So what do people actually think the background characters in the Underland chronicles look like
Just wondering. From all the (amazing) Fan art I have seen of Gregor , Lizzie, and Boots the fandom seems to have a pretty cohesive Idea on what they look like. Luxa also seems to have a pretty standard image in the fandom (Though wasn't she on the cover of the first design of MOS) with the only differentiation being how far along she is in puberty. Reminder if she was in the overland she would be in the sixth grade.
Other characters though Like really what do people think they look like. In my head Mrs. Cormaci is a plump/rounder women and I thought for years I had read that in the books until I saw fanart of her being drawn as more slim. Then I reread part of TPOB and was like Oh it never says what shape she is, I guess I just thought she was bigger because she is always cooking so much rich sounding food for charities. Then I remember seeing some one post once that what if she was Hazard's maternal grandmother. His maternal grandparents live in NYC, and Mrs.Cormaci is mentioned to have had a daughter.
Well that is bitter sweet because on one had that means that Mrs. Cormaci's daughter has been missing for years and in fact died without her mother ever knowing what happened to her (she also would not have known when her father died). Gotta then wonder if Mrs.Cormaci giving Lizzie her daughters old cloths is more than just her trying to help the Campbells while also declutter her house. But that also means Hazard has at least one Grandma who is really grand, if this relation was ever realized then maybe Hazard could come up to the overland for visits and stay with Mrs. Cormaci. Also she would probably have pictures of her daughter that she could show Hazard so he could remember what his mom looked like. Anyway I really liked this theory and wanted it to be cannon, but then i realized that since Hazard's overland features are his black hair and green eyes his overland relations probably have them to, and was like oh wow I never pictured Mrs.Cormaci having green eyes.
Another character I think about is Vikus. In my head the males in the underland Henry, Mareth, York all have short close cropped hair because they fight so much. Or in Howard's a short stack of wavy/curly locks cut just short enough to stay out of his eyes when wet. I do love the fan art I have seen of Henry with long hair though. But When It comes to Vikus , I guess since he seeks peace and is better relations, I usually imagine him with long grey hair and a long beard. to me he winds up looking kinda like men in biblical stories. Solovet however is muscled with a near shaved head. She is on the small side and slouches a bit when trying to appear as a gracious hostess and that plus her wrinkles make her seem non dangerous. When she is in planing/battle mode though she stands perfectly straight and those seemingly kindly wrinkles disappear, and she just looks completely terrifying.
Dulcet and Nerissa are other cases. Dulcet is described as being shy and very pretty. But as someone who works in childcare I can say with certainty that her hair is most likely a mess, her simple cloths likely have stains and crayon markings all over them. This girl is a beautiful mess. Then we have Neressa whom everyone knows is a mess. Since she is constantly described as wide eyed, tired, frail, to thin, and wearing her long hair a loose pony tail. But I don't often see it acknowledged that she canonically wears multiple layers of cloths at once or that her cloths never match.
I said most of the men in the underland would have short hair, could Hamnet have grown his hair out longer in the jungle, to try and make himself look different from how he did as a solider. Likewise I also imagine his lizard skin cloths being frayed and raggedy at the edges, much different from whatever military uniforms regalians wear. Anything to help hims see something different when he looks into the water. Can we talk about how when Gregor first meets Howard he describes him as tall and really strong, Then during his time with the plague Howard looses like 20 pounds and has scars wear ever he had bumps. Howard likely could not even fit into his old cloths after getting better.
What do Gregor's parents look like. We know they are both thin and tired. His dad's hair has gone completely white. Grace's cannot be to far behind with how hard she works and being in a state of constant worry for her family. Do fans still Agree with the theory that Grace is white and the Dad is black?
Also one more thing. Why does everyone think any of the underlanders that haven't completely greyed over have silver-blond hair. Like I know Luxa has that shade. Luxa would also probably be blonde if she has been born i t he overland. But it only specified that a silver tint was part of what distinguished the underlanders. Personally I always thought they could have any hair color (examples I imagine Howard being brunette and Mareth having black hair) but that it would always be paler than an overland counter part.
Like I know and respect that the characters descriptions are vague on purpose, and that the fun is that we can imagine them looking in so many different ways. But like really how do people imagine their favorites look. What little we get implies that the characters do not fall into the young adult novels trope of making them all look super hot. They are scared, beat up, anxious, and some are wearing cloths that do not fit them, some are missing body parts. To me that makes them infinetly more fun to imagine than most YA novel characters
So seriously if you have any strong clear/headcannons as to what you think certain human characters look like, please share them int he comments.

I decided to re-read Gregor the Overlander for it's 20 year anniversary (ended up getting halfway through the third book before I decided to stop for the day, it's that good!) And while I was reading, I realized one of the main reasons why the series has stuck with me. It's the extra kindness the characters show.
There's a post on here talking about Lord of the Rings and Gibli films, and how they are all about showing kindness for no other reason than the kindness, and I feel The Underland Chronicles fit that perfectly. Mrs. Cormaci going out of her way to help Gregor and his family, Ripred staying up to comfort Lizzie, Vikus gathering all the money in the meuseum to help Gregor. This series is built off the backs of the small kindness people give to each other.

Gregor thinks ‘it shouldn’t matter for him, he was eleven’ about Christmas. Just. *sobs* This poor kid thinks he’s too old for Christmas to be magical for him anymore. That he has to worry about money and bills and health because he’s already eleven years old. He’s a baby.

If Cormaci visited the underland we all know Red would be the first to greet her. Yeet the bat out of the way and slide into those DMs groomed like a show horse and suave as a prince, offering his paw and swearing to protect her during her stay.
She sends him food. She is his angel.
She’d be civil and take it well enough but damn that is a large rat.
She’s scolding Gregor for telling her the rat was mean and grumpy when he’s OBVIOUSLY the kindest and most chivalrous man in the world.

Cartoon Series Pt. 3.5 | Gregor and the ... Vendetta of Longclaw?
This is technically part 4 in my cartoon/Phineas and Ferb style wallpapers of every TUC quest series ... except hold up, what in the what now is this quest? What is "Gregor and the Vendetta of Longclaw"? Since when??
... Since A Henry Story, actually.
Yes, this is an original quest, exclusive to AHS. In the AHS universe, 18 months pass between COTW and MOS, partially to accommodate this quest because it is rather crucial (for details, see below.)
For those of you who have read it, you will know that part 3 of AHS 2 is essentially ... its own TUC book. It feels more disconnected from the rest of the book because it is its own story, with its own quest and mini-arc. Thematically, it fits into AHS 2, and it also concludes Henry's character arc for that book, as well as deals with the villain, hence why it is still in that book. I still jokingly always refer to this part as "TUC 3.5 - Gregor and the Vendetta of Longclaw", because ... well, that's what it is.
***
Because it is original and most of you will have never read it, let me tell you a few core details about this quest (spoiling as little as possible):
There is no prophecy. As you can read on the image version with text, this quest is jumpstarted by a kidnapping ... of no other than Stellovet by a former general of Gorger's called Longclaw, who successfully evaded the plague and is after the crown of the gnawers.
All of this starts when Luxa takes Gregor on a day trip to the Fount (this does not go as planned as it becomes a full-blown quest.) So yes, they depart from the Fount that time. You get to actually see the Fount in AHS.
Gregor and Luxa were actually forbidden from coming. York and Susannah decided they couldn't risk the warrior and the queen, no matter the demands, and sent Howard, the outcast known as "Death Rider" (who has aided several quests and saved many important lives, earning himself a hero reputation ... and who no one realizes is actually Henry), and her governess Dalia who was there when she was taken, to rescue Stellovet without complying with the demands.
Guilt tripped by the notion that the kidnappers were serious and would kill Stellovet if they didn't show up, Gregor and Luxa decide to follow after them without anyone's consent (believe me, Gregor is as bewildered by this decision as you are probably, right now. As he puts it: "Looking out into the darkness, Gregor almost laughed at the absurdity of his current situation. Was it Saturday already? Would he be at Mrs. Cormaci’s place now if he wasn’t stuck on this stupid rescue mission for someone he didn’t even like?") Hence why Boots is not there and neither Luxa nor Gregor are wearing clothes that one would necessarily pick for a quest (Gregor left Boots with his mom in Regalia and neither he nor Luxa brought spare clothes on a day trip, now they suffer the consequences.)
Your Regular Questing ensues ... cue an earthquake, a rat gladiator arena, some quality time spent in a gnawer prison pit, a crown retrieval, an epic duel, some bonding between Gregor and Dalia (who is the first proper commoner he meets in the Underland who's had a hard time growing up like Gregor himself), and a pretty shocking twist ... with grave consequences.
Dalia is more important than she seems. That ... that is essentially the essence. That and, this quest jumpstarts the character arcs of both Gregor (yes he gets an actual character arc in AHS, as opposed to original TUC), and Luxa (whose arc I wanna claim feels more organic and natural compared to the original due to this part.)
In general, we deep dive into the Fount siblings and Stellovet's and Luxa's warming up to each other, the societal issues between nobility and commoners in the Underland, which were never explored in the original, and some more pretty consequential sh*t XD Can you tell that this part is one of my favorite parts in all of AHS?
Now, with that in mind, let's look at the art again ... I should probably introduce the characters you won't know yet:
(r.t.l) Howard, Stellovet, Thanatos, Dalia (don't be fooled by how young she looks, she is actually 19, she is just very short and frail), Henry, (hanging) Aurora & Ares, (ground) Luxa & Gregor, Hera and her pups (a flier family they encounter in aforementioned gnawer prison pit.
***
Anyway, if that sounds interesting to you, go read "A Henry Story" 👉 I promise it is very cool, and not just because of this quest! I have a post up on my tumblr where I link the first two books but you can find them on Wattpad, Ao3, and Quotev (my favorite<3) as well by simply browsing.
And check out the rest of this art series (on my tumblr feed)! I plan on doing all the quests. The first 3 TUC books are done!
Disclaimer: the bg is a stock image; the rest is drawn by me!

What’s this? Even more headcannons?
- When Gregor leaves, Mrs Cormaci is super lonely, she literally has no one to care for/talk to.
- Eventually she finds herself talking to the laundry grate. It’s quite therapeutic, really.
- Until one day, the grate talks back
- It doesn’t actually, Nike talks back but that line was fun to write.
- She’s shook at first, but soon begins to chat with Nike regularly
- They become fast friends, but no one knows, not even Howard (Nike’s new bond)
- Eventually Nike persuades Mrs Cormaci to come to Regalia, and meet everyone.
- She literally has nothing else to do, so she agrees.
- So off they go, flying towards the city. Mrs Cormaci hasn’t felt this alive since the 70s.
- They land, and Nike introduces her to everyone (Ripred instantly loves her)
- Luxa, however, can’t bring herself to greet Mrs Cormaci. She reminds her to much of Gregor, and everything he meant to her.
- Hearing of this from Nike, Mrs Cormaci manages to track Luxa down and eventually finds her in the old nursery.
- She instantly sees why Gregor fell in love with Luxa, she’s now in her mid-teens and even more beautiful than ever (not that Gregor only fell for her bcos of her looks but basically she’s hot)
- Anyway, instead of talking, she just takes Luxa in her arms and gives her the first real hug she’s had in a long time.
- And Luxa lets her
- Because she’s so miserable and confused and overworked and worried and she just doesn’t know what to do and she wishes Gregor was there, Luxa lets her.
- And they just hug, two strangers only connected by someone they both admired and loved and who’s gone.
—————————————————————-
Argh I so want to stop there but I have more!!!
- Mrs Cormaci starts to spend more and more time in the Underland.
- Somehow these people just become the best friends she’s ever had
- Eventually she moves out of her flat and into the Underland full-time.
- She gets a room in the palace, and starts to work in the kitchen, bringing Overland recipes and flavours.
- Soon it’s as if she’s lived there all her life.
- And she loves it because it’s finally a chance to have a fresh start, and all the characters love her because she’s so nice and is always there if you need someone to chat to.
- and she loved Gregor just as much as they did.
Don’t Look Back in Anger by Oasis
Seriously listening to this song’s chorus gives me goosebumps. IMO it reflects Gregors feelings when he sends Luxa to the dungeons, as he’s trying to tell her not to hate him, but also relieved that she’ll be OK no matter what happens to him.

idea for a gregor the overander/tuc sequel series:
after the events of book 5, gregor’s family and the underland go their separate ways. The underland never reaches out to them, and gregor’s family tries their best to just forget the whole thing. A couple years after their return, they even move to a whole new city (the whole farm plan didn’t work out; too expensive).
boots grows up feeling like her entire family is hiding some big, dark secret. they never talk about anything that happened before they moved, taking special care to avoid boots’s baby years.
her mom wears long sleeves and jeans, even in the summertime. once, boots accidentally walked in on her dressing and found that she was covered in faded, circular scars.
sometimes, her dad wakes up screaming, only for her mom to soothe him back to sleep. her sister has nightmares too, only she wakes up in a panic attack, muttering about rats and codes and gregor. every once in a while, boots has nightmares too: drowning in a surging river as someone reaches out for her, a pit full of dancing mice who suddenly go still, the heat of fire and choking blindness of soot. she has nightmares about other things too, just like any other kid, but those are the ones that come back again and again, just a bit too vivid, and fill her with a strange feeling that lingers just a bit too long.
whenever she told her mom about these dreams, she assured boots that they were just that: dreams. but every so often, she could hear her parents argue. most of the time, they were happy, almost a little too happy. but they would have hushed arguments late at night, safely behind closed doors, and boots would listen through the vents. it was difficult to understand, and it didn’t help that they seemed afraid to even mention what they were actually talking about. sometimes they argued about boots, how not telling her about “it” was for her own good. sometimes they argued about lizzie, how they couldn’t get her anxiety treated in case she mentioned “it” (they ended up taking her to therapy after a particularly bad panic attack landed her in the hospital). but most of the time, they argued about gregor.
gregor was a good kid, and he tried to be a good brother too. he tried really, really hard. he dropped boots off from school and picked her up every day, even after she was old enough to take the bus on her own. he took her wherever she wanted to go, chaperoned all her field trips, and became a counselor for the summer camp she went to every year. he worked through high school to help pay the bills, even picked up a second job to help pay for lizzie’s college, and he always treated boots and lizzie to something nice when he got his paycheck.
and yet, despite all this, he was always so distant. he went off on his own more often than not, never told any stories about himself, and didn’t seem to want to do anything with his life but go for long runs and take care of their family. like their mom, he preferred long sleeves over short ones, but every once in a while boots would catch a glimpse of jagged scars that he refused to acknowledge exist. he had the worst nightmares of anyone, but instead of talking them out, he disappeared to who-knows-where in the middle of the night. sometimes his eyes got this glossy, distant look, and someone would have to snap him out of it before he remembered where he was or what he was doing.
every once in a while, boots tried to talk to him about it. figure out what he was hiding. but he just brushed her off. he brushed a lot of things off; gregor never got angry or upset with anyone. whenever things started to get heated, whenever he would get pushed towards his breaking point, he went on one of his long runs. to boots, it seemed he was always holding part of himself back, almost like he was afraid of what would happen if he got angry.
not that she could blame him.
there have been two times in boots’s life when gregor got angry. once was when she was about ten years old: gregor and boots had caught their landlord putting up a fumigation notice on their way home from school. apparently, there was a cockroach infestation. gregor argued that it was inhumane to just kill a bunch of bugs like that, but the landlord wouldn’t budge, getting more and more irritated by gregor’s protests until he said “what do you care, kid? they’re just a bunch of cockroaches, they don’t matter.” boots could practically feel the anger emanating off of her brother, and a dazed look crossed his face before he punched the landlord—almost. missed the guy’s jaw by centimeters, diverting his throw into the wall. it took a few minutes of controlled breathing on gregor’s part and placating the landlord on boots’s, but they were able to work out an agreement: gregor would door to door to gather and release the cockroaches by himself.
that incident had scared boots more than she wanted to admit, mostly because of an incident before that, where gregor hadn’t held back.
she was maybe eight years old. gregor had had one of his nightmares and disappeared into the night; only this time, boots had followed him. she tried to keep her distance so she wouldn’t be caught, and turned around whenever he checked behind his shoulder (later, she realized that he definitely knew she was following him; her bright purple raincoat wasn’t exactly the stealthiest choice of outerwear). as she crossed the opening to an alley, hands snatched her, pulling her into the darkness. two men held her tight, their acidic stench and gnarled, toothy grins overwhelming her senses, and she let out a brief cry before one of them clamped his hand over her mouth.
then, she saw gregor. his fearful look twisted into something much more dangerous, and he lunged.
it was over before she could blink. gregor tore the men off of her, throwing one against the wall hard enough to make his skull to crack and knocking the other one to the ground, mercilessly punching as boots wailed for him to stop. only, he didn’t stop. he was like a machine, tearing into the guy with deadly precision until boots grabbed his arm and pulled him away. and for a split second, she caught sight of a dazed grin stretched across his face before he snapped out of it, hoisted boots onto his back, and ran.
he must’ve ran for twenty minutes before he slowed down in some park, far from home. he let boots go, checked her over for any sign she’d been hurt, and when there weren’t any, he sat beneath an old tree and cried. boots sat next to him, not sure of what just happened, not sure of what to say. so, she checked him over too, making sure he wasn’t hurt either. he wasn’t, except for that distant look on his face as tears rolled down his cheeks and his bloodied and bruised knuckles. boots wiped his hands with some tissues she found in her pocket and kissed them better—she had to pry his left hand away from his chest, as it was holding tight to the little bat figure he always kept strung around his neck.
“how come you always wear that necklace?” she had asked him, mostly because she wanted to distract him from whatever was making him cry. it worked, somewhat; he seemed to come back from whatever far-off place his mind wandered to.
“i guess you don’t remember, huh?” he asked in return, still sniffling a little. she shook her head. “you gave this to me, back when you were just a baby.”
“really?”
“mhm. that’s why i wear it all the time. and it... it reminds me of a friend.”
with that, he returned to that far-off place. she tried to ask him more, but he brushed her off and took her home. with that, her first and only story from the life her family had lived before they moved was over.
later that same night, boots had a nightmare of her own. but it wasn’t about the two men—it was about gregor. a younger gregor, surrounded by absolute stillness, sword dripping with blood, bearing that same grin.
as much as she hated to admit it, and as much as she hated herself for thinking it, but ever since that day, boots couldn’t help but feel a tiny bit afraid of gregor. at least, the part of him that had smiled. the part of him that he always tried to keep hidden. the part of him that boots suspected resulted in those nightmares and scars.
something happened to their family. something big. and the fact that boots didn’t know was driving her crazy. so who could blame her, really, for wanting to get to the bottom of it?
boots was 13 years old when she lied to her brother. she said she had filled out all the forms for summer camp, but the day the bus arrived, she wasn’t allowed on. so gregor the camp counselor had to leave the unregistered boots behind with a promise that she wouldn’t go anywhere without telling mom or dad and she would always be home before dark. lizzie hadn’t come home from college this summer, something about an internship, and her parents wouldn’t be home for hours.
so, boots got to work. she found a file with her family’s old address, stashed her family’s rainy day fund into her suitcase, and bought a bus ticket for new york city.
the trip there was an exciting whirlwind and agonizingly slow all at once, and she almost got hit by a car after getting off the bus. it was still early afternoon by the time she arrived, and with her printed-out mapquest directions in hand, she made the long trek from the bus stop to their old apartment building.
the family that lived in their old unit didn’t know anything about anything. neither did the next five doors that she tried. but just as she was starting to get frustrated that she came here for nothing, she knocked on the door of an older woman by the name of mrs. cormaci.
as soon as she said their family name, mrs. cormaci recognized her as boots, gregor’s little sister, and sized her up in all of two seconds. she ushered her inside, chastised her for running away, and left a voicemail for her parents before boots could say another word. finally, she sat boots down at the kitchen table with a heaping plate of lasagna—which boots was, undoubtedly, grateful for, as she hadn’t factored lunch into the equation.
“so,” mrs. cormaci said as boots wolfed down her serving. “you wanna tell what exactly you’re doing here?”
“i can’t. it’s top secret,” boots replied with a shrug. mrs. cormaci narrowed her eyes and frowned.
“uh-huh. and i don’t suppose this secret of yours has anything to do with the underland?”
boots froze with her fork halfway up to her mouth. did mrs. cormaci know her family’s secret? and what did she mean by the underland?
for now, she decided to play along. “so what if it does?”
“well, i’d say you’re halfway out of your mind if you’re thinking of going back to that place.”
“but i have to!”
“no sweetie, you don’t,” mrs. cormaci sighed. a softer look crossed her face before she reached out and took boots’s hand. “there’s nothing but tragedy down there. and there haven’t been any messages from ripred or luxa or any of ‘em. believe you me, if anything came out of that laundry vent, you and gregor would be the first to know.”
the phone rang, but mrs. cormaci didn’t make a move to get it.
“i bet that’s your mother right now, and she’s probably having a fit knowing you’re here,” she said. “but before i answer, i want you to promise me you’re not going anywhere.”
boots shook her head. “i’m sorry. i can’t do that.”
the phone went to voicemail, and mrs. cormaci huffed.
“you and your brother, i swear. so stubborn!” she chided. the phone started ringing again. “how ‘bout this: you don’t go anywhere right now. but one day, you and gregor come back here, and he can take you to the underland himself. keep you safe.”
“okay, fine. i promise,” boots relented. but she knew full well her parents would never agree to that, not after the stunt she pulled. and even so, they were never going to tell her about this underland place, let alone allow her to go anywhere near it. but if this place had the answers to her family’s past, maybe it had some way of fixing their problems, too.
“good,” mrs. cormaci smiled as she headed for the phone. “and when you do come back, make sure gregor stops by for a visit. he must be so tall by now—hello?”
mrs. cormaci disappeared around the corner to answer the phone, and boots decided it was now or never. she silently sprinted for the front door and bolted to the stairs. the older woman had mentioned something about the laundry vent, and boots had every intention of investigating for clues. but a cursory glance around the laundry room revealed no such vents. she thought that maybe she had heard wrong, or was in the wrong laundry room—she passed a laundromat on her way here—before thinking to check behind the machines. luckily, no one was in the room with her as she frantically searched machine after machine, every little noise making her think that mrs. cormaci had found her.
then, finally, she found the vent. it took some muscle, but she managed to scoot the machine out far enough so she could stick her head in to investigate. the dust made her cough, and a lint bunny stuck to her curls, but it was quickly pulled out by a current.
that current grew stronger, and boots was sucked into the vent.
she expected to be compressed by the walls of the air shaft. she also expected to free fall straight into the ground. neither happened. instead, the vent opened into a vast, pitch black cavern, and she was carried down by the same current that pulled her in. she landed on the ground gently, not metal like she had expected, but cold, smooth stone.
“hello?” she called out into the darkness. nothing. she felt around the ground the get her bearings and found a slab of stone with a small opening, through which she could hear scuttling sounds. she pressed an arm through, feeling around for any danger, and her hand brushed a smooth, solid, but unmistakably alive surface. the creature reared back from her touch and let out a series of hisses and clicks.
and, to boots’s immense surprise, she understood what the creature was saying.

DAY FIVE: PROPHECY
Prophecies are king in the Underland. In every book, people live and die by them. Whether or not you believe in Sandwich, they seem to come true regardless, as do Nerissa’s visions (well, most of the time) and Mrs. Cormaci’s premonitions.
Please tag your work as “#underland chronicles fandom week” and/or “#tuc week” and/or tag this blog, or use this blog’s submission feature. All works will be reblogged here. If you don’t see your content here by the end of the day, shoot a message—Tumblr, as you probably know, is infamous for tags not working properly.
