Winter Solstice at the Merriwick Inn

It was early evening but the sky was already a velvety black, dotted with brightly shining stars. The snow made sure the night wasn't completely dark though. A few curling trails for smoke headed for the sky lazily from the chimneys of the Merriwick Inn. The Inn itself seemed to wear a hat of glistening snow and each window was dressed with a garland of evergreen. There was a garland over the front door too, illuminated by the lantern hanging beside the door.

In the entrance hall there was a fire blazing in the hearth, another evergreen garland on the mantle above it. Oranges with cloves stuck into them and ribbons tied round them sat nestled amongst the greenery. Several coats already hung from the pegs beside it, with a few pairs of snow boots sat beneath. The wrought iron chandelier hanging from the centre of the ceiling was wrapped in ivy, with white candles shinning bright. There was yet another garland wound round the bannister of the stairs, this one with red berries in, and another over the door way to the dinning hall.

The Dinning hall itself was similarly decorated. Sprigs of fir, holly and ivy could be found above windows, on shelves and on the bar. With the largest garland of all over the mantle of the fireplace so large you could step into it. And in that fireplace the Yule Log burned merrily.

The whole place smelled pleasantly of pine and sweet spices. Several small groups already huddled round tables, chatting, eating and laughing. The sound carried faintly through to the entrance hall.

On hearing the front door open Demelza left Twylla at the bar and headed for the entrance, a tray in hand carrying a cup of hot mulled wine for the new arrival. "Good Yule," she greeted as she approached them.

"Hiya... um... no. Well, not really. As in I'm not a shifter or anything. I'm just friends with them--my best friend lives in the pack house, so I'm there pretty much every day. And I grew up in my dad's pack anyways. He's an alpha back in Atlanta, and... I'm rambling, aren't I?"

"Hello," she gave the other girl a soft smile. "So are you part of the pack then?"

"Riiight..." Darcy replied, doing a slow sort of spin as she took in the entryway a bit more. "And I just have to take the word of the mystical inn's mystical hostess. Definitely feels like I'm dreaming at the very least." Not the least bit because said mystical hostess was also mystically hot... but that wasn't the sort of thing to speak on now. "Definitely stumbled. Still stumbling, I think. You might have to pinch me."

Twylla chuckled a little. "I can assure you that you're still in your realm. I can also promise that nothing you consume here is going to make you grow to the size of the Inn nor shrink to the size of a mouse," she switched the basket to her other hip. "I take it you stumbled upon us rather than intending to visit?"

tiny PLANT fairy people! Whee

when I was in middle school and figuring out what comics I wanted to make (because there was no world in which I chose NOT to make comics) I spent a couple weeks drawing single-panel comics, like the ones in newspapers, about a small Tinkerbell-looking fairy called Twylla. The punchline of every comic was that Twylla had blithely put herself into a situation with catastrophic risk of death, like happily climbing a tall flower in a thunderstorm or pirhouetting into the open jaws of a wolf. What I'm saying is now Twylla can be canon

recent obsession: Perfume reviews for some reason? I recently ordered a cool-sounding sample online, and I've been killing time until it arrives by reading/watching reviews online so now Fragrantica is my best friend (highlights: "doesn't smell like death OR decay" for Lush's Death & Decay; "not as otherworldy as promised" for, I think, Jenny Glow's UFO). Also sketching, and The Guardian's Today In Focus podcast.
