Scratching The Surface -- Ralph Prata
Scratching The Surface — Ralph Prata
“Inside the Outside” by Ralph Prata This past Sunday, we took Joy’s mother and sister to the nearby DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun. Years ago, as part of his Santa Catalina Foothills property, Ted DeGrazia built a Guest House for artists to work and show their work. Today the DeGrazia Foundation continues this legacy during the winter months. During our visit, we had an opportunity to see the work…

Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024 • 9 p.m. EST: Peter Karrie highlights (Toronto 1994 and 1998)
Happy October! Peter Karrie is my favorite Phantom to stream around Halloween because he's probably the most uniquely creepy and unhinged of all of them. Each boot is about 50 minutes of Phantom-centered highlights, one with Teresa DeZarn and one with Elizabeth DeGrazia.
As always, stream will be on cy.tube and shy anons are welcome. For more info, please see the Saturday Streams FAQ! Link and password will be posted here at 8:45.

ID: Unreal Unearth was partly inspired by Inferno, the first half of Italian poet Dante Alighieri’s 14th century classic The Divine Comedy. It’s one of the books Hozier read while locked up in his early-1700s home in Wicklow, England, during the pandemic—a period that also provided a great deal of inspiration for the record. End ID.
Absolutely fascinated by this article written by Leah Degrazia for Genius. It is exactly four paragraphs long, 191 words, and featured on the front page of the website. And yet, at no point—during writing, proofreading, editing, or publishing—did anyone think to double-check where Wicklow is.

3/11 Class Post
Women hip-hop artists must recognize the impact they have on their fans, as anything they do will be seen by all fans and idolized because they hold such a powerful image. Female hip-hop artists have different ways in which people gaze upon them due to stereotypical standards of femininity. As an example, oftentimes women are seen as "submissive" when compared to men, so a "woman in power" may be gazed upon as hostile. To be conscious of hip-hop is to recognize the different levels of expression that can be used to send a message. For example, an artist like Nicki Minaj plays into the hypersexualized expression of a woman, and as a pop-culture icon, people can view her work as either pro-feminist or contrary to feminist work, as she plays into this stereotypically sexual figure. I believe she does this as an expression of her confidence in her own femininity, playing into her own sexuality and using it to satirically combat traditional feminist values.
For my lyrical video, I chose Side to Side" by Ariana Grande. In my opinion, this music video does not resist traditional constructions of femininity. This is because the general premise of this song is clearly about having sexual intercourse with a man, but not only this but having to walk "side to side" because of him. That is up to interpretation, but has a pretty clear sexual innuendo.
These friends keep talkin' way too much Say I should give you up Can't hear them no, 'cause I
I've been here all night I've been here all day And boy, got me walkin' side to side
This quote also provides an example of playing into a "submissive" feminine figure, with this lyric stating she is not listening to her friends and instead remaining with this assumedly dominant male figure who has Grande "walking side to side." Bell Hooks may not like this music video because it is extremely sexualized, and also plays into traditional feminine stereotypes.
