I decided that I still quite like it, so I reformatted it to better match what was originally going on in my head. OKAY i finally made up my mind on Toni (he/him) lore!!

Toni used to be a maid in da tower, he's made of dough and cheese. He cleans n whatever, would frequently bug Pepperman to draw his "ideal" body for him. He was completely obsessed with the macho aesthetic and was miserable he looked nothing like how he felt on the inside. He was a big guy in his head!!

So he bails to hide in the deepest corners of the basement and meticulously craft himself into his ideal self. His body is pretty moldable! Though he needed more mass to gain all that height and muscle. So he'd yoink any cheese slimes that made the mistake of crossing his path.

He's not an 'official' tower boss by any means. Pizza Head doesn't even realize Toni's down there, and the other bosses aren't really aware he transitioned. He IS however VERY curious about this Peppino guy storming through the tower... a worthy opponent to test if his body's ready for debut!!

ANYWAY uh Peppino kicks his ass or whatever. He's absolutely enamored by the weird italian guy. Thinks he's the peak of masculinity and refuses to stop following him around. Eventually bags a job at Peppino's since he's kinda homeless what with the tower, uh, collapsing. You know how it goes.

I like to think for the other bosses Toni would only really get along well with Pepperman, both pre- and post- transition. While he's not the brightest Toni does admire Pepperman's art. Plus he was pretty much the only person in the tower Toni felt comfortable talking about his ideal self with. I think Vigilante wouldn't like how loud he is, and Noise would either just get him riled up or he'd be too thickheaded to be fun to prank. I don't know how Fake Peppino would feel about him... I don't think FP would like how he smells. But otherwise it might be okay.

Peppino helps Toni be more vulnerable!! Toni feels a constant pressure to extrude this macho energy, the loudest and most violent person in the room. Peppino helps Toni see he can be just as much a man without having to be so aggressive. He can lean on others too. (-:

A Case Study in Using Tumblr Blaze to Collect Survey Data

A little while ago, I ran a very niche survey about the vernacular names used for a specific type of North American bug, and I used Tumblr Blaze to try to get more survey responses. I figure that others who’d consider using Blaze to promote surveys might want to know how it went, so here's a graph of the number of survey submissions, with the “Blazed” periods highlighted in dotted orange:

Additional details below the cut.

Response Numbers: Between 4/17 (when I first posted the survey) and 4/30 (when I analyzed data for it), I received a total of 291 responses.

There were 14 responses in the first 24 hours after I posted the survey (before Blazing the post related to it).  For all subsequent days that the post was not Blazed, I received between 0 and 2 additional responses. By contrast, I received 145 responses during the first Blaze period and 110 responses during the second Blaze period. It isn't possible to definitively know exactly how many responses can be attributed to Blazing the post, but from this data, I'm comfortable assuming that it's a large majority of the responses.

The Blazed post: I exclusively advertised the relevant survey on Tumblr, and with one, specific post. The post itself was nothing fancy—just a quick description of the survey and some emojis, basically. It looked like this:

I’ve left the survey running (although I don’t promise I’ll analyze new data for it), so if you would like to complete it, you may do so here (NOTE: the survey contains a photo of a bug). Current results for the survey are also available here (NOTE: the results post also contains a photo of a bug).            

Blaze information: Both times that I Blazed the post, I purchased the second tier level (which provides 7,000 estimated impressions, although in both cases, the actual impressions ended up being ~10k, per the post-Blaze summary reports). I also opted to specifically target a US audience.

Data quality: One worry I had about Blazing my survey was that I’d get a bunch of joke responses or (worse) harassment, but that fortunately did not happen. I can't know for sure just how honest any individual respondent was, but the overall pattern of results was plausible and suggested there wasn't any widespread bad-faith responding. One respondent gave a clear joke answer, but that was it.

Conclusions: It’s hard to express this honestly without sounding like an ad, but I had a generally positive experience Blazing my survey. As someone with a very small blog, Tumblr Blaze helped me get enough survey responses to crunch some numbers on my (perhaps aggressively niche) project idea, which I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to do. I didn’t receive a staggering amount of data or anything, and the response rate I got might not be worth the cost for all projects, but it served its purpose for me. All in all, I'd say it's at least worth considering for anyone interested in running an informal survey without having a pre-existing audience to lean on.

In the terrifying scenario where i must eat cell or starve but am spoiled for choice on preparation, I'd first have to consider how the meat tastes. Sure I could make a comparison to human flesh, but Cells traits from other races clearly outpaces that, so I don't think he'd taste like that.i dont know that he would taste like how bugs usually taste, as he is Massive and would hold different qualities. People often say some predators dont taste as good as herbivores and omnivores due to the lack of fat on their bodies and the more lean muscles, and Cell strikes me as similar lack of fat deposits, and I think he'd probably be pretty gamey. Juice depends on if he's well fed or not. Semi perfect would i think taste better than the other two. Mandolin thinks the meat is tasteless but good, but in general is more about the crunch of his carapace against his teeth

Anyways. Prep of the tail or the arm, I prefer thinner cuts of meat or steaks, i have to imagine neither limb is that good. What if we did carpaccio

Hellloooo, sweet anon! Of course I can give a mini tutorial on that for you! :3 PHEW, honestly I haven't made GIFs in a fucking hot minute (since early May!). I put that on the back burner to focus on crunching away that writer's block. 🥲🙄 BUT... Making GIFs is like second nature to me because I've been at it for 2 years now, so allow me to tell you all I know! ❤️

I use Adobe Photoshop 2023! My GIFs are started, edited, cooked and finished all up in there. I know there's plenty of cheaper/free alternatives, but I've literally only ever used Photoshop so I have zero experience with those alternatives. 🥲

Remember, a huge part of how smooth and high quality your GIFs are gonna be is 95% where your GIF source is coming from. Stay away from 720p quality files! You want your GIF screencaps to be pulled from the most HD, crisp source material. At least 1080p unless you absolutely can't get your hands on anything else.

Once you pop open Photoshop, you want to follow...

Click "File"

Click "Scripts"

Click "Load files into stack..."

Now select all of your GIF screencaps. I would recommend a maximum of 85 screencaps otherwise your GIF will be longer/beefier and Tumblr for some reason hates GIFs over 10mb.

Wait for it to load! If your computer is older/slower, this might be a pain in the ass and will be 2x a pain in the ass if you have a high screencap amount.

CROPPING YOUR GIF: Select W x H x Resolution on the top bar.

It's honestly best to crop out as close to the edges as possible for the sharpest gifs. A general rule of thumb I like to follow for cropping/GIF sizing is:

One gif: 540 px x 400 px.

2 gifs side by side: 268 px each.

3 gifs side by side: 177 px, 178 px, 177 px.

Hit enter twice to crop!

Once your GIF screencaps are loaded in, click on "Create Video Timeline" on the "Timeline" option. If you can’t see the Timeline > Window > Timeline.

Click on the stack of 3 small lines on the far right of your Timeline and click "Convert to Video Timeline".

8. Click on those 3 lines again and click on "Make Frames From Layers".

9. Click on those 3 lines again and click "Select All Frames".

10. Click on the 3 lines again and click "Reverse Frames" otherwise your GIF will play backwards!!

11. Then you'll notice all your frames like this showing 0 seconds.

Now you get to decide how fast or slow you want your GIF to play, but we're not using whole numbers like 1 2 3 4. Those will make your GIFS incredibly choppy and slow. Instead, we use numbers like 0.01. I would recommend sticking to 0.05 or 0.06. The higher the number, the slower it is. 0.06 feels just right to me, but 0.05 is more like watching the clip live from the movie. I also use 0.07 and 0.08 when I try to GIF a screencap that's very short so unfortunately you have to slow it down otherwise your GIF zoom replays and if you're making a GIF set it'll look horrible next to the other ones going at normal speed LMAO. 0.08 is a good, sensual slow motion type of GIF. Definitely play around with the speeds until you feel comfortable with how your GIF plays out. Not all GIFs are made with equal speed!

For my example, I'm choosing 0.06.

12. Next, go to the far right where your screencaps are all layered and select every single one of them from top to bottom. Then, right click on any random layer until this menu pops up. Click "Convert to Smart Object".

13. On your Timeline, you'll get your smushed chunky little GIF looking like this.

Now with my extensive experience in navigating Tumblr's hellish rules for GIF size and keeping my GIFS clean, smooth and not too long or not too short, I can easily eyeball this every time but I can see why a beginner with Photoshop GIFs might struggle. You see how big that purple block, AKA your GIF, is? It basically needs to be half of that. The bigger that block, the longer/beefier the GIF.

Slowly drag your mouse over that purple block from start to finish to watch your GIF essentially manually play out in front of you. Then you can decide what parts to trim out using the scissors option.

You can then click anywhere on the Timeline to unselect those now 2 chunks of purple. Then you can select just the one piece you want to delete and either hit the backspace key on your keyboard (Like I do) or right click it and click delete.

14. Next, make sure you drag that little blue arrow thing that lets you comb through the GIF all the way back to the beginning. We're going to edit the actual GIF now and we want to edit the whole thing from start to finish, not have effects randomly playing right before the GIF ends or in the middle of it.

15. Time to sharpen up that GIF as the first part of our editing and make it pretty!!

Click on lower left convert button to Convert from Frame Animation to Video Timeline.

Select > All Layers.

CTRL + click on any Layer > Select Convert to Smart Object.

16. Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen.

A little menu will pop up and you can select/input these defaults I use for my crispy GIFs:

Preset: CUSTOM.

Amount: 500%.

Radius: 0.4 PX.

Remove: GAUSSIAN BLUR.

Once more...

Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen again only this time for the second Smart Sharpening, make the attributes:

Amount: 10%.

Radius: 10 PX.

17. Colouring the GIFs!

If you don’t have Adjustments tab > Window > Adjustments.

Adjustments > Exposure.

Another little menu will pop up, and you can use my defaults:

Preset: CUSTOM.

Exposure: 0.99

Offset: 0.0000

Gamma Correction: 1.00

Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast.

Brightness: *anything you want* Drag your mouse around to play with how you want this to look, there are no set numbers however you might want to note down the amount of brightness you put or took away if you want all of your GIFs to match this one!

Contrast: *anything you want*

18. Colouring GIFs when skintones or scenes are too orange/red:

Adjustments > Selective Color.

Colors: REDS.

Cyan: +6.

Magenta, Yellow, Black: 0.

The reds result in the orange color to begin with, but remember each color has its own counterpart. To decrease red tones, increase the cyans!

Example: Making a blue dress more vibrantly blue à Adjustments > Selective Color.

19. Adding text.

Remember, text layers should be on top of the rest of your layers, even if you have several pieces of text on the GIF. It doesn't matter in which order you stack text layers on top, they just have to be up there.

Click Text Tool on the lefthand bar and then click wherever you want to add the text.

To change text settings on a panel > Window > Character.

18-20 pt font is suitable for 540 px gifs! It's to use Calibri font in italics for text talking or Myriad Pro. Those are GIF text classics.

Right click on Text Layer > Blending Options > Stroke > + Stroke.

Size: 1 px.

Position: OUTSIDE.

Blend Mode: NORMAL.

Then hit OK.

Right click on Text Layer > Blending Options > Drop Shadow > Drop Shadow +.

Once again, right click on Text Layer > Blending Options > Stroke > + Stroke.

Blend Mode: NORMAL.

Angle: 30 > Use Global Light.

Distance: 1 px.

Spread: 17%.

Size: 3 px.

Noise: 0.

Layer Knocks Out Drop Shadow > OK.

To center and move the text, just press Y on your keyboard to use the move tool.

20. Finishing up the GIF!

File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy). Check bottom left corner of save screen for GIF size.

Do not go over 10MB EXACTLY! Otherwise Tumblr won't let you post it. You'll have to go back and shorten your GIF as a result, even if that means just splitting the clip off at the very end or very beginning.

Religion and fiction have all shown their ideas of the afterlife, and they're always so scary and painful if you get something wrong.

Reapsy: But I don't think people ever stop to wonder 'What if it isn't all that?' The idea of eternal punishment was MADE to scare people into doing good, but it just scares people into being terrified of the natural world.

Blobby: Like how movies made people scared of Sharks? Even though they aren't that bad?

Reapsy: Exactly. Death has become a shark in the minds of so many people. They think they might be able to outswim the horrifying monster, when in reality, they never can, and the monster doesn't even want to hurt them.

I find that as a social worker, I have to constantly be consciously examining my own views and holding them accountable to myself and my beliefs. I cannot effectively operate as a social worker in the modern era if I hold any biases that may modify my ability to work with someone in a negative way. Even though I am a stark leftist and a quite loud ACAB type in my personal life, I have to provide the same care to cope and bigots that I would to my friends, because that’s what ethical practice dictates I do.

I’m not here to be all “I’m just a social worker, I can’t legally kill someone and get a paid vacation for it and I spend way more time holding my implicit biases accountable than cops do”, but I am here to say that even though I spend as much time and effort being on top of that aspect of myself as I do, I still find myself developing new implicit biases based on my experiences. A running joke in college was basically “fuck everyone doing (unnamed degree”, it stemmed from many people doing that degree coming from a place of privilege, actively being allowed to break rules the rest of us weren’t because they bought the school and college so much money, and generally being loud and obnoxious at all times, and even though it was a sincere joke at the time I still find myself thinking more negatively of anyone or thing that might be associated with that degree in ways that surprise myself.

I cannot imagine the insane degree of implicit biases that exist in law enforcement and legal practice that are just allowed to flourish because the people therein are not expected to unpack their shit. Among most people it doesn’t really matter, but if your job can positively or negatively affect the quality of life of others, you should be continuously unpacking your shit and working through your implicit biases. I can nearly guarantee that the actions of nurses who go unchecked regularly lead to poorer medical treatment and even deaths on the regular because when it comes to crunch time and you’re burned out as fuck because you’ve been working 16 hours straight on a nap you took in a broom closet, the people you’re going to prioritise care for are the people you don’t have implicit biases or prejudices against. Same goes for other fields where it’s way more obvious; cops regularly kill people who appear black way more than they kill people who appear white, people who appear and behave Christian or catholic regularly get lighter sentences in court compared to people who don’t (intersectionality and other factors do apply here though), hell facial tattoos alone, regardless of what the tattoo is, what it’s cultural significance is or how well it’s done, regularly leads to worse treatment across the board. One of my personal favourite examples, purely because no one ever thinks of it, is that real estate agencies in the state I live in are far more likely to cater to young, white passing het couples with kids and offer them lower prices when buying a house than they are any other demographic, even though it‘s specifically illegal in this state for rental agencies to discriminate against sex, gender, race, age, pregnancy, and a list of other factors.

Anyway this got kinda off topic because I started infodumping, and the formatting is fucked because of the gift of tumblr mobile, but anyway

TL;DR: implicit biases exist in every field, they can fuck up life for many people, and everyone can become a bigot even when they’re actively trying to not

Like if you think saying that people can be radicalized and manipulated into hate is somehow justifying it, yikes. And if you think that people are somehow just good or evil and that you are not at risk of buying into propaganda, have I got some very red flag news about that!

Idk if its because I am an older Millennial maybe (most who unfollowed were younger) but I watched a ton of that generation slide from one of the most progressive to the far right before my every eyes. Hell, my dad fought alongside his black friends in the Detroit race riots and now he watches Fox News 24/7 and talks about the border wall. Yet still claims he could never be racist because of how he used to be. He doesn’t even realize what he has become.

JKR isn’t a deluded old woman or innately evil, but in fact THE prime example of how well-meaning ignorance and privilege can be weaponized and encouraged down a pipeline, until it turns into a force of hate, and should be a cautionary tale about why educating and being open about these issues are necessary. Because there are those out there who will use those divisions and ignorance to their own ends. And just digging in our heels and saying “that could never be me!” is the very thing that puts you more at risk. I’ve lost so many loved ones down that pipeline and it is more slippery than most realize.

Stay alert, stay compassionate, stay humble, and make sure you move through life guided by reason rather than reaction. I love y’all and don’t want to see your passion twisted to get used against the world.

Dear Tumblr

You know that infuriating feeling when you need to get the daily word count in but the current book makes you want to puke? I had that kind of a day some weeks ago so I threw away any expectations of quality and spat out this. I hate how my best work always comes from me ceasing to give a shit. I can't control that!

The idea was to write about a man sitting at a coffee shop staring at a plant.

coffee shop AU for nothing in particular:

Drama, drama, drama. My family is a den of thieves and schemers. Not a day goes by without someone screwing someone else over. I need to leave the house to keep sane, but as a model, I instantly get recognised. Luckily a friend recommended a little place that I might find solise in.

I step into the quaint little coffee shop tucked away from the prying eyes of the world at the end of an alleyway, under a bridge, down the canal. It’s an awful place to put a business but excellent if one needs to disappear for a few hours. Despite the location, the place isn’t dingy at all. It’s warm and inviting, with soft wood tones and houseplants in every corner. Black pipes accent the shelves behind the counter, which itself is made of glass and dark oak. Behind it stands a barista who just a second ago looked about to fall asleep standing up, though now is wide awake and trying her best not to check me out. I’m relieved to realize there isn’t a hint of recognition behind her eyes, just pure aesthetic attraction. 

I approach the counter and give her an encouraging smile. After a split second hesitation, she returns one back. Her pearly white teeth contrast strongly against her black skin. I don’t pay attention to her looks beyond that. She isn’t my type, being a woman and all. 

“Got anything special for me?” I casually charm her.

“Oh, we are trying these new chocolate chip-almond cupcakes. Would you like one?” Her voice gives me a nanosecond of pause. It’s deep and even, and it catches my attention in a way nothing else about her does.

“Gladly. And a black coffee.”

The barista nods and turns to ring me up. I find a seat in the corner and watch as she works on my order. Since this place doesn’t get many customers, and the special is not that popular, she ends up having to disappear into the kitchen to get everything. When I finally get the plate in front of me, the smell of fresh baking overpowers even my black coffee.

As I bite into it, it’s soft and warm, and melting in my mouth, yet with a slight crunch from the almonds. It’s comforting, in a way I haven’t felt in ages. Almost nostalgic. A happy childhood full of smiles and running in the grass. It’s the joy of waiting for Christmas for a full month. A childhood I never even got to have. 

The taste is gone with the muffin too fast, and I’m left leaning on the backrest in my booth, quietly staring at the potplant next to me. It’s happy and healthy, though the long green leaves try their darndest to reach toward the only windows at the front.

Super late mass update

While I don't suppose a lot of people will read this, I'm pretty much dead everywhere besides discord at the moment [and even there I plan on taking a break] so a, belated, update is in order.

At this point my bird app account is pretty much abandoned and I don't wish to bother with reviving it at all so it's just waiting to rot and disappear, hopefully forever. There wasn't a lot of stuff there to begin with. Unless I decide to move somewhere else, tumblr will be my main platform of contact with people that don't share servers with me. Though I think I'll try my hand at a side art blog…

Anyway, this is a dev update so let's focus on games. Within the months of my inactivity and total radio silence here, a few games were created. Considering I have no idea how far back it should go, I'll start with my bird jam entry that I was a terrible lead for.

BIRD GAME

My total inability to assume responsibilities of my own work aside, the team did their job well. The actual story is finished and working and the only reason why the build has its current name is because I never went around to finish the GUI and the last CG properly and then disappeared for months due to personal reasons. As it stands, the story lacks nothing to enjoy it mostly as it was intended, though I may finally move my ass and update it. Just not now.

After that I took part in the creation of two projects for the queer edition of O2A2. One being a sequel of sorts to Annur's story, featuring Azazel. The other a very rushed personal project. Rushed only because I felt like making it at the moment and its quality only confirms that.

I won't really say much about either of them as due to the nature of the jam, they're naturally very short. I think both have around 700 words each? It would be cool if you checked Azazel out, though. That 'saga' might eventually get a third part. It's also pretty different from Annur's story, less horny and with a different artstyle… Or maybe just medium.

The newest creation is my submission to Orifice jam. Despite how it might sound, or maybe exactly because of that, the entries [planned ones included] are pretty cool. Not a lot of them at the moment of writing this post, though.

Both here and in my O2A2 short I decided to use the style that comes the most naturally to me. Maybe it wasn't a good idea, it's pretty avant garde and bizarro leaning, if I say so, though at the same time pretty normal and grounded. But those are my standards of normal, don't trust them. They're also chock-full of reference, although this time, based on the previous feedback, I tried explaining the most important ones. Everything else is still a bonus most likely no one would get. I just can't stop myself.

After that comes Mushroom jam which I'd recommend to join if you have even the slightest interest in the topic. It starts in september [technically august in almost all time zones] and is supposed to be as crunch free as possible, lasting three months and all. You can read the details on the page. It's a spiritual successor of Bird Jam and in a way OH jam as I ended up hosting a jam each year, always with a different theme, and plan to continue doing so, even if there ends up being close to no interest.

This also relates to my planned projects. As of now there are two main ones, one that I help with and is still a secret, two-three that I'd either finish someday or not and multiple "maybe if I get inspired to actually write" ones. Generally as long as it's written by me, it's likely to be on an unpopular topic or written in a way most people don't seem to like but as I have the most funn with these, well ¯_(ツ)_/¯ No one pays me for that, might as well.

Since there's no reason to disclose anything on the "maybe" category projects and the secret one, let's focus on the two main ones and these that probably should get finished.

Going by the chronology of planned releases, the first would be a some sort of SF story for sunofes playing with the idea of Agartha, Wanderers etc. I can't even promise what kind of mood it would have but given my lack of science skills, it would be closer to soft SF, if that's even a term that's used. Think analogous to soft fantasy but SF. Probably "interactive fiction" [actually kinetic, no choices, linear] with illustrations more so than vn as I wanted to write something longer than usual that's still moderately low effort. Not getting the urge to create custom gui really lessens the workload~~

The other project is for Spooktober, Mushroom jam or both. I kind of feel like it would be cheating, given the insignificant amount of fungi in the story but we'll see. Due to Spooktober rules, it's still in planning stage, though I'm starting design sketches. No idea if I manage to pull it off but I wanted to try something different style wise, with isometric view that changes depending on MC's mental state. It's honestly a lot of work for one person so I'm not even deluding myself I'll finish it for Spooktober, it would be just free exposure at this point :') Especially important as the SEO is going to be absolutely terrible and horrendous, being a yet another reference [created from two of my ideas that mutated and merged]. At least the non game results would explain what exactly was I referencing lol

If I actually manage to pull it off, it's gonna be the coolest looking of all my personal projects. Not that there's strong competition but still. Hope it works out.

From the stuff to finish, there's the above-mentioned bird game, Argousze and Red String Theory. RST's development doesn't exactly rely on my so it either remains a demo or the whole team gathers again to finish it. In the meantime I can draw my pretty boi Adisa whenever I want. As for Argousze, it's been close to three or four years since its initial release. I feel like I should finish it eventually, being ad short as it is but I kind of dislike the ending of the initial idea + had problems with designing aliens I liked so it either changes or gets a sequel/part with alien's pov as comparison, not sure yet. The pov change would have a completely different tone but would help me with my SoL sentai later on and as such requires further consideration. Hopefully it's finished before the fifth release anniversary passes.

Other than that there's some art etc related stuff going on but as it's not strictly dev related, I'll omit it. The whole post ended up quite long, as expected but that's what happens when you update people once a year. See you[?] next time.
