Goodbye to Halos - How Fenic (The Main Protagonist) is Fenic (The Lost Princess)

Ok y’all buckle up because it’s about to be a wild ride.

FIRST OFF: READ GOODBYE TO HALOS. It has incredibly good writing and art and characterization!!! Fenic, the main protag, is a trans lesbian!! The other protags include (but are not limited to) a genderqueer gay lion and a poly wlw! I’ll post a link in the notes so this post shows up in tags, but a search of “Goodbye to Halos” will get you there in the first link!

Ok so I don’t know how to format this so let’s just start from the first hint and go from there.

And one more important note: Current Fenic will be referred to as just Fenic, and her mom will be referred to as The Lost Princess.

HINT ONE: THE MAAVE

So maave’s are, as a refresher, the mark under a Shade’s eye. They are a unifying trait of the shades (Along with horns and magic, but less so as they aren’t retained in children of Shades and Wildren, but I digress). But there are also "no two alike in form and color”, as Enae put it.

Which is WEIRD because 

Yeah. Impossible. UNLESS... THE LOST PRINCESS AND FENIC ARE THE SAME PERSON! And not in an amnesia kinda way, but in a restarting life kinda way. But we’ll get to that. 

Addendum: 

The wording of “you are very, very closely related to The Lost Princess” is weird when Enae already knows that Fenic is the lost princess’s daughter. Also the rest of this page speaks for itself I think. “Lost princess was immortal”, “There’s no other Fenics” (especially Fenics with that maave and other traits like red hair). This establishes that Fenic and the Lost Princess look similar, if not alike/identical. This will be essential in hint three.

HINT TWO: GOD’S BLESSING

So as the fight continues, God Herself literally steps in. Well, an avatar of Her’s, later named a Godeye.

God intercepted the knife from hitting Fenic. I won’t post the entire scene here, but basically God shoots the knife at Enae, wounding her BAD. But as God goes to send another attack, Fenic comes in and stands between the two. And then She freaks out????

Now maybe God isn’t a god, but God is just Her name? Also interesting is how She is the only one to use lower case, and only when She says “I”. But that’s another post, as I digress...

God Herself is asking forgiveness from Fenic? After Fenic asked (with her actions” for God not to attack Enae? Enae later talks about this in the following chapter:

“And that girl... blessed by God, she’s the only other one who can sway Her heart. Fenic...”

And who else was blessed by God? The Lost Princess. Before this, Fenic has had no reason to be blessed by god besides being related to the (immortal, may i remind you) lost princess who "died” before Fenic can remember. 

(Also another digression... the only other one? Who is the one Fenic is the “other one” off of? Maybe The Dead Princess? Maybe the old empress? Both are dead, but it’s phrased that she’s one of two, and coming off this theory, perhaps she and The Dead Princess pair up to be the two that can sway God’s heart.)

HINT THREE: ASHER AND TAHMONAI

So their meeting has a ton of different sentences that lead towards this theory, so I’m just going to group them all here. (Note: Enae is narrating and Asher and Tahmonai are talking about The Lost Princess. Tahmonai morphed to The Lost Princess to ask if Asher has seen her.)

“The person you’re looking for... she doesn’t exist anymore” and “That, too was-- somehow -- not true” and “[The Lost Princess] is really immortal too”... these statements don’t have a lot of intersections in the venn diagram of where they can all be true. The only fact that I can think of that does make them true is that Fenic is the rebirth of The Lost Princess. Continuing onto the next page...

There’s a lot to break down here:

“She... was a dear friend of mine.” Meaning The Lost Princess was a friend, not a romantic interest with whom he would have a child with.

“Someone I was lucky enough to know all my life, even if she only knew me for a fraction of her’s.” Implying that The Lost Princess was MUCH older than Asher. Immortality, anyone?

“But there are... circumstances now. Nothing will come of this, Tahmonai.” If this theory is true, then those circumstances are that The Lost Princess doesn’t have her memories, she restarted her life. She isn’t the same person. It clicks.

“Stay in my office. I’ll make arrangements.” Implying he is going to see The Lost Princess to arrange a sort of meeting. But instead he goes to Fenic to send her through the portal. Funny writing there, don’t you think?

After Asher sends Fenic through the portal...

“Did I do the right thing, old friend...?” The name “old friend” is being used here to denote he’s talking about The Lost Princess. Perhaps where she/her reborn self just went through the portal?

“I have to believe this is what you wanted.” (The word “wanted” can be seen if you zoom in close, at least at full resolution). Keyword: “this”. Not “that”. “This” means something that is near, something that was just there. Why would he use “this” for something from someone who is dead? No, what if she, or a version of herself, was just there? And what exactly she, The Lost Princess, wanted? We’ll get to that in hint five.

TO THE NEXT PAGE!

PROBABLY THE HEAVIEST PAGE OF THEM ALL

“I already told you the person you’re looking for doesn’t exist anymore.” Not died, “doesn’t exist anymore.” Specific choice of words!

“Not in a way that’s useful to you.” As in she no longer has her memories, perhaps? That she’s currently a 15 year old? 

“And before she left, she told me...” Before she LEFT. Not died! LEFT!

“That she didn’t want her past to haunt her anymore.” THIS WILL BE IMPORTANT IN HINT FIVE.

“She started over.” BAM. PROBABLY THE CORNERSTONE OF THIS THEORY. Combine these three words with the rest of the theory, and you get the conclusion that “starting over” means something along the lines of reincarnation. But I’ll get to the reincarnation bit later. 

SO THATS ALL UP TO WHERE THE COMIC IS RIGHT NOW! BUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE REREAD?

HINT FOUR: FENIC AS A NAME

Now this one is a little shorter but in the prologue we see Fenic name herself for the first time.

After being called a lady, she sorta panics as, like, what’s she gonna do, give her a boy’s name when she’s a girl and just been called that? And her first instinct is to go with her mother’s name. Like, sure, maybe it’s because she think’s “girl’s name go” and the girl/woman/female closest to her is her mom. But I like to think it’s an instinct to keep the same name. It could be read either way, but I feel like it was worth mentioning. 

ALONG WITH A BONUS THEORY. The Lost Princess is trans. I’ve been thinking about how The Lost Princess would restart, and seeing how the maave is the same, the body is likely the same as well, implying a restart like that of a phoenix. Sorta. Meaning that the AGAB is the same. Maybe Asher didn’t know if restarting life would retain trans-ness or w/e OR he didn’t know The Lost Princess was trans. Either way he went with AGAB, clearly. I like to think that The Lost Princess spent a lot of time thinking about her name so it’s really ingrained in her so that it’s an instinct to be called Fenic :]

HINT FIVE: WHY?

So. That mystery chapter huh? Here’s a proposal- who we see is The Lost Princess.

Think about it, the person we see doesn’t have horns or some sort of tail or animal ears, eliminating someone who is purely Shade or Wildren. This leaves Fenic, The Dead Princess, or The Lost Princess, all born of both species. The hair doesn’t match The Dead Princess’s hair, so that eliminates her. 

This leaves the Fenics, whose hair DO match, assuming The Lost Princess and Fenic have the same hair texture, which in the frame of what has been discussed, it does. 

NOW THIS PAGE

Feels like a reason to be reborn to me.

Granted, this chapter, LITERALLY TITLED “premonition” and the names at the beginning could EASILY be shortened for Clairissa and Enae, who would’ve been only babies or unborn when The Lost Princess was around. This is VERY likely in the future, with Fenic. But I only realized this after I started referring to it earlier in the post, so no going back. 

But maybe it’s salvageable. Maybe Fenic is having the same thoughts as The Lost Princess. The Lost Princess, as stated in hint three, didn’t want the past to haunt her anymore. So she chose to forget in a new life, reborn. 

Maybe Fenic is thinking about following in her mother’s footsteps.

This premonition chapter, along with the whole other conspiracy board of “What’s up with Salin (The Dead Princess) and Tahmonai?”, have me very concerned for the future. 

Afterword

Thank you so much for getting this far ;w; I hope and pray that I made literally any sense. As I was collecting pages to put in here, I noticed that this is quite a common theory if the comment section of the pages is anything to go by. I thought so too before all this, so I didn’t really want to put the effort into a post, but Virgo encouraged me to make it anyway sooooo 

Either way, this can still work as a collection of evidence, and an archive on our, or at least my, thoughts on “What’s up with the Fenics” question! Hopefully later down the line we can look at this and be like, “called it!” or, “honey, you’ve got a big storm coming.” 

I could go on about the implications of this theory, but that’s another post of this length tbhhhhhhhhh and also its uh. 12am LOL.

(Part One) I have a dilemma. Almost every character in my WIP is disabled, queer, a POC, or all of the above. It’s also an intense contemporary fantasy with lots of danger, where some deaths ARE necessary to the plot. Of the two characters I know are going to die, both are disabled and queer, and one is a trans POC. I know how important it is to not kill your gays, but here’s the thing—

(Part Two) Of my four viewpoint protags, two are POC, three are queer, and three are disabled. None of them die. Am I still on shaky ground with killing the other characters? I don’t want to take out the representation just for the sake of not killing minority characters. They’re ALL minority characters in some way. I appreciate your thoughts, but if you think there’s someone better equipped to help with my question, could you tag them? Thank you, it would mean a lot.

Hi anon, I may not be the most qualified person to answer your questions, but to rehash some other things I’ve seen on this topic: 

Character death is a part of some stories. Thematically, realistically, in every way it can be and sometimes is very important. If the story calls for a character to die, then the story calls for it. 

Which means that if you want to genuinely provide non-tokenistic representation, occasionally you’re going to have a character from a minority group that dies.

From what I understand, the danger in the “bury your gays” trope and other similar harmful tropes is when 

1) the ONLY representation for a group among your characters is killed off, or 

2) minority characters are used as cannon fodder while the white, cishet mains survive. 

For example, in a story where you had four canon couples, one of which was a lesbian couple, and you killed one of the lesbians while the three straight couples got to live, that’s Bury Your Gays. Why, your audience wonders, do the straight people get to have happy endings, and the lesbian relationship has to end in pain and death? This is an especially pertinent question because for decades, rules governing “morality” and “decency” on TV forbade the portrayal of non-straight relationships--unless the relationship had a horrible tragic ending, because in that case the story would “show” that non-straight relationships were bad. So for decades, the only stories LGBT+ people got to see on TV about people like them had to end badly. That’s why creators now are so careful about killing off LGBT+ characters. 

But that doesn’t mean that any LGBT+ character is exempt from death, or that any minority character is. The thing about tropes like “bury your gays” is that they are not necessarily inherently bad, but oversaturated and afflicted with really bad historical context. Tragedy is a valid and very old genre of story, and in an ideal world stories would represent gay characters because gay people exist in real life. Without any homophobic bias at all affecting society, some stories with gay characters would be tragic or sad. The problem is that for a long time, stories with gay characters were only tragic and sad, while stories where straight people got happy endings were everywhere, and we still haven’t evened things out yet. 

Some stories are going to need character death. The problem, the way I understand it, is when you write only (or mostly) tragic, ugly endings for your minority characters and don’t also have happy endings. Or, if you consistently let your white, cishet characters survive but treat minority characters as more expendable. This overlaps with the problem of under-representing characters. If you have a single non-cishet character in your story, and you kill them, that’s the only representation some of your audience will have! And if you let all the straight people live, well, that just makes it seem like you have a bias. 

What you’re describing is a very diverse cast with all types of characters. Killing one of those characters off won’t destroy the only representation your readers have, nor will it highlight minority characters unnecessarily. Your alternatives are to change the characters who get killed so they don’t belong to any minority groups, which I think is being unfaithful to the characters, or not killing anybody, which from what I’m hearing is not what the story calls for and would come off as artificial. 

Guidelines like “avoid killing off minority characters” are ways of getting to where we want to be (a world where stories equally represent people). A world where that was realized would have to have deaths of minority characters sometimes, because minority characters would be numerous and in all types of books, and avoiding stories where it was necessary would require some very contrived stories. If someone wrote a story about warring kings on a fantasy continent and almost all the characters were dark-skinned and sometimes kings married princes to solidify alliances, you couldn’t just avoid killing anyone we’d think of as a “minority” because hell, there are dragons and assassins and the reader signed up for a gritty, bloody tale. But those characters wouldn’t be the sole representation in the whole book either. If your fantasy novel has 10 white guys and one black guy and the black guy dies, that’s a problem. If your fantasy novel has 3 white guys and 8 black guys and a black guy dies, well, that’s just fantasy. There are dragons breathing fire and shit happens.  

Additionally, if your readers are picking out this story and going into it expecting it to be a dark story, character death will probably be expected as par for the course. We need fluffy gay rom-coms, but not every story is one, and that’s okay! 

This ended up longer than i meant it to be because right now is what is usually my Writing Time and I feel like word-vomiting I guess. But yeah! You can think as carefully as you want about this and decide how you feel about it. Are you killing off the sole representation of anything? and Do you tend to prioritize the happy endings of non-minority characters over everyone else? are the things I would think about. But my personal feelings on the subject are that you need to do what the story calls for. To my mind, an important part of representation is writing GOOD stories that include it, and to do that you have to be true to what the story needs. 

It’s your choice in the end. I fret and worry about these things too, but I have to remind myself that all I can do is my best and even then it will be impossible to please everyone. Not even God can do that.

hiya so ain’t a normal post for this blog, think of it like a youtube video but text (i’d make this a video but i don’t have a good mic & idk how to edit), anyways this is a start to a series of posts i’ll sometimes make, the point of this series is to point some fandoms at other pieces of work like the thing that fandom likes, so like in this post i’ll talk about other pieces of work that homestuck fans might like

anyways most of the post is under the cut cause it might be a long but i’ll show the 1st 2 that way you can see if you like my reasoning, also i haven’t seen every piece of media ever so i might miss some things so feel to add in a reblog

(also the numbers i use aren’t to show the quality, it’s just what came to mind 1st)

1: borderlands

ok tbh this game is why i made this post, this game series has a lot of the same kinds of humour (though borderlands doesn’t to what i can recall have any ablest jokes or the stuff like that), it’s a very fun game  series even for those who most of the time don’t like shooters as it’s kinda like what would happen if overwatch’s fun shooting mechanics had a baby with diablo 2‘s skill trees

the story is really great, taking a lot of cues(and names) from greek legends, also a hot tip, you really don’t need to play the 1st game, just start at borderlands 2 then go to pre sequel and then tales from the borderlands and you should be fine

also there are quite a few lgbtq+ characters (including a canon lesbian relationship that can end in marriage, i say can as it’s a part of a game where what you say and do can have things end in other ways), and there is also a lot of room for oc making as it takes place in it;s very own world that has a lot of things no other story really has

2: Undertale/Deltarune

ok you most likely know about at least Undertale but hey this is my post and i get to add what i want. anyways Undertale’s story is this: once a upon a time monsters and humans both lived above the ground but one day a war started, humans with their determination sealed the monsters deep beneath Mount Ebott, creating a barrier only a human soul could pass, one day a child climbs Mount Ebott and falls into the undergrond, the way this tale ends is up to the player

ok so there are quite a few characters that you get to know well, they all have backstorys that are quite the tales, there is canon lgbtq+ characters (including a canon relationship with two of the woman characters, a non binary protag and trans coded characters),

it’s also a very funny game and the story is one of the best story's i’ve ever heard, also if you like the music of homestuck then you’re gonna love this game’s music as it was made by toby fox (some of his songs from homestuck are: Black, Descend, Savior of the Waking World, MeGaLoVania, ect)

now Deltarune isn’t a full game yet and only chapter 1 is out rn but if you’ve already played Undertale then give this a go

3: My Hero Academia

ok so a lot of you already know about this anime but i still feel i should about it. So the show’s plot is about a world where most people have superpowers called Quirks, the main character (named Izuku Midoriya) has the dream of be coming a superhero like his role model All Might but he has a problem: he was born without a Quirk, the show has him slowly learn how to be a hero, make new friends and fight evil

there are a lot of characters so if you liked the bigger cast size of homestuck then this will be great. the fights are very well done and the super powers are well done, there is also a lot of room to make oc’s so if you liked making oc’s this show should be great for you

4: danganronpa

did you like the murder in homestuck? wish there was more and it was somehow more nuts? well then these games (plus anime and book or two) are for you!

the 1st game story is this: you are Makoto Naegi, a student of Hope's Peak Academy, who finds himself trapped in a game of mutual killing among his peers, in Hope's Peak Academy everyone is some kind of Ultimate (of skills or things like being a robot), Makoto Naegi is the Ultimate Lucky Student witch is a Ultimate given out in a lottery

the games have a lot of unique characters and a story about as messed up as homestuck, there are also canon lgbtq+ characters but for the most part most are only coded (and the ones that are canon don’t uh really get any happy endings), also due the whole Ultimate thing there’s a lot of room for oc making

5: steven universe

so i’m sure most of you have heard of this but it’s really good so it’s worth sharing, here’s the plot: The Crystal Gems are a team of magical beings who are the self-appointed guardians of the universe. Half-human, half-Gem hero Steven is the "little brother" of the group. The goofball is learning to save the world using the magical powers that come from his bellybutton and he goes on magical adventures with the rest of the Crystal Gems, even though he's not as powerful -- or smart -- as fellow group members Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl. Despite his shortcomings, Steven usually finds a surprising way to save the day.

this show has so many lgbtq+ characters that if i tried i wouldn’t be able to list them all, there is so much room to make oc’s if you can think of a type of gem then you got a gemsona idea buddy cuz any gem can be a character and the story is really great

6: the adventure zone

ok so this one is a tabletop rpg podcast, so far there has been two main campaigns though one is still on going, the 1st one is called The Balance Arc it’s the campaign that was for d&d and so far is the only main campaign to be over as it has a ending (though they sometimes still do live shows set in the campaign), it’s also the one you should must likely start with, then the  2nd main campaign is called: Amnesty it uses the monster of the week rpg and is on going, this podcast is hosted by the McElroys

another d&d show! yeah i know but this one and the last one are very very different, for one everyone in this show knows how to play d&d, anyways this is a web series in which a group of professional voice actors play Dungeons & Dragons, that is played live every Thursday. There are two campaigns, one of them is over while the other is on going, both are already very long so you better have some free time on your hands

if you do watch then be ready to cry at least once

ok so uh this one is a bit odd, it’s on the shorter side os things and is a serialized speculative fiction multimedia narrative by Jon Bois published online through SB Nation, it’s odd but from what i know it’s good

9: paranatural

a webcomic that is made by the same person that made summerteen romance (y’know from Paradox Space?) anyways the comic follows the story of Max, the new kid at school, and the other members of the Activity Club as they fight ghosts, investigate the secrets of Mayview, and interact with their fellow middle school students

it’s a fun webcomic that has characters that you end up really wanting to learn more about

10: young justice

so this show is a pertty good way to get into the dc fandom, you don’t need to know much of the lore of the main dc verse as a lot of the stuff isn’t quite the same in the show so need to worry if your not the must into comics, the story is about the the teenage team of superheroes as they save the world as well as deal with normal daily life issues

it’s a fun show that can make you cry really fast, that goes from light hearted to dark very quick and isn’t afraid to kill off a characters

novels

the coldest girl in coldtown by holly black - vampires! a trans character! a bi character! one of the most novel approaches to vampires in fiction that i’ve seen! 10/10 would recommend

the darkest part of the forest by holly black - again, holly black is one of my favorite authors. this one’s got faeries (the proper vaguely unsettling kind that i’m all about) magical music, girls embracing their sexuality, girls being knights, interesting sibling dynamics, and a super cute m/m pairing

les miserables by victor hugo - ok yeah, it’s like 1400 pages long and historical fiction, but i love les mis a lot ok. it’s gotta be on this list just because it owns my ass. it’s like a old drunk french man trying to tell you about the june rebellion but he keeps getting distracted by things like people’s personal lives, the intricacies of the parisian underworld, and how much he wants to fuck the sewers. it’s wonderful

the night circus by erin morgenstern - magical circus that mysteriously appears for days at a time and then vanishes? a competition between young magicians drawn out for years? a wide variety of fascinating side characters? (i will say that the synopsis available for the book is somewhat misleading, as it’s actually less about our two protags and more about the circus itself. but that’s what makes it so enchanting)

the song of achilles by madeleine miller - retelling of patroclus and achilles story to be explicitly romantic. will make you feel like you’re floating on clouds and then rapidly crush your soul. sort of a happy ending? but it’s still a tragedy. their ending is the same as it was in the illiad so if you’re not prepared for that then maybe don’t read

good omens by neil gaiman and terry pratchett - a demon who’s not very good at being a demon and an angel who just wants to collect his books in peace thank you very much try to sabotage the end of times. absolutely hilarious

fairy and folktales of the irish peasantry by w.b. yeats - the best collection of irish faerie stories by one of my favorite poets. if you like creepy and tricky faeries i would def recommend checking these out

rootabaga stories by carl sandburg - another collection of folktales, this time inspired by the american midwest. kinda weird, kinda zany, very neat

the poison eaters by holly black - a short story collection of faery stories that are sometimes creepy, sometimes touching, sometimes gay. my personal favorite is about a library science student who finds a book collection where the characters come out at night and interact, but they’re all really great

series:

alex rider adventures by anthony horowitz - teenager gets recruited by MI6 as a spy, has incredibly high success rate, gets pretty fucked up along the way but damn those one liners tho, maybe have some self preservation alex? just a thought

all for the game by nora sakavic - about a fake sport called exy that’s kind of like indoor lacrosse but more violent. contains: crime families, found families, an aspec protag, girls kicking ass, unhealthy levels of sass, wonderful slowburn m/m that you can’t even see coming for a long while, and a happy ending for everyone!! i came for the gays and ended up reading all three books in two days. also you can get the whole series for less than five bucks on kindle! (note: tw for rape, physical abuse, torture, ptsd, child abuse, drug use, alcoholism, some use of slurs, mentions of past self harm, mental illness)

artemis fowl by eoin colfer - more faeries, but this time they live underground and are way more technologically advanced than humans. the first book focuses on our anti-hero trying to catch one and steal their gold, and they quickly become allies and solve faerie related cases together!! one of my favorite series growing up, and i cried in the middle of the hallway at school when i finished the last book

camp half-blood series by rick riordan - does rick riordan write a lot of mythology books? yes. do i love them all? yes. neurodivergent kids! kids from a huge range of racial and ethnic backgrounds! queer kids! collect them all! ft. greco-roman mythology and a lot of stupid jokes

emelan series by tamora pierce - ok this is easily one of my favorite series of all time. non-western high fantasy setting (picture greece/turkey, china, tibet, mongolia, scandinavia, etc type settings), following four young mages who have unique kinds of magic as they train and grow their skills and become powerful in their own right. only one of the kids is definitely white (jury’s still out on sandry), one is a lesbian, one is ace, one is pan, all four are raised by a loving f/f couple, body diversity, one of the best found families i’ve ever read, feminism, discussion of racism, classism, cultural identity, war, and so much more. it’s so so good and so under-appreciated please read all of the emelan books 

the dark is rising sequence by susan cooper - full disclosure i have not finished this series yet but i’ve re-read the first book a million times. it’s a neat take on arthurian mythology, with dark forces trying to take over and kids getting shit done

diviners by libba bray - psychic teenagers in 1920s new york! i’m a slut for prohibition, but these are also super fun and have likable and real characters, and doesn’t only focus on wealthy white people having parties which is nice. the occult! government conspiracies! historical references! genuinely scary situations! it’s rad!

the enchanted forest chronicles by patricia c. wrede - i adore this series so so much. it’s about a princess who’s father keeps telling her that she can’t have hobbies like fencing or cooking or conjugating latin verbs because they’re unladylike and insists that she marry this doofus prince that she couldn’t care less about. so she runs away and volunteers to work for a dragon and proceeds to send away all the princes that try to rescue her. it’s genuinely funny, has a really neat magic system in the later books, great female friendships, cats, dragons who have no time for your gender roles, and wizards who are the most ridiculous group of antagonists you will ever see

the infernal devices by cassandra clare - i really really do not like the author of this series but it also broke me so it must go on the list. if you’re familiar with the mortal instruments or shadowhunters on freeform, it’s set in that universe in the 1870s in london and it’s very steampunk and very angsty and it made me cry a lot

the kane chronicles by rick riordan - see: camp half-blood series but egyptian

fablehaven by brandon mull - oooooh fuck me up i love this series. this is another one meant for slightly younger readers but all of brandon mull’s series are so wildly imaginative and i’m a slut for world building so. the premise is basically that there are secret preserves all over the world that house magical creatures, and five of these preserves have vaults with artifacts that when brought together make a key to this massive demon prison. an evil society called the society of the evening star is trying to get the artifacts to open the prison, and a different group who is allied with the preserves called the knights of the dawn is trying to get to them first to prevent this from happening. there are dragons, light and dark powers, crazy convoluted vaults to get through, and some really cool creatures and characters

beyonders by brandon mull - this guy again! this one’s about a parallel world called lyrian that people on earth can only get to through small liminal windows, and usually can’t get back through. the story follows two kids, jason and rachel, who get stuck in lyrian and end up becoming major members of the resistance against the evil emperor maldor. just like fablehaven, the world building is insane and you’ll fall in love with all the characters. this is yet another series that made me cry in the middle of class when i finished it

the kingkiller chronicle by patrick rothfuss - this is series is long as all fuck and the last book isn’t out yet but it’s my #1 favorite series of all time. i found out about it bc a cashier at a local grocery store held up the line to write it down for me and i never went back. parts of it are achingly, hauntingly beautiful, other parts are hilarious enough to leave you in stitches, others make you want to pull your hair out. there’s sass, recklessness, beautiful and deadly girls, an overwhelming love and emphasis on the importance of music and storytelling, magic that’s more like science, ethnic adversity, student loans, a thing that might be a cow or might be a dragon depending on who you ask, and more quotable lines than you could dream of. the audiobook by nick podehl is also fabulous, and lin manuel miranda is producing and adapting it for the screen and maybe stage at some point in the future!

a modern faerie tale by holly black - guys. i love holly black. almost everything she’s ever written is on this list. this one is fairly self explanatory by the title, but it’s gritty and dark and has those lovely creepy faeries that she’s so great at writing. also a surprising m/m couple in the last book, both of whom are characters in the other two installments. (tw for drug use/addiction, brief sexual assault, and probably other things that i can’t remember right now)

the raven cycle by maggie stiefvater - also in my top 3 favorite series of all time, i cannot begin to describe this series. i first read it while up in the nc mountains which improved the experience to a surprising degree, but it’s stuck with me for the last several years. basically 5 teenagers go in search of a dead welsh king, but along the way there is magic, psychics, ghosts, a sentient forest, dreams becoming reality, curses, teenage shenanigans, classic cars, swearing, church, kisses and not kisses, illict hand holding, a baby crow, bisexuality, a death list, hitmen, and nicknames and it will consume your heart before you know what’s happening to you (tw child abuse, implied sexual assault, substance abuse, dissociation, mentions of past suicide attempts, body horror, gore, and disturbing scenes esp. in the last book)

six of crows by leigh bardugo - a team of criminals band together to break into an impossible fortress, fall in love, con an entire city, and get rich. set in the same universe as the grisha trilogy (which is also good but not as good as soc), this is basically a heist followed by a con, but pulled off by ruthless teenagers and with the help of magic

curseworker trilogy by holly black - crime families, magic that can only done through touch so everyone wears gloves, moral ambiguity, and a twisted romance. one of holly black’s best and most underrated series

baccano! by ryohgo narita - this is a japanese light novel series which has been adapted into an anime, but is much more extensive in print. the plot is extremely convoluted, but an absolute ride spanning several centuries, although the bulk of it is in the 1930s in nyc and chicago. there’s an elixir of immortality, crime families, trains, a solipsistic assassin and his mute assassin gf, serial killers, a demon with a catch phrase, murder, explosions, adorable couples, gambling, a gang leader named jacuzzi who is always terrified, killer corporations, and much much more

no.6 by asuka asano - another japanse series, this time focusing on two boys, one who grew up in a utopian city, the other who grew up outside the walls after the city destroyed his life. they meet when they’re 12 years old, and several years later, they’re reunited when the outsider rescues the city boy from arrest. they, along with a pimp and a nonbinary dog hotel owner, try to expose and overthrow the government. also ft. drag performances, mice who like shakespeare, killer bees, and boys falling in love.

the merlin saga by t.a. barron - my favorite take on arthurian mythology, chronicling merlin as he comes into his power. there’s a vividly magical island, giants, amulets, talking trees, stones that will try to swallow you, a swamp witch, celtic deities, huge wicker hats, poetry, new kinds of fruit, people that are also deer, and human’s long lost wings.

it starts off when the protag evelyn is about 7 i havent decided fully on her age her but shes very young and shes out late watching the sunset at the park, shes approached by another girl her age who turns out to be peggy and they have a short convosation about whether bird are clever or not before evelyn leaves

fast forward a few year to when evelyn is 16 she has a skateboard now and cant do tricks but shes going to try to get these girl on a date somehow, her friend ted (full name teresa) who is 19 and already been and done the impress cute girls thing because she has three girlfriends and ted is trying to save evelyn from embarassment but it doesnt work and evelyn ends up badly hurting her hand which introduces evelyns two other friend max and wolfgang who are both 15 and are dating

wolfgang is from a low income family and works part time when his mother works overseas as his father died at work because he was millitary, max also doesnt have a father but this is because his father wasnt supportive of him being trans so his mother kicked him out max's mother is very ill with a disease that is uncurable but max wants to become a doctor so he can find a cure because max has vague medical knowledge he patches up evelyn's hand and thats the introduction of the main four characters

later evelyn is at home and her adoptive mothers ask her about her bandage before she can answer her little sister, also adopted, paige makes up some cool sounding story about it then the tv shows some brief broadcast about a curfew for all minor due to recent disappearences its later revealed that the disappearences are because of dominique, a celebrity who is also suffering from the disease max's mother has, trying to find a cure by experimenting on kids

evelyn is a very clever person so she doesnt listen to the curfew and sneaks out to fuck around in the woods

as she fucking around in the woods she falls over because shes a fool and it makes her hand start bleeding again, the blood gets on the ground and this opens a portal enter mayen and ven, the two interdimensional lesbians, theyre just as confused as evelyn, because they were expecting to see their good friend cassio whos been missing for years and instead they find a child

evelyns surprisingly chill about this and decides to bring them to teds house which she shares with her brother diego

ted and diego are not as chill with interdimensional beings as evelyn and teh freak out this alerts authorities and everything goes to hell and at some point the interdimensional clown (cleophos) and the interdimensional asshole (androme) show up somehow this big stand off between what could be gods for all anyone knows and the police last until morning and everyone in the town knows about

people try to contact out of town people but no one can get through this is dominiques doing

evelyn gets bback home with ven but no one else, because ven is too frightened to explain themself, evelyns mothers arent cool with this either but the dog, thor, gets very angry at loud noises so they dont cause a fuse

ven becomes captain plot device and explains the interdimensional mother, cassio, during this she mentions that cassio was on this realm of existence to study humans and befriended an astronomer, evelyn points out that her deceased biological father was astronomer and a moment of realisation happens

during this paige goes to school but doesnt come back and thor runs away and is found run over dead in front of a old but friendly looking house the next day

dominique, using her celebrity status as a power module makes a random and unprovoked statement about the interdimensional beings (which by now have revealed that their called novadeodes) and androme fights back and its like if glados had a twin that she hated and they were fighting over cake

during this evelyn, ted, max, wolfgang, ven and mayen are looking for paige, diego is good at hacking so hes trying to trace her whereabout via ctv

they walk past the house that thor died ifront of and mayen and ven say hey whys there a ton of living people under there everyone is very confused but they sorta move on, meanwhile cleophos has found adelaide studying his message thing that says whats currently happening right now, but he cant read his hand writing and brushes it off, evelyn comes by at the end of teh story and manages to read it and everyone calls out cleophos for eing a clown

heading back home, the group stops by a baking because ted needs more bread, here evelyn finally manages to convince a girl to go on a date with her disaster bisexual ass teh girl is asya

back at ted and diego's house teds girlfriends are there and diegos find out th house where ven and mayen said the thing at is dominiques house and everyones like huh weird because theyre idiots

evelyn goes on the date with asya and its good except for evelyn being terrified for paige's safety

dominique gets suspicious of evelyn hanging out with novadeodes and being round her house cause dominique kidnaps and is doing the evil illegal experiements thing on paige and its revealed here that teh cure isnt for dominique its for her daughter peggy

androme continues to be glados to everyone and gets forcefully sent back to the other dimension by everyone because no ones likes her

dominique tries to get evelyn at her house so she can either scare her away or kidnap her too, evelyn brings all her friends so instead dominique just shows her video of paige dying

evelyn has to have her 5'4 ass held back by all present novadeodes and ted (who is 7'1) to stop her from murdering dominique right here right now

peggy shows up from the first time since the being cause shes not only cured as a result of the experiment evelyn's like 50% novadeode energy passed into paige and like all her other family and friends due to exposure and made peggy like fucking super strong you know as you do

peggy tries to be friends to everyone but like her mothers a mass murderer shes in no place to be making friends especially not evelyn who she explictly says you know its a shame your sisters dead but remember when we were like 7 and i had one interaction with you that was the only positive interaction ive ever had so we legally have to date and everyone doesnt know whether to by outraged by the statement or dominiques parenting

peggy leaves and everyone leads evelyn outside so she can do overdramatic sadness meanwhile ven fucking snaps and straight up murders dominique but its off screen to piss people off

peggy's now also pissed so at some point she and evelyn have a massive fight in the woods and evelyn tries to ask peggy out in it because shes panicking because shes literally never been in a fight before and this is a deathmatch and she doesnt know what to do peggy's too pissed and its oh boy how the tables have turned

peggy ends up dying because somehow evelyn manages to do novadeode stuff and evelyn tries to make her last moments nice

evelyn returns to society where somehow ven has convinced everyone the novadeodes are good and not a problem, evelyn doenst know how cause she cant convince her mothers to let her have a day off school for anything but its ok and she goes on another date with asya as a closer

Tsugumi Hazawa/Sayo Hikawa 

I love this ship - I really suggest reading their first interactions in this event to get a feel for how they interact, if you have only had access to the English version. I’d especially love an internal look at Tsugumi’s feelings if it’s fic, and a cute shared moment with sweets for art. 

Kaoru Seta/Kokoro Tsurumaki and Kaoru Seta/Hagumi Kitazawa/Kokoro Tsurumaki

So here's the thing - Kaoru and Kokoro talk past each other constantly and I actually LOVE that. I think it's made even better by having Hagumi as a mediator (Hagumi is stupid but she's not as stupid as Kaoru, and benefits from Kokoro's weird brand of emotional intelligence.)

I want to see them having madcap adventures, buffeted to ever greater heights of idiocy, but also tenderness too. Let them get a little closer than they do as co-buffoons!

Kaoru Seta/Himari Uehara/Rimi Ushigome

While it's super cute that both Rimi and Himari are head over heels for Kaoru I would love it if she got flustered by both of their attention too!

Kaoru Seta/Maya Yamato

It might be a little unorthodox to request a non-romantic cameo but I would LOVE to see Chisato's reaction to this. I like that Maya doesn't fall victim to Kaoru's ridiculousness (maybe due to overexposure?) and it puts her in a perfect position to make the first move for once.

Kanon Matsubara/Chisato Shirasagi

I like this at its best when it's bittersweet, something that Chisato is clinging to a little too desperately while trying to look like she isn't. A touch or two of sadness goes a long way here with this ship, though of course I love cute fluffiness too.

Misaki Okusawa/Rimi Ushigome

My poor forgotten friendship! How I wish the game would remember that they interact! They're both fans of horror fiction which is ADORABLE. Make use of it!

Aya Maruyama/Maya Yamato

Their names are practically the same it's like fated (no but seriously. I love how Maya is so openly supportive of Maya when others are bringing her down, and how Aya sticks up for Maya and celebrates all her weird little foibles. Cute as heck.)

2. Love Live! Sunshine!! 

Kanan Matsuura/You Watanabe

I like this best post-highschool after both of them have grown up some, but you can feel free to set it when the series happens if you like. I like that they're both silly jocks who love the ocean, so any work focusing on a maritime theme is A+!

Kanan Matsuura/Dia Kurosawa AND Dia Kurosawa/Kanan Matsuura/Mari Ohara

My OT3... My favourite dynamic between them is Kanan and Dia but I do also love when Mari is there to be the shiny, sparkly bond that glues the group together. Super happy to read about fights and disagreements with these three so long as they all make up by the end

I'm really interested in this as a character building piece for both of them; Garnet has to learn to not be such of a pedestal and set boundaries, Peridot has to apologise and keep apologising and also learn to give herself over to the moment more. It's okay if it's just a moment of tenderness between the two of them without anything concrete, but building to a relationship is fine too.

Bismuth/Garnet 

Again, I really want to see them get back up to speed with each other. Something harking back to their past together would be super lovely too!

Bismuth/Pearl

This is a bit more self-indulgent but it would be so nice to see Bismuth help Pearl dress a little more butch, get a little more in touch with that side of herself. I'd love for Pearl to open up more fully to Bismuth and make her feel secure...

My OTP of all OTPs. Anything you could possibly provide to me I will treasure, provided it's SFW (unless it's post canon and they're adults). I want to see them in love but also I love seeing the imbalance in their power explored, Utsutsu's sadness and Hajime's manic happiness, I love everything about them.

While a retrospective on their relationship is exciting, I'd also appreciate just plain old flashback fic exploring how much they meant to each other when they were raising Shirase.

Shirase Kobuchizawa/Hinata Miyake AND Yuzuki Shiraishi/Mari Tamaki AND Shirase Kobuchizawa/Hinata Miyake/Yuzuki Shiraishi/Mari Tamaki

I love all of these dynamics equally and would be super delighted to receive any of them! With Shirase/Hinata I'm all about the difficulty in communication between them, and navigating the gaps. When they can connect it feels like a relief, almost, and I love that. 

Yuzuki and Kimari are much softer and sillier by contrast and lend themselves well to goofy shenanigans, especially because of Yuzuki's sharp tongue. When all four of them are together I like it best as it is in the show, but with more kissing. 

Megumi Takahashi/Mari Tamaki

Oh please kill me with angst for these two I invite it openly (Megu's jealousy is a great resource, but also Kimari's stubbornness to keep loving her - they can make it work if they work hard! I believe in them!)

Yume Sasaki/Honami Yasumoto

I feel like its a given to ask for fanfic where the two of them get absolutely sauced and spill everything about their feelings about each other but can you blame me for wanting that

Gin Toudou/Kanae Maekawa

Would love to see this potentially contrasted with their prior relationship with Takako and how they're picking up the pieces from it.

Natsuo Ishido/Sanae Sawamura

I really love how integral their relationship is to the work without it ever overshadowing everything else; it's very subtle. Well, now I'd like it to take center stage for once. They can kiss while fighting right???

Mai Ganeko/Sanae Sawamura

Mai is such a sycophant, bless her. It would be nice to see Sanae finally validate her a little.

Karin Kotani/Mitsuko Honma

Good old fashioned rivalry with a spark of mutual respect. Imagine if Karin got to win for once? How would they both react?

Mitsuko Honma/Shinobu Kannagi

Really love how thorougly Shinobu knocks Mitsuko off kilter, so making use of that would be super fun (I also love the contrast in their personalities, with Shinobu being a big teddy bear and Mitsuko being a terrifying ice queen)

Karin Kotani/Manami Hiki

Manami is still such a n00b in so many ways and it would be great if she got some special focus from Karin for a change. The dash of hopeless pity just makes it cuter imo.

Kei Ninomiya/Mai Ganeko

I didn't figure anyone else shipped this! I like Kei getting to break away from Natsuo to talk and grow close with other characters (though I'd of course welcome Natsuo's presence in a fic like this). They can bond over being the sidekicks to extremely intense women who hate each other, haha!

Just please... I want to see them solving a mystery together... and Katrielle giving Emiliana a jubilant kiss when they figure it out, and consequently ruining her life

8. Marvel Cinematic Universe

PLEASE THE WHOLE MOVIE I WAS BEGGING THEM TO INTERACT give me anything. I will take literally anything. Space AU. Mafia AU. Bodyguard AU seems too obvious, right? In canon, I'd really appreciate an exploration of what they mean to each other and a way to make it work while keeping both their principles intact.

9. Final Fantasy VIII

Selphie Tilmitt/Selphie's Friend (FF8)

Even as a little kid I felt like this was ripe for potential, especially considering how Zell and other party members conduct their romantic business outside of the main party. I'd love to see her coming back to Trabia after the end of the story and getting to relax with her girlfriend for once. (Name the girlfriend whatever you want, but if it's hard to name her how about Tabitha?)

10. Little Witch Academia

Ursula Callistis | Chariot du Nord/Croix Meridies

I'm obsessed with the idea of Ursula determined to redeem Croix by her own hands even when the rest of the world spurns her (and rightfully so!), so something with comedic potential or a more meaty emotional exploration are both things I'd love to see or read.

Atsuko Kagiri/Sucy Manvaran/Lotte Yanson

I love my silly weird protag trio. I think what I'd most like to see here is how they became a couple and then more than a couple; bonus points for keeping Sucy her malevolent, extremely dangerous self while retaining all that exhausted fondness both she and Lotte have for Akko.
