i've met a lot of people who are unsure of which route of HRT they'd like to take. there are a lot of pros and cons to each one, I figured I would lay out some information to try to make that decision a bit easier for folks, as someone who has used both.

both forms of testosterone are equally as effective, topical is not "weaker" than injectable, everyone's bodies processes these hormones differently and the effectiveness depends on how your body processes medications, and your dosage.

Topical Testosterone

Taken daily, or for some folks, every few days

Either comes in a bottle with a pump that dispenses measured doses, or will come in a month's worth of small packets or tubes.

Many insurance plans in the United States will not cover topical testosterone for transgender or intersex HRT purposes, and if it is covered, it often costs an exorbitant amount of money- well into the hundreds of dollars

Requires clean skin prior to and covering the skin with clothing after application and avoiding swimming and showering for several hours after application

Hands must be washed afterwards to prevent transmission of the hormone to other people in your environment

Has a strong smell due to the gel being alcohol based

Can cause burning sensation if it accidentally gets into sensitive areas such as mucous membranes, cuts, your eyes, etc.

Can cause skin irritation in some folks, though this is rare

Being an alcohol based gel, it is very flammable, so caution is needed to be practiced around flames until the gel has dried

Can be easy to miss doses if you have chronic fatigue and/or illness, memory problems, mental health issues, or a busy lifestyle

Injectable Testosterone

Usually taken once or twice a week, depending on your needs

Testosterone cypionate is almost always covered by insurance in places where transgender HRT is a part of your plan. It is extremely cheap if it is not covered for whatever reason, usually costing around $15 for a month's worth of vials and syringes, but this can vary wildly depending on your area

Requires needles, syringes, a sharps container (safe container to dispose needles into), alcohol prep pads or isopropyl alcohol or other strong sterilizing agent for the injection site, bandages for applying to the site afterwards, and optionally gloves, but washing your hands prior to injecting works as well

If doing your own injections, you have to learn how to measure your dose accurately, and how to hold the needle at the angle most appropriate for your injections, as well as learning about if you need to do subcutaneous or intramuscular injections

Despite the amount of items required, injections are very quick and can be done and forgotten about until your next injection date- there is no daily maintenance for injections

You must switch up your injection spots every time you inject as to avoid damaging muscle and skin tissue

Injections can be done by endocrinologists and prescribers if you do not feel comfortable doing them yourself

It is possible for your skin to react to, or for you to be allergic to the injecting needles. This is rare, and can be addressed with your prescriber and/or an allergist

Testosterone cypionate will crystalize in cold temperatures. It will change in appearance and consistency, but can be returned to normal by placing the vial into warm water for a while and/or by shaking the vial for a while

This may be the last time I write from the hotel room.

The window is open, but I can’t make out any stars, only the glow of the moon through the clouds that covered the sky all day in a blanket of deep grey. Occasionally, it even drizzled a little; I’d forgotten how much it rains in England year round. When the sun shone through, shafts of light streamed down like a brilliant halo, and the rain glittered.

I met up with Liza today—on purpose this time. It was fine.

The first thing she said when she saw me was, “You look like you’ve been pulling all nighters for a week! Are you stuck on the graveyard shift?”

She looked healthy: fit, well fed, without any obvious illness or injury. She’s working back at Barts. I can’t believe it’s been so long since we met as students there. Apparently, it’s interesting stuff; she’s always been more interested in research than practice.

She gave me a tour of the new wing. It was strange being back just as a visitor. It felt like there should have been somewhere I needed to be, something that needed to be done. I heard a low rumble in the distance and almost went for cover, but it was just an intern pushing a cart down the hallway. There weren’t any tremors, just my legs shaking.

Thankfully, Liza didn’t seem to notice. “While we’re here, there’s someone I’d like to introduce you to. He said he’d be around today.”

“Your boyfriend?” I asked.

She laughed. “No, I’m not quite his type, but you’d be just his kind of fellow, and I bet you’ll like him. He’s a bit eccentric but harmless, I promise.”

“You’re setting me up?” With everything else, I haven’t so much as thought about dating anyone since before I left England.

She smiled impishly at my incredulousness. “Things may not have worked out between us, but I still feel some responsibility for your happiness. And he seemed so interested in meeting you.”

I didn’t have time to protest as she opened the door to one of the new labs and there he was.

Most of the tables had been taken over by a rainbow of test tubes. I couldn’t even tell what half of it was. He was standing at a bench in the far corner of the room, preoccupied with his studies. He wasn’t dressed for lab work; apparently, his fitted suit was too nice for a lab coat or gloves.

Then, suddenly, he turned toward us, test tube still in hand and declared, “I’ve found it! I’ve found it!”

Liza only shrugged.

He said that he had discovered a new reagent that’s only precipitated by hemoglobin, but I don’t know how he did that with the assortment of chemicals he had out on the benches.

Liza introduced us, and he squeezed more than shook my hand, his arm tense with the effort, though his grip wasn’t that strong. He’s very thin, possibly undernourished, like he’s recently recovered from some illness.

“You have been in Afghanistan, I perceive,” he said.

I don’t know where he got that idea. “No, Syria.” 

“Ah, yes, of course,” he said, as though it made no difference and quickly returned to expounding upon his experiment.

He looked like he was about my age, but otherwise he could have been one of the professors I had back in uni with how he talked about it. He even gave a demonstration of his reagent—and it seemed to work. He certainly sounded like he knew what he was talking about, walking us through the process, with an emphasis on its applications in forensics, though I would be surprised if the police don’t already have more sophisticated techniques.

He abruptly concluded his lecture, saying, “But we have business to discuss. I perceive that you have been staying in a hotel. I have also been trying to solve the problem as to whether it is possible to get comfortable rooms at a reasonable price and cannot get someone to go halves with me. I have my eye on a suite, not in Baker Street, but which would suit us down to the ground. You don’t mind the smell of strong tobacco, I hope?”

It took me a moment to catch up with the sudden change in subject. “I’m not looking for a flat. I’m only visiting London. I’ll be returning to Syria soon.”

“By your wardrobe, I can see that you’ve been in London for some months already,” he said as though it was nothing out of the ordinary. “Even if you will remain only for another month, a flat divided between us would be a considerably less expensive domicile than the hotel, and it would be no less easy to part company.”

I don’t know what my clothes had to do with it, but he was right about the hotel. “I could leave at any time?”

“When so ever it suits you, Doctor. You don’t mind the smell of strong tobacco, I hope?”

I’ve been trying to quit ever since I started, but it would have been hypocritical of me to object. “No.”

“Very good, and your own cigarettes are good enough for me. I generally have chemicals about and occasionally do experiments. Would that annoy you?”

“No, that’s fine.”

“Let me see—what are my other shortcomings? I get in the dumps at times and don’t open my mouth for days on end. You must not think I am sulky when I do that. Just let me alone, and I’ll soon be right. What have you to confess now? It’s just as well for two fellows to know the worst of one another before they begin to live together.”

It’ll just be a place to stay, and I won’t be there for long, but I volunteered, “I’m up at all hours, but I’ll try to be quiet.”

Liza added helpfully, “You also snore and smoke now, apparently, and you don’t pull your punches.”

“Do you include violin-playing in your category of rows?” he asked before Liza could go on.

“No.” If it bothered me, I could just make myself scarce, and I’ve slept through worse.

He rubbed his hands together in an unusual show of enthusiasm. “Then I think we may consider the thing as settled—that is, if the rooms are agreeable to you.”

We agreed to meet at Barts tomorrow at noon to see the flat. Then, Liza and I continued on our tour, though there wasn’t much left to see.

As soon as we had turned a couple corners, Liza burst into laughter. “I’ve never seen him like that before! He must have been reciting it from memory!”

He was a bit odd, or eccentric, as she’d warned me. Looking back at it now, the way he talked seems a little like an old scientific paper, but at the time he was saying it, it all sounded completely natural.

“He wants to be Sherlock Holmes,” Liza explained.

“The detective?” I asked, just to be sure.

“Yes, and I think he really is trying to be a detective, but he’s also mentioned that he’s into amateur theatre. I think he must have just recited the whole scene where Sherlock and Watson meet for the first time! No wonder he wanted me to introduce you!”

“There’s no flat then?”

“No, he really has been looking for a flatmate. He was just having some fun with it—and it is too perfect; you, a doctor, just returned from Syria, moving in with him, an amateur detective. I wonder if he’ll try to take you along on his cases! And he does seem interested...”

“I’m not planning on staying in England for that long,” I reminded her.

“I know, I know. Though I didn’t realise you’ve been here for months already. I thought you’d just come off the ship.”

“No, I’ve wasted too much time here already. I should be back by now. But he’s right; I’m living on fumes as is, and at the rate everything is taking, I don’t know how much longer it’ll be.”

“I’m sure your visas and all that will go through eventually, and in the meantime, maybe you’ll make a friend.”

I could only shake my head. “If you didn’t tell him how long I’ve been here, how did he figure all that?”

She shrugged. “He’s the one who wants to be Sherlock Holmes. And he certainly has a way of knowing things.”

I made my excuses and returned to the hotel not long after that. I missed another call from my parents while I was out. 

It’s dark out now. I should probably sleep. I won’t miss this place if I do move out tomorrow.

wwoah thank you, that way on how you draw the head/s is very useful, if it is okay to ask, how do you do the bodies as well? if this makes sense ^^; hopefully its not too annoying with me asking this stuff !!

not annoying at all! i'm so happy that first process post helped and i hope this one can too :]

ok!! here's an overview of the steps (once again with good posture v1, since that's probably more applicable to most ppl lol):

step 1: blocking out the body in three parts: chest, abdomen, and pelvis. these are based a much more human-like shape, as its body without its back attachment looks a lot like a regular torso in construction imo + again, i tend to go for organic rather than mechanical shapes

step 2: the chest!! i first draw in its chest plate based on pectoral muscles, then make them a bit blockier. its collar is much like a collar bone (innovative i kno.....) and then i use the cut off line i established in the base sketch to know how big to make the two plates beneath its chest. i'm,,,,sorry that's not explained very well ;o;

step 3: the abdomen!! this is pretty simple and follows the base sketch almost exactly, with a tummy panel that includes articulation points and is slightly open to reveal a couple threads of blood tubing just beneath the chest.

step 4: the pelvis! the pelvis is 100% modeled pretty directly from a human pelvis with only a couple notable differences: the front extends much further up in the middle and it has mounts that connect to the hydraulics we're about to sketch in. again this really lends a more organic feel to it!

step 5: the extras! here the hydraulic blood ports are added in - first i draw the rod from the side of its chest to the mount on its pelvis, then i draw in the little blood tank. its "backpack" is added here too, which is the mount for its wings and its blood reservoir.

step 6: an additional step to try to show how its limbs attach. the arms are tough for me every time tbh, mostly bc i'm not good at rotating an octagon in my head lol, but those shoulders do overlap a bit with the top chest plate. its legs are wide set and again attach similarly as they might on the pelvis.

i,,,,hope that helped a little!! i'm really not the best explainer and honestly i'm still learning myself how to draw the vs consistently! so don't give up! they're definitely complicated in shape, esp if you're new to drawing or have only drawn human characters, so just keep trying and you'll improve!!

Battle Lines.

Many conflicts occur from misunderstandings. Those lead to opinions and different opinions lead to taking sides. Criticism of what I think is criticism of me. Wanna fight? I just watched an interesting You Tube video on digital recording. (see below) They talk about sample rates and bit depth and well stuff which engineers deal with in audio. Interesting they relate bit depth directly to tape noise.

The consumer or audiophile listener has to take a side right? I mean I have said many times I prefer my analog source of LPs to Streaming and CDs. The fight between digital and analog is very similar to the solid state versus glass conflict. You wanna fight?

But recently I have gone on about how I have some really good CDs. There are true audiophile CDs even with the limits of 16 bit and 44 khz.

My CD player is good, but not high end. It costs less than my current phono pickup. But good can be pretty good.

I am beginning to lean on the idea that it is the recording and processing of the disc (either shiny clear, or big black type) that is the big difference. A poorly done recording and a ham fisted mastering will make a poor playback no matter how fancy and expensive your music spinner is. Or for that matter if it is digital or analog.

And there is a direct parallel between how a digital signal can go bad and how a solid state or tube amplifier can sound good or bad. Clipping is a word used when a signal exceeds the capacity of a medium to portray it. In a power amplifier tubes are always praised for how they clip. Overdrive them and they keep pretty calm and if you are a guitar player they make nice distortion sounds. A solid state amplifier reacts dangerously with nasty harmonics and even gobs of DC to blow speakers. Personally in audio I think if you are clipping an amp you have got something seriously wrong.

I get frustrated when people go on and on about how tubes clip nicely or better. Why clip anything at all? It can explain why a relatively small tube amplifier, say 60 Watt, can sound as good as a much bigger solid state one of 240 Watts. But generally clipping is something to be avoided. Don't do it!

In digital recording if you clip a signal it generates harmonic artifacts that sound very bad. So much of poor CD sound can be from bad recording or conversion from analog to digital at the front end of the process. Done right it sounds fine.

The debate about bit depth is also a distraction. A CD has much more Dynamic Range than an LP, but an LP is adequate for almost all music. Sound effects maybe not.

In one of my discussions with the Tube Guru he used the analogy of hearing a bee buzzing on the other side of the garden then it gets hit by a lightning bolt. That is about the DR that a CD is capable of. Need that much?

The real application is in the recording and studio mixing phase where more bits give you lower noise so layering tracks will not lose everything into hiss. Higher bit rates are to facilitate analog input filters of easier slope to prevent frequencies above the Nyquist limit from getting in. That is a problem at the front end.

I like reasoned factual discussion. You can still like this or that, but lets not fight. There still is no best, just preferences. Enjoy the sounds.

The meanings, in short: 1)feeling empty and in need of self-care, 2) in the process of releasing myself from self-imposed restrictions and hesitation to take action that will help us progress (“Now isn’t the time to stop, or you’ll be right back where you started”), and lastly, 3) “success is a combination of education and practical application. Neither step can be avoided… believe in myself and know that we’re working towards mastery”. Those are the three meanings of the cards in that order and orientation (upright vs. reversed). After that, we got a sudden burst of motivation and acceptance, and pushed through a challenging meal, plus a shake for dessert and kombucha, over a few hours. Later into the night, I experienced some nausea, but I breathed through it and it went away. And this morning, we got ready, fueled up with a protein shake and juice, went to the mental health rec center where I challenged myself in ballet and strength training. I had a decent lunch packed and everything and I fully intended to eat it. But I just got SO nauseous all of a sudden and just couldn’t. The nausea lasted for hours. I ended up throwing up the juice and protein shake which hadn’t passed. And then again, again. Horrible. And I realized that I’m probably having a flare-up of gastroparesis and I had been taking for granted my lack of symptoms lately. I wanted to prove to myself that I don’t need the feeding tube. So I pushed myself. With consequences. I’m amused because I got that reading and still thought I could circumvent having to run feeds in order to keep avoiding carbs. And it backfired. So now, if I want to continue my wellness and fitness journey without going downhill, I NEED to run a tube feed to get enough nutrients to recover from today’s undoubtably intense workout. So that’s what I’m doing. Hey. If a cosmic slap on the wrist is what it takes to snap me out of denial, I know I felt that one. Like I literally thought I gave myself food poisoning 😭.
