Veluriyam Mirage fic, but if we followed Klee’s assignments and made it an RPG, complete with infiltrations, strategy, and classes. Contains mild spoilers for things mentioned in the 3.8 event quest.
(Quick reminder: Klee = Mage, Eula = Swordmaster/Magic Knight, Traveler = Knight, Collei = Healer/Medic, Kokomi = General/Strategist, Idyia = Mascot/Insider, Kaeya = Master Thief/Rogue)
"General," goes the sly Kaeya, lounging on his deck chair lazily, "how should we go about this heist?"
Lumine raises an eyebrow. Heist is an interesting word for infiltrating the Veluriyam Mirage’s compound, implying that this band of rag-tag travelers is going to steal something. Well, their team Rogue always knows more than he lets on, so she lets him be.
"We'll split into... hm, four groups," General Kokomi says. She quickly unfurls the map provided to them by Idyia, marking various points Lumine doesn't understand before turning to the assembly. "Alright, we need four things for this infiltration."
"First, we need a main group to frontally assault the Veluriyam compound. The goal of the attack is not to bring down the compound, but to assemble all of its defenses in retaliation. That means we need to send our two strongest warriors."
"I'll go," Lumine dutifully raises her hand. As the token Knight of the group, she has plenty of experience fighting through hordes of enemies, and she reckons she has the highest endurance of anyone in the group. "If it's enemies that need wiping out, then I'm fit for the job."
"Agreed," the General says, summoning one of her water fish and colouring it golden. It appears on the map, directly in front of the Veluriyam compound. "Swordmaster Eula, perhaps you would deign to lend your strength to our Knight of Honours?"
The General has dodged a bullet— despite having met the Swordmaster mere minutes ago, she has already accurately tuned herself to the aristocrat’s wavelength.
"You need my help?" scoffs Eula, but Lumine can see the faintest trace of a smile across her lips, and hurries to say yes before the General is too confused by their Swordmaster's perpetual shield. Hm... with that kind of shield, perhaps she'd be better known as the Tank, except Tanks don't exist in this universe, do they? Well, she hasn't been to Fontaine yet, and the Ruin Guards come pretty close...
"You two are the Cryo Squad, and will be attacking the compound head on." Kokomi's voice drags Lumine out of her thoughts. "Collei, do you have enough material for three vulneraries each for them?"
Their Healer squeaks, not used to the direct attention. She nods hesitantly, though, and whips out her cauldron immediately, muttering under her breath as she counts out the thirteen-and-a-half cups of Nilotpala concentrate needed for each vulnerary.
"Good. Next, we need two people to enter the compound after its defenses have been drawn away," General Kokomi says. "It probably requires lockpicking and a good knowledge of dismantling elemental mechanisms, so Kaeya, you're up."
The Rogue sits up straighter, although the lazy glint in his eyes doesn't go away. "Aye aye, captain," he drawls.
Although Kokomi turns her head for a moment, Lumine can still catch the roll of her eyes. "Anyway, Idyia, you should go with Kaeya."
"Me?" Idyia squeaks, suddenly looking around frantically. "What use am I in infiltration? I'm not a thief, and I don't have the skills to fight off enemies."
It's true— this team is in deep trouble if they have to fight, but the General doesn't have much of a choice, since all their hard-hitters have to go front stage. Kaeya is owns way too many knives for his own good, anyhow, and Idyia has a strange connection with water that perhaps their Master Thief could coax out with his signature snark.
"Idyia, your skill specifically lies with the Veluriyam Mirage contraptions within the compound," the General expounds, ever-patient. "Kaeya may have generalist knowledge in all types of traps and mechanisms, but you are the only one of this group who knows how to handle the Veluriyam contraptions."
This seems to mollify Idyia, who nods with more confidence, and the General places two more fish at the side entrance of the Veluriyam compound, dark and light blue, labeled Hydro squad: no doubt something about the poetics of water being formless, changing shape and entering cracks and crevices.
"Now comes bombardment," and the General's sigh is audible, given that everyone gathered immediately turns their eyes to Klee. The girl in question jumps a little at all the attention, but quickly gives a big smile and thumbs-up.
"General Fish-Lady wants me to use my bombs?!" She squeaks in delight. "Klee will be sure to deliver!"
Klee is... technically their Mage. Lumine wishes she could introduce her companions to the concept of artillery, though, because that suits Klee far better.
All Kokomi does is sigh and pull Klee over for a private talk, which leaves Lumine some time to converse with her designated squad member.
"Swordmaster Eula?" Lumine addresses respectfully, if not a tad cheekily, saluting her as well. "We may as well discuss tactics while the General schools our Mage on acceptable levels of bombardment."
Eula nods stiffly, stifling a smile at their youngest member's antics. "Very well. Have you any ideas?"
"Well, I must warn you that no plan survives contact with the enemy," Lumine says, hoping she sounds sagely instead of pretentious. "But if you'll take no offence to it, I suggest using me as a shield, while you deal out strikes safely from behind."
Eula scoffs, but she doesn't immediately shut Lumine down, so that's a win. "An insulting offer," she tilts her head haughtily. "One is very much capable of attack without your protection."
"I make the offer not to insult you, Swordmaster Eula, but to increase our chances of success," Lumine consoles, trying to match the aristocrat's respectful and dignified air. "We will be fighting for as long as the other groups need to pull off their plans. There will be no opportunity to pull back and regroup, nor to lick our wounds. Minor injuries, therefore, may become deadly as well— therefore we must minimise damage to ourselves more than maximise damage to the enemy. It does the team no good if we are both fall before the objective is achieved."
"And you believe yourself capable of sustaining the damage meant for two people?" Eula asks, but there it is, that slight tone of concern that simultaneously makes Lumine want to crawl into a hole and die and also puff out her chest in pride.
"I mean not to boast, Sir Eula, but I am a Knight of the Cosmic— well, Knight of Honours now, well-versed in defensive tactics," Lumine puts her arms on her hips. "With me as a bulwark, you may freely dance without fear of being injured."
Eula narrows her eyes, but acquiesces with a slight nod. Perhaps the word 'dance' helped win her over— only Lumine knows, after all, that their Swordmaster's deadly weapon is not her strength or speed, but the unyielding grace with which she weaponises the Dance of Aphros.
"Alright, you are Pyro Squad,” the General huffs as Klee, who has been appropriately schooled, goes back to join the group. “To keep up our Archmage’s strength, Collei, you should join her.”
“...Archmage?” Collei blurts out, and Lumine sympathises with her confusion. Even if she did know what the word meant, it’s impossible to understand why the General promoted Klee— maybe that was the reason for the private talk? Promotion in exchange for not causing collateral damage? But Klee doesn’t seem the type to want to have a higher class than anyone else, given her nature, so maybe it was to boost her stats? No wait, hold on, wrong world...
“Yup! I’m Archmage Klee now, da-da-da!” Klee gives an adorable grin that doesn’t quite mesh with the number of explosives clutched in her hands. Only ever-observant Kaeya is quick enough to react, tapping her on the shoulder, a silent signal: explosives away. She stows them away reluctantly. “What was it that Mom said? Pleasure to be working with you, Miss Collei!”
Collei flushes red, but the General cuts in with her command before Collei can bury herself in shame. “Collei, it’s not a very glamorous job, but bombardment requires incredible physical and mental endurance. Once the signal is given, your medical knowledge will be invaluable to make sure our Archmage doesn’t run out of strength halfway.”
“Right!” Collei snaps to attention, seemingly calmed by being given direct instructions. “I suppose I’ll need to prepare mana tonics? Perhaps some fireproof elixirs, too... ah, but Master Tighnari always said elemental elixirs need their opposing reagents for maximum effectiveness, and there won’t be any Cryo Whopperflower nectar nearby...”
“Well, I can simply donate some of my elemental powers,” Kaeya says, drawing an icicle with his fingertips idly. “And as I understand, you wield the power of Dendro, correct? Our little Archmage’s bombs do quite a lot of damage, but wouldn’t it be more efficient if you could combine your elements to trigger widespread Burning?”
“An excellent idea, Master Thief,” the General pointedly says. Lumine gets the feeling she doesn’t like being superceded, even though Kaeya’s suggestion was fairly reasonable. “You’ll need some time to get ready, so Pyro Squad, go work on your preparations now.”
Klee and Collei dutifully disperse to one of the campfires. With a nod from Kokomi, Kaeya also leaves, generating icicles on request from an emboldened Collei.
“Now, as for me... I thank you for appointing me the General, but what use is a General if they do not fight with their team?” Kokomi smirks, a flicker of pride making its way to her usually serene countenance. “I alone will take charge of the fourth job: sabotage.”
Idyia is the first to raise an objection, surprisingly. “With respect, General... isn’t that Hydro Squad’s job? The Master Thief and I are due to switch off all their defenses and turn the Veluriyam Mirage contraptions to our favour.”
“You are correct, Idyia.” Kokomi nods, once again mollifying the anxious woman. “My sabotage will not be conducted on the compound itself. If I had to summarise it...”
The General smiles, and this time, it is a terrifying visage— the teeth of an anglerfish, the predatory yawn of a tiger.
“Let’s say our enemies are going to be... excessively inconvenienced.”
~~
Not sure if I’m going to continue this, but this idea possessed me in the middle of the quest and I had to write it down before I forgot it all.
As a side note, I imagine Lumine is like the “pre-promote” unit from FE (think Seth or Frederick). That’s the Knight: tanky and good at offense. Ignore the fact she looks like a teenage girl, because Lumine could probably pull off some extremely dextrous and impressive tactics if the game would let her wield more than two elements at the same time, hello.
Eula as “Swordmaster” (she’s called Magic Knight for some reason in CN?) would fit more into the Critical Hit Beast archetype. High ATK and Crit, but relatively low defense (despite her metaphorical shield). She’s analogous to characters like Lyn, Catherine, Lucina, and Say’ri from Fire Emblem. (Perhaps Dancing = Critical Hit?)
Klee is Klee. Kaeya is the Thief who could probably die in one hit but gets all the lockpicking/chest work done. Idyia is the NPC who knows stuff. Kokomi, as the General, is the Player of the RPG game. Collei is a weird pick as Healer but I went with it. I forgot about Paimon, but I simply don’t want to write about her.

Same anon who wrote about Nylander.
The only thing we know from William recently was what that blog Sidelines said about him. They posted 2 things about him aka « The Viking ». I think they were saying how he was just basically in his hot boy summer and being a slutty man. This was the last thing The Sidelinestimes posted about him (June 9th and the previous post was 2 days before):
« Our favorite hockey player, The Viking, is making headlines again, and this time it’s not for his skills on the ice. The whispers around town suggest that our Nordic hero isn’t great at counting when it comes to his social circle. Two’s a crowd, three’s a party… good thing he’s not claustrophobic!
While everyone’s been focused on his previous escapades and the alleged tangled web of past relationships, The Viking has been quietly assembling quite the entourage. Word on the street is he’s juggling more than just hockey pucks— and let’s just say, keeping track of who’s who might require more fingers than he’s got. Good thing they all get along!
Stay tuned, Sideline Squad. We’re on the edge of our seats to see how this drama unfolds. Will The Viking manage to keep his lineup straight, or is a power play in order? »
Source: The Sideline Times 06/09/2024
So many way to interpret this: is he having a threesome? Is he sleeping with two girls who are friend or friendly (like from their Stockholm elite circle)? And he mixed up their name because that is one of the MOST William thing to do. 🤣

@digenvez : She might have picked out this specific sweater just for him. Might have picked it specifically because it was very soft and warm and good to cuddle against when approaching Suguru out of the blue, taking only a second to wrap arms around his neck and pull him into a hug for him to relax a bit. [ ♡ weeee ]
To honor the fall in pursuit of new missions and folklore hunting Tokyo squad from Metropolitan Tech assembled march from campus in the sign of tripping! Their anchor - a cottage where the world feels less tacked, engulfed by woodland realm in the mountains. Geto mysteriously delayed beyond the river that divided the residence of students from Senseis by the fault of passionately conceived ideas and returned when there was nothing from the hearkened light of day. With three Pumpkin Spice lattes in his clutch, the reason was none of reaping profits, ( he merely discovered much to his surprise and bewilderment a store that sold gauges from real stones on his secret venture to scout early birthday surprises he could discover for Satoru and Shoko ). '' Sorry, I came back a bit later than planned, I discovered-- … '' The noises of cracking fireplace filled the room where a vintage tune played from the stereo. No alumni in the zone of sight, the room seemed empty so he safely assumed the rest of his companions and colleagues scattered somewhere - technically how could they not, there was a lot to explore around such a place of novelty, and students had to be wild crazy from rare tripping if not frightened by the fact they all had to awaken at deep night to track and seal rare apparitions for their mission. The scarf and outdoor shoes were first to come off, the coffee trio multitasking challenged tank by needle drop.
The Sorcerer medic before she’d been bowed and tired meanwhile slipped out of another room as soon as the other had entered; following intuitively node of interconnection. She could ambush him in rainy weather just as in warmest of sunny days. With interest that spanned far and wide, he observed her movements scooting closer. He caught a glimpse of her eyes like tones of earth and warmest tree barks looking at him with the force of nature and calmness of ponds and in addition to what is usual or strictly necessary something that brought his auto-pilot flight back from the brink.
" Oh, you're awake? Thought you went to take a quick nap since we are about to wake up late at night, either way, I brought us some coffee, '' he couldn't help but feel accomplished at the eye-welcoming shine and blink in surprise once spotting one fluffy sweater, " and it has been long since you used such crafty method on me. Continually, in all kinds of ways he has to be able to stomach falling short of the mark, but there is a certain unique and strange delight when she is the one to confine him in the place of caught breath and solstice.
Behind her, the ensemble of fox-trotting flames from the hearth outlined her silhouette from shapen light-like planetary lodge kissed by lava, breeze that ventured over the window pane ajar raised and played with her hair much it would remind him a witch dancing by the fire. She found her victim, imprisoned him, and hypnotized during darkest dusk; with no chance to escape but to submit and obey her will (* and gladly). Her colors sit in his intuition, sweetening his backward eye. Always ready for a showdown she reminded him of caramel, strong and sensual browns magicked by dappled light, she could skin a bone without blinking an eye, an ever-morphing butcher of the dead, the glow of personality brought a vibrant warmth to his heart and soul. Inseparable from his own. Her fingerprints a surging medicine for mind texturing comfort, so avert from judging eye, unkind words, and frequent attempts to conceal mental pain, softening, reducing spellbinding marvel in their simplicity.
Better days are ahead for those who have put bitter ones behind. The language of her gesture resonates through the gaps and the core of his sentient being; reckoning to envisage their common relaxation. In the very midst of the desert, lucid invitation to live and to create binds itself around his neck. To feel and perceive her hues his arm concealed reverence for her virtues, returning the favor and retaining potency in tinge of lingering smile amid mutual embrace.
Shoko.
It is impossible — but end me if I'll ever stop holding you like this; pierce my heart with a scalpel if I'll ever deserve it.

Terminus City - "Landlord Bastard" The East Coast of Oi! 1999 Oi! Punk
Plays: 2.2K+ on Spotify // 300+ on YouTube
If you've been following me for over a year now, you probably know that a big component of this blog at one point was to present songs by mostly obscure acts that I felt were deserving of much more love and attention than they'd ever received. I've said it many times before and I'll say it again here: one major goal of this blog is to dig up all this slept-on shit and ultimately, little by little, piece together a thorough and mostly untold and unknown history of music.
And I think various artist compilations and DJ mixes are a pretty neat avenue for accomplishing that goal. They can be retrospective and present the big, era-defining hits; they can be samplers that show the best of what a label has to offer; and most importantly, they can be ephemerally contemporaneous and provide a snapshot of what a certain slice of music was like during a highly specific period of time. Those latter ones seem to capture those raw, authentic, and pure little moments of history like nothing else out there really can and it's those types of compilations and DJ mixes that I tend to derive the most joy out of.
The simple fact of the matter is that almost all music is ephemeral and also cloistered. It stays in its scene and it gets some brief play within that scene and then it just pretty much vanishes into thin air, never to really be thought of again. But of course, it doesn't actually vanish; it just sits there on dust-collecting vinyl, tapes, CDs, 8-tracks, hard drives, and iPods that haven't been touched in years and it also hides in the dark corners of YouTube and streaming services, almost totally ignored by ~[<{the algorithm}>]~.
So, here I am, like the guy at the beach with his trusty metal detector in hand, recognizing the fact that there's all this cool, decades-old shit just laying out there that's barely ever been exposed to the masses, just wanting someone to get the same level of pleasure from it like I have.
I love so much music, I love discovering all these little gems, and I love showing them to other people. And now I'm happy to say that I'm gonna be writing about individual songs once again. I'm gonna be providing you with killer tunes that you've more than likely never heard before by acts you've more than likely never heard of, and I'm going to give you their backstories and provide their proper context. Simply put, this shit deserves to be more known than it currently is and you should know how it all fits into this vast, woven quilt of music history.
So, without further ado, let's fuckin' go, shall we?
~~~~~~~~
Today's song post is about landlords. We sure do hate 'em, don't we folks? We fork over a hefty portion of our paycheck every month to them just to keep a roof over our heads (that's fucked up, isn't it?) and then they do little to nothing in return to make that payment ever seem worth it. They're never there when you need them when something needs fixing, so what's the point of them in the first place? Why do we let them get away with all the scummy, underhanded shit that they pull? Hey, someone should write a song about these bastards!
Well, here's a group that did just that. Introducing a relatively short-lived punk band from Atlanta called Terminus City. Critic Mesquita Borges provides some background on 'em:
Assembled in 1998, Atlanta-based Terminus City endowed frenzied conceptions of hardcore punk, taking on Oi! style's most dashing heritage. Associating pushy guitar sets with raging vocals, the squad crushed the local punk rock scene and quickly began to be named along with the best Oi!-styled teams. Formed by Frank (vocals), Guillermo (guitar), Wes (bass), and Chris [drums], the band started off by playing a series of concerts in the Atlanta area, being the opening act for bands such as Patriot or the Dropkick Murphys. Recording a series of singles and appearing at the Arizona Street Punk Festival in 1999, Terminus City gradually began to congregate a respectable fan base. During late 1999, the crew recorded what turned out to be their debut full-length, Justice Isn't Always Fair, which hit the record stores in 2000.
So, '99 is when Terminus City made their first releases, which consisted of a 7-inch of their own, plus three other 7-inches that they split with other bands. And in addition to those releases, they also ended up contributing a pair of exclusives to two different compilations that year as well: "You Shook Me All Night Long" for Oi Oi - A Tribute to AC/DC and "Landlord Bastard" for The East Coast of Oi!
Now, oi! as a genre has something of a checkered past. It's a working-class kind of punk rock, but it's had some strains of fascism, white nationalism, and reactionary politics within its ranks. And you'll even find some of that grossness on the East Coast of Oi! comp itself, with a song like "Welfare Case" by Squiggy. That's a song I'll never write praiseworthy things about, and, by the way, Squiggy, didn't Clinton pretty much obliterate welfare by the time you'd released your dumb song anyway? Find a fresher shitty thing to write about!
Anyway, I don't know the full discography of Terminus City, but if "Landlord Bastard" is any indication, then it doesn't seem like these guys fell into that bad strain of oi!. Landlords are typically an enemy to working class politics, so I don't think you'd find a right-wing band lamenting about them. But I guess I could be wrong 🤷♂️.
Anyway, it's never *just* the message that'll get me to love a song; the music itself's gotta be good too, of course. And Guillermo's guitar tone as well as the main squealing riff that he sports with it throughout the verses on this song are both nothing short of spectacular; pretty simple in execution, but also catchy as hell, and serving as a nice contrast to both Wes' deep, accompanying bassline and Frank's gravelly vocals too. Blast it in front of your landlord and if they give you any guff about it, then crank it up a notch with this classic from The Coup (YouTube) 😈.
Also, if you like this song, I included it on this broad 90s punk playlist that consists only of tunes that I’ve come across by way of compilations. And it’s also on YouTube and YouTube Music, with a few more added bonus tracks that aren’t on Spotify.
Feels really good to be fully back ☺!
This article will provide valuable insights and tips on how teams can make the most of their budget and maximize their chances of securing top players. It's an interesting read for cricket enthusiasts and team owners alike.
The Role of Money in IPL Auction 2024
Money plays a crucial role in the IPL Auction, and it is no secret that the tournament is one of the most lucrative sports events in the world. Team owners are willing to spend astronomical amounts to acquire players who they believe can give them a competitive edge. The big bucks involved in the auction not only attract top players but also create a frenzy among the team owners. Team owners enter the auction with a predefined budget, but they are often willing to break the bank for certain players. The combination of money and competition leads to intense bidding wars, where million-dollar contracts are handed out to the highest bidder. The IPL Auction has witnessed some staggering amounts being spent on players, with figures reaching multi-million dollars for top-tier talent. While the influx of money has undoubtedly transformed the landscape of cricket and provided players with incredible opportunities, it has also raised concerns about the increasing commercialization of the sport. Critics argue that the focus on money can lead to an imbalance in competition and compromise the spirit of the game. However, it cannot be denied that the financial aspect of the IPL Auction adds a layer of excitement and drama that captivates fans and keeps them hooked. The Impact of Big Money Signings The IPL Auction is known for its big-money signings, where top players attract massive bids from competing teams. These signings not only impact the balance of the teams but also influence the overall dynamics of the tournament. The acquisition of a star player can instill confidence in the team and create a ripple effect on the team's performance. Big money signings often come with high expectations, and the pressure to perform can be immense for the players. The success or failure of these signings is closely scrutinized by fans, team owners, and the media. It is not uncommon for a player's performance in the IPL to have a significant impact on their international career, making each auction a crucial turning point in their career. The impact of big money signings extends beyond the field, as it also contributes to the brand value of the league and the teams. These signings generate headlines, spark debates, and create buzz around the tournament, attracting more fans and sponsors. It's a symbiotic relationship where the players benefit from the financial rewards, while the league and the teams benefit from their star power and marketability. Strategies to Make the Most of the Budget With millions at stake, team owners need to adopt smart strategies to make the most of their budget and secure the best players. Here are some strategies that teams can consider: - Research and scouting: Teams should invest in thorough research and scouting to identify undervalued players who can potentially make a significant impact. - A balanced approach: Instead of going all-in on a couple of star players, teams should aim for a balanced squad that can perform consistently throughout the tournament. - Setting priorities: Teams should identify key positions that need strengthening and allocate a significant portion of their budget to secure top players in those positions. - Avoid overspending: While it's tempting to get caught up in bidding wars, teams need to exercise caution and avoid overspending on players who may not be worth the price tag. By employing these strategies and making well-calculated decisions, teams can optimize their budget and increase their chances of success in the IPL Auction 2024.
The Madness of IPL Auction: Unpredictability and Surprises
The IPL Auction is known for its unpredictability and surprises, which add to the madness and drama of the event. Players who were relatively unknown before the auction often end up attracting hefty bids from teams, leaving everyone surprised. The IPL has been a platform for young, talented players to showcase their skills and earn big contracts. It is a testament to the level of talent and competitiveness in the sport. The bidding wars that unfold during the auction can also lead to frenzied moments of excitement and tension. There have been instances where teams have aggressively pursued a player, only to be outbid at the last moment by a rival team. These nail-biting moments create a dramatic atmosphere and add to the thrill of the event. The Rising Stars and Dark Horses One of the most exciting aspects of the IPL Auction is the emergence of rising stars and dark horses who make a name for themselves. These are players who might not have garnered much attention before the auction but end up becoming heroes for their respective teams. These rising stars bring fresh energy and enthusiasm to the tournament, and their performances often surprise both fans and experts. Their success stories inspire aspiring cricketers and serve as a reminder that the IPL Auction is not just about the big names but also about the underdogs who defy expectations and make their mark. The Impact of Surprise Picks Surprise picks in the IPL Auction can have a significant impact on the success of a team. These picks often provide a unique dynamic to the team's strategy and can change the course of a match or even an entire tournament. Teams that can identify talent beyond the obvious choices and take calculated risks in bidding for surprise picks can gain a significant advantage. 14th week at semewah
(30 October - 3 November)
Monday: Monday vibes with our regular assembly, but this week had a unique twist as the school geared up for Solidarity Week in support of Palestine. Captured the moment as our GPK, Puan Akmar, kicked off the program – check out the video on the feed. The week's agenda? Everything from coloring sessions to crafting the Palestine flag.
Tuesday: Spent Tuesday with my 2 Aura squad, and I decided to shake things up by taking them to the computer lab for a round of Kahoot. We dove into the wonders of the Australian Outback, and let me tell you, the energy was through the roof as we battled it out in Kahoot. Post-class, I switched gears to duty mode and kept a watchful eye over the canteen – duty teacher duties, you know the drill.
Wednesday: Midweek, back with 2 Aura, but surprise, surprise – a coloring program popped up for Solidarity Week with Palestine. Instead of sticking to the lesson plan, we jumped into the coloring action, and it turned into a collaborative masterpiece.
Thursday: Thursday rolled in with a mix of relief classes – talk about a juggling act, watching over multiple classes simultaneously. Exhausting, sure, but it's all hands on deck when there's a shortage of teachers.
Friday: Finally, the week wrapped up with a Yassin and Qunut Nazilah program for Solidarity Week. Stepped into my role as the event photographer, capturing every moment and soaking in the powerful atmosphere. The grand finale? Teachers were asked to get artsy, dipping their palms in paint to create the Palestine flag. Pure excitement – can't wait to see how it turns out! Stay tuned for more on the stories. 🌍✨ #SolidarityWeek #SchoolLife
Radio is my bomb? : 2003 : the DAB digital radio customer complaint hotline, The Radio Authority
The Bomb Squad arrived in vans, ran into the Holborn office block and up its staircase to the eighth floor. We watched events unfold from the car park below, the assembly point to which our organisation of forty-odd people had been evacuated an hour earlier.
That humdrum morning had been interrupted by a large cardboard box delivered by Royal Mail to our office. It was not particularly heavy but had lots of stamps on the outside with a ‘Belfast’ postmark. If you were a celebrity or public figure whose opinions were widely distributed, you might anticipate threats would occasionally be made against your life. If you had a desk job in a little-known British government quango, your greatest work challenge might normally be choosing where to lunch. However, that morning, the box’s addressee Soo Williams was taking no chances. The emergency services were called.
Eventually, the ‘suspicious package’ was removed by ordnance experts and exploded elsewhere. It was found to contain nothing but paper. Printed petitions signed by hundreds of Belfast citizens demanding that religious community radio stations be licensed locally. Williams’ name had been written on the box due to her recent promotion by The Radio Authority to manage the launch of ‘community radio’. Returning to our desks after the false alarm, I ruminated what those god-fearing citizens who had toiled to gather so many signatures might have thought of having been suspected by the recipient of being terrorists.
That morning’s event exemplified the disconnect between the regulator of the radio industry and the public it was supposed to serve. Someone with an interest in the UK community radio movement would have known that tiny unlicensed radio stations had existed for years on both sides of the Irish border, broadcasting church services and information to their communities. Indeed, one history argues that the Catholic Church in Ireland was “the world’s largest pirate radio operator”. However, few of The Radio Authority’s desk-bound administrators demonstrated interest in the medium they were employed to regulate. I was the only employee to have worked in a community radio station (licensed in a 1970’s experiment), having been a founder member of the Community Radio Association two decades previously. But now, within this dysfunctional workplace, I was regarded as the office junior … at the age of forty-four.
Back at my desk, I returned to taking regular phone calls from members of the public dissatisfied with the new-fangled DAB ‘digital radio’ receiver they had just purchased. I never quite understood why the switchboard regularly passed such calls to me, as I bore no responsibility for DAB radio, and my colleagues in the Development office suffered no such impositions. It was already self-evident to me that the rollout of this new radio technology had been disastrous for listeners, though I was expected to defend the system, and worse … to blame the listener for its inadequacies.
Staff were issued with a ‘helpful’ sheet of topics to raise with complainants about DAB. Suggestions to be made to members of the public experiencing difficulties tuning into stations on their new receiver included:
move your radio nearer a window
listen to the radio in an upstairs room
your residence might be constructed of the wrong materials
your residence might be located in a valley
your residence might be located in a dense urban area
your residence might be in an apartment block or a basement
you may need to install a rooftop antenna.
Many callers were understandably baffled and annoyed by these ‘answers’ to their problems, proffering a torrent of abuse or hanging up. Many had spent around £90 on a portable DAB receiver and expected it to deliver what the industry’s marketing had promised – ‘crystal clear’ reception of a wide choice of radio stations. The most popular receiver, the ‘Pure Evoke-1’, had been designed to be portable and had no socket to even attach the suggested external antenna, let alone the connectivity to update and improve its software. And why did it resemble a wooden post-war radio in an era when connected mobile phones were looking increasingly futuristic?
One of my callers’ commonest gripes was the result of DAB radios having been marketed and sold nationwide, even though many parts of Britain had yet to be connected to the DAB transmission system. In this instance, all I could suggest was that the consumer return their receiver to the shop and demand a refund because no digital stations were yet audible locally. I too shared this problem because, although The Radio Authority had denied me its Christmas cash bonus in 2002, I had received the DAB radio gifted to all staff. It remained in its box as I was living in Brighton, where DAB transmissions had yet to arrive.
The root of the dissatisfaction with DAB radio was not the technology itself, which had been a smart European innovation, but the way it had been implemented by Britain. Those critical roll-out decisions had been made by people like the ones in my workplace: administrators who had no experience working within the radio industry, encouraged by technologists keen to promote anything ‘digital’ with an evangelical fervour, oblivious as to whether consumer demand was evident. At the top of this unholy group of conspirators were government civil servants who mistakenly believed that Britain and British industry could dominate global markets by adopting a technological standard in which the rest of the world had shown scant interest. Meetings of this cabal seem to have merely intensified their cult-like determination.
The stumbling block their paper plan faced was the disinterest of the commercial radio industry itself which, at that time, was profitable and had expressed no dissatisfaction with its existing, robust FM radio transmission system. When The Radio Authority advertised the first national DAB multiplex licence in 1988, it faced the very real possibility that no radio companies would submit bids. To avoid this embarrassment, the regulator had to ‘strongarm’ Britain’s largest radio group into making the only application. GWR Group plc’s then chief executive Ralph Bernard later admitted:
“GWR was encouraged to apply for the national [digital] licence, and was under some pressure to invest in the opportunities for a national licence from the then regulator [The Radio Authority]. Had we not done it, there would be no national DAB platform now. Not only that, [the regulator] did not know what they would have done on the question of national radio stations with regard to the opportunities given by the then government to renew their national licences for a further period of time if they were to commit to going digital. But how can you [do that] if there are no opportunities to go digital because there is no national multiplex? When I put that question to The Radio Authority, I was told that the answer was: ‘We don’t know what would happen – there is no Plan B’. It was just an assumption that someone would go for [the national DAB multiplex].”
“When we were seduced into believing that this was going to be the only [national digital] licence, we realised that there would be substantial losses, but the payback would be when you have the opportunity to be the only player in the national market for DAB. When it’s The Radio Authority, an agency of government, you tend to believe what you are told. On that basis, the investment was justified and, at the time, getting it through my Board was not easy.”
Having rescued the regulator from potential embarrassment in its ill-judged pursuit of the DAB dream, Bernard naturally now held some sway over The Radio Authority and its decisions. There evidently did exist such a thing as a free lunch for its senior managers when Bernard would invite them to The Ivy restaurant in anticipation of outcomes coincidentally beneficial to his business. On two occasions at the regulator, my actions threw a spanner into this cosy relationship and I suffered consequences (written up here and here) from my bosses, despite me having acted in what I believed was the public’s interest. I learnt to my professional cost that I was supposed to be a ‘civil servant’ to commercial interests, not to our citizens.
How did the story end for commercial radio? Badly. GWR Group plc’s subsequent merger with Capital Radio Group plc, both profitable public companies prior to their investment in DAB, proved a financial disaster, their DAB assets were divested for a song, an offshore investor acquired the merged business and Bernard exited the industry. This tragedy was repeated in the lower echelons of the radio business when the entire UK commercial radio industry had to be rescued by private investors. Most local radio stations that had existed since the 1970’s were replaced by national ‘brands’. Local content all but disappeared. Thousands of radio professionals lost their jobs.
How did the story end for DAB radio? Even worse. In a presentation I was commissioned to make to the board of the second largest radio group in 2012, I predicted that the government would kick the much heralded ‘digital radio switchover’ date into the long grass. I was pooh-poohed by the company’s technologists at the meeting, but my predictions came to pass … while theirs turned to dust. Naturally, I was never invited back. British commercial radio’s enormous investment in the disastrous DAB platform impoverished the entire sector, reducing it to little more than a jukebox music service for listeners who lacked Spotify accounts.
The deluded dream finally died in 2016 when ‘Pure Digital’, the ‘great white hope’ of British designed DAB radio receivers (though manufactured in China), was sold to Austrian company Aventure AB for £2.6m, following its £7.9m loss during 2015/6 as a result of declining sales and its "significant stock" of unsold radio inventory so old that it "needs to be assessed for risk of obsolescence."
With the advantage of hindsight, the entire DAB debacle now seemed like a rehearsal for the similar self-harm caused by Brexit a decade later. Men in suits with little or no experience of working in the real world of commerce pursued a fever dream regardless of its practicality, oblivious to its outcomes but buoyed by their mistaken sense of superiority. Their project was to foist a uniquely ‘British’ solution on the population that would purposefully diverge the UK from the rest of the world (British DAB radios would not even function in France). Their words and documents were stuffed with misinformation and downright lies that supposedly supported their theories. Without their posh accents, they could have been mistaken for used car dealers.
Despite the wilful destruction of the commercial radio sector’s economic value, talent, creativity and public service that they had fomented, many of Britain’s DAB ‘protagonists’ went on to be lauded with industry awards, honours and lucrative jobs. For anyone who followed the Brexit disaster, it will sound like all too familiar a story.
I would say, based on this clip, that Druck is targeting a younger demographic than it used to. Some other thoughts:
As the social media manager confirmed yesterday, the topic of SA won't be touched upon this season! I was quite sure yesterday that this is what they were going for, so I had to recalibrate a bit.
So, I would say that Mailin likes Finn and, it feels like, has liked him for quite a while.
Fatou and Mailin are done revising for the upcoming Bio final. Fatou asks Mailin to see if Ava and Nora have any plans. Nora says Finn is throwing a party because his family is gone for the weekend. This makes Mailin sit up straight, and ask if only Nora and Josh are invited or anyone can come. Nora's like, "I mean I'm sure everyone's gonna be there lol?"
Mailin tells Fatou, who's like, "okay let's go!" Mailin asks if Finn will actually want them there since he didn't invite them directly. Fatou's like, "uh I'm sure as Kieu My's girlfriend, I'm automatically invited." She reassures Mailin that he didn't tell them directly because he probs understood the invite would make the rounds through his social circle.
Then Mailin is like, "UGH I don't have anything to wear!" Fatou's like, "why am I in a 13-year old show all of a sudden?" But then she picks up a top of Mailin's we've already seen and says that looks cute. Mailin's like, "Cute?!" as if she doesn't want to look cute, but maybe HOT, or smart, or something, idk.
Then they talk about where they're going to get the booze, if they're going to buy beer or borrow some of Mailin's mom's booze. Fatou thinks mom-booze is better because they won't get a hangover.
Cue the usual s1 girl squad assemble montage. This clip is very, very reminiscent of s1 vibes. It doesn't come across so much as the vibes we got from s2-s4, but more like, "omg going to a party for the first time with my girlfriendsssss and the guy I like is gonna be there!!!"
We get a quick look at the side characters like Isi's boyfriend who gets a line, and Lou who asks where the kitchen is. This is my first time seeing Lou in a clip and she was just so amazing at asking where the kitchen was. 5/5 stars.
Ava talks with some guy who knows Finn from boxing. S4 reference! Kieu My and Fatou are harassing Finn and asking him to box. Finn looks at Mailin all embarrassed and says not now. Then he says he does a kind of boxing that is more spiritual, mind and body. (Chess boxing apparently.)
Dance scene, but Mailin is in the sidelines. Finn comes over and they kind of hang around without saying anything. Mailin asks where Josh and Nora are. (Are they FUCKING?) No, they're just getting them pizzas. Mailin's all, "omg I could eat a pizza right now... Even though I ate earlier." Finn says that eating is the best way to relieve the stress from the exams, because he's not some kind of floozy who brings up orgasms at every opportunity I suppose. Mailin is very touched by this.
Mailin raids Finn's fridge and continues drinking. Suddenly she's like sloppy drunk. Now she's with Isi, Kieu My and Fatou. They're playing FMK. Isi's bf doesn't know what FMK is or how it works because he actually grew up in a cult and only recently has managed to leave. (Cult survivor rep!) In all actuality, it's probs because Druck's younger demographic who's only now tuning in, might not know what FMK is.
Anyway Mailin is asked to choose between Isi and a couple other people. She's like, "Fuck no one! And marry no one because that's such an outdated institution jdvhdjv omg I'm so dunrk right now..." (Edit: LOU takes this moment to be like, "right on, sister!" My god how I wish Lou broke free of the Sporty Spice chokehold and hit on Ava or something...)
Finn shows up with a hotdog and it's like, "it's just a game, you don't fuck or marry or kill anyone for real." Mailin says that he did actually kill the pig in his hand. Wow, this banter is really getting me going. Finn's like, "yeah I guess you're right..." And then Isi's like, "I CANNOT TAKE THIS SEXUAL TENSION ANYMORE. Finn, FMK? Angela Merkel (Isi you're so out of date, is Olaf Scholz too good for you?), myself, or Mailin?" Isi also apologizes to her bf, because, having grown up in a cult, he doesn't realize this is just a game and Finn won't proceed to fuck Isi immediately.
Anyway, Finn looks like a deer caught in headlights. Kieu My's like, "you've already killed the pig so who do you want to fuck COME ON." Mailin realizes she cares a bit too much about the answer despite her strict no fuck and no marriage policy, gets queasy and goes to barf in the bathroom. Unfortunately we don't get to know if Finn is crushing on Mailin back!
Recovering from knee surgery has been wildly uneventful.
I won’t be back at work for a while, I won’t be back at school for a while, but I will be sitting in one place with no obligations beyond cell regeneration for the coming week-ish, so that’s given me some perfectly allotted time to paint minis. So check it out!
After maybe 5 actual months, my first post featuring these Intercessors being on Dec 28th, I have finally fucking finished painting them. Many of them lack bases and need some cleanup and matte varnish, but all of the lads assembled and nuln’d up.
There’s a noticeably thicker darkness with my newer ones as I’ve sort of been leaning into a dirty proto-grimdark style as of late. Perhaps not intentionally— I ruined the brush I had been using for black lining. But hey, it still looks neat. I quite enjoy the grittiness. Not quite battle scarred and disgusting a la my CSM, but not quite ‘eavy metal perfect, either.
This is Sergeant Arctos, the fledgling Sergeant in command of Squad Arctos for the Sadrian Crusade. He’s a wonderful Astartes, but he’s had a bit of a rough time adjusting to a leadership position due to lack of confidence, despite his promising prospects. As such, he’s been placed in command of an Intercessor squad as a test of his mettle. Just realizing that I forgot to paint his helm gold. Fuuuuckkk.
Arctos wields a power sword that belonged to a felled brother who he was very close with during the Indomitus Crusade. He venerates this sword as a personal relic and uses it as backup in the most dire of situations, so as to immortalize how his brother would always have his back during their battles.
all of our sergeants hangin’ out, all nice and painted
Arctos isn’t nearly as confident as Brother Cambarn, the Bladeguard Sergeant, or as mature as Brother Taranis, the venerable Devastator Sergeant, but him and his men are the future of the Chapter, and he is hungry to prove himself a Thunderbearer worthy of merit.
And speaking of Sergeants…
This is Sergeant Verios, the other Intercessor Sergeant of the 1st Calthradian Crusade. Brother Verios served as an Infiltrator Sergeant during the Indomitus Crusade. His squads racked up an uncouth amount of enemy and specialized in ambushes and assassination. When he was asked about the Crusade, Verios requested he be placed in charge of a standard Intercessor squad. Chapter Command obliged, but the battleline squad he was placed in charge of was almost exclusively made up of unblooded Intercessors. Perhaps they’re hoping that Verios may instill into the fledglings a ruthlessness similar to his own, so as to properly prepare them for the Chapter’s bloody future? Regardless, Verios wears the Infiltrator helmet he wore during the Gale Sicane so as to never forget his warrior origins. Verios also wields a chainsword, which he praised for its efficient, flesh-decimating simplicity.
I’ve split up my ten man Intercessor squad into two five man squads for tactical reasons. Arctos leads one, Verios leads another. They are quite opposite individuals. Where Arctos is deliberate, heroic, often hesitant and even kind, Verios is decisive, efficient, and merciless. Despite their differences they share a good rapport, complimenting each other well on the battlefield and having respect for one another as peers.
Here’s our Crusade in its current form. It feels SO goddamn GOOD to have everything nearly finished. I need to clean things up, base a lot of men, and finish two more minis, including our HQ, and then the 1st Calthradian Crusade is DONEZO. The Thunderbearers are really coming alive and it’s a joy to see, especially considering this is how they started:
Stay tuned for more of the Emperor’s storm. Maybe some more Dreadnought shenanigans soon. Maybe some Eradicators. We cookin’. Ciao.
