Summary: The Whisperers’ threat had been put to an end and finally, the survivors of Alexandria and the other communities could focus on rebuilding their homes after the confrontations with their enemies had a toll on them. Warnings: TWD spoilers season 10 (finale episode “Here’s Negan”), long chapter, some peaceful everyday life scenes, fluff, but then; LOTS of flashbacks, angst, loss, grief, mention of suicide, childhood traumas, diving into early days of Anna’s survival with her parents,
The people of Alexandria had been working hard on rebuilding the community for the past month or so, even Anna helped renovate the ruins that had been left of their homes after the Whisperers came through the camp. If a couple weeks ago she was just a bit sick and not really sure if she was pregnant or not, she was getting more and more convinced of it as her stomach looked way more bloated than usual and she felt tired a lot more and a lot quicker, and her father had to tell her to take a break and have some rest. He knew of her condition and neither he nor Alden wanted her to overwork herself and be exhausted as a result. Her relationship with Alden also took a new turn when they adopted the little Adam as his first adoptive parents, Earl and Tammy Rose had both died and they found themselves already parents of a 1-year-old boy. Anna grew to love that boy as her own, caring for him and raising him alongside Alden, which greatly strengthened the bond between them. She loved having her little family and being able to focus on that in the aftermath of the last confrontation with the Whisperers. There was finally some peace they could enjoy.
But even that peace was disturbed by the animosity Maggie felt towards Negan, even though it was a little less bad than what Anna expected. Anna went to sat on the steps in front of the house in which Alden, her and Adam had moved into, and she held Adam on her laps, looking around. In the distance she could see her father hammering nails into a beam when Maggie and her son walked down the street and looked at him. They stared at each other for a few seconds and despite the distance between them, one could easily feel the tension. It had been like this ever since Maggie came back to Alexandria and saw Negan around. She stood up, carrying her son in her arms and approached her father. He noticed her approaching and smiled tenderly at her and Adam, for whom he had had no difficulty in loving like his actual grandson. He stroked the little boy's blond hair and Adam looked at Anna innocently grabbing the pendant around her neck. The very pendant containing old pictures of her and her parents. She looked down, glancing at the necklace.
“You still have it.” Negan said softly and she raised her head, nodding. These two pictures inside of the locket were the only memories she had of her life before the outbreak, the only memories of her mother.
“Of course. I still have your knife too.” He chuckled, and as she looked away, she felt him staring at her. It was a soft gaze, with a glimpse nostalgia in his eyes.
“You remind me so much of your mother.”
“I know.” She glanced down, her eyes getting teary at the thought of her mom. He softly drew Anna into a hug before she walked away to go and find Alden. She swiftly wiped her eyes and as she left her father, she looked back and saw Carol talk to him. She frowned a bit, having no idea why they then going the opposite direction together. Given Carol had all her gears and bow, Anna didn’t think much of it, figuring they left to hunt or something. She eventually found Alden, working on cutting planks of wood. He straightened up at the sight of Anna and Adam and gave her a sweet kiss before smiling at Adam and kissing him on the head, caressing his hair. The little boy giggled, calling out to his dad and he stretched out his arms to him. Anna smiled, passing the child to Alden. In that moment, everything that had happened outside the walls of Alexandria as well as inside was gone. They were in their little bubble, the three of them. It was those moments of peace that Anna cherished so much after all she went through. It was really refreshing to love and feel loved. She loved the family she was making with Alden, and it had become the one thing she cared for most and the fact that her father, the one person that had always had so much importance and influence in her life, was a part of it was her dream come true. She wished for this peace to last forever if it only could.
She never knew such a serenity and now that she looked back, even when she was a kid and thought her life was perfect, it wasn’t. Her father cheated on her mother, and he was never the perfect role model she thought he was, which she found out the hard way during her years at the Sanctuary. She remembered the day she was stuck in the trailer with her father and Gabriel and the latter made him confess “his sins”. Gabriel almost got some tears out of that tough man as he told his story, and it was a sight Anna never thought she would witness. For as long as she could remember, she had never seen her father cry or get emotional. She had seen him get aggressive, but it was never towards her. She heard him yell, or argue with her mom, but he never scolded her. Anna kept thinking about this as she walked around Alexandria until she noticed Carol coming back, alone. She remembered seeing her leaving with her father, but he was nowhere to be found. Frowning in confusion, looking around, she took a quick step towards her. Carol noticed her but didn’t stop walking until the young woman addressed her.
“Carol, where’s my dad? Didn’t you go out hunting with him?” Carol stopped in her tracks, apparently not so pleased to be stopped by Anna to talk about this but she turned to her.
“We decided it was best if he went to live outside Alexandria.” Anna was left there in bewilderment and watched Carol walk away, not really giving her time to reply or say anything. She could only realise that her father had been taken away from her again. Anna wasn’t alone but she had spent so long both trying to get away from and then back to her father, that it felt like it in that moment.
15 YEARS AGO (yeah, I know it’s supposed to have been around 12 years but shut up thank you I’m too lazy to fix my fic’s timeline)
Anna threw her school bag on the backseat, slammed the car door shut and went to sit on the passenger sit, in the front, sipping the strawberry smoothie her mother had bought her since after picking it up from school, they had gone to the mall. It was a bit hard money-wise lately but Lucille, her mother, had wanted to get her a little something she liked since the young girl was doing so well at school. Unlike in school, things weren't going as smoothly at home. Her father had lost his job as a high school gym teacher after getting into a fight with a man. That's hos her mother explained it to her anyway, but Anna knew her father beat up a man in a bar, but she didn't know the details of what happened and never dared ask him, even though he would probably just tell her. She wasn't scared of him, he would never hurt her, but she was smoewhat disappointed maybe, because he had lost his job because of it and the girl could see how her mother was burdened with taking care of the house and having to scold him all the time. He had become quite the man child since he was fired and the 11-year-old wondered if they would find him already in the basement, playing video games and yelling profanities while doing so. He had become less of the role model that Anna used to look up to. She always adored both her parents and see their relationship deteriorate was hard on her.
Anna stared at the cup in her hands as she slurped the smoothie through the straw, amusingly cupping her cheeks to the max. Music was playing on the radio and a song that the girl instantly recognized started playing. She smiled at her mom as the woman already started to hum the song but there was some sort of sadness or nostalgia in her eyes. She didn’t really understand why she looked this way and turned her head, staring straight ahead. They arrived in the driveway to the side of their house and Lucille parked the car. Anna got off, grabbed her bag and followed her mom inside. Her father’s voice could already be heard from downstairs along with some loud Rock music. Anna sat down in the living room to do her homeworks while her mother tried telling Negan that the two of them came home but he was too busy with whatever game he was playing. Anna bit her lips, silently watching as her mother sighed in annoyance and grumbled as she walked back and forth around the house, picking up things that were lying around and doing some tidying up and cleaning.
After about an hour, Anna was almost done with her homeworks and Lucille was finishing the dishes when her father finally came out of his cave.
“Oh, you’re home?” He asked, as if it were surprising to see them already home, and walked into the kitchen, opening up the fridge to get a few bottles of beers. Anna looked at what he was doing from the corner of her eyes, dangling her legs under the dining table.
“We have been for over an hour.” Lucille retorted, her back to him as she washed the dishes. He glanced at his wife, noticing she was mad at him, but he didn’t say anything else and walked into the living room, holding about three or four bottles in his hand.
“Hey, apple pie.” He kissed her on the head, stroked her hair and headed back to the basement. This was a typical afternoon for the young girl, ever since her dad lost his job and spent his days at home doing basically nothing, going out when he had appointments. She finished her homeworks and almost jumped on the couch, turning the TV on to watch some cartoons. It had only been about ten minutes of peace when she saw her mom walk across the living room, holding some leather jacket and a piece of paper and went to the basement. Anna was a bit confused so she turned off the TV and discreetly followed her downstairs, staying in the shadows as her mom entered the room. She never willingly listened to her parents’ fights, where it was mostly her mom doing the yelling and her father being rather passive, but right now she was wondering what it was about, and on top of that, she had never seen this jacket so it made her curious.
“Don’t be such a pussy! This is how you get better! You gotta take it!” He declared, not realizing Lucille was walking towards him until she stood in front of the TV.
“Are you playing with children?”
“Uh, teenagers. I think. Mostly.” He shrugged before replying to someone in a lower voice and looked up to his wife, clearly not knowing what she wanted with him. Anna could hear the anger in her mom’s voice as she looked down at the piece of paper in her hand.
“Please tell me that you did not spend $600 on this “Happy Days” bullshit.” She shook the jacket, staring at Negan who was apparently not as troubled by the amount of money. Anna didn’t even dare to ask her mom for stuff because she knew they had money problems and her father was spending the little they had recklessly. At 11 she was almost more mature and thoughtful than the grown man that he was. At the time, Anna didn’t realize it wasn’t normal. It used to be her normal.
“Calm down. Don’t worry.” He said in a casual voice. “I got two leads. One’s a lock, but the other one pays better, and I am just celebrating a little early, is all.
“Really?” He nodded with a silly smile that was probably going to annoy her mother even more. Her tone got harsh as she gradually rose her voice. “Tell me about these two leads. Cause you can’t be a gym teacher anymore You have a misdemeanour assault on your record, and you refuse to go back to school. So, please, oh, I would love it if you would tell me all about this job that you got that’s gonna pay for this.” He kept quiet and understanding he couldn’t explain himself, she turned around. As her mother was about to walk out of the basement, Anna quietly climbed the stairs.
“I threw the receipt away.” She heard her father say and as she settled on the couch, lying down, acting like she was watching the cartoon on the TV, her mother let out a grunt at his reply and she slammed a door. While she went back to doing house chores, outside the sun was setting and soon, night had fallen and it was time for dinner. Anna and her parents were quietly eating, all seated around the dinner table, her mother and her on one side, her father in front of them. The girl was just staring down at her plate, purposely not eating the heap of green beans to the side. Like many kids her age, she didn’t like vegetables and luckily for her, even though her parents always tried to get her to eat some, they never forced her.
“How’s the food?” She glanced at her dad as he tried making conversation.
“It’s good. Did you do somethin’ different?”
“Yeah, I… uh… I tried a little rosemary instead of oregano, and there’s a little white-wine reduction in the chicken stock.” He explained, and Lucille listened but kept very quiet. Anna picked up some green beans with her fork, watched it for a second, and slid it off the fork with her finger deciding against eating it.
“Do I have to eat those?” She asked, staring the beans down and her parents looked at her.
“No.” Negan chuckled and shook his head while Lucille smiled softly at her daughter. Besides from the disliked vegetables, her plate was practically empty already. “Was it good?”
“Yeah.” She sketched a smile. “Can I taste your chicken?” He looked at Lucille for permission and then cut a piece of his chicken stock and handed his fork to Anna. He had cooked hers apart from theirs so there wouldn’t be any alcohol in her food since she was a kid but he ended up letting her get a bite anyway. She took the fork and Negan chuckled at her reaction because she apparently found the taste of it very good. Then, her mom turned to her.
“It’s getting late. If you’re done, clear your plate and check your bag’s ready for tomorrow. Don’t forget your books.” As Anna stood up, she followed up with another question. “Oh, and Emma's mom confirmed it wass still ok for tomorrow night, don't forget your stuff and your pjs.”
“Yes, mom.” She replied mechanically as she put the dish in the sink and walked out of the kitchen to kiss her dad good night. Her mom was often the one who came to tuck her in, sometimes her dad came before she had fallen asleep and he would read her a story but she deemed herself not a baby anymore so it happened way less than it used to when she was under the age of 9. She walked into her room and stood by the door as she heard her mother spoke.
“My appointment’s tomorrow at 2:15.”
“What appointment?”
“I’m getting an MRI.” Anna had no idea what it was but by the tone of her mom’s voice rising up at the lack of reaction from her dad, she figured it was somewhat of a big deal. She went to change into her pjs, trying not to listen but in vain. “I need you to drive me home.”
“Uh, I can’t. Tomorros at 2:15? I-I have a meeting with the probation officer. Besides, you know how the doctors can be. They have you sit around for three hours with your ass hanging out, and then they tell you everything’s fine.” He sounded dismissive, like whatever it was wasn’t important and Anna knew her mother woudn’t like it. Anna turn off the checked her bags and sat in her bed, turning off the lights and with her diary, the cover over her head, a small flashlight and a pen in hand, she wrote in her diary. She had no idea at the time of how much doing this helped her process things that happened in her daily life, especially the things that happened with her parents’ rocky relationship. She was very young and often wondering if her mom didn’t divorce him because of her was a bothering thought to have. They used to look more in love. Her father used to be less careless too. It was all these little changes that she noticed happening over time that confused her, as she didn’t understand why things changed like that. She wished she could just never become an adult, because it looked so troublesome and in the long run, unhappy.
6 MONTHS LATER
Anna sat cross-legged on her parents bed, holding one of her stuffed animals on her laps, watching her father changing the bags hanging from her mother's IV stand while the latter rummaged through a case of DVDs. They had moved all their things in the basement after the outbreak. The house was locked, the windows barricaded to protect the three of them from the dangers of the outside while they tried to survive and continue her mother’s chemotherapy. Anna remembered when she heard her parents talk about this MRI she was getting and at the time, she had no idea what it meant but the next day, when going to sleep over at her friend’s house, she looked it up. She didn’t say anything to her friend and kept it to herself, thinking about all that she had read on the disease. It was scary and deeply upsetting. Then her mother told her the news when she got home and for weeks on end, she would cry herself to sleep. Then, things went downhill, and the dead rose and started to prowl the streets and now, it had been months and even though her father’s behavior had greatly improved, it was hard on the young girl to see her mother struggle, wearing wigs to dress her head as it got bald due to the heavy treatment, her face dull and ringed.
“Trying to figure out what James Bond movie I want to watch.” Lucille said in a low voice. Anna listened to them with one ear, playing with his stuffed toy to alleviate his boredom. Their daily life since the arrival of these monsters outside had not been as hectic as before. They spent their days locked up, sometimes watching movies thanks to a generator outside and sometimes his father went on an expedition to find what his mother needed for her treatment, or sometimes he read books to them. Her mom on her sofa, him sitting on the edge of the bed and Anna curled up next to him, reading over his shoulder or snuggled in her mother’s arms. The world going upside down did give her one thing she wanted, spending time with her parents and being like a family.
“Well, baby, I think we’re gonna have to skip the movie just for now. Generator’s making too much noise.”
“Hey.” She looked up at him. “We’re gonna have to kill it.”
“Why bother right?” He wondered, adjusting the bags on the IV. Athe sound of some monster snarling outside, Anna raised her head and glanced at the small windows blocked by a few boards, the light from the outside seeping into the basement, which was very dimly lit due to the lack of electricity. “I turn the generator off for a little bit, and they lose interest. They always do.” He then walked back to the fridge, grabbed a couple bags and moved them to the freezer on top. On his way out to go check the generator, he gently stroked Anna’s hair and left the basement. The girl never liked when he went outside but someone had to, and she was forbidden to step out of the house. It was too dangerous. Eventually he came back inside and he took a book at his wife’s request, settling his glasses on his nose and sitting on the bed. Anna sat next to him, her head resting against his shoulder as he read.
“‘I see what you are feeling,’ replied Charlotte. ‘You must be surprised, very much surprised… So lately as Mr. Collins was wishing to marry you. But when you have…” He sighed, pausing. “Mama.”
“Hmm?” She hummed.
“This book sucks. It’s killing me. I-I-I can’t… I can’t do it.” He shook his head, glancing at the book with a half amused smirk. Anna chuckled at her father’s reaction and he kissed her hair before looking at Lucille.
“You’re the one that won’t let me watch James Bond. Read.” She mischieviously kicked the book with the leg she rested on his lap. Anna straightened up at the sound of the fence surrounding their house rattling because of this monster that the sound of the generator kept attracting there. Negan put a hand on his daughter’s back to reassure her and Lucille stared at him.
“You gotta take care of it.” Negan knew she was right. He got ready and went outside, armed with a hammer. He was gone for a couple minutes when Lucille grew tired of waiting and stood up.
“I’ll go see what’s taking so long. He’s never gonna kill that thing.” She dragged her IV along with her as she walked away. “Stay right there, okay?”
“Yes, mom.” Anna replied, watching her leave. A silence disturbed by the noises of struggle outside fell on the room and she lied down, sitting her plush on her stomach, silently playing with it, moving her toes around in her socks until she suddenly heard a gunshot outside and curled up, covering her ears in surprise. The monster had stopped making scary noises afterwards though. She just heard her mother’s voice coming from outside but it was muffled and she couldn’t understand what she was saying but when her parents came back, the generators was on and they watched a movie together before her father went out to get some fuel to keep the generator going because it was not only useful to watch movies, it maintained the cold temperatures needed for the bag for her mother’s treatment because without it, she would decline even quicker then she already was with the perfusion. When he came back, Lucille had taken off her wig, wrapped her head in a scarf and was lying in bed with Anna next to her. The young girl hadn’t slept in the same bed as her parents since she was a toddler but there wasn’t really enough room to move her bed out of her room and sleeping in their bed was comforting for her.
“I’m good.” Lucille said softly, resting her eyes.
“I got something for you. I found someone’s stash.” He pulled out a tiny purse and unzipped it. She chuckled. “Now, it’s a little bit dried out, but this is gonna help with your nausea. Hey. No drugs, all right, young lady?” He added, glancing at Anna and she nodded, making an expression of exaggerated disgust and he smiled.
“You’re having to go further and further every time.”
“Well, generator needs gas, and this place has been picked over. But the bright side is… that I reckon that’s exactly what’s keeping us safe. There is nothing here that anybody wants.”
“You can’t keep it up.” She declared weakly. “We need to move. We need other people.”
“It’s just too dangerous out there.”
“That’s’ my point.” Anna silently watched her parents talk, holding her stuffed animal against her chest.
“Baby, you have three treatments left. That’s it, okay? So we are gonna get your strength up, and then I will put you and Anna on my motorcycle and I will take you wherever you want to go… wherever you can dream up. I promise.”
“Okay.” She eventually agreed to it and the day went by and night fell. Every time they would go to sleep, her father would wrap his arms around her mom, trying to warm her up and fight the chills and shivers that shook her weakened body. Anna was curled up next to her mom and often find it hard to find sleep. She looked at her mom when a shiver ran through her body and she made a sound that got the girl to open her eyes. As her father began to softly sing their song to her and saw that Anna wasn’t sleeping so he gave her a comforting smile, caressing her cheek with his thumb and she closed her eyes to try to fall asleep, curled up against her mother.
“Ugh. Damn it.” Negan swore, looking out the window as an umpteenth walker came snarling by.
“It’s not like killing a person, babe. It’s not even like killing an animal. You can’t let it keep bothering you.” She said as she cut a can of food open. He turned to her.
"It doesn’t bother me. I… I’m just worried that I’m gonna get used to it.”
“Okay.” She nodded, smiling tenderly. While he went to turn the generator off, Anna helped her mom set the table and by the time he returned, they had lit a few candles and Anna was seated, touching the floor with the toes and her parents joined her, sitting in front of each other. They ate, chatting and laughing together. It was one of these light moments that made it all seem like everything was fine and there weren’t zombies outside their house. Some normal moments were good for all three of them.
‘How, um… how’s your dinner?” He enquired, after some sauce on his plate.
“It was good. If I had known that dog food could taste like this… I would have been eating that shit all along.” They laughed heartily together. It was crazy that it took all this shit happening outside for Anna to see her parents be so loving towards each other, like old times. She loved to see it; it was very heartwarming.
“Hey.” Lucille called out to him as she turned around to grab something. It was a shopping bag that she had Anna pass to her dad. “Happy anniversary.”
“Wait. You actually know what day it is?” He asked as he took it, adding a thank you for his daughter. Lucille chuckled.
“No. I just want you to have it. Open it.” He looked at her with curiosity and proceeded to open the bag with a sound of paper rustling. Anna turned to her father to look into the bag. He glanced at Lucille, who smiled cheerfully, laughing and he took his vintage jacket out of the bag, the exact same she yelled at him for after he had spent hundreds of dollars on. She never got rid of it apparently.
“Holy… shit!” He was so happy to have the jacket. “Where did you get this?”
“Okay, it was in the crawlspace this whole time. Cause I was mad. I was so mad that I couldn’t return it, so I just hid it, and I told you I returned it. So, there you go.”
“You’re awesome.” They laughed together again and he motioned for Anna to come closer and held up the jacket with an amused grin on his face. “You want to try it on?”
“I can?”
“Yeah.” He chuckled, nodding and she turned around, slipping one arm after the other in the sleeves and she then turned back to them, stretching out her arms with a big smile. The piece of clothing was way too big for her body, but she loved having it on. He joked that she looked like a little badass and then drew her into a hug and she sat in his lap, and he pressed a kid on her forehead.
“I’m sorry.” Lucille then said, catching his attention. “I’m really sorry I made a big deal out of it. If I’d known…” She took a deep breath, briefly closing her eyes. “like, all this was gonna happen, I wouldn’t have cared about a stupid credit-card bill.”
“No. No, no, no…” He shook his head. “See, I, um… I don’t deserve anything from you. And you shouldn’t be apologizing to me. Uh, it should be me apologizing to you, and you.” He glanced at his daughter, soflty holding her chin in between his thumb and index before turning to Lucille as he spoke. The smiles on both Lucille and Anna’s faded as the conversation got a little more serious and the girl just looked down at her empty plate, listening. “the pain that I put you through… You know, uh… You know, I lie awake at night just wondering how I got so lucky that you have stuck with me.”
“Come here.” Lucille stood up and walked around the table and sat on his laps, holding his face in her hand, the other on her daughter’s shoulder. “I stuck with you ‘cause I could always see the man you are right now. Even when you weren’t. And that asshole really had it comin’.” She assured, almost crying.
“Yes, ma’am.” They shared a kiss and they all fell asleep easy that night, until he woke up suddenly at the sound of water dripping from the fridge. Lucille and Anna both sat up in the bed after he jumped off, almost running to open the freezer and the moment he did, water came flowing out of it. This was really bad. He grabbed the thermometer inside and looked at it with a grave glimpse in his eyes. After a cheerful evening, the day was starting off on the wrong foot and even the 11-year-old knew that it meant nothing good. She wished she could just go back in time and spend another good dinner time with them. “Remember that guy and his family came through here a while back? The kid had leukemia, uh, and they were looking for this group of doctors that travelled around in a mobile clinic? Well, I remember. I sat down with him. He showed me his map. These doctors, they take the same route every time and they make the same stops. I think I know where they are, and if I leave right now, I can catch them before they move on.”
“They could be dead by now if they even existed to begin with.” Lucille retorted. “And then what do you do when you find them? You have nothing to barter with, so just stop.”
“I will figure it out.” He insisted, grabbing the bag he had put all his stuff for the journey in, but she cut him off, raising her voice, telling him to stop and Anna, still sat on the bed, looked at her feet.
“I have something to tell you. Anna, could you go upstairs, for a moment? I need to talk with your dad.” The young girl nodded, and hopped off the bed, and going upstairs. She stayed in her old room for about half an hour, going through her diaries and looking at toys lying there and pictures. Before leaving, her dad came to hug her and promised to come back quickly but Anna was scared he wouldn’t and she went back to her mom, who tried explaining to her that even if he did come back with the bags and things needed for her treatment, she wouldn’t make it. He just didn’t want to give up. There were a lot of crying and tears from Anna who didn’t want to lose her mom but then a few days passed, and then a couple weeks during which Anna took care of her mother the best she could but her health was declining more rapidly without her treatment. She was very weak and tired all the time so Anna would read her books and cuddle with her until one day, Lucille asked her to take some of the food in the basement and go upstairs to wait for the return of her dad, telling her she wanted to be alone as she was extremely tired. Anna didn’t know what to do so she gave a big hug to her mom, gathered her things and went upstairs, as requested. The girl was growing even more scared of ending up alone as time went by and her dad didn’t come home. After a few days, she decided to go check on her mom. She had realized she forgot to take her father’s jacket with her and went to get it. As she stood by the door, she read a message her mom had written on it but didn’t understand what she meant so she knocked timidly.
“Mom? Sorry, I- I forgot dad’s jacket. Can I come in?” She waited, almost holding her breath and put her ear against the door. There was no noise, just complete silence so she opened the door and walked in on her mother, sitting in bed, one hand cuffed to the bed frame and a plastic bag taped over her head. “Mom?” She stared at her, her eyes getting teary. She stepped towards her to take off the bag but immidietaly backtracked when her mom let out a death rattle and her head slowly rose. When she groaned at Anna, trying to get at her with her other arm, the young girl screamed and then started to sob hysterically. She stepped back, slipping on something on the floor and fell, begging her mom to stop. She didn’t want to face it. Her mother had had enough and killed herself and came back as one of these monsters she heard outside but it was so traumatic to see for her. She managed to get back on her feet, took the leather jacket and ran out, covering her ears, letting out sharp cries. She ran upstairs and went to hide in her room. It had only been a few weeks that her dad was gone and she was scared she was going to die alone in this house, but she was too fearful to go out on her own. She waited there, under her bed, curled up, clutching onto her dad’s jacket, only daring to come out when she was getting hungry, but she quickly ran out of the little food left.
Weeks later, her stomach was hurting from not eating and she woke up under her bed, almost jumping, hitting her head to the bed when she heard the door open and a voice rise in the house. She was still a bit sleepy and didn’t recognize the voice so she stayed hidden, burying her face in the jacket and crying, like she would do every day since she found her mother turned into a monster. She hoped that whoever came into their house wouldn’t search it because they would find her, and she didn’t want to be killed but when she clearly identified her dad’s voice, coming up from the basement, calling her name as he walked around the house and came to her room, she stopped her crying, sniffing slightly and came out of under the bed.
“Oh, my god…Oh, Anna… baby…” He immidietaly fell to his knees and drew her into a tight hug, holding onto her as if his life depended on it.
“Dad…” She sobbed. “Mom… she…”
“I know. I know, apple pie… it’s gonna be all right, I’m here. Shh, shh, it’s all right…” He caressed her hair, rocking her in his arms, stroking her back, trying to calm her down and comfort her but he knew that after witnessing her mother in such a state and spending weeks alone, she wasn’t going to forget it at the snap of a finger. His daughter would be left traumatized from the death of her mother. “Hey, hey, hey… look at me.” She tried getting a hold of her crying as he held her face in his hands. “We’re leaving, okay? Together. It’s you and me from now on, all right? You gotta stay close to me, and do what I tell you, okay?”
“Okay.” She said, in a shaky voice. He then had his daughter grab an old school bag, telling her to take a few things and as night fell outside, she accompanied him to the fence, where equipped with pliers, he cut a long end of the barbed wire stretched above the fence and wrapped it around a bat he had with him. Anna had no idea where he got that baseball bat, but that didn't matter. Her mother was dead and now, it was only her and her father against the world. The two of them against the monsters. He told her to stay right by the door, outside and he came out of the house coming up in flame a couple minutes later. She was silently crying, following him to his motorcycle and sat behind him, holding onto him.
They drove for a while and he pulled up next to an old bar and got off the vehicle. He turned to his daughter.
“Hide here, keep quiet and stay out of sight, you hear me? Don’t come out until I come for you.” She nervously nodded and she crouched in the shadow of the motorcycle, looking around, holding her breath, watching her father walk around the establishment. She jumped in surprise at the sound of a gunshot in the distance and closed her eyes shut, her hands covering her ears. She was shaking. When a shooting started, she pressed her hands harder, burying her face in her knees, tears rolling down her cheeks. This was a lot for one night and she couldn’t even know what was going on as it was too risky to come out and she was too scared to even move anyway, and maybe find her dad shot or something like that. It was her worst nightmare, losing her father now that she had lost her mother, and be alone forever. After a few minutes, the shooting stopped, and she dared look up. She didn’t see any movement around the establishment but stayed behind the motorcycle. Her father hadn’t come back for her, and she didn’t want him to get mad if she disobeyed and maybe put herself at risk, which is what she understood to be the reason of her having to hide. And she had no idea that she was going to have to hide even more in the future. Little did she know who she would see her father become after tonight…
Anna was walking around Alexandria, Adam in her arms while Alden still worked on renovating the place; staring into space, she was lost in her thoughts, letting her mind dwell on old memories from her childhood. She was young when it all started, and greatly traumatized by the death of her mother. Everything that happened made her who she was today but maybe some of that trauma could have been avoided but it was never up to her. Her dad fucked up. She was a child who followed him around, stood by his side but then happened what happened when Rick and his group came around and here she was today, with a son, in a relationship with Alden and pregnant with his child. With how things started out for her in this new world, she never thought she would have a family of her own, beside her father, whom she always fought for, despite hating him sometimes. It had always been only the two of them in the end and he was the only one who would never wish her harm while everyone could one day turn on her but she didn’t really believe that anymore. She trusted most of these people and knew which would help her if in need.
As she walked, she came near the gate, opened as a group amongst which Carol and Maggie, got ready to go out and do whatever, she saw her father casually walking into Alexandria and froze. She was surprised to see him back, so confident, after Carol told her she brought him outside to live away from everyone else, and especially, from Maggie who still held a grudge against him. From a distance, she watched Maggie stare at him. One day, she was definitely going to kill him, and it coud only be a matter of time.

An Upcoming Easter Miracle, Foreshadowed By Jesus in 6x10…?
And just to be clear, 6x10 The Next World was when Jesus was frist introduced to the TWDU...
The opening minutes of TOWL 1x5 mirrored TWD 6x10 like a carbon copy.
We had cold drinks:
We had finding food in cars:
We had drinking soda sexily:
We had spearmint and baking soda flavored toothpaste:
We had interrupted sleep:
Right after Rick and Daryl find the food truck in 6x10, Jesus suddenly appears before them. He comes out of nowhere, and as he does, he delivers this dialogue:
Ten walkers in 11 minutes. As Noah's t-shirt taught us, 11 can be read "one one". So it could be 10 and 2 (one + one = 2), and it could also be 10x11 as in a reference to 10x11 Morningstar. Jesus was referred to as the Morningstar in Revelation 22. Read this post for more on why that's significant, and how it relates to the Slabtown clock. And keep in mind that Sirius is a Morningstar, which is fitting, because we got a surprising appearance by Father Gabriel, a one-eyed Sirius figure.
Now, I've been talking a lot about licence plates lately. Here we see another interesting exemple:
LK8-4167
And the reason it's interesting is because we've seen it before, in 5x9 WHAWGO:
In WHAWGO, we see it practically as we simultanously hear Beth singing Struggling Man, as this was the last episode Beth appeared in (in Tyrese's fever dream). And back when season 5 aired, someone clever in TD (I'm sorry I don't remember who, it's been like a decade) theorized that it could be a reference to Luke 8:
Why Luke 8, is that particular part relevant? Well...
...there is that part about Jesus raising a dead girl, I suppose that could be relevant...especially now, just before Easter...
In this post I talk about Officer Lichari's Dodge Magnum and why it's such an interesting vehicle for TD, and in this post I talk more about the symbolism around the rams.
I'm bringing that up again, because the car where Rick and Michonne found the RAMen noodles was in fact a Dodge:
...and the Dodge logo is a ram...
And we did see some very fierce taxidermy rams in TOWL 1x5:
...so yeah! Happy Easter I guess! Let's keep an eye out for suspiscious resurrections!

Thoughts on a Beth is alive reveal at Comic Con?
I am wondering what your theorist thoughts are on the likelihood of a Beth is alive reveal this year at Comic Con?
If I were among TPTB, I WOULD do the reveal there for several reasons.
First, the amount of publicity would be outrageous. Even though TWD flagship retained a certain audience until the end, it was nowhere near the audience it had at its peak in seasons 3-6. Bringing a character back from the heyday may attract some of the viewers that fell away especially after seasons 6 and 7. This is different than reveals for the flagship. They already had a built-in audience and an ensemble cast and stories to carry the show. If the audience thinks the spin-off will just be Darly fighting zombies in berets, many may not tune in for a repeat of the last four or five seasons of the flagship series. However, if they think he may finally get a real love interest, find clues about the outbreak, and discover what really happened to Beth and where she has been all these years it will create enough suspense for the GA to give it a try.
Second, it clearly ties into the theme of the last season of FTWS. “You have to go back to go to forward." Morgan had to go back to King County. There he discovered what he THOUGHT happened to Duane is not what really happened. Dwight is saying that he wants to go home. Madison has to go back and fix her wrongs. There is a return back to where these characters were at the beginning of their arcs, but now they are wiser and stronger.
Third, if they wait until into the Daryl spin-off is actually airing, it will not give the audience time to get reacquainted with Beth’s story. By revealing that she is alive (but not giving much away in terms of story), they will still get the shock value of when and how she is found, the publicity BEFORE the show starts, and give the audience a chance to reconnect to Beth’s story and buzz about what might have happened.
Last year, they revealed the Rick/Michonne spin off at Comic Con instead of waiting until the coda of the final episode. I think they should do the same here.
The only down side will be certain ships will be mad. However, as we have seen, they will be upset at almost anything. I think they could ease this by playing up that this Beth could be very different than the old Beth and that Daryl and Beth are both different people and may not have the connection they did in the past… yada…yada. We know the symbolism and the end game, but it may appease some.
Thoughts?
TWDMusicBoxMystery:
I really love everything you’ve laid out here. You’ve backed it up with logic and evidence. And obviously, I would totally LOVE it if they revealed her as being alive at ComiCon.
My only hesitation is that now, with the actors’ strike looming, Comicon may be very interrupted or not even happen at all. Unfortunately.
The good news is that at least season 1 of the Daryl spinoff has already been filmed, and I imagine most of season 1 of the Richonne spinoff has been, too. So, hopefully the strike won’t affect our fall shows too much.
But me and my fellow theorists wondered if the reason they suddenly started announcing the air dates for next batches of shows (Daryl Dixon Sept 10, back half of Fear Oct 22) because they know they won’t be able to do it at Comicon. They usually wait until Comicon to reveal the dates and the official trailers.
Anyway, obviously I totally hope you’re right. But we’ll just have to wait and see what Comicon brings us, if anything. And here’s hoping both the writers’ strike and the actors’ strike get resolved soon! Xoxo! 🎆 💘

Our show and our Lead Couple still kicking ratings ass!
Good news. They are FINALLY letting go of the old live viewing ratings method as the only way and taking in early viewing on streaming into account.
This article still clings to it a little, in the title and some comparisons, but the bottom line is...
"The premiere episode that debuted at 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22 delivered 3.2 million total viewers"
"which has spawned three spinoffs (two on-air, one incoming) and other projects in active development, remains a Top 10 cable drama among key adult demographics
"The Season 11 premiere was available on AMC Plus one week ahead of its linear debut and grabbed the top launch viewership ever for the premium cabler’s streaming platform. Per an inside source with knowledge of the company, it drove the biggest week of new sign-ups for the streamer in 2021 and the episode has also been the top title on AMC Plus across all devices. Notably, the second episode of the season, which became available on AMC Plus last Sunday on the same day the first was being aired on TV, is pacing ahead of the premiere episode and is on track to break its viewership record. "
"For 12 consecutive years, the series has remained the No. 1 series on basic cable among adults 25-34 in live+3 viewing."
So to sum up...linear views may be down, but they are down for every show out there. TWD remains #1, and most importantly for the Caryl nation - Our couple is carrying the show and the show is thriving!
eta - I know people who can't get AMC+ hate this, but I'm just trying to show the show's success. Hopefully, AMC+ will get in gear for you international folks!

Key Filming Notes: This is the episode they were filming where strong storms blew through locally and produced tornadoes in Newnan, GA that tore up the high school. However, filming took up again the following day. Cast and Crew report night filming on SM at the HWY 16 Farm. Overall, episode filming took place in the woods, at the AZS, on a farm (maybe just using the field of the farm?) on HWY 16, somewhere on Rising Star Rd, and at the Southlake Mall in Morrow, GA. The Southlake Mall in Morrow location took everyone by surprise. It was located on a very busy road in a very busy area so many pictures were taken. There are pictures of the Mall filming that seem to capture Maggie in costume and might be part of a flashback.

Was The Walking Dead Planning to Go Past the Comic Stories?
https://ift.tt/2QM9DX4
When AMC announced that its franchise-spawning series, The Walking Dead, was coming to an end, it was surprising, yet expected. While the ratings-dominant heyday of the prolific series is well in the rearview mirror, the mothership show continues to guide what remains an immensely profitable franchise. Yet, as TWD approaches the endpoint of its source material, Robert Kirkman’s comic books, fans assumed that the show was ending on its own terms. However, star Jeffrey Dean Morgan says that plans were still being made for more seasons when AMC axed the series, which would have surpassed the comic’s storylines.
In a recent interview with Collider, Morgan discusses how the show’s sudden finish line setting took the cast by surprise (which we already knew), and notably reveals how it shocked the top of its creative hierarchy, specifically chief content officer Scott M. Gimple and showrunner Angela Kang. Thusly, the actor’s Negan-esque candor essentially flips the previously presumed natural death narrative implied in AMC’s September 2020 announcement of The Walking Dead’s end after eleven seasons. It’s a surprising notion, since the announced endpoint perfectly aligns with the show’s current state, in which it is adapting the comic’s final storyline, focused on our survivors’ struggles with the overwhelmingly powerful de facto post-apocalyptic nation state group known as the Commonwealth.
“The news, when we got it in the middle of the pandemic, was a complete surprise, not only to me and the rest of the actors, but to everybody involved in the show from production. Scott Gimple and Angela Kang had no idea either,” reveals Morgan. “It came from nowhere and there was such a huge pivot. I think they had Season 11 all mapped out, where they were going to go, and suddenly it became, ‘We also have to close the story, in a way.’ It took everybody by surprise, so it was a massive pivot. And then, they threw in the six tacked-on episodes to Season 10, and instead of doing 16, we’re going to do 24 more. There was a lot of stuff to wrap our heads around.”

The Walking Dead: What the Commonwealth Means for Season 11 and the Ending
By Alec Bojalad
Indeed, Morgan’s answer implies that Gimple and Kang originally had dramatically different plans for The Walking Dead Season 11; plans that were presumably made in the context that the show would reliably remain chugging along. Yet, even as the bonus episode-extended Season 10 prepares to air its finale, it’s already clear that the Commonwealth—a name thus far unmentioned on the show or in any promotional ephemera—is established as the next series-encompassing threat. With the series-ending Season 11 confirmed to manifest in supersized form with 24 episodes, that gives the creative coalition plenty of time to play out the Commonwealth storyline to its comic-adapting completion in a way that’s satisfactorily paced. Yet, this leaves us with our titular question wondering if the showrunners intended to implement the arguably sacrilegious plan of taking the series past the chronology of Kirkman’s comic.
Comic-anachronistic storylines have been a staple throughout The Walking Dead’s run, even going back to 2010’s Season 1, in which Rick Grimes and company had a misunderstanding with the Vatos street gang back in Atlanta over a duffel bag full of guns, and—perhaps the most infamous example of then-showrunner Frank Darabont’s creative liberties—the episode in which they briefly find refuge (and crucial exposition on the zombie outbreak itself) inside the Atlanta CDC. Indeed, these so-called “filler” episodes proved to be a necessary measure even during the show’s heyday, when it averaged only 16 episodes per season—a contrast from Season 10, which concludes with 22, followed by the aforementioned 24 for the final run. Therefore, the notion that Gimple and Kang would have conjured up an entirely original story arc—unprecedented as it may be—wouldn’t be outside the realm of possibility, especially if AMC wanted to keep the mothership show around to continue guiding the cash cow TV franchise. This is especially true, seeing as the array of TWD spinoff series arriving in its wake will inevitably stray from the comic canon.
Of course, it could have also been the case that The Walking Dead Season 12 would have simply continued the comic-concluding Commonwealth storyline by way of a more saturated Season 11. This idea, with a presumed ending with Season 12, might be the more sensible theory to embrace, since the long-in-the-undead-tooth television staple would have likely outstayed its welcome (yes, haters, even more than it already has,) if it deigned to venture past the transformative climax of the Commonwealth storyline Kirkman crafted for the comic. There may be more leeway on that front for current spinoffs Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond, which take place within the established chronology, only far away, but Kirkman’s comic series has always been treated as a prophetic omnibus for the mothership show; one from which it occasionally deviates, but ultimately maintains as its narrative true north. Sure, the untitled Daryl and Carol spinoff will surpass that threshold, but keep in mind that, in the comics, the former doesn’t exist and the latter died way back at the Prison.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
The Walking Dead will air its Season 10 finale—centered on Morgan’s Negan—this Sunday on AMC. However, the wait for Season 11 will apparently be a short one, since the network is already teasing a summer arrival for the final frame’s premiere.

My take on 10x18 Find Me
When I first watched episode 10x18 Find Me, I was overwhelmed by how much symbolism there was in it, and I don’t think I was the only one who felt this way.
I’ve previously written a couple of posts about something I like to call the three/tree/trunk symbolism, or “Trunk Resurrection” part 1 and part 2, and I’ll refer to those for further reading to avoid this getting too long. I have a feeling it'll be long enough as it is, because there were so many amazing talking points in Find Me.
One of the first things we see in Find Me are the weird spikes/prongs sticking out of a tree. Later we see them sticking out of the doorframe of the front door in Leah’s cabin. This is where I refer to the Trunk Resurrection posts for simplicity’s sake, but the short story is, I read the number “three” as synonymous with both «tree» and «trunk».
This is because in Still, we saw Beth and Daryl hiding in the trunk of a car. We also saw the number «3» written on the inside of the trunk, suggesting that «3» and «trunk» are synonymous. In Find Me, we saw Leah and Daryl hide behind the trunk of a tree. The tree trunk is a different representation of the «trunk» symbol, but it essentially symbolize the same thing, it is tool TPTB use to symbolize how Beth was saved from the walker horde some of us imagine surprised TF after Coda. I believe, like many of us do, that TF placed Beth in the trunk of a car after they had to run to get away from the approaching walker horde. They put her in the trunk of a car (foreshadowed by the trunk in Still and Alone) to save her from being eaten, and intended to return to her later to give her a proper burial. When they returned, she was «gone».
So when we see Daryl and Leah hide behind the trunk of the three, it’s the trunk symbolism we’re seeing. And the three spikes/prongs are also representations of the three/tree/trunk symbolism, because three/tree/trunk are synonomous.
The three prongs/spikes were placed on a wooden doorframe, the door was made of wood, and it had a big X, or cross, on it. And like I mentioned, I’m not going into the details of the three/tree/trunk theory here, but the way we see them laid out in this episode pretty much confirms that these symbols are meant to be interpreted together. The three’s, the trees and the trunks are symbols which I read as pointing to the place where Beth was placed after Coda. Whether it was a real trunk, or a symbolical trunk, that we won’t know until we see it. And in the case of Leah’s cabin, I’m actually leaning towards interpreting the entire cabin as a trunk reference. It was painted blue, (blue clue theory), it was made of wood, and etymologically the word «trunk» can refer to a box, a coffin (think Daryl’s «bed» of choice in Still), the trunk of a car, a tomb (empty?), a carnival ride car as we saw with Rick in 7x12, a shipping container as we saw at the garbage heaps, or maybe even a music box. The «trunk» symbol can refer to a number of things. So when I say that Beth was placed in the trunk of a car after Coda, it could literally mean the trunk of a car, or any of the above.
So! Back to Leah’s cabin. There’s a door, it’s made of wood, it’s marked with three prongs/spikes on the doorframe, and it has an X on it. These are all references to the three/tree/trunk family of symbolism.
And directly on the inside of the door, we see Dog lead Carol to the hiding place, where the box with Daryl’s note is «buried» underneath the floor boards. The picture of Leah’s son Matthew is also buried there. It was not lost on me that Leah covers the hiding place with an animal hide, and I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling fairly confident that it is a deer hide. We’ve seen time and again that TPTB use deer to symbolize Beth, and it’s only appropriate that one of the ways they make Beth references on this show is by utilizing a deer HIDE.
Get it? Something that’s hidden? Unseen? Buried? Represented by a deer HIDE? Makes perfect sense to me. Also, make sure to read read @twdmusicboxmystery‘s theory on deer symbolism. It has always been one of my favorites.
I’ll get back to the buried box shortly, but I want to make sure we all take a moment to appreciate how when we first saw the picture of Leah and Mathew, it was sitting out. Daryl looked at it while tied up in Leah’s chair.
The next time we see it, it appears as though Leah has retrieved it from it’s hiding place under the floor boards. This indicates that she at one point decided hide it, or even «bury» it. She accidentally breaks the glass of the frame, something which wakes a sleeping Daryl. Yup, I’m side-eying the symbolism in that as well. Breaking the glass - someone wakes up. Oki doki, good to know, especially since we always see so much broken glass around Beth. She then shares with Daryl the story of how she came to be Matthew’s adoptive mom.
The next time we get a reference to the picture, is when Daryl returns to the cabin after Leah’s ultimatum. The box is no longer hidden, and the picture is just «gone». This whole mini-arc screams of Beth death fake-out to me. The picture was buried, then suddenly it’s gone? It always reeked of resurrection symbolism to me, and when the brilliant, eagle-eyed @wdway managed to dig up some truly sensational picture references, it really couldn't possibly refer to anything else. Make sure you familiarize yourself with her absolutely incredible discovery.
Anyway, I read the fact that the box is buried underneath the floorboards (and a deer hide) as a reference to the three/tree/trunk symbolism. The box represents a trunk/coffin/grave, and it’s «buried». As it should be, if it represents a grave. And ultimately, when Daryl returns, it is “gone”.
Also, I believe that we're supposed to interpret the fish mounted on the wall above the «buried» box as a sort of «grave marker». We have seen this type of fish several times in key scenes throughout the years, such as in the garage in 10x10, in Dwight’s room in the Sanctuary, in the mysterious cabin in season 3 where they found the dead dog and Daryl said «I guess Lassie came home» (get it? Lassie came home, as in “returned” home. Sirius symbolism), as well as in FTWD.
The fish can symbolize many things, but in this particular case it strikes me as something of a grave marker, indicating that there’s a «tomb» nearby. And in this case the tomb is the box with the picture and Daryl’s note, but ultimately it points to the «empty tomb symbolism», or as I like to call it, three/tree/trunk symbolism. The X/cross on the door also supports the notion of this being a «tomb», and as I mentioned, I’m increasingly inclined to consider the whole cabin a «tomb». Let's see how the remaining episodes plays out, but yeah, pretty much, the wood cabin = tomb/trunk symbolism. And it’s blue as well, so «blue clue theory».
This brings me to the revelation I had when I first tried to make sense of this episode. I eventually realized that Daryl did NOT enter through the front door with the X the first time he went there. After my initial confusion I realized that there are in fact TWO doors leading into Leah’s cabin. One, the front door, is the one I’ve already talked about, it’s the one with the X/cross. The other, the back door, is a whole different story.
We don’t see this door at any other point of the episode. I think that’s intentional, and it supports the idea that not everything is what it seems. It suggests that perhaps we’re not seeing things as they unfold in chronological order. Or, it suggests that our perspective is skewed. Something is off, and for many of us who operates under the assumption that Leah is either partly or fully a hallucination, this IMO supports and strenghtens the hallucination theory.
Now, let’s talk about the back door. Unlike the front door, it has no X. Instead, it has two parallel lines, two panels placed vertically side by side. This is huge! Huge, my friends!
Because if you've read my «Shane’s 22 Necklace Theory», your know how obsessed I am with symbolism that can be synthesized to consisting of the numbers two and ten. The X and the two parallel lines on the two doors in Leah’s cabin, can be read as roman numerals X (ten) and II (two). And I’ll simply refer to the «Shane’s 22 Necklace» post because otherwise this will get too long, but the reason I’m obsessed with those numbers is because we see them over and over in TWD, and particularly in scenes that are heavy on other TD symbolism. The poster of the «Get Well Soon» clock in Beth’s room in Slabtown pointed to 10.10. But of course, on an analog clock, the number 2 (hours) is at the same place as the number 10 (minutes). And the show uses these numbers interchangeably. So when we see a 10, we also could interpret it as a two.
Confusing, I know. And to confuse us even more, the number 11, which consists of two one’s, can also be read as «2», because one plus one is two. Further, in roman numerals, «2» is written like this: «II». I’m not a math person and numbers exhaust me, however, this is not about math, it’s about breaking a code. Because ultimately, the numbers point to Noah’s t-shirt. Remember, the one with the stylized Heron bird and the words «one one». The bird is the same one as the one on the painting Beth passed in Still when she said «we made it» and foreshadowed her own survival. We also saw the same painting in 8x2 around Rick, and it was foreshadowed as I explain in Noah's t-shirt theory.
But, back to the X and the II on the doors in Leah’s cabin. Noah’s t-shirt theory originally came together when a scene from season 5 foreshadowed the reappearance of the blue heron painting in 8x2.
And later that season I realized that the «one one» on Noah's t-shirt also pointed towards episode 11, again because «11» consists of the numbers 1 and 1, or simply «one one».
(And I have zero idea of how to arrange the pics in a way that makes them look pretty, so apologies)
And that made a lot of sense, because in episode 8x11 we saw numerous other Beth symbols. We saw the radio, which is a Sirius symbol because of its connotation to Sirius Satellite Radio. We saw a serious (Sirius) piggybank, a callback to Beth and Daryl’s serious (Sirius) piggyback from Alone. Father Gabriel lost an eye, making him the new resident Sirius figure (a callback to the one eyed dog from Alone).
In season 9 episode 14, we saw Daryl and Michonne get fancy new scars, orchestrated by a very mean, manipulative lady and some seriously scary kids. The mean lady dies before the episode is over, however the scars remain. In 10x7 we saw Daryl’s back again, and we could clearly see his X shaped scar, but also a couple of parallel lines. At the time, I wondered if this was a way of foreshadowing something in episode 10x11 Morningstar, and now I fully believe that it was.
Remember how I said above that the 10x10 Slabtown clock could point to both episode 10x10 and 10x11 (because the numbers 11, 10 and 2 can be read as different variations of the same number). It later became clear that episode 10x11 was to be called “Morningstar”. To me, that pretty much confirmed that the scars was a foreshadow. In the Sirius/North Star master post from a few years ago I go through the Sirius symbolism carefully and in great detail, so I’ll just point to that post because this is already long enough. But a key element of the Sirius symbolism is that Sirius, the brightest star on the night sky, disappears for a while, and returns before dawn one day. Therefore, Sirius is sometimes referred to as the Morning Star (another Morning Star is Venus, which of course is not a star at all, it is a planet, and I have a Venus theory in the works as well, but for now, let’s focus on Sirius as the Morning Star). I’ve always interpreted Sirius symbolism as something that’s about to «return», because of how Sirius actually returns on the night sky after having been «gone».
So, I felt pretty certain that something significant was going to happen in 10x11. And it did. For starters, Eugene agreed to meet up with Stephanie over radio, so there’s a theme of meeting other communities, and communication (also, remember radios are Sirius symbols, and Alexandria’s radio originally came from the Radio Shack in 8x11, which I just talked about above)
But more importantly, we see Judith fixing Daryl’s vest. This is the big one, pay close attention to this. He had been lacking his right wing for some time, but Judith fixed it, and gave him a brand new blue (blue clues theory) wing.
To summarize, Daryl now has TWO wings (roman numerals II, «one one»), and Judith also decorated it with TEN stars. So that means, that in episode 10x11 Morningstar, foreshadowed by the «X «and the «II» scar on Daryls back, Daryl got a blue wing (remember the blue heron paintings, and the bluebird in a tree in 9x6) and now has a representation of the numbers X and II on both his skin on his back, but also on his vest.
Confused yet? Sure, I get it. Let’s see if I can compress it somewhat:
The blue heron painting from Still foreshadows Beth’s survival: «we made it»
Noahs’s heron/one one t-shirt foreshadows the blue heron behind Rick in 8x2
The X and II scars on Daryl’s back foreshadows the blue wing in 10x11 Morningstar
The wings on Daryl’s vest and the stars Judith added spells out TWO wings, TEN stars, or X stars and II wings
The X and the II on Leah’s door is a reference to episode 10x11 Morningstar
Morningstar is a reference to Sirius, which returns before dawn after having been «gone»
Sirius is a reference to something that returns.
Sirius represents Beth’s return, her “resurrection”
Which brings me back to the doors of Leah’s cabin. We know it was Dog who led Daryl to find the cabin in the first place, and I always interpret dogs as Sirius symbolism by default (see Sirius/North Star master post for details). The one eyed dog from Alone? Sirius symbolism. Daryl opened the door, believing that it was the dog returning. Big mistake. It was walkers. He lost Beth as a consequence. He even says in Find Me that he made a mistake. In the plot he talks about Leah, but IMO on a symbolical level he talks about how his mistake was to open the door in Alone and let the walkers in.
In Find Me, he barged in through the back door of Leah’s cabin, and it’s obvious to anyone who has ever watched Alone that we now have some super interesting parallel storytelling going on. There are dogs, there are notes. There are even refrigerators, for crying out loud. I’ve been screaming about cooler/frosty/ice/polar bear/ice cream symbolism for literal YEARS. And now we have TPTB placing my sweet baby boy Daryl on top of a freaking refrigerator in the middle of the woods while we watch his sanity getting eclipsed by a ghost of his past losses and failures. It stood out like a huge red flag already weeks before the episode even aired, when the “behind the scenes” photos dropped.
(Small side note on eclipses BTW: they pass. The sun is «just gone» for a little while. No worries, it’s not permanent)
Daryl entering Leah’s cabin through the back door also suggests to the audience that we’re not necessarily watching the events as they unfold in chronological order. One could even say we’re watching it unfold backwards. @angelthefirst1 has written a lot about loops and inverted storylines, check out her theories. @galadrieljones has written several great post about Find Me already, definitely take a look at her stuff. And as always @twdmusicboxmystery, our beloved fandom therapist and Theorista Extraordinaire, has already analyzed Find Me in every which way. @wdway contibutes with her eagle eyes and elephant memory. We all have our different takes on tings and we all track our individual favorite symbols but I think it’s safe to say that we agree on most of the basics of this episode.
For me, the highlight of this episode was when I discovered that the doors in Leah’s cabin are yet another representation of the numbers X and II. Because ultimately, the symbolism I’m tracking (see for example the Trunk Resurrection posts) are all about how the show over and over demonstrates to us that sometimes graves are empty. There are “back doors” (emergency exits so to speak), there are ways to get out of certain difficult situations (such as seemingly dying, but wait a minute, not quite dead after all, hello resurrection )
There are ways to open the «trunk», like Leah’s «buried» picture illustrated to us. It was first sitting on a table, then hidden (buried) and then it was just «gone». Does that remind you of anyone we know? The box with the picture and Daryl’s note are buried under the floorboards, and also hidden under a deer HIDE.
The fish on the wall marks the «grave» or «tomb», it functions as a grave marker here. We see another representation of that when Daryl, in one of the most hilarious scenes in the history of TWD, throws a fish at the wooden front door with the X. I think many of us saw that and immediately recognized it as a parallel to when he threw a bottle of water at Beth in Still, and I’ll elaborate more on that in a later post.
Mostly, I think we were all floored by the absolutely ridiculous amounts of Still/Alone parallels. Dialogue parallels, anti-parallels, asymmetrical parallels (yeah I made up that term), visual parallels, symbolism parallels, inverted parallels. I don’t think there is a single word of dialogue in Find Me that’s not parallel to something from Still/Alone. It shall be very interesting to see how this story continues.

Ties Between FTWD, TWB and the Maggie/Negan Spinoff?
@galadrieljones:
I saw the ask about the Maggie/Negan spin-off and I do agree, it feels like a mystery. With Hershel being abducted, I find it interesting that we have that information but literally nothing else. It makes me think they want us to connect it to what’s currently going on in Fear.
Will it be airing at the same time as Fear?
If so I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to set something up in terms of tensions between them. I’m trying to remember if there are any characters connected to Manhattan. We only know that the WB endlings have a faction in NY state, but not NYC.
@twdmusicboxmystery:
Interesting! I hadn’t thought of connecting the Maggie spin-off directly to Fear, but that’s a great point! 👍🏻
I’ve thought about TWB too, as I said in the Ask. Even tho it’s NY state vs. NYC, so still think it’s a small enough area that the character paths could cross. And too much of a coincidence to think they’re not setting something up there.
After all, if Morgan could randomly stumble onto Daryl and Aaron in S5, who happened to know the exact guy he was looking for, no reason Maggie and Negan couldn’t encounter Iris and Elton. 😉 Here’s hoping! 🙏🏻
@wdway:
It's so funny guys because I've been thinking about this for the last few days and then this morning I read your ask, @twdmusicboxmystery, about TWD:DC Maggie/Negan's spin-off and plan on bring it up to you guys but other things got in the way. So this evening when I checked my phone I got excited when I saw that you guys had started to discuss it.
Surprise, surprise I have a few thoughts on the subject. The initial thing that I've been thinking about is the order in which tptb are airing the spin-offs. Earlier this week Fears final season part A air date has been moved until May 14 with 6 instead of 8 episodes which put the last episode in the first block ending on June 18th.
In the Comicbook article announcing the change date it said that Maggie/Negan spin-off TWD:DC would follow Fear in June. Since they're making a big deal about the spinoffs I can't imagine they would air Maggie and Negan's beginning episode on the same night as the last block episode of Fear so that means it would start the following Sunday on June 25th. 6 episodes would mean it would finish on July 30th.
San Diego Comic-Con this year is July the 20th through the 23rd. I tried to find some dates for panels but it only said that TWD's last Comic-Con was July of 2022.
Initially this surprised me because I cannot believe after all these years and what a big deal Comic-Con has always been that The Walking Dead Universe would not be represented. Then I realized that it is in how you ask the question and in fact the TWD original show from the comic did end and had its last Comic-Con in 2022 but since I didn't quite know how to phrase the panel question with all the different spin-offs. I don't know how they would group it together because I cannot imagine them passing up such a huge opportunity to promote the TWD universe spinoffs.
I'm going to speculate that this might be one of the reasons they push the dates back so that since Dead City will not finish its run until the 30th of July then they can still promote it during Comic-Con along with Fear and the other upcoming spinoffs.
From here on this truly is speculation but I don't believe that they would want to come back with Fear Part B directly after Dead City. That would only be a 6 week break.
We also know that the Daryl Dixon spin-off will air in 2023 so my best guess is Fear series final 6 episodes will air beginning September 3rd and end October 6th or start back on September 10th and end on October 15th.
Here's the thing I got excited about is looking at the dates. If Fear ends on the 15th that would mean that the Daryl Dixon spin-off will begin on October 22! That right 10/22!!!
Is it just me or does that date seem like a likelihood and a meaningful one? With the number 22 showing up in s5e8 Coda on a police car
and then later on a door in s1 of TWB, on the sailboat with Michonne and Virgil in s10e13 What We Become and in s11e21 Outpost, on another door in s11e23 Family in the scene where Daryl is carrying Judith who has been shot a replay of Coda.
It just seems like too much of a possible coincidence that they would not use that date for Daryl spinoff.
The other thing that I wanted to mention to you guys I do think there could be a possibility of Maggie and Negan's spin-off tying in with TWB since both spin-off's are set in NY state. It's just that I'm getting more of a vibe that Fear will give us something that will make sense or tie into the storyline of Herschel's kidnapping. We last saw Morgan and Madison searching for Morgan's daughter because she had been kidnapped. It just seems like too much of a lead in for Maggie and Negan's search for Herschel imo.
The other thing is and this is something I would love for us to discuss in more detail is how they left Al and her partner Isobel. They left the audience with the fact that they were in the Smoky Mountains and we know that Maggie was in the Knoxville area which is near the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. There again it seems to be a natural lead in to the people who are targeting Maggie.
Just a few more things for thought.
One more 22 that I forgot to add to the above list. Series episode 22 was s3e3 Walk With Me. The episode where we find out that Merle and Andrea are still alive.
@galadrieljones:
I love all the date speculation. I really enjoy thinking about how these disparate pieces are going to come together in small but potent ways. I feel strongly too that what we learn in Fear must inform Maggie and Negan’s search for Hershel. There’s no way that what’s happening with Morgan isn’t on a crash course for what’s about to happen to Hershel.
The thing about Madison’s return is, that even tho I don’t love her character, her role is pretty compelling. All this stuff with kidnapped kids, and how it subtly informs situations, barely hinted at the flagship, it makes me excited for how it connects to Beth, as the nanny, the caretaker.
The episode Inmates always comes to mind, how her only goal is to find the children. At the end of Too Far Gone, the reason she isn’t on the bus and ends up with Daryl in the first place is because she bravely went back for the kids. It’s her first true heroic attempt, even as she is not successful.
It’s part of why I always compare her to the Biblical Rachel, who was the farmer Laban’s youngest daughter, beautiful, and who struggled to have her own children but who was a great maternal protector of her ppl. It really makes the Jacob/Daryl and Leah in disguise thing sing for me.
I mean Rick is the most important character in the franchise and Beth took care of his children. She was like part of his family. She was a quietly important character.
Also, I’m glad you brought up Al and Isobel. Remember too how Denis from WB told a story about his partner early on when he was a soldier in the CRM going awol in the Smokies. I remember doing the math on the coordinates for Isobel’s cabin and determining that it was only about 30mi from Knoxville.
This makes the Smokies a legit mention in all three shows. Maggie pinpoints her time in Knoxville to a couple summers ago, which could be a nod to the time difference with Fear.
I am purely speculating that possibly Al and Isobel were in hiding in Maggie’s community, which was then targeted by the CRM, as you suggested. We’ve also speculated that possibly Georgie has a CRM bounty on her head, or is some sort of CRM escapee. We know from WB that the CRM uses walkers to end their threats.
If this is the case, Maggie would just think a horde moved through. She wouldn’t know it was the CRM. It would just seem like things keep going wrong. Maybe Al and Isobel stay with them and move from place to place with them. Maybe they don’t even realize it’s the CRM at first, until whatever happened before Meridian. Then they take off. Maggie never mentions Al or Isobel, but we know she lost a lot of ppl. She might just assume they’re dead. Or maybe they went with Georgie out west.
This is why I feel we may see the Reapers again. Why they gave us that purposeful zoom into Michael Turner’s face. Maybe the Reapers were bounty hunters for the CRM for a time. Per the timeline it’s feasible that Leah was with Daryl when Knoxville went down, which is why she goes easier on her in some ways.
Remember too there’s this weird tension with Maggie and Michael Turner. He is the guy wearing the super classic reaper mask. He has it in for her specifically and follows her into the mall.
There’s tons of focus on him as the guy who throws his scythe at her at the end of that bizarre opening sequence in Hunted. Maybe (and this is huge speculation lol) he will reappear at some point, in a flashback, or in Fear as pertaining to Al and Isobel, and that’s why they were so certain to show us a close-up of his face in Rendition.
I spent a long time trying to find out who the actor is who plays Michael Turner and I could never find anything. Wonder why!
@twdmusicboxmystery:
Love all the discussion, Ladies! One thing I think TD has always been really good at is figuring out the logic of how/why tptb would do a thing. I honestly think that's why we're right so often. After all the stuff about kids being taken, how could Dead City NOT be about that, you know? And I think all your logic above is on point. 👍
@wdway:
The long ramble that I did about the possible air dates for Fear and Daryl Dixon spin-off I feel should be combined with what I wrote you @twdmusicboxmystery, in a comment for an "ask" posted the other day about my theory of why they bumped Rick and Michonne's spin-off until 2024.
A large part of the general audience doesn't seem to be able to make connections of how these spin-off's will all tie together to lead into a bigger story of a war with the CRM. I get why a lot of people cannot see this coming because for whatever reason they have not watched Fear since Morgan moved over to that series to slowly lay out over several seasons the storyline of the introduction of the CRM in the TWD Universe.
Even though The World Beyond was billed as a closer look into the CRM many viewers couldn't get pass the storyline featuring 4 inexperienced teenagers on a quest to New York to the Civic Republic Scientific Research community. They had little patience for the teenagers and what on the surface didn't seem to relate to the faster more action packed original TWD series.
My belief is that all of the spin-off's will eventually merge together into a new non-comic book based series. TWD Part 2 or TWD the Last Act. Whatever they decide to call it it'll be a continuation of the story after the end of the comic era with many of the characters from the original series that are not included in the upcoming spin-off's.
From Facebook:
Here's my theory about them pushing the Rick and Michonne spin off until '24.
First I agree what you said about wanting to focus the big story for 2023 being the Daryl/Beth storyline. The word epic has been thrown around a lot for both spin-off's so I don't think they want to put them necessarily back to back. I believe they want to establish or keep that fall Walking Dead series air timeline. You have people who have come so accustomed to having TWD during October and November and it is not a wise move to leave it open to movies or something random and people get used to looking at other networks during that time period.
Here's the real reason I think R/M spin-off has been moved to next year. The R/M spin-off should be able to finish their filming by late spring so they will have time to edit it and then it will air probably in February of "24 when TWD would normally have their second half of their season.
So they would be keeping their fall and winter TWD programming format. And this is where I think the long range plan is being set in place coming the fall of '24 we will have the spin offs coming together for the new series with the return of of many of others characters that are still at the CW/AZ.
I think a lot of the actors will have a nice break from after their spinoffs are done and the new series comes together. They can go and do their individual other jobs and still come back for a new revamped TWD that will have all the beloved characters that are still alive and will not have to work from the comic book. The things that people were so weary of having new characters without enough air time to care about them will no longer be an issue. I'm sure it will be a good size cast but not overly so. Filming for the new revamped TWD series would probably start next spring of 2024 and air that fall.
@galadrieljones:
All really good points, @wdway. It’s so easy to forget how much of the CRM undercurrent has been just outright missed by the GA. Even I initially dismissed WB till you all suggested I should watch it. It’s not the type of show I would normally watch, but I wanted to watch it just to understand the foundation of what was going on. So like are there ppl who saw that Rick coda and were just completely confused, or…?

eight people i’d like to get to know better.
ONE / ( ALIAS / NAME ) - viking!
TWO / ( BIRTHDAY ) - november 22, 1994
THREE / ( ZODIAC SIGN ) - scorpio
FOUR / ( HEIGHT ) - 170cm
FIVE / ( HOBBIES ) - writing (obviously), video games, watching tv shows / movies, drawing, listening to music.
SIX / ( FAVORITE COLOR ) - black, green
SEVEN / ( FAVORITE BOOKS ) - the harry hole series by jo nesbø
EIGHT / ( LAST SONG LISTENED TO ) - la-bibbida-bibba-dum (on broadway) - bad lip reading
NINE / ( LAST FILM WATCH ) - star wars: return of the jedi
TEN / ( INSPIRATION FOR MUSE ) - well, the general inspiration was because i recently rewatched most of twd, so i just got a lot of muse for certain characters. rick and andrea kinda inspires me bc they’re not normally the type of muses i’d choose to personally write ?? and i like the challenge and getting that change of pace from the types of characters i usually write. philip, i got inspired to write because, well... i used to absolutely hate the governor, ngl. but rewatching the episodes, i tried to really like... focus a lot more on his character to see if i could understand why he was the way he was, and.... man oh man did i really start to find his character absolutely fascinating and complex and heartbreaking and i just knew i had to explore more of his character bc rip he went from being one of my least fav characters (not just in twd but of all time) to one of my top 5 favorite characters of all time and i can’t believe i haven’t written him sooner. brian, i got the inspiration to write bc i started reading the novel ‘rise of the governor’ and i remembered in the show, philip mentions his brother briefly, so i was like “oh shit, now i got an idea for how the show!version of his brother might’ve been like.” and then i started playing around with the idea of philip and brian being twins and i just kinda went with it tbh. negan, i ... well, my inspiration is kinda on and off with him. i tried to write negan before, when only s7 and s8 had come out, but i just couldn’t pull it off because i felt like the writing in the show was a little too over-the-top-forced (mind you the comics are even more so in that regard,) with negan just being a loud ass swearing asshole all the time, so i just felt like i couldn’t do him justice, that he’d be too ooc if i tried writing him, because i wanted to write more sides of him than just that ?? but then season 9 and the first half of season 10 aired, and the writing for negan became a lot more... well, you get to see more of who he actually is underneath that very loud front he put up in s7 and s8 and i just really wanted to explore more of that ?? although i still feel like i’m gonna end up disappointing people bc i don’t write him as this constantly witty, loud, swearing asshole, hence why i don’t currently have a whole lot of muse for him. ( that and my muse for philip kinda overpowers him. apparently i can’t write two bad guys at the same time pffft.) and lastly, kenny, my inspiration was; this is a flawed man who’s lost so so much but who’s still trying to do the right thing and this character breaks my heart but also fills it because he’s just...... trying his damn best to protect the people he cares about, he’s loyal, he’s not afraid to speak his mind, he’s stubborn and caring and despite constantly being beaten down and losing people, he still finds the strength to keep going, and just hhhhh listen man, kenny is great. plus the writers didn’t really do him justice (staring at you season 2 and 3) and i was like “he deserves better than this and i’m gonna give it to him”
ELEVEN / ( STORY BEHIND URL ) - it’s not really that big of a story. basically, i write multiple muses, so i wanted a url that describes them all. i figured, they are all survivors on the show. what describes all of them is that they lived through the initial outbreak. they are multiple people, so ‘us’. they’re survivors, so ‘living’. but i think the url usliving was taken, so i settled with uslivin instead.
