Preliminaries have begun!

While I seed a proper bracket and figure out what to do with Jonathan Sims and his 40 submissions, enjoy the single-submission preliminaries!

There were 121 characters with a single submission, most won't make into a bracket, but there were a few I couldn't pass up.

Characters are chosen for the single-submission preliminaries based on potential for fun or silly match-ups, particularly compelling arguments from submitters, and (in the interest of full transparency), a little nepotism on my part.

i'm pretty sure i've made a similar post, but it really annoys tf out of me how people in the 🥭 comments act like taewon from "meteor orbit" is evil incarnate.

like i'm more or less pretty vanilla-leaning when it comes to BL and i hate toxic/problematic ML's like the next guy, but taewon is literally bottom of the barrel toxic. like the reasoning behind his actions was made very clear to the audience, yet people still act like he had nothing but the worst intentions towards yusung when it's so obvious that he loved/cared for yusung and wanted to protect him.

these people love to look over the trauma that taewon has endured at the hands of mr. kim. also, they look over the fact that this all started when he was still young. of course he's going to make dumb decisions.

plus, while the other members of the group are cute and i don't hate them, they aren't nearly as compelling as love interest, like i'm sorry (not sorry). they clearly act like little kids who want attention, and i'm convinced people only go so hard for them because they hate/dislike taewon 🙄

obsesseddddd w how normal's character is going... she's kinda demon girl adjacent now. her demon features are hidden under her helmet so no one really knows aside from her friends. she's always wearing her helmet. she wipes her forehead sweat but wipes the helmet rather than her actual forehead. her horns are made of plush fabric. her best friends are an unfriendly british catboy with poison magic & impostor syndrome & their shared amnesiac former shitty boss who's also a fishperson alien who was exiled from their home planet but they don't remember. she canonically got her pronouns & gender by buying a pronoun pin at a hot topic. her introduction was her committing identity theft. the person whose identity she stole is fine with it because it's funny. her twin brother is also fine with it because it's funny. she keeps habits & speech quirks from the people whose identities she steals. she has a chip in her body that will blow her up if she doesnt punch things regularly enough. shes the jod of woman tiddy wednesday. and her name is normal

we're now far enough past the major 2016-18 tumblr Discourse Era that I fairly often see people posting retrospectively about branches of it, both in a poking-fun way ("if you're seriously still mad about asexuals in queer spaces then I mean this deeply: get a life") and a more serious way ("the 'su critical' community was an astounding display of ridiculous double-standards for diverse media"), but I rarely see people step back and address what I think was the root of it: these harassment movements weren't just silly teen leftist infighting, for basically every big weird tumblr discourse back then that made you go "hang on this sounds like a basic conservative talking point with some vocab swapped out," you could almost always trace it back to a source from the 2014-16 online fascism boom. prominent transmed youtubers were consistently vocal republicans, "q slur" discourse came to us by way of terfs, the first crop of popular "su critical" videos were explicitly fascistic, etc., and all those discourse cycles can still be clearly felt in the today's topical tumblr tussles.
