A guide to effectively using flashcards
Flashcards were an important part of my preparation for my IGCSE examinations. I found them extremely useful for retaining a wide range of concepts (especially for subjects like biology and psychology) in a simple yet effective way!
I hope y’all find these tips useful!! :)
PART 1
Do not rely solely on them
It’s important to note that flashcards are not a one-way ticket to that A*. It is a combination of several things that essentially leads you to a successful result (eg: past papers, homework, readings, research, etc).
Furthermore, it also depends on what type of material you’re studying and how far you are into the learning process.
Recognise which subject requires them
Flashcards are generally used for knowledge-intensive subjects that require a lot of factual memorisation over a long period of time. These can include the sciences, history, literature, etc.
Subjects like these contain a multitude of relationships, terms, processes and facts that need to be individually internalised in order to achieve a meaningful level of mastery of the overall subject matter.
I didn’t bother using flashcards for subjects like mathematics or business studies.
PART 2
Avoid information overload
it can feel tempting to make flashcards for every little fact and shred of information so that you don't miss it on the exam. However, this usually results in an overwhelming number of decks.
During the initial exposure to the information, make sure that you have thoroughly read through it to isolate the pertinent facts and turn these into question-and-answer flashcards. To do this, I referred to end of unit tests and homework to get a good idea on which aspects of the topic/chapter are typically assessed.
It’s really important to condense the information since flashcards are typically used for REVIEW and to help consolidate your knowledge. Trying to add in an entire chapter of 12 pages really defeats the purpose of using them.
I was constantly worried that I might cut out information that may end up being vital. I was able to remove this fear of mine by ensuring that I only put down one concept/question per flashcard and then list down the components that made up that particular concept.
For example, these were my notes on medicinal drugs, with a focus on antibiotics. One of the key requirements listed in my specification was:
“To describe the functions of antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial infection”
I used this to understand what pieces of information to isolate.
As you can see above, I only listed down the functions of antibiotics and nothing else. I didn’t mention the fact that they were ineffective against viruses because there is a reason to that and the concept can be better explored in another card. I instead, chose to focus on how antibiotics combat bacterial infections.
This saves a lot of time during the revision process and also ensures that the amount of information you have to know isn’t too overwhelming.
Create Mental Connections
This can be easily achieved by mixing pictures and words or using mnemonic devices. These help increase your brain’s ability to recall what you’re studying. Just be careful to only use these when absolutely necessary.
Organisation of Your Flashcards
It’s highly likely that you may never use your flashcards when they are stacked one over the other until they form a skyscraper. This is where organisation comes into play.
For biology in particular, I organised my decks by chapter and then divided it into decks for the sub-topics within the chapter:
As you can see, I basically divided the chapter of “Biological Molecules” into those sub-topics which made the whole revision process less overwhelming and it also helped me plan what I wanted to study because I would have already had a basic overview of what I’m familiar with and what I needed to review further.
PART 3
The Process of Retrieving the Answer
When going through your decks, it’s important to note down the answer or say it out loud instead of adopting the “oh I know this already, so it’s fine” attitude. You should be able to hold yourself accountable and avoid falling for the false illusion of confidence. Even if you are already familiar with that particular piece of information, there’s no harm in reinforcing it again. Better to be safe than sorry.
Shuffle Your Decks
This is an incredibly effective way of challenging yourself with spacing and interleaving, instead of going through your flashcard deck in the same order again and again. You won’t be able to properly retain those concepts by trying to retrieve information based on the deck and card number!
Spaced Repetition
Spaced Repetition is an evidence-based learning technique boosts learning by spreading revision out over time so learning is not crammed all at once.

PART 4
Anki
This app allows you to create online flashcards which you can use to test yourself in practice sessions. It uses an algorithm built around active recall and spaced repetition and hence learns as you progress through your studies and revision.
Anki is available for free on desktop and on all mobile devices except iOS, but I highly recommend it as it’s in-built algorithm and other features (more information about the app including the download link can be found here) were incredibly useful for me!
Quizlet
This is another online learning tool that allows users to create study tools such as interactive flashcards, tests, and study games.
The app makes it simple to start creating cards on the topic of your choice. In addition to text, you can also add images from your computer or Quizlet’s library. It also provides you with a variety of options when studying your cards. For more information on the features that Quizlet employs, visit this link
Quizlet is free but provides the option of a paid premium plan which includes additional features.
Brainscape
This app also implements spaced repetition, which has been shown to increase rate of learning.
Brainscape allows you to rate your confidence in each flashcard, on a scale of 1-5, which subsequently determines how frequently to repeat the flashcard. Lower-confidence items are repeated more frequently until you upgrade your confidence rating.
Like Quizlet, it is a free app but provides a paid pro plan with additional features.
Once again I want to emphasize that to truly succeed with flashcards, you need to learn how to create them correctly. The best app isn’t very useful if you’re not writing effective questions and answers.

Personality
Perma is an intense, cautious, volatile, and resentful teenager. She’ll do whatever it takes just to make it through the day regardless of who she has to harm or fight. She loathes adults and doesn’t trust them or their judgement, and always believes they're going to hurt her. Nor does she like being told what to do. So she often gets into a lot of fights with older demons, Perma will at times rush head first into a fight without thinking things through due to being blinded by her violent nature and past trauma. She has little to no friends or acquaintances because of the sheer brute force of her powers, somewhat lack of control and unwillingness to listen to people. Despite being unapproachable most of the time, deep down Perma wants a kind soul to turn to for love and guidance. But, pushes away this feeling due to the bad hand life and death has handed her.
History
Born in Vik, Iceland in 2005, since she could walk; Petra knew nothing but misery and neglect. Abused and mistreated by her egg and sperm donor, growing up in a strange cult certainly didn't help little Petra. Forced to deal with going hungry and cold from the old shredded clothes she was forced to wear. As well as participating in her mother's questionable practices. Her family often took part in the ancient art of Icelandic witchcraft. Writing questionable symbols everywhere in the blood of animals they caught. Reading from old books with disturbing otherworldly images. Even carving up their own bodies as a sign of devotion to some strange dark entity. Petra didn't understand these events but knew only bad things could come from it.
Life didn’t get much better for the young Icelandic when she was set up to be a sacrifice in one of the cult's shamanic ceremonies, she managed to slip away and ran until she arrived at an old rundown village. Only 9 years old at the time. From there, the next 4 years were awful. Petra had to survive on scraps she found in the trash or steal food and clothing from unsuspecting villagers. Years on the street, being treated like dirt from those around her, a child no one wanted around, caused Petra to grow hateful to world and the vile people who inhabited it. No one had any concern for her. No one cared about her. Her life meant nothing to ANYBODY. So after that, the lives of others didn’t mean a damn thing to her.
At 11, Petra committed her first murder. She was low on scraps and slowly starving. Following a frail elderly woman with a bag full of food, Petra took out an ice pick she had swiped from some workers and drove it into the back of the woman’s head.
Soon after, the dreaded streets Petra wandered were now becoming littered with the bodies of the people she stole from. Little did she realize, these malicious acts were changing in ways that were beyond human understanding. Something malevolent and cold started growing inside her body. Warping her soul.
Two years, this continued...until Petra chose the wrong target. A lanky young man, who looked a few years older than her, was smoking in an alley. Driven by survival, bloodlust and greed to what type of goods the man had on his person, Petra struck with her signature ice pick. Too bad, the man wasn’t unarmed. Nor was he alone. That’s all she remembered from that specific day. And how she wished she just kept walking.
The man was part of a group of sex traffickers looking around for young girls and women to add to their market. And 14 year old Petra was added to that collection.
The following year was a new level of Hell for the young girl. Beaten, abused, used in the most vile of ways by these men and others. Petra resisted at each turn but the suffering increased more and more. Then the vile concoction, meth they called it, they forced her to take each day. Told her that it would make her more “enjoyable company”. Some days and nights blurred into each other. This...drug made her forget the pain, the misery, the horrid existence she was subjected to. But reality came back full throttle to punch her in the face once it wore off. It made Petra feel disgusting and free at the same time. Just like the girls around her, empty shells with blissful smiles on their faces.
She was right at the edge of just ending it, but the stubborn part of her refuse to give her tormentors the satisfaction. One night, while she was getting prepared for a client, Petra managed to break away and shank one of the guards with an icicle she snatched from outside of a window. That kill was easy, but the second guard managed to let out a shout before Petra rammed the spike into his eye.
Petra rushed out into the winter forest, away from the building she was held captive. Wearing nothing but a pair of booty shorts and a flimsy tank top and armed with a bloody icicle. The traffickers hot on her trail with guns and rope. Each day of hiding, running, and avoiding bullets was made worse with trying to fight the freezing cold. One bullet managed to pierce her side. On that night, Petra finally found a small cave to duck into, her feet and hands black and swollen. She was practically a light blue.
Using the last of her strength to make a small, pitiful fire, Petra packed her bullet wound with snow as a sad attempt to stop the bleeding. She leaned against the cave wall and closed her eyes. Thinking back to all the events that transpired that lead her to this. The memories slowly getting darker and darker...
She woke up abruptly from crashing down onto the ground. The teen shot up, disoriented and looked around. Her eyes fell onto a large sign reading, “Welcome to Hell.”

Frostbite- can freeze up any part of an enemy's body where she can turn the tissues and flesh into solid ice making the victim shatter into pieces due to freeze drying, or cause a swelling making it hard to move for the victim.
Frozen Surface- can cause surfaces (often floor) to emit ice/cold, causing ice/cold-damage on anything in contact with her or the ice.
Hail Generation- can generate and project hail.
Ice Aura- can release and surround herself in/with ice/cold for defensive and/or offensive purposes, possibly becoming almost untouchable and granting her various abilities/attacks.

Hazbin Relationships:
Charlie- Put off by her eagerness and determination to redeem sinners. Didn’t trust her at first and kept her distance. Slowly warmed up to Charlie’s kindness and learned to trust her and others.
Vaggie- Disliked her attitude, and authority. Would tick her off with snide comments and constantly freezing her and/or Charlie. Started to bond over their dislike of Alastor and men a bit. Told Vaggie of her life and hardships, now have a big sis/little sis connection.
Angel Dust- Because of his sexual nature, she was terrified of Angel and avoided him. Even freezing him solid a few times out of fear/self-defense. Calm down a little once, she learned that he’s gay. The two became close once Angel shared his own stories of abuse. Also adores Fat Nuggets.
Alastor- Instantly loathes Alastor due to his disregard for personal space and creeper smile. Sees him as a closet pervert and often talks trash about his radio broadcasts and calls him an "a limp dick old man". Perma was unaware of Alastor's reputation, but sees him as a sicko who likes to inflate his own ego and harrass those he sees as beneath him. One of the few demons who doesn't fear Alastor, but that's due to her own ignorance and inexperience. Often tries to start fights with him by crude derogatory comments. Or freezing him.
Husker- Didn't think much of Husk at first, but liked the fact the he's a cat. The two barely interacted until she sang to herself in German and Husk responded back. They slowly began to converse with each other more and more. Husk actually listening to her woes and offering some advice. Vice versa. Due to Husk keeping to himself and respecting boundaries, Perma respects and listens to Husk more than anyone. Calms down whenever he's around. The two soon form a father/daughter like relationship.
Niffty- Was put off by Niffty's persnickety and energetic persona. Also irritated her by the frost she leaves behind. But they grow to tolerate each other over time.

Food Additives: What Parents Should Know
Food additives have been used for thousands of years, ever since people realized salt could keep meat from spoiling. Today, there are more than 10,000 additives approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to preserve, package, or modify the taste, look, texture, or nutrients in foods. But increasing evidence suggests some chemicals used as food additives should be avoided―especially for children.
How do food additives affect kids?
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) policy, "Food Additives and Child Health," explains that a rising number of studies suggest some food additives may interfere with hormones, growth, and development Some may also raise a child's risk of obesity. Children may be particularly susceptible to the effects of these additives, given that they have more exposure than adults due to their size and dietary intake.
Below is a list of the most commonly used food additives and the current health concerns. This list includes indirect additives, which are used in processing or packaging, as well as direct additives that are put directly into foods.
How to reduce your family's exposure to food additives
Buy fresh or frozen. It's best to buy and serve fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables when possible.
Eat fewer processed meats. Try to avoid processed meats, such as hot dogs, ham and meats in pre-packaged meals, especially during pregnancy.
Wash plastic food containers and utensils by hand, rather than in the dishwasher. Heat can cause plastics to leak BPA and phthalates into food. Avoid microwaving food or beverages―including infant formula and breastmilk―in plastic, if possible.
Use glass and stainless steel. Especially when cooking or serving hot foods, use alternatives to plastic, such as glass or stainless steel, when possible.
Learn plastic recycling codes. Look at the recycling code on the bottom of products to find the plastic type. Try to avoid plastics with recycling codes 3 (phthalates), 6 (styrene), and 7 (bisphenols) unless plastics are labeled as "biobased" or "greenware," which means they are made from corn and do not contain bisphenols.
Wash your hands. Because chemicals from plastics are so common in items we touch throughout the day, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling food.
Speak out. Join the AAP and other organizations calling for more research into food additives' safety, including improvements to the U.S. food additive regulatory program and retesting some previously approved additives. A recent review of nearly 4,000 food additives showed that 64% of them had had no research showing they were safe for people to eat or drink. While some change to the current law could be achieved by the FDA, some may require congressional action.
Common questions from parents about food additives
How do I find out which additives are in foods?
Additives that are put directly in foods are listed on ingredient labels, but often with their chemical names. For example, salt may be listed as sodium chloride, sugar as sucrose, vitamin C as ascorbic acid, and vitamin E as alpha-tocopherol. Artificial colors are usually listed by their numbers, such as Blue #2 or Yellow #5. However, there are also indirect additives from processing or packaging materials that are not listed on the ingredient labels. These can include chemicals from plastic, glues, dyes, paper, cardboard, and different types of coatings.
Are additives a problem in any baby products?
The FDA recently banned BPA from baby bottles and sippy cups, but the chemical is still used in some food and beverage containers. Many companies have voluntarily removed BPA from their products, but in many cases replaced it with chemicals such as bisphenol S (BPS) that may have similar health effects. In 2017, the Consumer Product Safety Commission banned the use of some phthalates in child-care products such as teething rings.
Do artificial food colors cause childhood hyperactivity?
More research is needed to better understand how artificial food colors (AFCs) may or may not impact a child's behavior. This is because much of the original research on these additives were animal studies that did not include behavioral affects. For some children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other problem behaviors, the AAP says that until we know more, it may be helpful to eliminate AFCs from their diet if they seem to worsen symptoms.
The future of food additives
Many new techniques are being researched that will improve how additives are produced. One approach is the use of biotechnology, which can use simple organisms to produce food additives. These additives are the same as food components found in nature.
Talk with your pediatrician
Although there are ways to limit the amount of potentially harmful food additives in your family's diet, stronger federal food safety requirements will help keep all children healthy.
If you're concerned about food additives, talk with your pediatrician. Your regional Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU) have staff who can also talk with parents about concerns over environmental toxins.
There are many different methods used to produce natural plant extract powder. Durning an extraction process a solvent is used to draw out the plant extracts, common solvents utilised are water or alcohol. Once the desired compounds are extracted the solvent is then removed. The plant extraction method used depends on whether specific compounds of the plant are desired to be extracted or the full range of plant compounds. Here we take a close look at the different methods of extraction.
1. LIPOPHILIC EXTACTION // Lipophilic are oil loving (fat soluble) and therefore soluble in oil. Macerated or Infused oil are Lipophilic extracts. This includes fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), carotenoids, bisabolol and other lipophilic active ingredients. Note: Vitamin C is an extremely sensitive hydrophilic vitamin and therefore it is NOT present in plant oils, however some plant oils exhibit Vitamin C behaviours, research, I am sure one day may explain these 'effects'.
HOW IT WORKS // Plant material is added to a carrier oil. Maceration is performed as cold or warm-cold. Usually the procedure takes a few days to several weeks and the plant material is renewed several times during the maceration period. Heat or sun are applied as sources of energy. Ingredient Example // St Johns Wort Infused Oil
2. SUPERCRITICAL EXTRACTION (CO2) //Supercritical extraction uses CO2 (Carbon dioxide - an oxygen-free process) instead of organic solvents.
HOW IT WORKS // At a temperature and pressure above its critical point, a molecule will become a supercritical fluid, which is not quite a gas, but not quite a liquid. Supercritical fluids can be used under high pressure to extract a full range of phytochemical types. CO2 has a high diffusion rate that can penetrate the material quickier than liquids. It is a pure substance found in nature and is, thus, easily removed from the final extract without leaving any residue.
Among its advantages, supercritical CO2 extraction has the flexibility to extract specific compounds, and it operates at temperatures lower than expeller press and organic solvent methods. It also involves no oxygen, thus better preserving the extracted compounds.
CO2 extraction delivers the superior active properties of the plant without the use of any chemical solvents or the production of residues & impurities or issues with rancidity. Supercritical CO2 extraction is not ideal for all ingredients, this method is only applicable to materials that are lipid soluble.
A natural instant fruit juice powder is a powder made from the juice of fresh fruit and then dried into a fine powder. Fruit juice powders are basically concentrated fruit juice dehydrated by spray-drying method. Its moisture content is 1%-3%. The spray drying process is considered a conventional method to convert fruit juices to powder form. It can be used in drinks, dressings, marinades, desserts, smoothies etc. One must not get confused between fruit powder and fruit juice powder as the two are totally different. Powders are made from drying the whole fruits while fruit juice powders are made from drying the pure juice.
What is an API?
An API is defined as a specification of possible interactions with a software component. What does that mean, exactly? Well, imagine that a car was a software component. Its API would include information about what it can do—accelerate, brake, turn on the radio, etc. It would also include information about how you could make it do those things. For instance, to accelerate, you put your foot on the gas pedal and push.
The API doesn’t have to explain what happens inside the engine when you put your foot on the accelerator. That’s why, if you learned to drive a car with an internal combustion engine, you can get behind the wheel of an electric car without having to learn a whole new set of skills. The what and how information come together in the API definition, which is abstract and separate from the car itself.
One thing to keep in mind is that the name of some APIs is often used to refer to both the specification of the interactions and to the actual software component you interact with. The phrase “Twitter API,” for example, not only refers to the set of rules for programmatically interacting with Twitter, but is generally understood to mean the thing you interact with, as in “We’re doing analysis on the tweets we got from the Twitter API.”

Digestive Diseases and Stress
Did you know that many diseases can worsen or even be triggered by emotional stress?
Heart disease, Diabetes, Gastrointestinal problems, Alzheimer's disease, Depression, Asthma and Obesity are some diseases, just to name a few.
And during these difficult times that we are all facing now, it’s not uncommon to feel sad, depressed, emotional, and stressed out. Many of the fun and special things we used to do have been taken away from us.
Things like gathering with family, going to the movies with friends, going for dinner with your spouse or Sunday Brunch with the girls, traveling with your special someone, etc...are among the type of things our clients tell us they miss the most.
In today's article, we'll present to you eight different ways to help stay calm and find that inner peace to this chaotic current situation we are facing. We hope you try all these methods and see what works for you best. Also, know your body. If you know you have trouble lying down on the floor, then don't follow such exercise.
Also, feel free to share this article with other friends, because even though they may not be suffering from a digestive disease, they can still be going through a rough time adapting to this new kind of life brought by the coronavirus pandemic.
Eight Tips to start feeling better at Peace
1. Acupressure
Going for a massage or getting acupuncture is a great way to manage negative feelings, but it’s not always easy to find time in your day to make it happen. They can also be costly and besides, they are may not even be open for business in most of the US. Have you heard of acupressure? You can practice it on yourself by identifying pressure points in your body to calm anger or anxiety for instant anxiety relief.
For instance, putting pressure with your fingers or your hand at certain points of the body can release that tension and will relax your body.
One area to start with is the point where the inside of your wrist forms a crease with your hand. Press your thumb on this area for 2 minutes. This can help relieve tension.
2. Exercise
Get rid of that negative emotional energy by exercising. Most parks are open now so you can take your bike, go for a walk or jog. Engaging in some physical activity releases serotonin, which helps you calm down and feel much better.
Avoid aggressive physical activity that includes the expression of anger, such as punching walls or screaming, as it has shown to actually increase feelings of anger. Such types of activities reinforce negative emotions, because you end up feeling good as the result of being angry.
3. Music
Listening to your favorite music can have a very calming and soothing effect on your mind and body.
So grab your headphones and tune in to your favorite music apps! You can even dance, which will enhance the positive experience. If you don’t feel like dancing, turn on your radio and enjoy some favorite tunes while sitting back and relaxing on the couch.
4. Breathe
Many experts say breathing is the number one and most effective way to reduce anger and anxiety in a quick amount of time.
When you’re feeling angry, nervous or anxious, you tend to take quick and shallow breaths. This sends a message to the brain, causing a positive feedback loop reinforcing your fight-or-flight response. That’s why taking long, deep calming breaths disrupts that loop and helps you calm down.
There are various breathing techniques to help you calm down.
One is three-part breathing. Three-part breathing is when you to take one deep breathe in and then exhale fully while paying attention to your body.
Once you get comfortable with deep breathing, you can change the ratio of inhalation and exhalation to 1:2 (you slow down your exhalation so that it’s twice as long as your inhalation).
5. Be truthful to yourself
Admitting that you’re frustrated, anxious, emotional, etc...can actually give you peace. The anxiety and anger you have within may start to decrease slowly. So allow yourself to say exactly how you feel and why you are feeling like that. Talk to yourself and don't focus on only negatives points, look for the positives in your situation.
6. Change your focus
If you are found in a stressful situation, either excuse yourself or just leave the room immediately. If you are watching the news and that is troubling you, change the channel to something more positive. If you are talking to someone on the phone and end up in a negative discussion, politely excuse yourself the minute things get tense, as nothing good will come from two people blasting at each other.
The tip here is to stay away from negativity in a given situation that is causing you stress.
7. Relax your body
This one is as easy as it gets...When you’re upset, it feels like every muscle in your body is tense, so practicing progressive muscle relaxation can help you calm down and center yourself.
If your body allows, lie down on the floor or your bed with your arms out by your side. Make sure your feet aren’t crossed and your hands aren’t in fists. Start at your toes and tell yourself to relax the muscles. Slowly move up your body, telling yourself to relax each muscle of your body (and even organs) until you get to your head. It might take a few minutes, but you'll feel much better afterwards.
8. Think it through
Ask yourself if this issue that is bothering you or this person who is upsetting you, will actually matter this time next week? How important is it? Is it solvable? Are you going to allow this person or situation to steal your inner peace?
This allows the thinking to shift focus and you can “reality test” the situation and see if it’s even important to get upset about.
Keep in mind, most of the times, these are issues that are pretty upsetting right in the moment and can surely ruin your day, but they will lose importance in a day, a week, a month...In a year, you might not even remember them!

i realised this week that i’m having sort of a mini-breakdown in terms of mental health - which is as okay as it’s going to get, but i find it funny that it feels quite calm and self-aware, almost wry as opposed to times of old with more incoherent, volatile and confusing experiences and kind of muddling through. to best describe it i came to write this post with a specific image in mind. i’m in a deck chair, the sky is blue and the air is gentle and mild. the deckchair is perched neatly on the top of a grassy cliff edge, where one might sit to gaze at the sea in the summer - but only for a moment. it’s very high. so, it’s like watching the ground beneath you crumble in slow motion and even though you have the advantage of time since it’s so slow from your perspective, you scan the environment and you immediately know there’s nothing to grab onto to save yourself and you have to use the time you have to prepare instead - not quite to hit the ground at the very bottom, but to hit a more stable cliff edge some ways down! it will hurt, it doesn’t assuage that pang of fear about the feeling of falling itself and you get that but now you’re watching the foundations crumble by the molecule it feels like, gently pulling apart from the larger part of the structure and calculating which limbs you’ll need to splint and how you can best arrange your body to minimise damage and be up again as soon as possible. like watching sand in an hourglass. wild!
but i hate the word breakdown anyway, because he word has dramatic connotations and really, when i use it tonight, i mean to say that it’s coming to my attention that the events from (the end of)spring/summer have had an effect on my psyche that has impeded me enough to bother my daily function, y’know? like i am going to have to nurse it back to health rather than being able to evaluate, dust myself off and move on - but that’s okay. the way things have affected me have been mostly sense-oriented meaning a big spike in sensory overload, and by extension more heightened than usual sensitivity to my environment, which i honestly find unbearable bc it’s making me cry a lot, inappropriately! yesterday, which was meant to be my easy day, i cried at the hair salon when my (usual!) hairdresser dropped a paint can that i couldn’t anticipate, then on the bus to my next appointment because the empty bus filled up and i was overwhelmed to the point of like, passing out, etc, etc. the point is, i feel varying levels of significant discomfort about stuff like this all the time, and i always have to sort of excuse myself briefly, (mentally or physically, whatever the sitch calls for) process and swallow it until i can pick it apart and deal with it properly later on fairly healthily - but during this time i have a highly diminished ability to field this discomfort like i usually do, and obviously to me that signifies emotional chaos! my trauma specialist is back and i’ve gone back to therapy, and my next appointment is wednesday. it’s helping and i’m making a start to repairing the damage and minimising this feeling of like, being overwhelmed/feeling helpless, but in the meantime it’s like... yeah, i’m actually very much aware of the diminished ability to function in everyday situations that normally i can just about navigate, and MUCH better than this on a good day lol! and i know where it came from, why it’s happening etc. i see it, and so it’s like... i just sort of have to watch it happen, really? i can hardly get into therapy every day and i need a few sessions to really get back on track, so it’s going to be a few weeks for me at least with one appointment per week or so, so in the meantime i’m using really visceral, last ditch tricks to try to get through (like breathing techniques, grounding, travelling music, stress balls, ‘happy place’ fantasy escapes which is a REAL old one) and am also having to kind of accept that the tears are going to come whenever they want to actually, so not to freak out quite so much if they happen! obviously i don’t entirely embrace it emotionally (like, let myself off completely and just be like ‘haha wAIL BINCH IT’S TEARS SEASON’) since i would often look like i’m crying or non-verbal for no reason like, in the street or when otherwise being a person - but i’m now relaxing a bit more about it when it is happening, and taking sort of countermeasures. packing tissues so that i can dab on immediate arrival and it can often be subtle, and getting out my favourite pair of snazzy circle sunglasses and taking them everywhere with me so that i don’t have to deal with anything related to it tbh. makes me much more comfortable, hides the first emergence of tears, then even once i’ve wiped my face when they escape i don’t have to deal with walking around with red, puffy eyes or any bollocks like that and can generally avoid being approached so i just wear them whenever i want now lol! then at home, i’m accepting it there too and just moving right on afterwards to do something else! i’m consuming a lot of media at the moment which is a minefield, but it’s like, you just have to feel it, try to pop a plaster on it until therapy and then move on! anyway, it’s all just... wild! i definitely didn’t want to really accept that this stuff had destabilised me, but they have and now it’s time to pivot with myself emotionally, work with my therapist and keep it pushing when i can.
