the bucktommy first kiss was so insane because you can tell what they are thinking after the kiss. yes, buck has his oh! moment and finds out he likes men. but the way tommy takes a little bit longer to open his eyes, like he doesn't wanna know what reality looks like yet, because he also had an oh! moment. that was not just a kiss. buck opened his eyes immediately because he was excited, but tommy just kissed the love of his life, and he doesn't want to open his eyes and find out he was the only one feeling like his world just tuned upside down.
anyway... i miss them

Time in a Bottle
chapter 7
“What did you want from us?” Buck asked, his head resting on Tommy's shoulder.
“Can't we just dance, Evan? No questions this time.”
Buck turned his head, pressing a kiss against Tommy's neck. “You're the one asking. Do you even know what you wanted?”
“It doesn't matter now.”
“I think it does.”
Tommy sighed, but wrapped Buck up tighter in his arms. “I wanted... I wanted everything.”
“Then why'd you leave?”
“Because I'm not sure you understand what everything means. Six months. We'd never even fought. I don't... I don't even know if you loved me. I don't think you knew if you loved me.”

After the hospital-wedding
“Come on, I’ll drive you home,” Buck offers once Tommy finishes his cake.
But Tommy is already shaking his head. “You don’t have to do that, I’ll just call an Uber.”
Buck raises an eyebrow and looks Tommy up and down, from his muddy boots to his soot-covered turn-outs. For some reason it looks good on him.
“That bad?” Tommy asks with a wry smile.
“If I was an Uber driver I wouldn’t want you anywhere near my upholstery right now.” Buck grins at him before he adds: “Lucky for you, my jeep has seen much worse.”
“Thank you, Evan, but I can find somebody to pick me up. Your sister just got married, and I’m sure —”
“The staff is going to throw us out any minute now,” Buck interrupts. “They’re kind of used to us, but we just had a wedding with guests and cake in the middle of their hospital. Chim’s going to be okay, Maddie is happy; I can take a detour to get you home.”
Buck doesn’t point out that his parents might stay here for a while longer or leave as well; their plans don’t include him. He’s free to go and do whatever he wants to do, and what he really wants is a little more time with Tommy.
“Okay then,” Tommy agrees. He looks tired and grateful, and Buck really wants to kiss him again.
They’re just saying goodbye to Maddie when a nurse shows up in the doorway and gives the whole group a long glare because ‘the patient really needs some rest’. Things wind down pretty quickly after that, and within a couple of minutes Buck and Tommy are on their way to the parking lot.
Tommy shrugs out of his jacket and puts it in the trunk before he throws a critical glance at his muddy pants and boots. “Sorry, I don’t think this is much better.”
But Buck just shrugs it off. “Like I said, this jeep has seen a lot worse. Just get in and tell me where we’re going.”
They’re barely out of the parking lot when Tommy asks: “Does it always make that noise?”
“What?” Buck glances at him before looking at the street again.
“Your jeep, Evan. That whirring when you accelerate?”
Buck tries to focus on whatever Tommy is picking up, but he can’t hear anything unusual. “It just sounds like that?”
Tommy groans. “Please tell me I’m allowed to take your car apart.”
“As long as you put it back together, sure. Not today though.”
“Definitely not today,” Tommy confirms. “I’ll probably just take a shower and head straight to bed.”
Buck nods in agreement. “I think I need some food, but after that, yes. What a day.”
“You should’ve taken the rest of the cake. How’s your hangover?”
“Surprisingly okay, compared to this morning.”
Buck navigates his way through the slow evening traffic while he tells Tommy about the party and showing up at the wedding without the groom.
“Wow,” Tommy chuckles. “Please don’t take this the wrong way, but I’m kind of relieved I wasn’t there. I hope I’ll never be the designated driver who needs to keep you and Eddie in check.”
“It was fun, but in hindsight some of our ideas were not that great,” Buck admits.
“Poor impulse control, check.”
Buck laughs and glances at Tommy again. “You flew us into a hurricane.”
“That was a very thought-out, deliberate and rational decision. I considered the pros and cons for a whole minute while Howie talked.”
Tommy is clearly joking, even though he delivers his words in a completely serious tone, and Buck finds himself grinning and shaking his head.
For several minutes they just sit next to each other in companionable silence, until Buck finally says: “I’m really glad you came.”
“Told you I would.”
“So what’s the situation at Angeles Crest? Are you off tomorrow?” Buck asks.
Now that is a deliberate decision, because this isn’t the right time to explain how very unsurprised he is when people don’t show up for him. Wildfires and complicated on-call schedules are much safer topics of conversation.
It doesn’t take long before Tommy starts giving out more detailed directions, guiding them deeper into a neighborhood that’s very different from Buck’s own.
“Over here,” Tommy says and points to a bungalow on the left side.
Buck pulls up in front of the garage and takes in the house. Somehow he expected something with a little more character instead of this pale yellow paint job and a low roof, and suddenly he’s insanely curious to see the inside. There has to be more to this place than just a stupidly big garage.
“Can I come in?” Buck asks, and immediately wants to take it back when Tommy’s eyebrows shoot up in surprise. “Sorry, stupid question.”
It’s been a long day and they both need some rest. They’ve been on one official date, and Tommy already went out of his way to come to the hospital, so Buck doesn’t need to push for more time together right this moment.
But to his surprise Tommy nods. “Sure, but fair warning, I’ll probably fall asleep on you.”
“That’s okay,” Buck replies, unsure what to make of the words.
He gets out of the car on autopilot and follows Tommy inside. Does Tommy think Buck wants to spend the night here? Or is Buck supposed to tuck him in with a goodnight kiss before going home? What are the rules here?
“Welcome to Casa Kinard,” Tommy announces with a dramatic flourish. “As you can tell, the chances of getting lost in here are very slim.”
Buck thinks he could get lost; maybe not in the rooms themselves but in Tommy. There’s a large shelf in the living room, filled to bursting with books and knick-knacks. Every window sill holds plants and small figurines of… birds? A mix of colorful art and framed photographs hangs on the walls, and Buck can’t wait to figure out what all of it means to Tommy.
“I’m going to take a shower,” Tommy says and gestures towards the kitchen. “Feel free to help yourself to whatever’s in the fridge. I’ll be quick.”
Buck doesn’t want to eat right now, not when there’s a whole bookshelf to explore, but his stomach growls like it just waited for somebody to mention food. Tommy grins before he disappears into the bedroom with an awkward little wave. Maybe he doesn’t really know what to do now that Buck is here; neither of them planned this after all.
Today didn’t go the way Buck imagined it. Not at all. He’s happy for Chim and Maddie obviously, relieved that everybody’s okay, and grateful that Tommy showed up after all. But the whole day was an emotional rollercoaster, and now that it’s over Buck feels drained in a way he can’t explain.
Maybe he should go home. Alone, to the empty loft with nothing but his own thoughts to keep him company. He’ll feel better after he gets some rest. Or he can stay right here and take whatever Tommy is offering. Food and a goodnight kiss? Making out on the couch? Literally sleeping together? Buck isn’t sure, but he wants it.
His stomach growls again, so Buck decides to take a look inside the fridge. He finds a container of stir fry and is still eating when Tommy comes back in sweatpants and a tee, his hair damp from the shower.
Tommy kisses him like it’s the most normal thing in the world and pulls another container out of the fridge. “Do you want to take a shower? I can find you some clothes and a spare toothbrush.”
“Sounds great,” Buck agrees between bites of food.
Apparently he is invited to stay. Is that weird? They don’t even sit down, instead both of them are leaning against the kitchen counter side by side while they eat dinner. It’s far too domestic for two people who’ve gone on one failed date so far. But maybe it says more about them as people than any date or texting thread ever could, about Buck’s need for connection and about Tommy’s willingness to meet him halfway.
After dinner Buck showers - in a nice walk-in shower that can probably fit two large men easily - and gets dressed in another pair of sweatpants and a tee. When he comes out of the bathroom, Tommy is just putting fresh sheets on the bed, and the sight short-circuits something in Buck’s brain.
“You know, when I thought about taking you home after the wedding this wasn’t what I had in mind,” he blurts out.
Tommy throws him an amused look. “What happened to not knowing what you’re ready for?”
“I don’t know, but I have a very vivid imagination.” Buck grins and shrugs. “And sometimes learning by doing is the best approach.”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” Tommy says and throws a pillow in Buck’s direction. “But for tonight please imagine very vividly that we’re both going to get some sleep.”
“Sleep.” Buck draws the word out into a long wistful sigh and picks up the pillow.
Tommy hums and pats on the bed. “Get comfortable, I’ll be right back.”
So Buck crawls under the duvet while Tommy disappears into the bathroom. The mattress is nice and firm under his back, and for a moment he simply stares at the ceiling and marvels about this strange ending to this crazy day. He’s going to take Tommy out on a breakfast date tomorrow morning, that will make this —
Buck wakes up with a start. For a moment he’s not sure where he is or how he got here, but then he remembers taking Tommy home, staying at his house, going to bed… Did he fall asleep before Tommy even came to bed? Now he’s lying on his front, and Tommy is a warm solid weight right next to him, snoring softly. It’s oddly soothing, and for a couple of minutes Buck listens to Tommy’s deep and steady breaths until he dozes off again.
The next time he wakes up, Tommy is plastered against his back, holding Buck close. It feels great, and for some reason that’s what kicks his brain into overdrive. Because Buck met a really interesting and fun guy; a guy who made him realize he’s attracted to men, and against all odds the guy in question likes him too, even though Buck hasn’t been on his best behaviour, and he understands the job…
“I can hear you thinking,” Tommy grumbles in a low voice.
“Good thoughts only,” Buck promises cheerfully.
Tommy sighs in mock-exasperation. “Oh no, you’re one of those guys who’s awake before coffee.”
Buck smiles and decides to be bold. Quickly he gets out of Tommy’s arms, pushes him firmly onto his back and straddles his hips.
“Did I mention my vivid imagination?” Buck asks with a teasing grin. “I’m sure I can think of a way or two to wake you up.”

Reading the comments on this post and you know what? Tommy does have a podcast!
It's called Getting Rom-Commy with Tommy and he breaks down the history, plots, tropes, and cliches made famous by romantic comedies. He recorded the first episode—Tillie's Punctured Romance, the first feature film in the genre—in 2020 during the early days of the pandemic, and has since gained a small but loyal following who love his deep dives, quirky sense of humor, and the random breadcrumbs about his own life that he drops occasionally.
For three and a half years, he's posted an episode every other Thursday without fail, so it's the talk of r/romcommytommy when the promised episode about A New Leaf doesn't materialize. They worry about Tommy being sick or dead—or worse: growing bored with the subject matter—and flood his podcast inbox with well wishes and pleas to continue the series.
Finally, the episode goes up the following Thursday, and he prefaces it by apologizing for the delay. He had gotten tangled up in a work thing and had spent the previous week dealing with the fallout (i.e.: paperwork), but he's in high spirits because he isn't in federal prison and has reconnected with old friends. And made some new ones! Which has nothing to do with Walter Matthau's performance, which in Tommy's opinion is one of his best, and he jumps right into the movie and says no more about what kept him away.
After that, for months, the series takes on a different tone—more buoyant, almost bewilderingly cheerful—and it elevates what was already a great program to something that truly has a happy ending every time. More people start listening. The subreddit hits 10k members, and speculation about what's causing Tommy's audible joy runs rampant, with most agreeing it's because he has someone special in his life.
Then, the 103rd episode goes live. It's an unflinching look at the movie Blue Valentine, which is very much not a romantic comedy, and for the entire episode Tommy vacillates between sounding dead inside and on the verge of tears. "It's just another example of how even the most passionate relationship will erode over time," he murmurs. The episode ends without its usual jaunty outro.
It becomes clear over the next several weeks that something devastating has happened, because Tommy has ditched his beloved rom-coms for the most depressing movies ever made. The subject of the top trending post on the subreddit for a month is 'If I ever listen to the Closer episode again I will need the following: a gun.'
His listeners debate whether or not to jump ship, but the film analyses are still really good. Plus, it feels like abandoning a friend in their time of need.
I don't know if you will ever see this, Tommy, but I think I speak for everyone when I say: we love you, we're here for you, we're not going anywhere, but for the love of GOD please go to therapy, u/marshedmellowout comments on the post for the In The Mood For Love episode.
No one's quite sure if u/marshedmellowout got through to him, but it feels like a turning point when the subject of the next episode is Desert Hearts. Tommy spends almost half the episode runtime analyzing the film's hopeful ending, and even cracks a couple of jokes. While his voice doesn't have that incandescent happiness from before, it's much lighter.
The next few episodes continue that slow, upward trend, and the movies Tommy deconstructs go from having hopeful endings to happy ones. He's back to making terrible puns and laughing at his own jokes, and everyone on the subreddit breathes a collective sigh of relief. He's going to be okay.
None of his listeners are prepared for how he starts the 118th episode.
"You're all in for a treat today, because I'm joined by a very special guest. He's not a big fan of movies, usually, but he's got a mind made for analysis, so making him watch Groundhog Day was kind of a no-brainer. I've been dying to hear him pick this one apart. Evan, say hi."
The joy from all those months ago is clear and present in Tommy's voice, but it's tempered with something new: certainty.
"H-Hi, everyone," Evan says, bashful and a little giggly. "Sorry, I've never done something like this before."
"You literally had a walk-on role in the country's most watched TV show. 22 million people tuned in that night, and that's not including the streaming numbers."
"That was different! I had one line. Plus, I didn't care about making Brad look dumb."
"Brad didn't need your help with that," Tommy says, audibly besotted. "Evan, you can't possibly make me look dumb. They can't see me."
Groaning through laughter, Evan gasps, "Oh my god, I said you get five stupid jokes and you just wasted one. Better make the next four count."
"I'll do my best," Tommy says. "So, overall, what did you think of the movie?"
It's the most listened to episode of the entire podcast, and u/cadburybunnyeggs's post 'Evan needs to be a permanent host and here's why' makes the front page of Reddit.
(A year later, the Four Weddings and a Funeral episode, which goes live two days before Tommy and Evan get married, is nominated for a Webby Award. What happens afterwards in the subreddit breaks containment and winds up in the New York Times.)

how many times did tommy stay over and buck woke up in the morning looking at him, wrapped around him, touching him, breathing him in, and thought, I want this every morning?
how many times did buck cook for them and watch tommy—fresh from the shower and glowing—walk down the stairs, completely comfortable in the loft, rounding the island to give buck a kiss and a little compliment on how good the food smelled, and think, I want this every day?
how many times did they stay up late on the couch watching movies or sports or just making out soft and slow and unhurried, and buck thought, I want to end every night like this?
how many times did buck think about asking tommy to move in before he actually did? how soon did that first thought to pop into his head? what moment with tommy was so perfect that it made buck want to live in it for the rest of his life?

Thinking about Tommy running into Buck after Eddie told him he’s leaving, too. And Tommy trying to be friendly, but Buck being totally cold to him. Tommy thinking he deserves it and not even trying to confront him about it. But it starts to eat at him. And later, he starts to bubble Buck and decides to finally reach out only to discover he’s been blocked. Again, feeling like he deserves that.
Meanwhile, Buck shuts down after leaving Eddie’s. He feels too needy, like he’s too much and not enough all at once. He blocks Tommy so he doesn’t bother him. He refuses to cry. He still shows up at work, he’s professional, but he’s curt. He doesn’t joke around anymore, he doesn’t smile. He goes to work, he goes home. He doesn’t even bake anymore. Then, to top it all off, something happens to Maddie.
And maybe later Tommy finds out what happened and decides he needs to be there for Buck. And he goes to the loft and Buck opens the door, looking so sad and not at all like himself. And Tommy just pulls him into his arms and Buck finally breaks.
