Okay first of all I am so sorry for the massively late response to this. I suck at names of fashiony things so when you sent me this my initial reaction was "!!!!!!! YOU'RE INTERESTED IN MY AU??" and then "oh how on earth am I going to do this".

I, uh. Still don't actually know what name to put on an aesthetic I'm assigning to him. But what I do have is a whole load of notes on Owen's clothing design in the au (and also Curt's, because they're idols in Splatoon and you can't design one without considering the other - they've got to work as a unit!).

So. More under the cut. Doubtless way too much, will totally get it if you don't read it haha

I also reserve the right to go back on any of this in the future since I may well look back on this and go "yeah that sounds dumb"

I suppose the TL;DR version of this is that he would wear a combination of the kind of street style clothes we see a lot of in Splatoon, more practical clothes like we see in SAF or more suited for rehearsals, and varying degrees of fancy formalwear for events. Under the cut is pretty much all of my ideas to do with the clothing design for Splatoon au curtwen haha

So - a bit of context, first, for anyone reading who doesn't know. The first thing about designing Owen's (and Curt's) wardrobe is that he is a performer in this au - he eventually becomes an internationally famous pop star, and along the way he co-hosts Inkopolis News and has a pretty decently successful acting career (Pretty much all theatre at the start and more film later on. I think Curt might do some TV around this time but more presenting-type gigs than drama).

On top of this, before the events of Octo Expansion, Owen is deliberately lying about/hiding things about his past. Unlike Pearl, who in canon seems to have assumed Marina was just an inkling with a weird fashion style iirc, Curt does understand that Owen is an octoling - but he assumes that he's from the Splatlands, and Owen takes this assumption and runs with that lie. He's hiding the fact that he is an Octarian - he is from an underground society who live in a series of connected bunkers (the Octarian Domes) because they lost a huge land war against the Inkadian inklings (Curt's grandparents' generation) a hundred years ago. (And, on top of that, he was a member of the Octarian military and was one of their best and brightest soldiers.)

The place where I started for thinking about this was considering the different brands available to the player in Splatoon and which ones Curt and Owen might have items from or particularly like to wear in their personal lives. They would both have quite a few items from Forge (Curt likes their jackets, Owen likes their headphones). Curt definitely likes Firefin's hoodies and jackets (Owen has their Blowfish Newsie hat), and the same with Skalop. Owen likes Krak-On for more casual clothing (he likes their funky embroidered jackets and waistcoats, and later on he's a big fan of their patterned jumpers when he feels more comfortable/safe), and he's also partial to Annaki and Toni Kensa for more flashy looks (I'm thinking of the two parashooters from Annaki and the front-zip vest item from Toni Kensa. He's probably done shoots with those two).

Okay moving into something slightly more tangible - Splatoon au Owen is such a Rockenberg guy. Rockenberg are a brand known for their footwear, particularly boots - they're the brand that makes Splatoon Doc Martens. Until a while after the events of Octo Expansion, Owen near-exclusively wears proper boots. (He might even get custom Rockenbergs for performing once their music career gets up and running, honestly.) No matter what, he always makes sure he is wearing footwear he can move in that is built to hold up to long distances. He needs them to last. Not for anything about his lifestyle, mind you - he has quite a lot of clothes (a mixture of Curt's influence, excitement, and being a celebrity), and while he does move around quite a lot, it isn't like he needs to hike anywhere. The real reason is that he feels he needs to be ready to get up and leave at a moment's notice. He always keeps a good amount of cash on him - very well hidden, of course - and keeps his boots on or nearby at all times so that when everything eventually comes crashing down around him, he can at least run. (He's convinced that if Curt ever finds out the truth about Owen's past, he'll want nothing to do with him.)

Anyway uhhhhhhhh right the most important outfit to come up with for these two: their signature performing outfits. Here's Pearl and Marina in theirs, for comparison:

However, my other idea (which might work a bit less well in relation to canon saf but I have nonetheless ended up getting attached to) is the idea that Curt has pants that are based on the design of the Jacket while Owen gets the Jacket itself (which is less iconic to saf because it takes Curt out of his iconic look, but is fun if you like the headcanon that the Jacket used to be Owen's). They could either both have the red and black colour scheme or have the pants/jacket both be black but have different accent colours like the Squid Sisters (probably blue and red in this case). I'm imagining that Curt probably wears a (kinda tight, Owen is a fan) light blue top - either a tank top or the one from saf - with some kind of pattern/design on it and maybe some kind of mesh top over it, while Owen wears slim red pants with a matching design to Curt's top. Can I properly envision how this looks 100% and if it looks good? Hell no but I like the idea.

I also think that, fashion-wise, overall, Owen can treat clothing with a bit of a costume mentality, if that makes sense. He's trying to look the part at all times, so he takes a lot of cues from what Curt thinks. This is both because he trusts Curt's judgement on the suitability/quality of an outfit (he has an eye for fashion and more experience with Inkopolis as a cultural/ig metropolitan reference point/background) and because Curt always picks clothes that will make Owen look good. (Owen is often pretty happy to go with Curt's ideas here, even when it's just to see the look on Curt's face when he's right about an outfit.)

I think that Owen's clothes range across a few different styles for different contexts as a result. I'm imagining there are some more street-style, typical Splatoon things (including both casual clothes and some performing clothes (e.g. the key outfit). Side note here that splatoon au curtwen are younger than their canon saf counterparts but a bit older than pearlina), some more practical things (maybe both more like he wears in saf and things he can wear to rehearsals (theatre and for with Curt)), and then some smarter things in a range of degrees of fanciness for more formal events.

As a brief note on some other specific outfits, I think their Octo Expansion outfits for when they go rescue Eight would be like their a1p1 outfits, just maybe with slightly more Splatoon proportions (and maybe more details/decoration on both jackets). I also think the idea of Owen's fit for Suffer No Fools being reminiscent of the DMA would be very funny (that's the song I keep referring to when I talk about pearlina doing the same kind of thing as curtwen in their a1p1 phone call with Cynthia).

I think Owen's Side Order fit might end up inspired by both Marina's Side Order fit and the SAF LA look. What I'm kind of imagining is to keep the rich coloured suit (a deep jewel tone blue or green, with his tentacles being the other colour - green allows for galaxy hair like Marina has in SO, but blue might make more sense for something I'm thinking of) but paired with a dress shirt in a lighter shade of the same colour with a few buttons open at the collar. I think it could be fun if their SO fits/world tour outfits were themed after the moon/sun and the earth.

For the final performance in Grand Festival, if they do the song Three Wishes in this au, I think it would be fun to take inspiration from "binary stardom" and have them both in star inspired fits - maybe some spikey details/accessories, maybe subtle constellation details in the glitter/rhinestones/sequins.

To end this post, I want to talk about a detail I like in Splatoon that I want to incorporate into this au. Here are Pearl and Marina's Springfest outfits:

What I want to highlight here is Pearl's t-shirt, since it has an octopus-tentacle design. I'm thinking that, either for their Springfest looks or for an updated version of their signature performing outfits (like around the time of Splatoon 3), instead of whatever pattern was previously on Curt's top and Owen's pants, they get a new pattern of octopus tentacles on Curt and squid tentacles on Owen. Both because I think it would look cool and because I think it would be very funny and gay of them to each have a design that looks like their boyfriend's tentacles on their tightest item of clothing. In a universe where they can be out and proud about their relationship and have the fans go wild for it I think they would in fact pull that.

Can I properly envision how this looks 100% and if it looks good? Hell no but I like the idea.

I also think that, fashion-wise, overall, Owen can treat clothing with a bit of a costume mentality, if that makes sense. He's trying to look the part at all times, so he takes a lot of cues from what Curt thinks. This is both because he trusts Curt's judgement on the suitability/quality of an outfit (he has an eye for fashion and more experience with Inkopolis as a cultural/ig metropolitan reference point/background) and because Curt always picks clothes that will make Owen look good. (Owen is often pretty happy to go with Curt's ideas here, even when it's just to see the look on Curt's face when he's right about an outfit.)

I think that Owen's clothes range across a few different styles for different contexts as a result. I'm imagining there are some more street-style, typical Splatoon things (including both casual clothes and some performing clothes (e.g. the key outfit). Side note here that splatoon au curtwen are younger than their canon saf counterparts but a bit older than pearlina), some more practical things (maybe both more like he wears in saf and things he can wear to rehearsals (theatre and for with Curt)), and then some smarter things in a range of degrees of fanciness for more formal events.

As a brief note on some other specific outfits, I think their Octo Expansion outfits for when they go rescue Eight would be like their a1p1 outfits, just maybe with slightly more Splatoon proportions (and maybe more details/decoration on both jackets). I also think the idea of Owen's fit for Suffer No Fools being reminiscent of the DMA would be very funny (that's the song I keep referring to when I talk about pearlina doing the same kind of thing as curtwen in their a1p1 phone call with Cynthia).

I think Owen's Side Order fit might end up inspired by both Marina's Side Order fit and the SAF LA look. What I'm kind of imagining is to keep the rich coloured suit (a deep jewel tone blue or green, with his tentacles being the other colour - green allows for galaxy hair like Marina has in SO, but blue might make more sense for something I'm thinking of) but paired with a dress shirt in a lighter shade of the same colour with a few buttons open at the collar. I think it could be fun if their SO fits/world tour outfits were themed after the moon/sun and the earth.

For the final performance in Grand Festival, if they do the song Three Wishes in this au, I think it would be fun to take inspiration from "binary stardom" and have them both in star inspired fits - maybe some spikey details/accessories, maybe subtle constellation details in the glitter/rhinestones/sequins.

To end this post, I want to talk about a detail I like in Splatoon that I want to incorporate into this au. Here are Pearl and Marina's Springfest outfits:

What I want to highlight here is Pearl's t-shirt, since it has an octopus-tentacle design. I'm thinking that, either for their Springfest looks or for an updated version of their signature performing outfits (like around the time of Splatoon 3), instead of whatever pattern was previously on Curt's top and Owen's pants, they get a new pattern of octopus tentacles on Curt and squid tentacles on Owen. Both because I think it would look cool and because I think it would be very funny and gay of them to each have a design that looks like their boyfriend's tentacles on their tightest item of clothing. In a universe where they can be out and proud about their relationship and have the fans go wild for it I think they would in fact pull that.
