Prehistoric Mirrors from Turkey, c.6,000 BCE: these are the oldest manufactured mirrors in the world, dating back to about 8,000 years ago; they were meticulously crafted from pieces of obsidian
Above: two of the obsidian mirrors from Çatalhöyük (Turkey); this pair was found buried together back in 2012
At least eight of these obsidian mirrors have been discovered at a Neolithic site known as Çatalhöyük, which is located in Turkey. All of the mirrors date back to roughly 8,000 years ago, and each one was crafted from a chunk of obsidian (volcanic glass) that was knapped into the shape of a disc and then meticulously polished with progressively finer abrasives until a smooth, slightly convex surface had been developed.
Some of these mirrors can still produce remarkably clear reflections, even after 8,000 years.

The largest intact Roman mosaic floor discovered in Turkey, dating back to the sixth century, is a remarkable find. The mosaic, found in Antakya, covers an impressive 1200 square meters and features unique geometric shapes and non-repeating figures, likely designed for a public space.
The mosaic has a rippling effect caused by earthquakes in 526 and 528 AD, but it does not create the impression of a giant blanket. Despite the earthquakes, the mosaic remains intact and unbroken, a testament to its resilience and the skill of its creators.

Global Crafts: Turkish Woven Rugs
Last week, I posted an informational blog entry about the absolutely gorgeous craft of Jordanian Mosaic Art. But Jordan wasn’t the only place I was fortunate enough to visit on my trip! Along with some Jordanian mosaics, I came back with another souvenir from the second part of my trip: a gorgeous Turkish rug.
On my first full day in Istanbul, I decided to slip out of the hotel on my own – my travel companions were all still jetlagged – to go and see some of the famous sights. As I was approaching the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, a gentleman approached me and offered to escort me. I know you’re absolutely not supposed to allow this, especially as a female traveler, but I am a bit tragically nonconfrontational. To his credit, he did end up taking me right to the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, and front gate of Topkapi Palace and even up to a restaurant balcony where you can get phenomenal pictures of all of the above!
He then took me to his shop, which included an upstairs area absolutely full of gorgeous Turkish rugs! There was even a loom set up off to the side where I was able to see a work-in-progress – and didn’t my jaw just drop, as someone who completed their first ever weaving project just a few months back. As he was showing off rugs of all sizes and colors, he started to tell me a bit more about the tradition and techniques used to make them.
