La tortuga laúd, también conocida como tortuga baula o cardón (Dermochelys coriacea), es la tortuga marina más grande del mundo; pueden alcanzar una longitud de hasta 2,3 metros y pesar más de 600 kilogramos lo que las hace incluso más grandes que algunos osos polares. La tortuga laúd no tiene un caparazón duro con placas. En cambio, su piel está cubierta por una gruesa capa de piel coriácea, similar al cuero, que le da su nombre común. Son omnívoras y comen una variedad de alimentos, incluyendo medusas, peces, calamares, algas y crustáceos. Son las únicas tortugas marinas que pueden comer medusas, ya que su piel coriácea las protege de las picaduras. Pasan la mayor parte del tiempo nadando en mar abierto, son buceadoras profundas y pueden alcanzar profundidades de hasta 1.000 metros. Alcanzan la madurez sexual entre los 15 y los 30 años de edad, las hembras ponen sus huevos en playas de arena. Un solo nido puede contener hasta 100 huevos. Se encuentra en peligro de extinción. Las principales amenazas para su supervivencia son la pesca accidental, la contaminación marina, la pérdida de hábitat y el cambio climático. Las ilustraciones se publicaron en el libro Los Secretos de los Animales que hace parte de una completa colección con la que la entidad realiza una hermosa labor educativa en miles de hogares campesinos de Colombia. También participaron en este proyecto: la ilustradora de la fundación Carolina Bernal Camargo y el Señor OK desde su estudio de aquel entonces Zorro Negro.

Hatchling Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina) that I moved off of a busy road onto the Lynn Valley Trail the other night. It's generally advised not to relocate turtles but it is advised to move them safely away from vehicle traffic. Scores of Endangered Green Sea Turtles Hatch On Galapagos Islands

Dozens of the endangered green sea turtles began their journey to the ocean after hatching in nesting sites on several beaches of Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands. The natural phenomena was highlighted on Wednesday by the Galapagos National Park (PNG), which is carrying out a project involving the island’s population to monitor and protect the hatching of the eggs, reports Efe news.

“So far the eggs of six nests have hatched on the beaches of Puerto Villamil” on Isabela Island, the largest and westernmost of the archipelago, the PNG said in a statement. The park added that they were the eggs of green sea turtles, a species classified as endangered and included on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Isabela Island’s youth have been involved during the last few weeks in the nesting process of the green turtles, who often go to these islands to lay their eggs. They have been monitoring the process on beaches near Isabela Island’s Puerto Villamil village, where they have marked and protected 11 nests.
