Totally random facts:
-Teeth have a strange smell when they're ground to dust
-Some people have extra nerves in their bottom back teeth
-Anesthetic can burn if its delivered too quick
Dentist stuff in tags, dont read if you dislike the dentist or fear it. Seriously.

I had to get up at 7am so I could be at the dentist by 8, but I was actually excited to go. Yeah, I know, that's weird. Bear with me. For months now, I haven't been able to chew on my left side. First it was because I had a crown that kept coming off. Then it was because I had a hole where the crown used to be. Do you have any idea how annoying that is? Besides just having to be careful when I'd rather be enjoying my food, it also meant I couldn't move a hot bite over to that side. I haven't noticed it causing any TMJ problems, but it certainly could and I know those can be Very Bad News.
So today, after a painful (and messy!) extraction followed by months of healing, then the actual implant and more months to heal, today I finally got the actual new crown that literally screws onto the implant base with a super cute little torque wrench. And I can chew on both sides again! I know I'm showing the banality of middle age (if I can even call it that any more), but this is the biggest quality-of-life improvement since I discovered THC gummies.
I started the day with a dentist visit, and that makes today a good day.

Dental appointment was a success. Cried from anxiety but it was okay. The two ladies I saw were very sweet and funny. Now they’re trying to figure out where the hell to send me for IV sedation, because our location doesn’t do it, the closest location won’t accept any more adults (??? I’m not going to be a patient there, it’s just a referral from a sister location for one appointment, what’s the problem?), and the next closest is Mississauga. Well shit, if no one will take me to Mississauga for top surgery, they sure as fuck aren’t taking me there for dental work.
Fantastic Canadian dental care. Don’t have the necessities anywhere nearby. Like why is there no sedative dental care in a massive city? They also want to do two crowns and idk how I’m supposed to do that, I don’t have $2000+ per tooth. Hopefully I can convince them to either do composite fillings, or a really low cost payment plan for crowns.

tomorrow i'm gonna go back to the dentist :(
been going back there frequently to get cavities filled and well, my 1 1/2 root canal lol
i got a bunch to fill and get some new crowns, and overall not excited but it'll be good to save my teeth and not be in pain when they decay to that point
long story on how this occurred but trapwire is giving me reassurance in the best way he can, he's a big bot but likes to pet, just let me chew at his claws and climb him
you don't always need words to connect!

I've had a few. Mostly they've been boring. Just a long process of them working a little while, swapping out one instrument for another, working for a while longer, etc. There was one that became unexpectedly exciting, though. I cannot stress enough that this was a very unusual occurrence. The oral surgeon had already said I was presenting her with an exceptional challenge, and she has seen a lot of teeth.
You see, I have deep roots. In most contexts that would be a good thing, but not this one. I specifically remember the surgeon and her assistant commenting back and forth during prep, like "are you sure you measured that right" and "that must be a record for a bicuspid" and so on. As it turned out she couldn't even get to one part of the root the first time, because my roots are not just deep but complex. We had to use the super-high-res tomography machine to get an accurate picture of the "route" to that part (she compared it to Google Maps) and resume another day.
So, second day she gets in, and it's the expected yawner of a procedure ... until it isn't. Suddenly bright, searing pain that makes me sit bolt upright. Amazing that I didn't snap off the instrument or get cut or something. Surgeon was so apologetic, I felt like I should console her instead of the other way around. Turns out that deep roots means the anesthetic doesn't get all the way down there. Neither does anticoagulant, but that's another story.
But you know what? Even with that it really wasn't so bad. Yes, there was one moment, then it was over. And it's incredibly unlikely that it would happen to anyone who's less of a mutant than I am. As I said, I've had multiple and they're mostly boring. Be prepared, certainly, but don't sweat it. Oral surgeons of all types are amazing people in my experience, very empathetic and very very focused on doing everything they can to make the process as painless as possible. I seriously almost enjoy working with them. Almost. 😉
I just saw your posts about dentistry and finally managed to see a dentist for the first time today since 2008 due to major health and financial issues, and they told me that I'm likely going to need a root canal on one of my teeth. I've never had one done, but my mom has ages ago, and I'm terrified of the idea of them. What are they like? How many people are involved? How long does it take? Etc. TY in advance!
So it's going to depend on the dentist!
The dentist I went to who placed my gold crowns worked solo in his office and didn't even have a hygienist; he usually took between one and two hours with a return visit to seat the crown.
The last root canals I had took quite a bit longer and I'm now seeing a dentist who calls in a visiting endodontist for root canals; in that office it's 2-3 people involved, but usually two, the dentist doing the drilling and filling and an assistant who helps with suction and cleanup during the procedure.
The process is basically:
Dentist drills out the center of the tooth and around the outside of the tooth, making it into a smaller shape than before and making it hollow
Dentist drills/files out the nerves (the roots) and removes infected tissue
Dentist cleans and fills the nerves with an inert material
Dentist seals the hole in the tooth with epoxy and seats a crown (may be permanent but more likely is a temporary)
If it's a temporary, it's in your mouth for a few weeks while the dentist waits for your permanent crown to arrive; then you go back and they remove the temporary crown and there is some minor filing/drilling/testing as they seat the crown and adjust the bite, then they will cement the crown in place with an epoxy that binds it to the tooth stump
They will use a lot of anesthetic for this because it's a procedure that is extremely painful without anesthetic. If they start drilling and it is painful, let them know right away. If it starts hurting after they have been drilling, let them know right away.
If everything goes well I generally don't find root canals to be as horrifying as a lot of people do. There are a few ways they can go wrong, most of which involve the roots being more complicated than expected or having adverse reactions to anesthetic. If the roots are complicated it's usually just going to take longer than anticipated. Sometimes it also means the roots are deeper than where a typical anesthetic shot will be helpful, but as discussed in the other post your dentist should have multiple levels of anesthetic to help you get through it.
But since you are worried about it you should definitely call your dentist's office ahead of time! Let them know that this is your first root canal and you want to know about the procedure before you're actually in the chair and ask them what the process will look like at their office.
If you are working with your dentist and they are managing your pain during the procedure it may be a *long* process but it shouldn't be a horrible process.
Good luck!

Do you wanna see a nasty little bit of my actual jaw bone, which I guess broke off or was damaged under the gum and died, and slowly pushed itself from my jaw through the delicate gum tissue over the course of the last three weeks or so, and then finally was loose enough last night to pry out?
Y'know, just for curiosity's sake.

I'm in so much less pain now than I have been for the last fortnight. What a vicious little piece of me.

Fun fact about me: when I was a kid, I was one of those kids who’s baby teeth grew in late asf and thus wouldn’t budge by the time that my adult teeth started growing in(so I had to have my baby teeth manually removed by a dentist sequentially when each adult tooth grew in >m<). But that’s not the fun fact!!! This is atleast a little common to some capacity I think!!!
Where it actually gets interesting is the fact that I wasn’t born with one of my adult teeth at all(if you didn’t know, babies are born with both their baby teeth and adult teeth ready to go in their gums), and thankfully the corresponding baby tooth never became wobbly or damaged. So. As I grew up, and my jaw changed etc, in comparison to my adult teeth, I now have this silly little smol baby tooth hanging out there too

I was at the dentist today getting a temporary crown, and failing to comprehend the eroticism of a woman holding sharp objects in one's mouth, I told her that the temp crown was at the right height when in actuality it was too tall.
It feels rather uncomfortable and annoying but due to my hubris my teeth will be stuck this way till next week.
