OKAY. the magnus fucking institute, manchester.
worm tracks all over the archives' floor?? hello??? this institute burnt down in '99 and archives verse jane prentiss attacked in 2016, but. that can't NOT be connected, right?
redcanary said there were no papers left, but sam and alice found some! completely rotten, but they are there. why are most of the papers gone but not all?
from her reaction to the institute being brought up in magp 02 and 05, it seems like alice didn't know about sam's history with the place before and he filled her in some time recently.
"I want to know what was happening, why they chose us… why they didn’t choose me. Maybe find the bit where everything started to go wrong." say more right now mr khalid. I saw your scores on that spreadsheet, I know you got the best grades in unethical child psych experiments. don't give up hope yet! I'm sure you still have plenty of time to become one with some kind of eldritch abomination!
beth eyre as [error]. okay, I know she was a voice in archives, but for the time being I am assuming this is not statement giver lucia wright from mag 130 with the steel chair. in the archives verse institute, the trapdoor in the archivist's office lead to the tunnels, but this institute isn't connected to old millbank prison. nevertheless, there was still a Person trapped under there. probably been there for the last 25 years. an old archivist, maybe? they're immortal, she could have just been chilling down there like the alexandrian archivist. but she also was deliberately locked in. she needed the key to get out. oops! we dug down too deep and released the Creature from below the earth!
#btw I'm assuming she/her for now for [error] just cause those are beth eyre's pronouns#tmagp#tmagp spoilers#marina marvels at life

Wait wait wait I'm putting pieces together
From TMA 198, Precipice:
MARTIN Hey, what happened here? Are you both okay? Where is everybody? GEORGIE [Upset] They came for them. Took them away. Like before. ARCHIVIST Oh, god. MARTIN Who’s ‘they’? GEORGIE The… things from the city. You know, the, the ones that serve that big eye.
Georgie and Melanie’s cult (including Celia) were attacked and taken away by the former Archivists who were guarding the Panopticon.
From TMAGP 30, Dead End Job:
ARCHIVIST AT LAST, IT IS MINE!
CELIA …and then the fearless one reached in and grasped me, tore me out, leaving my story to fall away like autumn leaves…
THE ARCHIVIST IS FROM THE TMA WORLD TOO
It came over to this world with Celia when it was kidnapping her from the tunnels. It was locked in the tunnels under the Manchester Institute because it came from the tunnels under the London Institute. It's been trying to find her this whole time because its job was to drag her back to the Fear domains and it failed. It needed her, and the rift, to complete its duty.
That's why the rift was more balanced after it went through with Sam. The Archivist was part of what was unbalancing it! And now the poor thing is lost in a world that no longer has the Eye to guide it, with the wrong victim, and not even a Panopticon to go home to. Poor thing is probably hundreds of years old and just wants to do its job. I hope Georgie and Melanie find it and give it a nice cup of tea.

Signals from Somewhere Else
After episode 22 of Protocol, there’s one thing (okay, maybe two things) that everyone is going to be talking about. But I don’t want to talk about that thing (yet. Okay, I lied, it might come up). Instead, I want to dive into some of the implications of this week’s case and how they might relate FR3-D1 [Error], and even Isaac Newton.
Spoilers for TMAGP episodes 21 and 22 below the cut. CW: we’re gonna talk about the brain stuff; probably overuse of the words “fleshy” and “wet” by I blame AJN for that.
Our case in this episode, graciously recounted by Peepaw Augustus, focuses on real-life German psychiatrist and neurologist Hans Berger, whose work led to the invention of the EEG and furthered our understanding of how brainwaves work. The experiment described in the case mirrors actual experiments that Berger completed while working at the University of Jena, including experimentation on a subject with a deformity that allowed easy access to the brain and the placement of silver wires under the scalp to measure electrical activity. Even Berger’s disappointing initial results seem to be in line with history.
Like in real life, the cosmic horrors of this case begin when Berger takes a little depression nap.
The description of “an ocean, deep and unforgiving… full of dark secrets” creates a striking image to be sure, but what’s more interesting to me here is what he recalls next: the “radio signals, invisible and unknowable.” Berger laments that it’s a “shame these two things would never meet,” and then proceeds to enable such a thing to happen, whether he realizes it or not.
He wakes up and is immediately “inspired” to alter the setup he is using to record Herr Schmidt’s brain activity. While Berger is unable to explain how he came up with the idea (we could tell him: it was The Horrors, bud), he transforms his recording device (an early version of an EEG) into a two-way wireless telegraph, using poor Herr Schmidt’s brain as the receiver for the very radio waves that, perhaps, were never meant to make contact with the world below. Berger sent a politely phrased request into the void, and the void screamed back.
Who or what was on the other side can only be guessed at. Was it John/Martin/Jonah, individually or Frankensteined into some horrid chimerical conscience (please read this great post and have your heart broken like me)? Was it The Fears of the Archives-verse, recombined and tossed about like naughty pears in a pear wiggler? Or was it something or someone else entirely? I’m leaning towards JMJ, in parts or as a whole, specifically because I suspect that Hans Berger’s strange (and wetly explosive, thanks Alexander J. Newell) discovery provides a clue to how [Error] and possibly FR3-D1 operate.
Let’s start with [Error]. Here’s what we know about them so far:
They were locked up in tunnels or a basement space under the Archivist’s office at the Manchester Magnus Institute
Something about them causes people, dead and alive, to recount their fears or horrible things that have happened to them (I am not using the word compel here, even though it is used in the transcript for episode 21, and that is on purpose)
They seem very invested in getting the entire story out (this is, admittedly, speculation, as it’s unclear as to whether “THERE IS MORE” is in reference to more victims or more of Gwen’s story)
They have some really weird dogs
I’ve seen a lot of folks speculate that [Error] is or was the Head Archivist in the Protocol universe, and I’ve also seen a lot of folks speculate that [Error] is or was John (and therefore also The Archivist). I think either of these could be true, but more than anything, I think [Error] is a high-powered antenna with the ability to turn the people around them into speakers. Or maybe Speakers? I do love a good capitalization.
What if the “esteemed brethren” of The Magnus Institute were all too aware of the unusual results of Berger’s experimentation, and hoped to tap into the unusual consciousness(es) floating around in the radio waves and ether of the universe by creating their own version? Perhaps they thought they could create a direct conduit (think almost like a psychic medium) through a person, someone who might be able to communicate with whatever is out there and be able to relay its/their esoteric knowledge to help further the Institute’s goals of “Universal Transmutation.” We know already that the Institute was interested in doppelgangers and perhaps alternate universes and that they had a lot of irons in the fire (the Millenium Dome, the gifted child programme, Welling’s Mutare Materia research program, the various outreach centres), so it would hardly be surprising if they were also experimenting in communicating with “the beyond” to try and gain more knowledge.
And maybe it worked. Maybe they were able to create or transmute someone into an antenna, capable of receiving these strange signals, except these mixed signals were too powerful and ultimately took over. Perhaps [Error] is the natural consequence of who or whatever was speaking to Berger finally getting “OUT.” And if who or whatever was speaking to Berger happened to include the fractured consciousness of a hungry Archivist, well then, we have an interesting case for [Error]. [Error], whether or not they were an/The Archivist in this universe, could now be directed by the desires of The Archivist, channeling The Archivist’s thoughts and abilities but with a power greater than that we ever saw in John (or, perhaps, the same power but completely unrestrained by his remaining humanity). Or [Error] could be channeling The Fears themselves, bringing parts of them through not unlike they were brought through in The Magnus Archives.
Either way, I doubt that creating a connection between whatever was out there and the physical world led to the results the Institute was hoping for.
[Error] is receiving the signal to feed, but the signal coming through is so loud and so powerful that instead of politely asking to snack on some horror stories, coming into contact with them instead allows them to pick up on a person’s horrible experience and forces them to broadcast it to the world. It’s possible that, upon creating [Error] or losing control of [Error], those at The Magnus Institute locked them up and cut them off from the dangerous signal they were receiving… Sam accidentally poking a big hole in the floor (and the alchemical signals inscribed in it) could have reestablished the connection between [Error] and the force guiding them.
Now let’s talk about FR3-D1. We know that FR3-D1so far is that it
Is a “bespoke” internet software developed sometime in the mid-90s, apparently designed to search the internet for spooky stuff
Has German source code
Crashes, constantly, much to Colin’s dismay (? Or maybe he’s helping those crashes along to stop it from listening in… but that’s a theory for another time)
Has, within the last year or so of Sam joining the O.I.A.R., started running a text-to-speech program that reads certain cases out in one of three voices, two of which are familiar to anyone who has listened to The Magnus Archives
Occasionally has some unusual .JMJ errors
Seems to be “targeting” Sam with specific cases related to The Magnus Institute
Is believed to be “listening in” by Colin, Alice, and Sam (which is supported by what we know as the audience)
Has been working “better” since Colin has been on mandatory mental health leave
May have some connection to the Stasi, the secret police force of Communist East Germany before the fall of the USSR
Is assumed (by us as the audience) to have some kind of sentience
There are some other items (notably the spreadsheets found in the ARG that appear to be from or connected to FR3-D1and the emails Sam and Gwen have received) that could be connected to FR3-D1 but have not yet been confirmed. Yet aspects of FR3-D1 do seem to share some commonality with [Error], namely a level of sentience and the ability to locate the stories of people who have had horrifying supernatural encounters.
My speculation here is that FR3-D1 and [Error] were both constructed using the same premise or with the same goal in mind: to receive and channel the signals of entities or consciousnesses existing in or coming from “Somewhere Else”: FR3-D1 through a supernaturally or alchemically conceived software program, and [Error] through a supernaturally or alchemically conceived transmutation on a living human.
If this proves to be the case, then the results seem… distinct, albeit with the potential to be equally dangerous. FR3-D1 is more “controllable” and could potentially be better able to separate out the signals being received, manifesting as “Augustus,” “Chester,” and “Norris.” Now these “three” could still be part of homunculus-esque JohnMartinJonah consciousness, but perhaps the computer program is a little more stable and delineated than the fleshy wet mess of the human brain, and therefore what remains of each individual consciousness is able to act more distinctly and independently. In contrast, [Error] (and their fleshy wet mess of human brain) is receiving the signals all mixed and jumbled together, with no failsafes to keep them from “overloading” or being entirely taken over by The Horrors or JMJ or The JMJ Horrors. Given their spectral descriptions, it’s possible that fleshy human brain and body couldn’t take it anymore and, pun intended, gave up the ghost.
[Error] could be, in some ways, a bodiless, mindless soul acting on a confused mess of instinct and hunger; FR3-D1 is then, perhaps, the elevated mind, in (more) control but disconnected from a body and perhaps from a soul. Given the heavy influence of alchemy in The Magnus Protocol and the importance in alchemy of the number three, the Tria Prima, and the balance of mind, body, and soul, there may be a third entity we have yet to meet who, like FR3-D1 and [Error], are tuned into these signals from beyond and is eager to reunite with the rest… or perhaps FR3-D1 and [Error] are looking for a body of their own to inhabit and find balance (Sam, anyone?).
I feel like I myself am beginning to mix the signals I started with, but before I attempt to wrap this up, I do briefly want to throw one more piece of spaghetti on the wall, because I think it’ll wind up being something: the mention, specifically, of the silver wire the Berger used in his experiment.
It was Dr. Caton who recommended that Berger use the silver wire, as silver is known for being an effective conductor of electricity. Silver also holds importance as one of the seven metals of alchemy and as a possible base metal in the creation of a Philosopher’s Stone. Perhaps equally important here is that the Diana’s Tree, also known as the Arbor Philosophorum, is created using a solution including silver (or more accurately, silver nitrate) and mercury (one of the elements in the Tria Prima)… yep, the (sort of) same spooky tree created by Newton in TMAGP 19, where Newton gave his dog an existential crisis and Robert Hooke was like “burn it all down.” The conclusion we could draw here is that silver is used in both TMAGP 19 and TMAGP 22 to connect organic life to the unseeable Knowledge of some other plane… with potentially disastrous effects.
Whether it ends up being the case that FR3-D1 and [Error] are big antennas wirelessly receiving The Horrors or I’m totally off base, it seems pretty clear that Hans Berger “tuned in” to an unusual—and dangerous—signal, and what’s more, enabled that signal to connect with the Protocol world in a way that likely never should have happened.

TMAGP 21 Theories
Alrighty! Since TMAGP21 is public! Here are my theories that I've been stewing on (while sick with COVID) since Tuesday!
First, The Facts:
Jon, in MAG 191, says the creatures in the tunnels with Melanie, Georgie, and The Cult are Archivists who are guarding the way to the Panopticon
We know that Annabel Cane and The Web manipulated Jon since the start and that the tapes are theirs, not The Eye's
Additionally, Annabel explains her knowledge that, if one fear was to leave through the rift in Hilltop Road, then they all would leave, following Jon's voice in the tapes (and whoever else recorded statements, which we know includes Martin and Elias)
Something's weird about Celia
Celia seems to know more than she's letting on and seemed startled at Freddie's voices
Something's up with people and fears/needs (and there are Avatars/Beings of some sort)
Gwen was Compelled
There is a gas main under the Institute and it was used to destroy it in MAG
Sam and Alice explored the Institute in Manchester, resulting in Sam breaking a trapdoor
ERROR was then heard climbing out of said trapdoor in the Institute
The Conclusions from Before TMAGP21
Celia is from a different universe
Jon, Martin, and Jonah(?)'s voices are in the computers of the OIAR
Colin, and now maybe Alice?, think that something's wrong and/or watching
Gwen seems to be somewhat Eye-aligned
What we know from TMAGP21
Gwen was COMPELLED
ERROR is an Archivist
ERROR said that there were "more [fears? Victims? Peoples?] elsewhere"
ERROR 'claimed' Gwen
Gwen experienced something related to The Corruption as a child
There is a gas main under the London construction site for the Institute
My Conclusions/theories
The Case gave major Panopticon construction vibes, especially with the known gas main under the London site, just like the gas main in the Institute. The Manchester site is this universe's first Institute, with the London institute being its second (assuming construction was finished)
ERROR is an Archivist that was 'awoken' by Sam and Alice poking around the Ruins and is just like the ones that were in the Tunnels during the Eyepocalypse.
The Tunnels are a new rift (like Hilltop Road) that were created by the destruction of the Panopticon. Celia was accidentally pulled into TMAGP's universe as the rift was created. Additionally, ERROR said there were "more elsewhere", possibly insinuating that they're not of TMAGP's world either
Jon and Martin's voices are the reason the Fears are here, though I'm not sure if their conciseness' are in the computer too. Given no bodies were found, there's a possibility that they were pulled in by the tapes too, especially given Jon WAS The Archivist and DIRECTLY tied to the Eye in the end. This is supported by the fact that Freddie seems to be 'thinking' and 'feeding' certain cases to Sam and Celia, so maybe Jon, Martin, and Jonah's conciseness' were also pulled (maybe their bodies were destroyed? Maybe they'll bodysnatch from doppelgangers?)
The Fears are not fully fledged, though they're being embraced and even changed by those who connect with them, such as Ink5oul. They were pulled by the Institute team's voices (Jon, Elias, Martin, Tim, Sasha, pretty much anyone who has their voice on the tapes), just as The Web intended and are now lurking. We're just seeing the result of MAG200 and Jon's fears
Does this make sense? Probably not. I'm probably grasping at shadows, but it's something I've been stewing on for the week so y'all get to see it too

Then there is a thud on the hidden wooden trapdoor and the rattle of a padlock.
There is the distinct sound of a key being dragged across wood then being blindly fumbled in a lock which finally clicks.
The trap door opens, the lock falling away and [ERROR] emerges and takes a shuddering breath..
Click.
Okay no but listen. The key scraped along the door before it gets wriggled “blindly” into the lock. I’m about to go BBC Sherlock up in here.
Either the person (entity?) under there is moving around without any sort of light, or they are blind.
It’s not jmart or any of the rest of the archives crew, so if it is someone who’s blind, my money’s on some archival assistant who figured out the secret to quitting and got themselves out sometime before the whole place went up in flames. My gut says it’s someone with some connection to the Eye (or equivalent), mostly bc tape recorder and Magnus Institute, but that’s just a guess. Leitner wasn’t Eye-aligned, after all.
Okay but the other thing???
Why are there still tunnels. This is Manchester. Robert Smirk didn’t build a network connected to Milbank here. Did Jonah Magnus ask him to build something here anyway? Is this just a sub-basement only below the Institute? Am I going to be gnawing st the bars of my cage until I get answers to those other questions???

I'm obsessed with the episode 10 final scene and the Magnus institute weirdness in general but the trapdoor specifically is so interesting. The Magnus institute in London was located there because of the millbank prison tunnels and the panopticon, so what's under the Magnus institute Manchester? Is it the same tunnels in a different place? Is it new tunnels? Is it containment or storage for whatever the Magnus institute was working on? Considering [error] was locked down there and needed the key to get out, does that somehow involve them? Also interesting that there's still an entrance to whatever's under the institute in the head archivist's office too.
#the magnus protocol#tmagp 10#tmagp spoilers#this goes up there with weird details about the magnus institute that I think about so so much#this and the fact that the archives are apparently just gone because what does that mean? where did they go?#also the tape recorder this episode was cool. I don't know if it means anything yet but I screamed when I realized#how am i supposed to be okay the next few weeks of the mid season break???

i have nothing to back this up but i wonder why the magnus institute in the protocolverse is in manchester? it seems like an odd detail to just throw in for no reason but i can't think of an explanation based on tma. (semi-spoiler ->) we're fairly sure from the end of the new episode that the tunnels still run under the institute but i am very curious as to why it isn't in london anymore

RedCanary specifically mentions that there seemed to be an Archive or library in the first basement layer, which implies there might be even lower levels.
And since this Institute is in Manchester, it can't be the Milbank Prison tunnels that were under the London Institute. So either there are more legitimate lower levels or the Manchester Institute has its own spooky tunnels/structures under the basement for some reason.
#tmagp#tmagp spoilers#probably over thinking or misinterpreting this but oh well.#they're almost certainly going to end up at the Institute at some point#so guess we'll find out

Now in a relatively readable version, updated to MAGP12! Cw for spoilers. Image and rambles under the cut
Closeups and elaborations
Why do the employees work the night shift? It's weird for an office job. Even the institute was a day job. Why is it at night? It can't be just because, finding employees would be 10 times harder
If no one checks the files classification ("you basically never get a misfile" qt Alice) what are they doing it for? What do you even need to classify them first? The fears hardly benefited from a well kept archive.
Why does Gwen want Lena's job. Is it just pettiness or something else?
What is up with Alice? What is following her? What does she know?
Why does Collin hate tech in his office. What does HE know
Celia. Celia darling what is up with you. Do you regularly wake up on highways in your pjs or ? And do you know about the horrors? She mentioned tape recorders and manila folders. Like. Like tma. What does it mean. Also wdym Jack and Georgie elaborate.
What did Klaus know that made Lena try to kill him? Where is he and is he alive?
Is the jon from the email Chester or is it tmp!jon that still got roped up in supernatural stuff. Why did he send Sam there.
Klaus was german. Was he the one to create FR3-D1? Is that related to why Lena wants him dead?
Is Augustus really Jonah like many people think? We haven't heard his voice yet. Jonah died before Jon and Martin, did he also go Somewhere Else?
THE FUCKING "oh... Hello" EPISODE KEEPS ME UP AT NIGHT. WHAT DOES IT MEAN. ARE THEY ALIVE OUTSIDE OF THE COMPUTERS? ARE THEY CONSCIOUS? WHERE ARE THEY?
What is the "protocol" what does it regard and why is it classified? Is it in regards to the fearpocalypse?
Why did the text to speech suddenly appear. Did no one question it.
Bonzo is canonically a government official. Do with that what you will
Why does the OIAR generate statements? I wonder if Needles and Ink5oul are also externals. Do they only kill people or Do Other Stuff too?
What was the gifted program? What happened? Is that why Sam is in the OIAR now?
Why is Gertrude protective of Gerry about it? Are they related or is it a found family thing. Where is Mary. Did Gertrude work for the institute even here?
What's up with Gerry. He's hiding something i feel it. Deeply suspicious.
Who or what is Error. The audio started glitching after they got out.
In tma the tunnels were millbank prison. Now the institute is in Manchester, so what was it built on and what are the tunnels?
Was Elias still hired here? Is he related to Gwen, does he exist, is that why she wants Lena's job so bad? Did she notice the switch from Elias to Jonah?
How did it burn down? Was it arson, a leak, an accident?
The papers????????????????
The fucking. Internet magnus statement. Raised SO MANY QUESTIONS. There's gore (?) or weird graffiti (?) the photos are freaky and someone doesn't want information spread about the institute. There were eyes (?) (like... Full on eyes? Still preserved after 25 years?) both the graffiti and the gore were banned. What does this mean.
Here redcanary says explicitly: no documents or papers, even mush. However Alice and sam found them in the archives and drawers.
Also there's worm tracks on the floor of the archives? Jane Prentiss?
Who was "chosen" from the program. Chosen for what. Why did Dam wish he was chosen. is it regret for a missed opportunity or survivors guilt. What weird stuff happened.
I will try my best to keep this updated with every new episode but Wow it's a mess.
The tmp conspiracy board is coming along nicely
Anyone want a readable copy ?

OTHER INFO:
Once again, beware of triggering content.
His story/introduction, copied from his roleplay blog:
Jack was born on December 21st of 2047 in the state of Rhode Island, where he lived for the first five years of his life. He later moved to New York for the rest of his childhood and teenage years before moving to Boston, Massachusetts. There, he went to college at Suffolk University along side his future wife Nora.
Later, he was drafted into the Resource Wars where he fought in Anchorage for his first two years of service, and fought in China for the rest of his time in the army. Jack retired after a horrible army experience, and married his fiance, Nora, when he returned. The two lived in Sanctuary Hills in the House of Tomorrow, had Shaun, and were put into the vault in 2077. The rest of his story is history.
MENTAL HEALTH HISTORY
Jack was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder when he was twelve, and cyclothymia at fourteen. His mother’s side of the family had a long running history of depression and bipolar disorder, so it was no surprise that he had cyclothymia (another form of bipolar disorder) and depression.
Following his return from war, he quickly developed PTSD and insomnia. His PTSD became so bad that it hindered his relationship with Nora, so much that she dropped him off at the Parsons Insane Asylum until one day, his wife realized that dropping him off at Parsons was a mistake, and took him to see his sister (who was a psychiatrist/therapist).
He has little recollection of his time in Parsons. Occasionally, he gets random flashbacks of his time there, experiencing memories that he didn’t remember. Over time though, after he stopped seeing his sister for PTSD, he slowly got better with the help and support of his wife. After waking up in the wasteland, it became progressively worse (luckily, not as bad as it was after he retired from war).
Jack suffers with self-harm after leaving the vault, yet quickly recovers from it, to only have his suicidal depression return later.
FANFICTIONS
His main fanfiction is Fallout 4: Purple, which is currently being rewritten from chapters one to twenty one. Purple starts after meeting Father in the Institute, as he picks up Piper from Diamond City and begins to fall for her.
I will be eventually writing a prequel story to Purple, based on his time from the moment he left the vault until he meets Father.
I have also written an AU fic for him, called Wastelands featuring Elenora Clarke (belonging to @laurenallyse). The Scharke AU states that neither Nate nor Nora were murdered in Vault 111. In this AU, Jack and Elenora are together.
The Scharke AU is also present on Jack’s roleplay blog, @implicit-hero, as well as Elenora’s roleplay blog, @ecotonebeing.

Trump hails death of ‘depraved’ Islamic State leader Baghdadi in U.S. raid
October 28, 2019
By Steve Holland and Phil Stewart
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Fugitive Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi died “whimpering and crying” in a raid by U.S. special forces in northwest Syria, President Donald Trump announced on Sunday, fulfilling what he called his top national security goal.
Baghdadi, who had led the jihadist group since 2010, killed himself by detonating a suicide vest after fleeing into a dead-end tunnel as U.S. forces closed in, Trump said in a televised address from the White House.
He was positively identified by DNA tests 15 minutes later, the president said.
“He was a sick and depraved man and now he’s gone,” said Trump, adding that capturing or killing Baghdadi had been his administration’s top national security priority.
Hours later, the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia said Islamic State spokesman Abu al-Hassan al-Muhajir, described as Baghdadi’s right-hand man, had also been killed in a separate joint raid by Kurdish-led and U.S. forces in northern Syria.
The death of Baghdadi is a severe blow to Islamic State, which has been in disarray and has no declared successor as leader yet. But the group has in the past proved resilient, continuing to mount or inspire attacks in the region and beyond despite losing most of its territory in recent years.
Baghdadi had long been sought by the United States – which offered a $25 million reward for his capture – as leader of a jihadist group that at one point controlled large areas of Syria and Iraq, where it declared a caliphate.
Islamic State has carried out atrocities against religious minorities and attacks on five continents in the name of an ultra-fanatic version of Islam that horrified mainstream Muslims.
“Baghdadi’s death represents a huge blow to the organization’s capacity to swell its ranks, mobilize its existing supporters and develop the momentum that could restore it to its past glories,” said Ranj Alaaldin, a fellow at Brookings Institution in Doha focused on Iraq.
“That said, ISIS (Islamic State) will still be a potent, under-ground terrorist threat.”
Trump said “many” of Baghdadi’s people were killed in the raid and added that in blowing himself up, Baghdadi also killed three of his children.
U.S. forces suffered no personnel losses, he said. He also thanked Russia, Turkey, Syria and Iraq for their support.
Turkey said it was proud to have helped “bring a notorious terrorist to justice”, but Russia’s response was skeptical, with the defense ministry in Moscow saying that it had no reliable information on the U.S. raid and observing there had been previous attempts to kill Baghdadi.
Trump said Baghdadi “reached the end of the tunnel as our dogs chased him down. He ignited his vest, killing himself and his three children”.
“He died … whimpering and crying and screaming.”
U.S. PULLBACK
The raid comes weeks after Trump announced the withdrawal of U.S. troops from northeastern Syria, which permitted Turkey to attack America’s Kurdish allies as it sought to set up a “safe zone”.
The move drew withering criticism from fellow Republicans and Democrats, who expressed concern both at the abandoning of the Kurdish fighters who were instrumental in defeating Islamic State forces in Syria, and that the move might allow the group to regain strength and pose a threat to U.S. interests.
Trump said the raid would not change his decision to withdraw troops from Syria.
But the successful targeting of Baghdadi could help blunt those concerns, as well as boosting Trump domestically at a time when he is facing an impeachment inquiry in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Regional allies welcomed the operation, with Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan saying it marked “a turning point in our joint fight against terrorism” and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praising an “impressive achievement”.
But some, such as French President Emmanuel Macron, also warned Islamic State was not finished. “Al-Baghdadi’s death is a hard blow against Islamic State, but it is just a stage,” he said. France’s interior minister called for increased vigilance in case of acts of revenge by extremists.
Longtime U.S. foe Iran, which accuses the United States and its allies of creating Islamic State, was dismissive. Information Minister Mohammad Javad Azari-Jahromi, tweeted: “Not a big deal, You just killed your creature”.
Iraqi analyst Hisham al-Hashemi, an expert on jihadist groups, said Baghdadi’s death was likely to lead to a split within Islamic State.
“The split in IS is inevitable, it always happens when any radical religious group loses a charismatic leader,” he said.
NIGHT-TIME RAID
In the hours before Trump’s announcement, sources in the region had described the raid on a compound in the village of Barisha, in Idlib province bordering Turkey, in the early hours of Sunday.
Iraqi state television broadcast night-time footage of an explosion and daytime images of a crater in the ground and what it said was the aftermath of the raid, including torn and blood-stained clothes.
Iraq’s military said later in a statement that its intelligence services had located Baghdadi’s whereabouts and had passed the information to the United States.
Trump said eight helicopters carried the U.S. special forces troops to the compound where Baghdadi was hiding, where they were met with gunfire before blasting their way in through the walls to avoid a booby-trapped main door.
The U.S. forces spent around two hours in the compound, he said, adding that they had taken away “highly sensitive material and information”.
Russia “treated us great” by opening up airspace it controlled for the raid and Kurdish allies gave some helpful information, according to Trump. The Russian defense ministry, however, said it was not aware of any assistance to U.S. forces.
The president said he watched the operation unfold in the Situation Room of the White House.
The military named the operation against Baghdadi after U.S. aid worker and hostage Kayla Mueller, U.S. national security adviser Robert O’Brien told NBC’s “Meet the Press”. In 2015, U.S. officials told Reuters https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-hostage-mueller/u-s-woman-hostage-raped-by-islamic-state-leader-before-death-u-s-officials-idUSKCN0QJ2AV20150814 Mueller had been repeatedly raped by Baghdadi himself before she died in Islamic State custody earlier that year.
RELIEF FOR A GRIEVING FATHER
At the height of its power, Islamic State ruled over millions of people in territory running from northern Syria through towns and villages along the Tigris and Euphrates valleys to the outskirts of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
Thousands of civilians were killed by the group as it mounted what the United Nations called a genocidal campaign against Iraq’s Yazidi minority. It also caused worldwide revulsion by beheading foreign nationals from countries including the United States, Britain and Japan.
In one notorious incident, referred to by Trump in his TV address, a captured Jordanian air force pilot was burned alive in a cage.
On Sunday the pilot’s father, Safi Al-Kasaesbeh, told Reuters TV he was relieved by news of Baghdadi’s death.
“I am proud and happy on this day, after hearing of the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, this corrupt man, this insect, this virus that spread throughout the body of not only the Arab nation but also the Muslim nation, who distorted the image of Muslims and Islam,” he said.
The group has claimed responsibility for or inspired attacks in dozens of cities including Paris, Nice, Orlando, Manchester, London and Berlin, and in nearby Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
But in 2017 Islamic State lost control of Mosul in Iraq and Raqqa in Syria, and quickly thereafter almost all of its territory, turning Baghdadi into a fugitive.

Racial injustice must be tackled, PM says
Image copyright Getty Images
Image caption Students at Dunraven School in south London listened as Theresa May explained the audit
Theresa May has warned public services there will be “nowhere to hide” if they treat people differently on the basis of their race.
A new government website shows disparities in educational attainment, health, employment and treatment by police and courts between ethnicities.
The PM said institutions must “explain or change” any variations – but critics are demanding action from ministers.
Labour says government must accept its role in exacerbating injustice.
Adam or Mohamed – who gets the job?
The man correcting stories about Muslims
Is everyone racist?
‘My colour is part of my brand’
The figures cover a wide range of lifestyle indicators, including:
Black Caribbean pupils are permanently excluded from school three times as often as white British classmates
White British pupils on free school meals perform the worst at key stage two, with just 32% reaching the expected level
Indian, Pakistani and white people are more likely to own their own homes than black and Bangladeshi individuals
Unemployment among black, Asian and minority ethnic people is nearly double that of white Britons
Rates of smoking are highest in the mixed and white ethnic groups
Just over half of white adults ate five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, compared with a third of black adults
“People who have lived with discrimination don’t need a government audit to make them aware of the scale of the challenge,” Mrs May said.
“This audit means that for society as a whole – for government, for our public services – there is nowhere to hide.”
Among those contacting the BBC, Shaneil, from Moss Side, Manchester, said: “It shouldn’t matter where you come from or your race. You should be equal, you should be able to do anything you want to do.
“We need more different ethnicities to be in power as well.”
‘I don’t think people in Moss Side get enough chances’
Joseph G Jones, of the Gypsy Council, said the government was failing its Romani and Traveller communities with “multi-discrimination” across people’s lifetimes.
“The younger generations shouldn’t have to put up with endemic ongoing discrimination – for the time being there is little light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.
And Victoria Stevens, a Ukrainian who has lived in the UK for 18 years told the BBC she had no problem in applying for jobs, as she had a mechanical engineering degree, plenty of work experience, and her late husband’s English surname.
But she added: “However, when it came to career progression, I found that a British candidate would get a promotion above me, every time.”

Almost all the data released on ‘Ethnicity Facts and Figures’ is already publicly available and no new data was commissioned for the audit.
Analysis: By BBC home editor Mark Easton
This audit is a giant nudge to change behaviour on issues of race inequality. The odd thing is that the project is not a government trying to nudge the people. It is a government trying to nudge itself.
The prime minister has dedicated her premiership to fighting burning injustices and says she is determined to shine a light on disparities between different racial groups in the UK on a range of areas – health, education, job prospects, housing and so on.
A focus on the many and often troubling differences is – of course – no bad thing, but people might well wonder why we need a public website to get Whitehall departments to take an interest.
And given that ministers have known about these “troubling” and “shocking” disparities for years or even decades, why does it take a prime ministerial nudge to get them to take action?
Read more from Mark
Critics from ethnic minority backgrounds, including former deputy London mayor Munira Mirza, in a letter to The Times, said the “crude and tendentious” approach of comparing the data in the website risked “promoting a grievance culture and policies that harm the communities they aspire to help”.
They said prejudice had declined “markedly” and while injustice must be challenged, there were often many underlying factors to explain differences.
Communities Secretary Sajid Javid denied it would drive a grievance culture but would help identify disparities.
“There are hundreds of thousands of British Pakistani women and Bangladeshi women who don’t speak proper English, who don’t speak English at all,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
“That might be through choice in some cases, it might be a cultural issue. But that is a big issue because that does then hold those women back from the employment market and other opportunities.”
May ‘exacerbated problems’
Labour’s Dawn Butler said government cuts to services had disproportionately affected women, ethnic minorities, disabled and older people.
Speaking in the House of Commons, she said the PM had “done nothing but exacerbate the problems”.
“Far from tackling the burning injustices she’s added fuel to the fire. We need solutions and a sustained effort to really tackle burning injustices, talking shop’s just not going to cut it.”
Although the audit does not focus on government policies, Mrs May is launching a number of measures to combat the differences discovered.
They include Department for Work and Pensions “hotspots” to help people from ethnic minorities get jobs, and traineeships for 16-24 year-olds.
Under the plans, the Ministry of Justice will also adopt recommendations from the Lammy Review, including demanding that prisons have performance indicators to assess how inmates are treated and how representative their workforce is.
David Lammy MP told BBC News the data was “not all doom and gloom” and “some progress” had been made.
“The truth is you can’t rest back on your laurels, you can’t leave race and issues of class and poverty off the agenda. Some of this has been left off the agenda over the last seven years so we’ve fallen backwards.”
