Framed in an upcycled frame, this linocut was hand carved and printed by the artist Ben Brockman @brockchop. It is signed and numbered in an edition of 10. “Cotinis nitida, commonly known as the green June beetle, June bug or June beetle, it is a beetle of the family Scarabaeidae. It is found in the eastern United States and Canada, where it is most abundant in the South. It is sometimes confused with the related southwestern species figeater beetle Cotinis mutabilis, which is less destructive. The green June beetle is active during daylight hours. The adult is usually 15–22 mm (0.6–0.9 in) long with dull, metallic green wings; its sides are gold and the head, legs and underside are very bright shiny green. Unthinkable Ursus - Drakovi Bloodrose In Tucson's desert, hot and dry, A creature roamed, against the sky. Unthinkable ursus, white as snow, A polar bear in lands below. His coat once warmed in Arctic seas, Now melted, gone, a mere unease. He wandered far to find a place, To call his own, a new embrace. The cactus spines, a foreign sting, Yet he survived, his strength a thing. He braved the heat, the thirst, the sun, A new home found, his life begun. Yesterday, a friend of mine told me about a recent trip to Edmonds, Washington. She talked about how much fun it was to walk around their Arts District and asked me if Tucson could ever have an Arts District. I said that we HAD an Arts District under Mayor Volgy, but it received less and less support from subsequent Mayors and City Councils. Here are two old t-shirts from art opening events organized by Dinnerware in the early 2000s. Back then, there was a Gallery Row on Congress Street -- with Dinnerware, Central Arts Gallery, Berta Wright, and others-- and at least one opening or gallery event per month. It was a lot of fun! I enjoyed being part of the gallery scene downtown. Also, at the time, Bohemia sold a lot of local art, and the TPAC (Tucson Pima Arts Council) promoted local art and artists through two city-wide studio tours per year and other events to help local artists succeed. The developers kicked the artists out of downtown back in ~2009, Bohemia sadly went out of business, and the City Council has cut TPAC down to nothing (if it still exists). Tucson has a lot of artists, musicians, and designers. This culture exists despite lack of support from local government. I hear the Joni Mitchell song playing in my head: "You don't know what you got 'til it's gone." We must preserve what makes our city unique. Apantesis incorruptus, or Grammia incorrupta is an arctiine moth in the family Erebidae. It is found from southern Colorado and south-eastern Kansas south through Arizona, New Mexico and western Texas into Mexico and west to south-eastern California.
