Vitalasubzam Week 2024 1st day: Flowers / Symbolism

since this day is about flowers and symbolism ofc i went with hanahaki

notes:

dandelions indicating zam is p obvious -- after all thats what the guy uses himself -- but the fact that they, or more specifically their seeds, are tied to wish-granting adds a neat layer to it i think considering zam's symbol of being a star (in my interpretation) also ties in to wish-granting

this whole thing is based on zam going "subz can fix me," and while i didnt know how to portray it without making an entire comic which i didnt really wanna do, he actually doesnt want the flowers gone he just wants subz to stitch not just his chest close but also his mouth

i was originally gonna make the thread purple but decided to go with green

the x's, while supposed to be tied to the whole stitching theme going on, are red instead of green because of zam

i had trouble picking the bg color cause on one hand i wanted to make it dark but on the other hand i wanted the focus on subz despite the composition which would need a lighter color, in the end i chose the same white as zam's shirt cause i like that it made him look cut off

zam has no nipples cause his species (skyformes) are homunculi in my Minecraft LoreTM (he should also have way more scars than just his neck but i havent decided where to put them yet)

this was actually drawn right when i changed zam's design to have red teeth but it made making the dandelion seeds visible a nightmare so i decided to just keep them white in this drawing

Is Ashfur named for the powdery gray stuff you get after a fire or for ash trees? I always assumed it was the first, but since both of his sisters were named after plants it would be kind of cute if it were the second. Assuming of course there's a population of ash trees in Albion!

Ash trees!! In fact, the "Ash" pun in English doesn't translate into Clanmew at all!

It's actually kinda strange how in-canon, they have so many words for fire-related concepts. In BB the Clan cats have fire, but isn't it kinda weird that Canon has "soot," "ash," AND "cinder" when the Clans only see a fire once in a generation? When they don't even have a word for Car or Road, no less?

Anyway, in Clanmew they have one word for cinders/ashes as in "the end result of a burning fire", seen in Cinderpelt and Cinderheart, and another for soot, as seen in Sootfur, which is a fine residue that builds up in their ovens and fires and can be used to make a simple paint which we call "Bistre."

Ashfur's name refers to ash trees, the 3rd most common tree in the UK. Brindleface really liked plants. If Ashkit had a littermate, she would have liked to name them after a different type of fern than Ferncloud to keep a Tree/Fern theme going.

My third stained glass piece is a birthday gift for my roommate and my first attempt at adding a patina?? I love it so much it hides all the ugly parts of the solder. It's so clean!!!! I have to wax it in a few hours and add the chain but I'm basically done and I'm just vibrating!!!!! This is an expensive hobby but it's really rewarding. I can't wait to make some more custom designs. Can you imagine some of the designs I could make???

fairies generally imitate the lifestyles of birds in their environment so in the case of desert fairies, the majority of them live in holes in cacti that are created by woodpeckers. some will also dwell in modified burrowing owl burrows or ground nests but cacti hollows are generally considered the safest and most convenient for smaller families. saguaro flowers typically bloom around april-june so thats tulips favorite time of year cause she gets to see a lot of bats and birds fly on top of her house when they pollinate the flowers
