Recently, I’ve been very fascinated with Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza’s filmography and, yes, a lot of this fascination has to do with Agatha All Along but also when I got to watch their newer works outside of the A3. It was the work and performances they did that grabbed my brain.

I’m not going to discount the eroticism that’s inherent in their work because that’s a large part that they’ve deliberately included. It’s something both actresses wanted to explore with a lot of truth and messiness that entailed.

Aubrey Plaza became a breakout star from her work in Parks and Recreation and for several years Aubrey’s been doing roles that are more or less April Ludgate in a different font.

But somewhere in between Parks and Rec and White Lotus Aubrey started to branch out from the roles she usually took to someone who can do dramatic, emotionally raw, and honest performances.

And, I think it’s no coincidence that both Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza heap praise on John Cassavetes' Woman Under the Influence.

This is what Kathryn Hahn has to say about the movie:

In high school, when she was home recovering from mono, she watched the John Cassavetes film A Woman Under the Influencefor the first time and was riveted by what she would later call Gena Rowlands’s “open-faced sandwich, raw, no-meat-on-the-bone” performance, she says. “Just the naked nerve endings of her.” It set the bar for what Hahn wanted to do. And this is what Aubrey Plaza has to say about the movie and the Director-Actor partnerships of John Cassavetes and Gena Rowland:

“Gena Rowlands is one of my heroes. She and Cassavetes mean a lot to me, and the two have influenced my career and my understanding of acting in countless ways.”

Cassavetes followed his 1974 drama three years with the slightly spookier, more ephemeral tale of fame and paranoia, Opening Night. “I watched tons of Cassavetes films,” Plaza explains before sharing why Cassavetes' dark tale of a theatre production resonated with her, “but this one really stood out and spoke to my character’s situation and the psychologically messy space between fiction and reality that you’re often in when you’re making a movie or putting on a show.”

TLDR, they’re just so fascinating and fascinated by Cassavetes movies.

I plan to watch A Woman Under the Influence but just from the trailer, I can see how this movie inspired both Hahn and Plaza.

Now, about German tv shows... If you look at my blog, you'll find posts about my recent discoveries: Tatort Saarbrücken, Polizeiruf (Vincent Ross' cases) and the last couple of seasons of SOKO Leipzig.

Yes, they are cop shows. But! The two male leads and the two female leads in Tatort Saarbrücken are highly shippable, and there's a ton of fic! Lots of AUs, too, if crime series are not your thing. The same goes for Polizeiruf: Vincent Ross is a genderqueer police detective and it's gotten a lot of attention from fic authors :)

Last but not least, my beautiful beloved, Moritz Brenner, Leipzig police detective and queer extraordinaire... Unfortunately, he mostly shows up in fic as secondary character in cross-overs with Tatort Saarbrücken and Polizeiruf. But those fics are amazing.

His loyalty never wavers and he makes sure she knows it too.
