An absolutely fantastic video essay about the lost 1916 German movie version of The Phantom of the Opera. Little is known about this adaptation. Stills do not even exist. However, this essay collects what little scholarship exists on the film and contemporary reviews suggest it was relatively faithful to the novel. It was also popular in the Netherlands when released and its last recorded screening was in late 1917.

Really great stuff for any silent film buffs and phans out there.
