General Bronze by sculptor, Marisol Escobar, 1997 Bronze Seen at Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey Photo Credit: Alice Lowe Maria Sol Escobar (born May 22, 1930), otherwise known simply as Marisol, is a sculptor born in Paris of Venezuelan lineage, working in New York City. From 1951 to 1954 she took courses at the New School for Social Research while studying under her most influential mentor, the so-called "dean of Abstract Expressionism", Hans Hofmann. At Hofmann’s schools in Greenwich Village and Provincetown, Massachusetts, Marisol became acquainted with notions of the "push and pull" dynamic: of forcing dichotomies between raw and finished states. During this period, Marisol was introduced to New York's Cedar Tavern, the chief watering hole for many of the leading Abstract Expressionists with whom Marisol became friends, particularly Willem de Kooning. Episode 40 Bonus: the life and love of Frida and Diego, the marriage between an elephant and a dove, the fiery, tumultuous, affair-riddled, can’t live with or without you love that puts Carrie and Big’s “inconvenient” and Meredith and Derek’s “save the last piece of cheesecake” love to utter shame. It’s thrilling and informative to watch their relationship evolve through her work and their own public image: this Kahlo wedding canvas, “Frieda and Diego Rivera” (1931, @sfmoma), depicts Kahlo as the teeny-footed wife of the master mural painter, clutching Rivera as he holds the palette and brushes. But slowly you start to see her emerge from his shadow, even when some of her most famous canvases reference him and her heartbreak in one way or another (but what pop star hasn’t gotten famous on his or her own merit doing the same?). What can be said for sure about the “strange fire” between these two crazy kids is how deeply they informed one another’s work and lives, and how, even through a divorce, a remarrying, and her own grim, sickly end, they couldn’t really live without one another—her illness worsened whenever they were estranged; Rivera died only three short years after Kahlo did. . 🔗episode in bio! . #fridakahlo #diegorivera #mexicanart #twentiethcenturyart #weddingportrait #modernart #inconvenientlove #cheesecake #greysanatomy #sexandthecity #podcast #arthistory #arthistorypodcast #thelonelypalette (at SFMOMA San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0Lv9fnF_FD/?igshid=72wbzug726tt

Early twentieth century Western art blows my mind. A few years ago I walked very slowly through the National Gallery of Canada's chronologically organized European art collection, losing myself completely in it for a couple of hours (note: Philip Glass' "Glassworks" is the ultimate album for this). ⠀ .⠀ Finally drifting into the twentieth century, I felt as if I was entering an alien world. The change in the work was jarring. It gave me a very real sense of how shocking the events of the time must have felt: the technological advancements & the promise of a new century alongside the terrifying destruction of total war. For me, the art of the time conveys this so much better than history books ever can. ⠀ .⠀ This piece from 1916 is Jacques Lipchitz' "Seated Figure" (photo by me) and is one of the works that had such an impact on me that day.

Reza Bangiz is a painter and a narrator. He narrates the #myths and stories and creates unique paintings from them. When you look at his paintings you can realize that there is a #story behind them and it is interesting to know that most of his paintings are #mysterious and untitled. He is a technical painter and he uses printing techniques in his artworks. He uses #black in his paintings to show grief and the figures in the paintings can appear unsettling which makes his paintings perfect for this post on #halloween. However, sometimes he tries to use other #colours in order to decrease this sadness in his paintings. A selection of his painting will be present at CAMA Gallery's private #events.
