Hideyuki Oka (1905-1995), a pioneer of Japanese art directors and graphic designers, used traditional Japanese packaging made of natural materials such as wooden boxes, paper wraps, bamboo baskets, and straw wraps because of his profession. Fascinated by its beautiful shape, it was collected all over the country.  He gradually became interested in the act of “wrapping” itself, and began to see what resided there as the peculiar “aesthetic consciousness” that the Japanese culture had nurtured.

Hideyuki Oka produced a book about traditional packages under his own art direction. He has gained a great reputation overseas, and exhibitions on this theme have traveled around the world and have been held at 100 locations in 28 countries. This book is based on the “Package” published by The Mainichi Newspapers in 1972, and is a pictorial record of the 2011 “Wrap: Japanese Traditional Package” exhibition (published by Meguro Museum of Art, BNN Shinsha). This is a newly re-edited version of “Hideyuki Oka” by Ichiro Saga (Tama Art University), a design historian.

The name means the wild rose with hooked thorns that would catch a monkey.

Wild Ume(Prunus mume)s are blooming in white. I plucked two or three branches of buerger raspberries(Rubus buergeri) and gave them to Kyoshi. Hekigotō plucked a vine with red berries and showed it to me, saying, "This is called Sankirai, and in Matsuyama (in Ehime Prefecture) they sometimes wrap rice cakes with these leaves". In my country (Tottori Prefecture), it is called Sarutoriibara. This is what when I was a child, often scratched my hands and feet (with its hooks) when I snuck into the bushes in the hills behind our house. 「星が瞬く(ほしがまたたく/Hoshiga matataku)」: The stars twinkle

「時を重ねる(ときをかさねる/Toki’o kasaneru)」: Time passes

「重ねる(かさねる/Kasaneru)」: pile up

In Japanese, “time passes” is expressed not only as “流れる/Nagareru: flow”, “過ぎる/Sugiru: pass”, but “重ねる/Kasaneru: pile up” because our memories and experiences remain in our hearts and pile up like snow falling on the ground.

「包む(つつむ/Tsutsumu)」: wrap, envelop

「戸惑う(とまどう/Tomadou)」: confused, bewildered, puzzled (I’m not sure but I think 戸惑う is lighter than “confused”. It’s like when you touch new smartphone, you feel “戸惑う” in the very beginning but you’ll get used to it soon. “戸惑う” doesn’t have bad meaning. In case of “confused,” I imagine 「混乱する(こんらんする/Konran-suru)」, like when you don’t know how to use the new smartphone at all.

「凛と(りんと/Rin-to)」: with dignity, with nobility

「姿(すがた/Sugata)」: figure, appearance, shape

「いつまでも(Itsu-mademo)」: forever, eternally (More casual than 「永遠に(えいえんに/Eien-ni)」.)
