive crush on Yas, they cuddled and held hands all the time, they were each other's first kiss (to ~practice~ ofc). And it was all totally platonic, because they were both girls!!!

Spoiler alert: it wasn't. When Yasmin and Seth started dating Jay felt weirdly jealous and brokenhearted. She talked to her mom about it, and Grace was just like. Honey. Baby girl. And Jay was like but I don't even like girls like that!!! She was in denial for a bit until she joined the co-ed baseball team, realized she spent a bit too long admiring all of her teammates in a way that definitely wasn't platonic, and then went. Oh. Huh.

M!Jay- he really doesn't think about this sort of thing the same way his female counterpart does. Jay is a pretty damn emotionally intelligent guy...but he doesn't really do introspection all that well. So his own path to self discovery was a lot more like. Damn my teammates have nice form. And look great in their baseball pants. And then proceeded to not really think all that deeply about it until he was (unknowingly) fawning over how good one of their male teammates looked and Seth was just like........."bro I love u no matter what you can tell me if you're gay."

And Jay was just silently like. What the hell do you mean I had a crush on your girlfriend for years. And out loud was just like. "I just respect him as a player I don't think he's hot." And Seth said "..........ok." Then Jay went home and thought about it longer and also went. Oh. Huh.

Perri- when it comes to their sexuality, Perri has always kind of suspected? They fall a little bit in love with everybody. Especially people who are nice to them. Not in a way where they assume people are flirting. In fact, Perri doesn't think they've ever been flirted with. No way. They're too awkward and weird. (Perri needs better self confidence). But people are just so pretty, and funny and sweet and interesting...and gender has never really been a limiting factor on that. They really figured it out definitively in middle school, though it took them until high school to actually put it into words and tell other people about being queer.

For Nonbinary!Perri, their gender journey was significantly more complicated than figuring out their sexuality. They tried on a couple of different identities and labels throughout their later middle school years. Having Beck as a best friend kind of made them actually think about their gender and how unhappy they were being seen as their assigned gender. They wondered if maybe they were just the opposite gender and were trans, but that made their skin crawl in the same way. They didn't want to be defined as anything, really. Just themself. So eventually they just figured that their gender is as queer as their sexuality and left it at that.

Ravi- okay so. I can't say a lot about Ravi because of spoilers. Which I'm very sorry about. BUT what I can say is that, for a long time, he figured he had to be gay. He had a boyfriend he loved, after all. If he's a guy attracted to other guys, then there isn't really any other option...right? Even if he noticed girls & other people the exact same way as he did most other boys. It wasn't the same as the heart-pounding, life-ending near obsession he felt for the boy he loved.

After his ex died, Ravi settled on the fact that he'd never fall in love again. (The man has a big storm coming). It wasn't until chatting with Jay and Yasmin about their own queerness that he realized that being bisexual was even an option. He felt kind of silly, after that. Of course it was. He quietly adopted the label and went about his day. It isn't like it matters, since he'll never date anyone else ever again ;)

Yasmin- probably had the easiest time of figuring herself out, save for maybe Croft. Yasmin is, if nothing else, deeply self-confident. She understands herself in a way few other people really do. She's known since she was little that she liked girls as well as boys. She has a distinct memory of telling her parents that she was going to marry Princess Jasmin someday. Her parents acted weridly concerned, until Yasmin clarified that it meant she'd have a pet tiger. They didn't realize that the 'marry a princess' part was just as important as the 'pet tiger' part.

As she grew older she understood that her attraction wasn't really limited to gender...but she still assumed she'd probably marry a man. It's still Easthaven, after all. Plus her parents weren't...the most accepting people in the world.

If Jay is a woman they had their 'friendship', and it made Yasmin blush and her heart beat faster, but she never really thought much of it. Yas is much more comfortable in her sexuality now--in the sense that she's not afraid of what the town would think if she dated a woman or nonbinary person--but...she's in a similar boat as Ravi. Never gonna have another long-term relationship, so it isn't really an issue? At least, that's what she thinks ;)
