miniseries -- BSD Characters as Musicals
part 1 -- ADA
see rules for what musicals qualify for this
this is not meant to be taken too seriously. this miniseries is mostly a joke. ha ha.
Part 2 -- The Port Mafia
Chuuya -- Wicked

why? -- because he's.... defying gravity.
actually it's because it's a powerful person who's taken advantage of and then framed or accused of betraying everyone
but ultimately it's because he's
---
Kouyou -- Water for Elephants

why? -- Kouyou 🤝 Marlena: trying to escape an abusive work environment with bf, and boss keeps giving orders to kill everyone. boss orders bf's death. sad. tragic.
I mean at least Jacob survived in the end. Water for Elephants is the good ending Kouyou never got
---
Ace -- The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals

why? -- no deep reason. I just have a feeling this guy would not like musicals. he's the titular Guy.
(I'm so sorry Paul you don't deserve to be compared to this guy. Paul my beloved <3)
---
Akutagawa -- Carrie

why? -- It really do be like Getting abused gives you stronger magic powers!! If people mistreat you enough, you'll become powerful enough to kill them!! anyway good for them, go do violence!
---
Higuchi -- Legally Blonde

why? -- somehow has a high ranking position in the mafia.. seemingly so she could stick with this one guy. She's really out here reaching ranks her subordinates could only dream of going "what? like it's hard?"
also she's blonde.
---
Hirotsu -- Heart of Rock and Roll

why? -- I went to this with my mother and when we were leaving the theater she said "only really old people would enjoy this because the music is from the 80s"
so congrats Hirotsu your old man status is getting you onto the list.
I wouldn't have had a musical to assign him otherwise.
---
Gin -- Twelfth Night

Gin 🤝 Viola: gender for workplace purposes. you've got your work gender and your home gender.
---
Tachihara -- The Count of Monte Cristo

why? -- it's the classic disguise + revenge combo. good for him <3
---
Elise (and Mori, by default) -- & Juliet

why? -- author and characters interact,, which is very Elise, being how she's kinda Mori's "character." It's the whole "I created you, please do what I want" and Elise going "lol. lmao even."
---
Q -- Frozen

why? -- Q 🤝 Elsa: getting locked away because they're just 'too powerful and dangerous'
Q is literally bsd Elsa (the hottest take you'll ever read)
---
Kajii -- Back to the Future

why? -- just the mad scientist vibes.
---
Oda -- In The Heights

why? -- Similar to Kenji, it's for the importance of community. But while Come From Away is about "everyone helps everyone," In the Heights has a lot of 'it takes a village to raise a child' energy.
he'd appreciate the adult characters looking out for the younger people in the community
---
Karma -- Aladdin

why? -- unfortunately he doesn't live long enough to make his higher aspirations a reality, but he's really got that proud of your boy energy.
---

My sister's the one who knows what to do, what would she do in my united shoes? Play along or try to sus out what went wrong? The lady thinks I'm someone else, but she makes me feel more like myself so... I'm not sure. Who am I besides how I look to her? Ooh-oh Olivia!

I played Sebastian in a production of the Twelfth Night musical by Shaina Taub and at the end of the musical there is a reprise of the song called “Is this not love” and in the reprise all of the couples are singing to each other and holding one another.
Obviously Sebastian and Olivia were singing to each other but just to the left of us, Antonio sang to Sebastian every night.
Well, on closing night I sang to Olivia as I always did, however, when it got to the second “is this not love that I feel for you” part of the song I looked over at Antonio. I saw our Antonio’s eyes grow wide when we looked at each other and sang the song before I turned back to Olivia.
I had to make the Sebastian and Antonio fans happy after I was bullied for ending up with Olivia! I’m sorry guys, Sebastian is stupid.

Happy Twelfth Night, have some Twelfth Night musicals! Above is a link to a high school production of the Shaina Taub/Kwame Kwei-Armah adaptation. (It used to be embedded, Tumblr hates Vimeo, ARGH.) I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but it looks pretty good! Though there are two Festes for some reason. (Well. Probably to give more people good roles. High school!)
youtube
Another adaptation performed by teenagers, and also written by one. Impressive! According to the 2018 Kickstarter for the cast album, the writer was inspired by Jesus Christ Superstar, and I can definitely hear that influence. I also hear some Rockabye Hamlet, which I'm guessing is a coincidence. This one takes a bunch of liberties with the plot.
youtube
And finally, What You Will, which sticks very close to the text but is set in the 1940s.
Actually, here, I'll throw in an opera:

i want to see Shakespeare in Elizabethan styled drag with southern accents.
1st, i believe that Shakespeare is written in the spirit of Drag. not in the "men played the women's parts" sort of way but in the "im serving drama and cunt and this is MY STAGE" kind of way. it is, ultimately, the more historically accurate way to go. WS was just... honestly that man would have lived for RuPaul and any other event based in drag.
because, im sorry, but Hamlet? a midsummers night? Twelfth mother fucking Night? all of it just screams Drag. the glitz the glam the makeup... its just... needed.
2nd, southern accents. all southern accents. not the cultivated kind, the REAL kind. i want the thickest most Alabamian, Texan, Appalachian, Louisianan, Creole, Cajun, etc, accents that exist to be on display.
3rd, it HAS to be done with Tudor and Elizabethan style. like, do that and make it as risqué and glam as you want but like, those puffy as fuck hot pant things? feathers in hats? the giant lace collars? they just lend themselves to the whole air of the "southern drag Shakespeare" and round it all out beautifully.

And while we're on the topic we need to stop letting them get away with not releasing the soundtracks
Because what do you mean there's a tempest musical with laura benanti and norm lewis and there's zero record of it

I went to see a musical adaptation of a Shakespearean play at my local theatre and while I was sceptical at first, they won me over when the fight scene began with someone playing the darth vader theme on a kazoo.

Update: We watched Twelfth Night in full last night.
Predictably brilliant: Tamsin Greig as Malvolia.
A nice surprise: Doon Mackichan's wonderful performance as Feste, and a google search revealing that I recognised her from Smack the Pony as well as Good Omens.
A mildly unpleasant surprise: How dark the fucking play gets in places! I had not remembered! *insert waffling on the fine line between comedy and tragedy*
Surprisingly easy: Convincing my husband to spontaneously watch a play lasting 2h40m. Given that he doesn't really like films due to their length, and we had watched the (surprisingly long) Midsommar the previous night.
Surprisingly difficult: Convincing my husband that, the 5th of Jan being the twelfth day of Christmas, its night is in fact Twelfth Night. Especially because his go-to was to count the days of Christmas and concur that yesterday was indeed the twelfth.
