kind of crazy to me that sutherland pulled off a kind of tragedy like darkstalker writing for middle schoolers. like as an adult it's a classic prequel deal where you know it's going to end terribly and you're familiar with how that sort of story works and needs to work but most kids 9-14 years old don't have any of that context or experience. as a late elementary or middle schooler you're mostly reading shit that's more like the rest of the wings of fire books—they may have heavy themes about power, corruption, and abuse, but the vibes are as happy and silly as they can be with all that still going on and the pov character always has their coming of age breakthrough and the books always end happily.
so just sometimes when I think about it it's really wild how she was like yeah so this is the all-powerful villain currently and here's his backstory and at the end he gets betrayed and, because they can't kill him, put to sleep theoretically forever by his former two best friends in the whole world. and the one best friend is now so doubly traumatized that he leaves forever to go into hiding for the rest of his life and start a little hermit family, and the other, his soulmate, is so crushed by the horrifying events of her short life that she briefly considers killing herself and then decides to leave the entirety of the known world to start a new life at the fabled lost continent. and their whole tribe collectively picks itself up and flees in abject terror of darkstalker's potential return. and sutherland somehow makes this COMPLETELY palatable for children, and I know that because me and all my friends read it when it was released. and I don't know about them but it actually changed my life for the better. that's just pretty insane to me idk

Chapter One
Winter
This was it. His first day at the new school. Winter absolutely despised it, along with everyone there. They were all awful, rude, and selfish. Especially those blasted NightWings.
Winter had to tell himself to not engage, no matter what the back of his mind told him. He was stronger than that. He didn’t need anyone else but himself. He could do this just fine.
His older sister Icicle went with him, as well. She was the only dragon Winter would tolerate. She was a respectable IceWing, and she didn’t give in to all those sappy emotions like some dragons.
When they got to the entrance of the school, a NightWing with a purple underbelly and wings stood to greet them. “Hello, there!” She said, grinning widely at them. Welcome to Jade Mountain Academy! I’m Fatespeaker, and you must be… Winter and Icicle, yes?”
Winter nodded, but Icicle only said, “Yes” and scowled.
“This is such a waste of time,” growled his sister as they entered, lashing her long, serrated tail. “What in the three moons above made Queen Glacier think this was a good idea?”
Winter shook his head and shrugged, looking at his surroundings. “You think I know?” He snapped back. “I just want to survive this so I can get out.”
Once they got inside, Winter was overwhelmed by all the new sights and sounds and smells of everyone in the mountain. It was too much. There were signs hanging from each corner that told them the names of dragons, pointed them in the directions of the caves… RAGHHHH! Too much!
Sunny, one of the teachers, led him to his cave. Another dragon led Icicle to hers. Winter’s cave was… alright. But that was only the cave. The dragon he roomed with was a whole different story.
“I’m Qibli,” exclaimed his roommate, putting out his talon for Winter to shake.
Winter glanced down at his hand and backed up. “Great,” he said, not making eye contact. “Why does it matter to me?”
Qibli raised a brow at Winter, but didn’t stay anything else. He nudged his shoulder and said, “Come on, I’ll show you around.”
“I don’t need to be shown around,” he growled. “I can figure this all out for myself. Sunny, I demand to have a room with my sister instead of this SandWing.”
Sunny looked at him and chuckled. “I’m afraid that’s not quite how that works. This school was made to bring the different tribes together, so you’d better get used to each other.”
At that, she left the two of them alone together. Winter hated Qibli already, but what else could he do? Ughh, this was outrageous. Stupid SandWing, stupid other tribes! Why did this school have to exist?!?

I knew that Erin Hunter was the name of many female authors that came together to make the Warrior Cats series, but it didn't occur to me that they have their own projects going on until I noticed Tui T. Sutherland in there, but I feel silly not realizing that. They have so many interesting books that they're writing individually that I want to check out. (I thought to check because I'm a big fan of the Wings of Fire series.)

nightwing lore fascinates me so much and it slays so bad I think. here I go Watch out .
so insane to me that long long long ago they lived on the mainland, took their eggs to high points of the kingdom to hatch to be close to the moon so they could get their magic powers, and operated nocturnally. these were integral to their tribe identity. then darkstalker shows up and scares everyone SO SO SO SO fucking bad with all his magic powers and nonexistent conscience etc that they pack up, leave their southern, utopian peninsula kingdom, and collectively run the hell away to a volcanic island north of the continent. there they waste away for years and years and years until the volcano becomes active, the environment contaminated, the sky barely visible through the shitty air quality, and thus their nocturnal tendencies are muddled and their powers don't manifest anymore. and they almost NEVER visit the mainland—dragonets aren't even allowed to leave the island until they're 10 years old.
this goes on so long that whether the powers were ever real is obscured to them, they don't remember living on the peninsula, and by the time the original series begins the entire tribe is in such a horrifying crisis of general quality of life that they decide to do something evil about it. they carefully craft a prophecy that the other tribes they're so cut off from still believe they're capable of, and use it as their main ploy to STEAL another tribe's home—literally plan wipe the rainwings out of the entire ecosystem. they've been so corrupted by their environment that's trying to kill them and their isolation from other tribes and their fucked up superiority complex from keeping everyone else convinced that they have powers when for all they know that was bs in the first place that they're like aw shoot yeah. let's just wipe out this other useless tribe and move in. perfect.
AND THEN that tribe mysteriously gets on top of their shit at the VERY last minute, 10+ years later. they do this with the help of the kids that prophecy foretold, the ones that in theory were supposed to be under these superior nightwings' thrall and basically carry out the middle stage of the plan. instead of doing their jobs they say fuck you and revolt, discovering the plans and stopping the rainwing genocide but bringing all the nightwings through into the rainforest anyways because living on a volcano is just fucking sad. and as punishment for their evil plans and other transgressions the nightwings are forced to accept the rainwing queen as their ruler too, as a condition of their salvation. the setup for the move ends up saving them, but the fake prophecy from their original evil plan, in the end, brings about the plan's destruction. and of course they get their divine comeuppance of being ruled by the tribe they planned to wipe out. this isn't even GETTING INTO darkstalker's catastrophic return, or even moon's hatching where they rediscover the moons thing after who knows how many centuries. it's so so so interesting to me the long game that's happened to them it's so fun to think about

Avatars: Shadow Falling by Tui T. Sutherland
The struggle continues. Our heroes figure out who they are, meet their pantheons, and decide maybe they don't want to rule the world.
I've really been enjoying Kali's journey through these books and she shines bright in this one. Other than Kali, it felt slow. Middle book syndrome, I guess. Adding two more Avatars split our attention even more and they spent a lot of time figuring stuff out in this book. It's still fun, just slow.

I hate seeing people hate on Tui. Like, I know she’s not the perfect author and she’s made some mistakes, but people will say really mean things about her and even call her an awful author. It’s clear she loves Wings of Fire. As an aspiring writer, it’s almost intimidating and discouraging seeing how the fandom treats Tui.
Agreed.
