maybe it’s because it’s “too obvious” but im surprised how few readings I’ve seen of the Substance (2024) that discuss the themes of addiction and substance (ha) use & abuse.
in moderation you can use the substance to become a better, more fun, easier, happier version of yourself. then you realize you no longer want to be who you are when you’re not on the substance. then taking the same dose that used to be enough before isn’t enough anymore, so you want to take more, and just a little bit more couldn’t hurt, right? so you start to take even more. but this is only taking away from sober you, which is painful and difficult and even scarier than what compelled you to take it in the first place, so of course you can’t stop now. now you want to take even more, you NEED to take even more. sober life becomes harder and harder to bear, especially compared to how much easier everything is on the substance. now you’re not only using it to enjoy that feeling anymore, you’re using it to hide from what you’re turning into without it, from what you’ve already turned into.
every minute that you’re sober is spent counting down the days until you can use again, and the ends of being high are spent dreading going back. the sober self is upset and jealous at how irresponsible the high self is. the high self is upset at how much of a buzzkill the sober self is, and wishes they could exist on their own, without requiring their sober tether to existence. but the sober and high selves are the same person, you are one, and you become jealous and angry at yourself for ruining your own life in a vain attempt to become an impossible version of yourself that you most desire to be.
you want so badly to have all—and only all—of the best parts that you milk yourself dry, until you end up with all—and nothing but all—of the bad parts. by the time you truly feel that you have indeed lost everything and know you need to stop, the damage is already done, and there is no going back. you wish you had stopped at the first chance, you wish you had never started to begin with. and even then for many people the only way to deal with this terrifying, painful reality is to use even more, because you have made this terrifying, painful life without your substance feel unliveable, even scarier yet than what had made you use in the first place. there is nothing left to do but to hide from your own life, and the only ways to do this are to stop, to love yourself and take care of the person that you are now… or to keep taking more and more, using until there is truly nothing left, not even yourself.

Top 10 Scariest Color/Gene Combos (Part 1/2)
Long post... Be prepared for a fright under the cut 😈
10. Lead Tide
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Environmental contamination. What are we doing to our oceans. Tidelord would be disappointed. And also full of lead. (Have dragons invented microplastics yet?) Anyways do not drink these guys especially if you are a baby or something like that.
9. Fire Wasp
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Many people are afraid of bees, and many more are afraid of wasps. While both may or may not be able to sting you (depending on species), and one is ultimately a subtype of the other, even people who think every bug is so cool and so cutes might get scared if they had mastery over the element of fire (and can still sting you). I think if a wasp could burn you, it would hurt a lot, and they might also be impervious to fire and smoke as a deterrent. I suppose they could just have a particularly "spicy" venom instead? Good thing there aren't any species of wingless wasp (ant) known for a fiery venom that are prone to being highly invasive in much of the United States and abroad! (Editor's Note: Fire ants are real and can hurt you. For most people in most situations, this is usually an inconvenience more than anything.)
8. Orca Thylacine
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A hybrid between an orca and a thylacine would probably be a capable predator on land and at sea, as well as tolerate a broad range of climates. Furthermore, it would have both the motive and the intelligence to enact revenge on humanity or whatever. Has science gone too far?
7. Pumpkin Phantom
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh no, it's the scary Halloween guy! With an epithet like "phantom," you can be sure this undead dragon is down for some mischief and haunting. Maybe even some shrieking and terrorizing! It may not be the scariest concept on the list, but it isn't for lack of trying. If rates of fatal decapitation spike in your area, we know who to blame...
6. Shadow Clown
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look out! It's Problems the Evil Shadow Clown, from those TikTok animations! Or maybe it's actually Problems the Regular Shadow Clown, who knows? But both clowns and the dark are scary to many people, so a clown *of* darkness? That is probably the scariest thing someone on Earth could imagine. Anyways I'm pretty sure this guy has some sort of Weapons or Dark Powers regardless. (You can also make this entry a joke about juggalos, if you want.)

Recently i had a situation with the police where they ended up handcuffing and restraining me
And thats really scary to think about, that if i have no adult with me whilst i leave my house situations like that can and will happen because i am low masking nonverbal and prone to meltdowns,
just my normal just my me can end up in being handcuffed and restrained, im not in any crisis or anything, this is who i naturally am and if i have no adult with me im so venerable i can end in being handcuffed?
This makes me so scared
Im a 14 year old girl who had a teddy and they treated me like a criminal, just after they had put on a youtube video for toddlers on.
Am i a criminal or an incompetent teenager with the mind of a toddler or am i mentally ill person? For just existing as a nonverbal higher support needs person
They took me being unable to talk and communicate as me not engaging and resisting support, so scary to happen and so scary to think how easily it can happen again
Such a big realisation moment of what can happen if i have no adult with me outside helping me

Honestly I think most people on here are completely spineless and just listen to whoever can string the best sequence of progressive words along at this point. It's blowing my mind that people are acting like the new article's content is completely different from the allegations that came out literally half a year ago and that nobody believed. I genuinely think that most of the misconceptions and calls to not interact with the allegations back then came from intellectual laziness and refusing to listen to the podcast for more than 5 minutes.
The women recounted with their own voices the abuse that was done to them on the Tortoise podcast. It was just as graphic as the recent article is but with some of the new details missing. All it gathered was a post with 3k+ notes saying it was a radfem conspiracy to interfere with the UK elections and general indifference. I'm sorry but at some point you guys have to realize that bad people can still say and platform the truth and that being a leftist doesn't make you a good person. Treating SA victims like they were politically motivated liars or untrustworthy people for half a year and then doing a 180 about the exact same information is crazy.
To clear things up about the podcast:
- It is not true that the journalists support Neil Gaiman, distrust the victims, claim it wasn't rape or whatever theories came out about this. The reason they read the whatsapp messages and talked about contradicting testimonies, or if it was at all possible for Neil Gaiman to think the acts were consented, was to point out there are legally grey areas and how that plays into court rulings favoring men and why Scarlett's case was not taken seriously by the police.
- The journalists do not use this podcast to spread anti-bdsm views. They are very clear that bdsm is different from what Neil Gaiman did. The only instances close to this is when one of the interviewees says women agreeing to being degraded is a male fantasy. This is brought up by someone they interviewed for like 5 minutes total, and they then expand on that sentiment by saying it depends on the context and the power dynamics at play. The other time is in the first few minutes of the first episode when they bring up laws about bodily injuries during sex and literally say they do not want it to be about policing what people do in their bedrooms.
- The content of the podcast itself is not TERFy or transphobic and they do not even mention trans people in all this. They don't focus on anybody other than Gaiman and the victims too really.
I'm not saying people shouldn't be suspicious of news outlets just that at some point it'd be good to actually interact with what they're saying before claiming the victims shouldn't be trusted. You all really sounded like every typical twitter guy who is "scared to go outside because he might get falsely accused" but rebranded as a lefty by saying we need to wait for a trial and shit like this. Anyway we all know this will be quickly forgotten as is almost every sexual crime a famous man commits.

I think the only real happy ending scenarios in Mouthwashing are where Anya doesn’t keep the pregnancy. Like not just not keeping the baby but not caring it to term.
In all the scenarios I’ve seen it’s always about how she regains her automy while living with what happened to her with the baby as a representation of learning to move past it but it’s cheap. She also doesn’t want the pregnancy, she says it directly right before she kills herself. Keeping it would forever tie her to him in her mind as an awful little thing that she would also have the guilt of hating. This hypothetical child would have done nothing itself to garner her hate but it is of the person she hates. The person that tried to strip her of her personhood.
I think the focus of a happy end in Mouthwashing bypasses the point there was never an easy happy way or end out of this. In a world where Curly did something, Anya still has to grapple with her pregnancy and being trapped on the ship. The rape never happened? Jimmy still would’ve inevitably lost it and tried to do something to escape any responsibility he was going back to. They were all still getting laid off despite if Curly told them or not. There is no way this ends happy or even bittersweet for most of them because of circumstances before and after we know of or are alluded to.
The question posed should really be about what would someone do to reclaim agency? To make someone understand how they feel/felt through expressing what they weren’t to before?
