seeing that post again about the slew of transphobic bills filed for the upcoming tx lege session + watching the texas medical association lgbtq section group chat get angry and sad about these bills has me feeling a certain way... they say that you're supposed to focus on why you wanted to be a doctor whenever you're struggling with the harsh conditions of med school and residency and like. kinda hard to do that when the reason i wanted to be a doctor is probably going to be illegal before i even finish residency

I'm assuming that Texas will go Trump in 2020, unfortunately. But I think it'll be close, like the closest Texas presidential election since 1976. Just postulating, what can Biden optimistically expect to do in Texas in November?
Biden's polling around -4% in Texas which isn't that bad (for the record, Bernie was -2% in that same poll mostly due to his better numbers young and Latino voters, but that doesn't matter anymore now does it), but there's totally a way to swing that even closer if not win but it might mean sacrificing time in Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania which I don't think Biden's team will do.
Assuming he doesn't win
a Democrat winning the Senate seat over Cornyn. Seeing as the Democratic primary runoff is between two Centrists, either winning is a big boon for Biden's agenda
Picking up some House seats. TX 7, 21, 23, 24, 31 come to mind. 23 especially, Will Hurd (who is retiring) won that seat by 926 votes of the 200,000 cast. Biden can claim coattails since those seats weren't carried by Dems in 2018.
Flipping the Texas House, you only have to flip 9 of the Republican's 83 to get the majority, and exactly 9 Republicans are in seats won by Beto in 2018. If they do that Texas isn't a trifecta (so it won't look like Texas the Republican stronghold northerns think it is) and most importantly the Texas Lege is in charge of redistricting so controlling one chamber means one step towards unfucking the gerrymandered mess that is Texas.
Very few of wins coming from progressives, more from Centrists, in Texas and otherwise. If Progressives can win (or overperform Biden) and start building power within institutions and a larger caucus, that undercuts Biden and the DNC's "moderates-only win" strategy.
For example if Donna Imam or Christine Mann (both progressives currently in a runoff, full disclosure this is my home district) win in TX-31 but Biden loses here, then Progressives get a huge victory not just in getting another member into Congress, but doing so over Biden. By the way, this is totally plausible, Williamson county which TX-31 mostly encompasses voted for Bernie in the Primary. Same with Kara Eastman in Kansas.
But if Progressives underperform Biden, then his message of "progressives can't win" solidifies and the Democrats will go back to Hippie-Punching instead of at most tolerating progressives in their party.
Besides that, I'm not really sure. US Senate is the real big State-wide race, Dan Patrick and Ken Paxton are safe (for now). So Centrist Democrats carrying as many down-ballot races as possible is a great outcome for Biden. Republicans winning is bad for him. Progressives winning and/or overperforming his is potentially worse (for him, I'd be delighted with this one) for his messaging and his "be a bridge to Pete Buttigieg" campaign theory.

Pre-filing has begun for the 88th Texas Legislature, which convenes in January, and there are 11 bills pertaining to abortion so far, most seeking to mitigate the damage done by the state’s abortion ban and the Dobbs ruling. The link above ^ should refresh as new bills are filed -- these are the ones listed as of Tuesday morning, November 15th.
Yes:
HB 27, from Austin-area Democrat Rep. Vikki Goodwin, protects employers who offer abortion support benefits to employees
SB 78, from Dallas Democrat Sen. Nathan Johnson, would allow the prescription of medication abortion care, superseding any other laws/ordinances that prohibit the provision of care.
SB 79, also from Sen. Johnson, would deauthorize criminal, civil, and/or administrative penalties or liabilities for people who get abortions. (State law already technically prohibits this, but that doesn’t stop prosecutors from trying it, anyway. I’m assuming this would strengthen that provision.)
SB 122, from Senate Democrats Alvarado, Blanco, Eckhardt, Gutierrez, Menéndez, Miles, West, and Whitmire, would make it somewhat easier for a person who’s been sexually assaulted to seek a clinical abortion in Texas/for a provider to offer such care, by stripping requirements that pregnant folks engage with law enforcement before seeking care.
SB 123, from Senate Democrats Alvarado, Blanco, Eckhardt, Gutierrez, Menéndez, Miles, West, and Whitmire, would somewhat lift burdens for physicians and providers in Texas when it comes to determining health-related exceptions to the state abortion ban, including putting into statute that a “medical review process” cannot overrule a physician or pregnant person.
SB 203, from Senate Democrats Eckhardt, Alvarado, Gutierrez, and Menéndez, dictates that doctors prioritize a pregnant person’s health and health care decisions, “regardless of whether the treatment poses a risk of injury or death to the fetus.”
SB 227, from Senate Democrats Eckhardt, Alvarado, Gutierrez, Johnson, and Menéndez, repeals Texas’ abortion bans.
SJR 21, from Senate Democrats Eckhardt, Alvarado, Gutierrez, Johnson, and Menéndez, proposes a constitutional amendment securing “the right to personal reproductive autonomy.”
SJR 23, Senate Democrats Eckhardt, Alvarado, Gutierrez, Johnson, and Menéndez, proposes a constitutional amendment “establishing the right to be free from governmental intrusion or interference into an individual’s private life.”
No:
HB 61, from North Texas Republican Candy Noble, which prohibits governmental entities (read: the city of Austin, which lives rent-free in state Republicans’ heads 24/7/365) from offering practical support such as child care, lodging, travel funds, etc., to people seeking abortion care
HB 319, from Harris County Republican Rep. Tom Oliverson, deals with so-called “conscience clauses,” protecting health care providers who don’t want to provide health care to people.
HB 522, from Baytown Republican Briscoe Cain, probably the Lege’s most batshit anti-abortion blowhard, designating June 24th Texas’ “Celebration of Life” day. (Wendy Davis’ famous filibuster was June 25, 2013, I imagine these things are somehow related.)
NOTE: You can make a Texas Lege account and get notified when bills are filed pertaining to whatever subject matter you like -- I highly recommend it.

My top priority in the #Txlege has been to work on government transparency. I believe that Texans have an all-powerful right to know how their money is spent. It is in the best interest of TX to ensure that tax dollars are being used for the purpose that the lege intended. 2 of 6
