Skin involvement or cutaneous Crohn Disease
What happens to your skin when you have Crohn's?
Skin involvement or cutaneous Crohn Disease occurs in about 40% of people with Crohn Disease. Some are mild skin conditions and others are extremely painful and dangerous.
Things such as skin tags, purple sores and swelling around the perineal and perianal region are common.
More serious things like, painful vulval or scrotal fissures, ulceration and pyoderma gangrenosum, which are large open sores on your legs and sometimes other areas of your body, need medical assistance immediately.
If you see any abnormality on your skin after being diagnosed with Crohn's, no matter how small it may be, make an apt with your doctor ASAP.
Do you suffer from any of these?

Ulcerative Colitis (UC) Symptoms
Have you been feeling not like yourself lately? 😲 Having odd symptoms like nausea, diarrhea, abdominal cramps?
If these symptoms don't go away quickly, visit a gastroenterologist, as these are common signs of having Ulcerative Colitis (UC).
UC causes long-lasting inflammation and produces ulcers within your digestive tract. Here's 8 facts to quickly learn about it:
1. UC is 1 of the 2 major illnesses associated with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
2. It only occurs in the inner lining of the large intestine or rectum.
3. This disease has periods of remission and relapse.
4. It usually attacks young people, between the ages of 15-40 yrs. old, but it can also affect children.
5. Other common symptoms: rectal bleeding, frequent fever, loss of appetite, loss of body fluids/nutrients, weight loss, fatigue, liver problems, redness/swelling of the eyes, joint pain.
6. In order to diagnose if you have UC, your doctor will look at your medical history and perform a physical exam, which can include samples from your bowel movement and blood tests.
7. To take a deeper look, your doctor may suggest a colonoscopy.
8. Treatment can help, but currently UC can't be cured.
Digestinol
Digestinol is an all-natural supplement that helps support and promote digestive health as well as support your immune system. Its biggest benefit is the ability to target and reduce inflammation within your digestive system. Inflammation along your digestive system is one of the main reasons for pain/discomfort associated with digestive disorders. It can help with both constipation as well as diarrhea, because it gets your body back to normal so the amount of fluid in your colon is regulated the way it should be.
What is Digestinol?
Our product contains AMP (Aloe Mucilaginous Polysaccharides) which is an all-natural molecule found in the aloe vera plant. It is known to enhance the body’s immune system due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. We have a 97-98% success rate reported from people who take Digestinol as directed for 90 days or longer.
If you are not interested in prescription medications to treat your condition and prefer a more natural approach, Digestinol makes all-natural capsules that contain a very specific form of Aloe Polysaccharides to target the inflammation along your digestive tract.
These capsules also provide your body with the nutrients that it is lacking in order to take back control of itself. Digestinol isn't just Aloe Vera powder, Aloe Vera (contains Aloein) which irritates your digestive system and can cause diarrhea. Digestinol undertakes very specific additional steps in order to remove the Aloein during their extraction process to focus on only the beneficial portions of the Aloe Leaf, the long chain Aloe Mucilaginous Polysaccharide molecules.
Since Digestinol is 100% all-natural it doesn't bring along the side effects that other chemically based prescription medications have. We tell our customers to think of Digestinol as an all-natural digestive system specific vitamin that reduces inflammation and provides your body with specific nutrients that allow it to take back control of itself.
Our Digestinol capsules will also help to balance the good and bad bacteria levels in your body allowing it to regain control of its normal operations.

Kids and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
If you have kids, you are well aware of how children and even teens, can become irritable all of the sudden.  It can last a few minutes or a few hours, mainly if they haven't slept well or they didn't get what they wanted, like the newest video game or permission to go to a concert 5 hrs. away from home.
Sometimes, the irritability can last on and off for a few days, if your child is feeling under the weather with the flu, tummy ache, fever, etc...
But what happens when your child's intestines become irritable for days, months and even years?
Then this may mean your child is suffering from a condition like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) - and trust us, it’s definitely not fun!
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is actually a very common problem in both kids and adults.
This disease affects your large intestine and the way it works, changing your daily life by just a little bit or a lot depending on a case by case situation.
The main function of the large intestine, which is also known as the colon, is to absorb water and many nutrients from the partially digested food that enters the colon from your small intestine. Anything that wasn't absorbed will be slowly moved on a pathway out of your body. The undigested and unabsorbed food particles are also known as waste (poop).
Now how does your intestine becomes irritable?
To have a bowel movement, the muscles in the colon and the rest of the body have to work together as a team.  If this process gets interrupted, the contents of the colon can't move along very smoothly.  It stops and goes, doesn't move at all, or sometimes moves too fast.  This can hurt a lot and make your child (or anyone) feel awful.
Painful and uncomfortable symptoms such as cramps, constipation, and diarrhea will be part of your child's daily life. Sometimes, the symptoms go away, and then all of the sudden come back.  Puffiness or bloating in the belly area is also another common symptom.  The feeling described by kids is that it feels like you can't quite finish going to the bathroom. Or, if you have gas, instead of being able to pass it, it feels like is trapped inside.
While no one really knows what causes Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), it seems that it runs in families.  So if someone in your family has or has had Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and your child is having issues similar to these there's a good chance this may be the cause of your child’s discomfort.
Ask everyone in the family and also tell your child's story, since many feel it is embarrassing and something too private to share, they may have not told anyone before, especially the older generations. However, this could certainly help anyone who has it, open up about it.
So what happens when your child has Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and attends school?  Many children can become scared to go to school, being afraid of accidents or not being able to go to the bathroom when needed. Many parents decide to take their child out from school and do home-schooling instead.  While some kids adapt great to the sudden change, others may struggle.
The benefit of staying home with the comforts of using your own bathroom at any time you want is quiet awesome for anyone, but while it’s surely helpful in that area, it can also harm in other areas.
Remember that kids enjoy the company of other kids by playing and talking with them. Being stuck at home with only adults, can stress some kids, who can isolate and become sad, depressed, lonely...
A very simple solution so that your son or daughter can enjoy school and continue with his or her daily school activities, is by arranging a meeting with all of your child's teachers. This way the teachers are completely aware of this condition and situation, and will understand it better.
An understanding that your child may have to go to the bathroom unexpectedly, even a few times during class on a given day, will give your child an automatic pass to the bathroom, with no hassle, which he/she may just have to raise his/her hand and go, or simply stand up and go as needed, without having to ask the teacher out loud and have an actual pass being written right at that moment.  This can be crucial in order to prevent an accident.
Having this kind of discrete, peace of mind, your child will feel comfortable to attend school daily.  He/she won't feel stressed or nervous at all, knowing that the teachers have his/her back and your child can count on them. While truth should be always the chosen patch. We all know how kids are...
It is very important to keep this condition discrete, in order to avoid picking, teasing and bullying, which can easily start out of a condition like this. This will only make it more stressful and embarrassing for your child.
With this being said, stress can surely affect kids with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), too.  Studies show that stress can speed up your colon and slow your stomach down. Stressful feelings also can be a trigger for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).  For instance, let's say a kid has an important test at school the next day and is worrying about it, that's stress.  Or if a kid sees his/her parents fighting and begins to feel worried, that's stress as well.
Another example could be bullying happening at school. Talk to your child as a friend and ask direct questions in a friendly manner. Let your child know you have his or her back always and to know that door is always open to talk about anything, in case a chat is not successfully happening that night.
Besides stress, another common trigger is food. This varies from child to child, but usually sweet stuff and greasy, fried foods, which are many of our children’s favorite things to eat, bother some kids.  French fries, pizza, chocolate are just a few samples to mention. Also, drinks high in sugar may cause diarrhea in other kids, while sodas will usually give lots of gas.
Learning how to cope with stress, eating healthier foods and enjoying better drinking options, will help manage your little one or teenager's life much better, and allow them to continue participating in the many fun activities, events, parties that they like, even when suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
Studies show between 5% to 20% of kids may have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). While it can be very frustrating, the great news is that Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) doesn't often lead to serious problems, but if you see some of these symptoms we recommend you to visit a Doctor as soon as possible.

Tea and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Many of us enjoy a good cup of tea in the evenings, while others love a tall glass of iced tea during the day. What would you say if we told you that tea can be very beneficial for those with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?
It’s been shown than some tea can contribute to the easing of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) symptoms, but we suggest you talk to you doctor first and see if these types of teas are something you can start drinking more often, and which types of tea will be the most beneficial for your system.
Here's a list of 5 different types of teas that you can consider:
Ginger Tea
Ginger Tea has been commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine for many generations.
People frequently consume ginger for symptoms associated with an upset digestive system, according to the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders.
It is believed that ginger extract may help:
• Decrease inflammation
* Promote movement in your intestines
• Make your stomach lining stronger
Ginger tea is available in most supermarkets or natural food stores and is sold in pre-packaged tea bags.
You can also boil a few slices of ginger and add a little bit of honey to make your own ginger honey tea. Another idea is adding turmeric to the mix.
 Chamomile Tea
Chamomile tea is one of the most popular types of herbal teas. The flavor is light and very soothing.
Many people take chamomile tea to relieve an upset stomach or to relax after a stressful day. It can also offer benefits for people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) since digestive symptoms can be related to stress.
You can find chamomile tea mostly anywhere where groceries are sold. Price is also very affordable, compared to other teas.
 Turmeric Tea
Turmeric is another natural herb that has been studied in people who suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
In a study published in 2005, researchers examined the effect of turmeric extract tablets on Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) symptoms in adults. The participants were asked to take 1 or 2 tablets each day for 8 weeks.
At the end of the study, researchers found that the turmeric extract decreased abdominal pain. About two-thirds of those people, who received the turmeric extract, had an improvement in their symptoms.
Since then, there have been more studies on the effect of turmeric on inflammation in bowel diseases. It’s shown that it acts as an anti-oxidant, which is a health benefit for someone with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
Turmeric tea is sold in pre-packaged tea bags and may be harder to find at your local supermarket.  You'll have to visit a natural food store or order online. You can also make your own turmeric tea at home by boiling water and adding ground turmeric or a piece of turmeric root.
You can also mix turmeric with lemongrass and cinnamon to make a tasty mixture.
If you happen to suffer from Diabetes or gallbladder problems, it is especially important to talk to your doctor before you consume this type of tea. Your blood sugars may be altered; it can also worsen your acid reflux and cause stomach discomfort. Another concern is turmeric’s impact on blood clotting.
 Peppermint Tea
Peppermint tea is so refreshing! Studies have shown that peppermint reduces the severity of pain for people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) compared to a placebo. However, peppermint tea is not recommended for all people. People with gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD), hiatal hernias or gallbladder problems should not drink this tea.
The risks of drinking peppermint tea otherwise are low, yet the benefits can be significant. Research shows that peppermint tea can reduce bowel spasms and help the liver detoxify the body.
You can find peppermint tea in most supermarkets.
 Fennel Tea
Fennel tea seems to help people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) since it can help relax the intestinal muscle and relieve gas.  It has a sweet flavor similar to aniseed.
Fennel tea can be purchased in pre-packaged tea bags or brewed at home. You may have to go to a natural food shop to get it or order it online.
One important note to keep in mind is that, fennel tea may not be recommended for pregnant women, and that it may interact with certain medications.
As mentioned before, we recommend talking to your doctor before buying or consuming any of these teas. A doctor or registered dietitian can help you develop an individualized plan to manage your Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) symptoms. If you get the OK from them, be sure to get teas that are caffeine free.

Constipation and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Constipation and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
We've talked many times in the past about suffering from diarrhea as a symptom from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), but we really haven't discussed much about having constipation, which can be just as painful and uncomfortable.
Bad stomachaches, intense pain and bloating are common symptoms when having constipation. The feeling of being so full is not a good one to say the least. Mainly because you can't empty out your bowels, yet we have to keep eating more food. Also, many times bowel movements can be extremely painful to the point that they can bring tears to your eyes.
Below are some important details to take note of:
• Understand that there's no single, best way to treating constipation caused by Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
• Understand that you are not alone in this battle. There are many people who suffer from constipation, including people who don't have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Additionally, babies and children also suffer from this.
• Don't try to treat yourself without talking with your doctor first, as there are health risks when taking laxatives and supplements regularly.
• Some people notice that many times doing a mix of therapies to get relief works best.
• Changes in diet is what seems to work the best for most people.
• Stress management and meditation have been reported as great ways to cope with constipation.
• Doing exercise can help you a lot too.
When you are constipated, monitor what you eat and try to exclude or limit things that block your intestines and can cause constipation. Did you know that fiber reduces constipation by softening the stool, making it easier to pass? Many of us don't come close to eating the daily fiber we need and that doctors suggest.
·         For women, its 25 grams of fiber and for men its 38 grams.
Make a point to eat as much fiber as possible, but do it gradually. Here are a few examples of food you can consume to help you ease your constipation troubles:
• Fresh fruits (Not frozen)
• Dried plums
• Dried fruit (3 portions a day)
• Raisins (1 tablespoon a day)
• Fresh fruit juice
• Prune juice
• Whole-grain bread
• Ground flaxseed
• Fresh vegetables (Not frozen)
• Grilled vegetables, use very little o no oil to cook them.
• Beans
• Chamomile as a hot or cold drink
Keep in mind that some foods will affect each person in different ways. For some people, drinking prune juice can work great one way, but on the other hand, it will take them to the bathroom immediately and then you'll be suffering from diarrhea for a few hours.
Some high-fiber foods may not agree with you, so be careful and consume only a small potion first.
If you'd like to try prune juice for instance, drink a small glass first and see how it goes. If you don't see results in 2-3 hrs, and you are eating suggested food for constipation, continue with another small glass.
Now here are the foods you need to stay away from, as these can slow down your stools:
• Processed foods
• Carbonated drinks
• Cookies
• Doritos, pita chips and other chips
• Rice
• White bread
• Peanuts and nuts
• Coffee
• Tea, especially when is brewed really dark
• Alcohol
Also, some people use bulking agents, commonly known as fiber supplements, to treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) with constipation. Some of these fiber supplements include:
• Psyllium (Fiberall, Metamucil, Perdiem, and others)
• Corn fiber
• Wheat bran
• Calcium polycarbophil (Fibercon)
These agents can help you with constipation, but they won't really help you with other Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) symptoms. Keep in mind, that the extra fiber may make belly pain, bloating and discomfort worse.
If you still can't empty your bowels in 5 days or a week, and are feeling lots of pain, don't be shy and make an apt. with your doctor. Ask to be seen as soon as possible and explain how are you are feeling, so they can understand your urgency. If everything is booked that week, ask to be on a waiting list if someone cancels.
We also talked to some of our customers who suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and constipation, to see how they handle their daily life and what little secrets they may have to share with you.
Here are some tips from our customers, which they hope they can work for you too.
 1. Buy a magnetic dry-eraser pen board and put it on your fridge. Make a schedule from Monday to Sunday and under each day, write 2-3 foods that you should eat to help you with your constipation.
They can be snacks, fruit, veggies, etc... Don't forget to update it every week.
The point is to have that board as a friendly reminder. You'll see how helpful it is.
Lindsey
Boston, MA
 2. When going to the bathroom, don't try to push and push for hours. Past 20 minutes should be more than enough. If you push for more than that, it will make your anus extremely sensitive and you'll end up with extreme pain every time you push for the next 2-4 days. It’s better to stop after 10 minutes if you see there is no progress. Come back when you are ready again.
Martin
Miami, FL
 3. I always drink lots of water. Drinking 8 cups of water a day is very healthy and not just for my Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) problems. Water helps loosen bowels and keeps me well hydrated.
Rick
Ontario, Canada
 4. There are a few things I always carry with me when traveling. A bottle of water that I can refill all day long, a ziploc bag with fresh fruit or vegetables and another ziploc bag with dried fruit. These help me regulate my stomach, especially when traveling. For some reason, becoming constipated while traveling is pretty normal even for people who don't suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or any digestive problems.
Chloe
Katherine, Australia
 5. I'm one of those people who does not like the taste of plain water. I used to have trouble drinking a good amount of water daily because of that. A few years back, I found a way to enjoy water and be able to drink it regularly. I cut 1-3 slices of cucumber and add them to my glass of water. It’s very tasty!
I also cut 1 strawberry in little chunks when I want to vary a bit. Sometimes I mix both the strawberry and cucumber for another great flavor. I have also stopped drinking sodas and coffee.

Halloween and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Halloween is right around the corner and if you love to celebrate it don't let the pandemic and your Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) destroy your fun.
While keeping safe, you can enjoy a great Halloween with your spouse at home, making one or all of these 3 treats and watch one of the scary movie suggestions we'll share with you below.
Keep in mind, these recipes will be good for the majority of people who suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Take a very small portion first and see how your body reacts. Even if you still feel good afterwards, don't eat more than the suggested portion to avoid any triggers/flares. You may also want to eat these treats as a periodic snack, throughout the year.
 1. GINGERBREAD CARAMEL CRUNCH POPCORN
This sweet, salty, crunchy snack will be hard not to stop eating! So watch your portions, friend!
• Serving Size Info: Makes about 20 cups
• Serving size: 1/2 cup
• Makes: 40 servings
• Prep Time: 10 minutes
• Cook Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
• Recipe/Photo Credit:  Dédé Wilson
Tumblr media
 INGREDIENTS:
 16 cups (272 g) popped corn
1/2 cup (1 stick; 113 g) unsalted butter, cut into pieces
3/4 cup (160 g) firmly packed light brown sugar
1/4 cup (60 ml) light corn syrup
2 tablespoons rice malt syrup, or an additional 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
2 tablespoons unsulphured molasses
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 generous teaspoon cloves
1/4 generous teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
 PREPARATION:
1. Position two racks in lower and upper levels of oven. Preheat oven to 250°F/121°C. Coat two rimmed half-sheet pans with nonstick spray and set aside.
2. Coat the inside of a very large mixing bowl with nonstick spray and also coat a large silicone spatula. Pour popped corn into the bowl.
3. Place butter, brown sugar, corn syrup, rice malt syrup (if using), molasses, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and salt in a saucepan and stir to combine. Bring to a light boil over medium heat, swirling pan once or twice (but do not stir). Boil for 4 minutes; the mixture should darken and thicken (the bubbles will open more slowly). Remove from heat, add baking soda and vanilla and swirl pan quickly (watch for it bubbling up) to combine then slowly pour over the popped corn, folding as you go with the nonstick spray coated spatula. Keep folding to evenly coat the popped corn. Be patient! It will work.
4. Scrape onto the two pans, dividing evenly, and tamp down into an even layer. Bake for 1 hour, turning the popped corn over with a broad metal spatula about every 15 minutes. This will help the popped corn stay evenly coated with gingerbread caramel. Cool on racks completely then get into airtight bags or containers quickly - to preserve it best but also to keep yourself from eating it all! Just TRY not to eat this stuff; you have been warned.
 TIPS
• If you have an air-popper, use that as the overall fat and calories will be reduced. Or, pop your corn in some lightly flavored oil, such as rice bran.
• After folding the popcorn with the caramel, you dry it out in the oven to help preserve its shiny, crispy coating!
• Make sure that you store it in an airtight container as they caramel coating can easily pick up on humidity.
• Serve popcorn in a Halloween ceramic bowl and decorate with toy black spiders, etc.
 2. FALL APPLE MUFFINS
A simple and delicious recipe to make for breakfast or afternoon tea, but try to eat just one!
• Serving size: 1
• Makes: 12 muffins
• Prep Time: 5 minutes
• Cook Time: 20 minutes
• Recipe/Photo credit: Dédé Wilson
Tumblr media
 INGREDIENTS:
Topping - Optional:
3 tablespoons firmly packed light brown sugar
2 tablespoons low FODMAP gluten-free all-purpose flour, such as Bob’s Red Mill 1 to 1 Gluten Free Baking Flour
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Pinch of salt
 Muffins:
1 cup (240 ml) lactose-free whole milk
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/3 cup (75 ml) neutral flavored vegetable oil, such as rice bran or canola
1/2 cup (107 g) firmly packed light brown sugar
1 large egg, at room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/4 cups (326 g) low FODMAP gluten-free all-purpose flour, such as Bob’s Red Mill 1 to 1 Gluten Free Baking Flour
1 teaspoon baking powder; use gluten-free if following a gluten-free diet
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 Pink Lady or Granny Smith apple cored and diced
 PREPARATION:
1. Position rack in middle of oven. Preheat oven to 350°F/180°C. Coat the insides and top of 12 muffin wells with nonstick spray; set aside.
2. For the Topping: If making, simply stir together all of the Topping ingredients in a small bowl until well combined; set aside. It will look like a dark, cinnamony paste.
3. For the Muffins: Combine the milk and lemon juice in a medium bowl and allow to sit and thicken for 5 minutes (you are making a soured milk, like buttermilk). Whisk in the oil, brown sugar, egg and vanilla until smooth and well mixed.
4. In a separate medium bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder and soda, salt and spices until aerated and combined. Make a well in the center and pour in the wet mixture and stir until a few floury streaks remain, then fold in chopped apple.
5. Divide mixture into prepared pan(s). Scatter topping on top of muffins, if using. Bake for about 15 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick shows a few crumbs clinging (but just a few). Cool on rack for at least 5 minutes, then unmold directly onto rack. Muffins can be served warm or at room temp. Store in airtight container for up to 3 days. After cooling they may also be placed in heavy zip-top bags and frozen for up to a month. They defrost very quickly.
 NOTES:
• If You Can Tolerate Fructans:
If you have passed the fructan wheat challenge, you can use regular all-purpose wheat flour. Use weight amounts for best results with this substitution.
 TIPS:
• Your can freeze these!
• You can take them anywhere easily for a quick snack.
  3. GHOSTLY CAKE / WOLFGANG PUCK'S FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE CAKE
There's no Halloween without Chocolate! This treat will satisfy any chocolate lover for sure!
• Serving size: 1
• Makes: 6 servings
• Prep Time: 15 minutes
• Cook Time: 45 minutes
• Recipe/Photo credit: April @ Girl Gone Gourmet
Tumblr media
  INGREDIENTS
4 ounces unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
8 ounces, bittersweet chocolate, chopped
5 eggs, separated
Pinch of salt
2/3 cup of sugar, divided
Powdered sugar, for dusting the cake (optional)
 INSTRUCTIONS
1. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Butter and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
2. Melt the chocolate and butter in a bowl by microwaving it in 30 seconds intervals. At the end of each 30-second interval, stop to stir. Just be careful not to cook it too long and stir frequently. It usually takes 2-3, 30-second intervals for it to melt.
3. In a large bowl, whisk the egg yolks, the salt and all but 3 tablespoons of the sugar. Stir the melted chocolate into the yolks until combined.
4. There are two critical steps in the recipe. The first critical step is whipping the egg whites to the right consistency. First, beat them on medium speed with an electric mixer in a large bowl until they are stiff enough to hold a soft peak. Then slowly add the 3 tablespoons of sugar and beat them just until they tighten up, but are not dry. If you over beat them, your cake will be too dry. Gently fold the egg whites into the chocolate mixture until combined and then pour all of it into the cake pan.
5. The second critical step is baking the cake. Every oven varies, we recommend baking it for 45 minutes to an hour. Start checking it at 45 minutes and, if necessary, continuing baking it until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.
6. Remove it from the oven and turn it out onto a wire rack to cool. The center of the cake may sink a bit, which is fine. Once cooled, place the serving platter on top of the cake and, holding on to both the dish and the rack flip the cake over. Garnish with powdered sugar before serving.
Now what will go great together with these delicious treats? A scary movie for sure!
Here's a list of our 10 favorite horror movies (in no particular order) that will keep you in suspense. Some may not have any popular artists, yet the acting is great and most importantly, we promise you a very scary night!

Living with Diverticulitis
Diverticulitis can be a very painful and uncomfortable condition, which can lead to complications that require surgery if not controlled or treated on time. People living with this condition need to make sure they eat a healthy diet and maintain a proper healthy lifestyle. For some, it’s easier to adapt than others, but like it or not, you'll be doing yourself a big favor by starting on this new lifestyle change early.
Supplementation may also be required in some cases to allow your digestive system to heal. This will also help reduce the severity of your symptoms. With proper medical care and adherence to dietary suggestions and restrictions, serious complications can be avoided.
For those who don't know what Diverticulosis is, we'll explain right here what you need to be aware of:
Diverticulitis occurs when tiny sacs, known as diverticula, develop in the tissue that lines the bowels. These pockets usually develop in the large intestine, when pressure is built up from food traveling through the digestive system. Sometimes these pockets can also develop in the colon.
As the sacs become inflamed or infected, the condition progresses to diverticulitis.
Did you know that approximately 10% of the global population is affected by diverticulitis? And that it usually happens by the time they reach the age of 50? Studies show that about 50% of people get it by the age of 80. Also if you are obese or over the age of 50, you’re more likely to develop diverticulitis.  Many people who suffer this condition can have it for years without knowing that they have it. It usually isn’t until complications arise that symptoms develop, as there's usually no pain associated or other health problems prior.
Though diverticulitis is quite common, many people have not heard of it. The exact cause of this condition is unknown; however, it is believed that eating a diet that is low in fiber contributes to the development of diverticula. You see, when your stools are hard, they place pressure on the lining of your bowels, which can cause diverticula.  If you are frequently constipated, drink as much natural water as possible every day.
Symptoms of diverticulosis include:
1. Diarrhea
When the diverticula become inflamed, it can lead to changes in your bowel movements, such as diarrhea.
2. Constipation
Just like diverticulitis can cause diarrhea, it can also do the reverse, resulting in constipation. This symptom usually occurs before diarrhea sets in. It’s actually the constipation, which is marked by hard bowels that are difficult to pass, which weaken the walls of your intestines and lead to the development of pouches that become inflamed or infected.
3. Abdominal pain and tenderness
This pain is the result of the inflammation or the infection that has developed in the pouches that are within the walls of your intestines. The inflammation or infection places pressure on your abdomen, which causes pain.
Most patients describe this pain as being moderate to severe.
4. Bloating
Bloating in the belly refers to a sensation that causes you to feel as if your belly is full of fluid. It can be uncomfortable and even make your clothing fit tightly. When the pouches in the intestinal walls become inflamed, it’s not unusual to experience this.
5. Fever
In many cases of diverticulitis, patients develop a high fever, which could reach 100 degrees F or more. Since diverticulitis is often the result of an infection, as any other type of infection that you may develop, your body will try to fight it off by raising your temperature.
6. Gas
Gas and the pains which are associated with are not uncommon for a person to experience.
Gas puts more pressure on the intestinal walls, which are already inflamed.
7. Bloody stools
When fecal matter becomes trapped in the diverticula for a long period of time, it can cause bleeding in the intestines. The blood passes out of the intestines by way of the bowels. You may notice that your stools feature bright red streaks or that they are darker. Sometimes they are almost black in color. Please contact you doctor immediately if you are having bloody stools.
8. Nausea
Many people who develop diverticulitis also experience nausea, or uneasiness in the stomach. Nausea can also be marked by the urge to vomit, and vomiting usually does occur; however, you might also experience nausea without every vomiting.
9. Urination Problems
Issues with your digestive tract affect every other biological system in your body. It’s common to feel an increased urge to urinate frequently throughout the day, and you may also notice a burning sensation when you pee.
10. Loss of appetite
You might start to notice that you have the desire to eat less, or not at all. This may cause you to lose weight too, but this is not a healthy way to lose weight, to say the least.
We hope this article has answered some of your questions. Remember that if symptoms persist, contact your doctor as soon as possible and book an appointment. You are not losing anything by doing so, except a few hours of your day.

Summer Recipes for those with a Digestive Disorder
Who doesn't love summer time? Even now with a pandemic, it’s nice be outdoors, to take walks and enjoy the sun, relax in the porch and if you have a pool at home or live by a lake or beach, it’s the perfect time to enjoy a great splash in the water.
Summer days are long and are great for doing the things we love to do. It’s also a great time to try new and fun activities and even learn new recipes. Here we'll share with you 3 delicious and easy recipes to enjoy this season.
 1. Low FODMAP Summer Beef Salad with Mustard Vinaigrette - Great for a picnic at the park!
Makes: 4 servings
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
 Ingredients for Beef Salad
• 600g of beef rump steak
• 1 tbsp neutral oil (rice bran, canola, sunflower)
• Season with salt & pepper
• 180g green beans
• 6 cups lettuce (butter, iceberg, red coral)
• 1 red bell pepper (deseeded & cut into strips)
• 16 cherry tomatoes
• 10 g (1/4 cup) green onions/scallions (green tips only, finely sliced)
 Ingredients for the Mustard Vinaigrette
• 1 1/2 tbsp dijon mustard
• 2 tbsp white vinegar
• 60 ml (1/4 cup) olive oil
• 1/4 tsp black pepper
• 1/4 tsp white sugar
 Preparation:
 1. Cut the red bell peppers into strips and grill in the oven at 440ºF until the skins start to blacken. Remove from oven and allow to cool before peeling the outer blistered skin off (this is the part that has gone black). While the red bell peppers cooks you can do steps 2, 3 & 4.
2. Prepare the green beans by removing the ends and cutting into bite sized pieces. Wash and shred the lettuce before dividing between the plates. Halve the cherry tomatoes and finely slice the green onions/scallions (green tips only). Put a small saucepan of water on to boil.
3. Season the rump steak by rubbing each side in the neutral oil and salt and pepper. Heat a large fry pan over medium-high heat and cook the steak for 3-4 minutes per side for medium rare, or until cooked to your liking. Allow to rest for five minutes before thinly slicing.
4. While the steak cooks, you can blanch the green beans in boiling water for two minutes (they should go bright green and tender). Drain and rinse under cold water, then drain again.
5. To make the mustard vinaigrette, mix the Dijon mustard, white vinegar, olive oil, sugar and black pepper together until smooth. If the vinaigrette is too sour, try adding a couple of pinches of sugar until it is sweet enough.
6. Assemble the salad and serve the sliced rump steak on top, before drizzling in mustard vinaigrette.

  2. Healthier Strawberry Lemonade - Perfect for when friends come over to visit!
 Makes: 2 servings
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
 Ingredients:
• 1.5 cup lemon tea *
• 3/4 cup frozen strawberries
• 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
• 1 tbsp white sugar or maple syrup
• 1/2 cup ice cubes optional
• Plus extra strawberries and/or lemon slices for garnish
 Preparation:
1. Brew your tea strongly. Allow to cool off before using (you may want to make your tea the night before). If you do not have a lemon tea you can use water instead of tea and add 1 extra tablespoon of lemon juice for more flavor.
2. Add the tea, strawberries, lemon juice and sugar to a blender. As an option you can add ice cubes to the blender as well. Blend well. Taste and add more tea/strawberries/lemon juice/sugar as desired.
3. Pour into glasses. You can also add additional ice cubes, if preferred and/or more strawberries and/or lemon slices for garnish on the glass.
NOTE: Not all teas are low FODMAP. Check ingredients list for high FODMAP or untested ingredients. Rooibos tea is low FODMAP.  Also, if you know you are sensitive to seeds, perhaps squeeze the strawberries for the flavor without the seeds.
 3. Low FODMAP Summer Garden Veggie Soup - Great for summer breeze nights!
 Makes: 8 servings
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
 Ingredients:
•1/4 cup (60 ml) olive oil
• 2 whole garlic cloves, peeled
• 1 cup (48 g) finely sliced leeks, green parts only
• 1/4 cup (16 g) finely chopped scallions, green parts only
• 8 cups (2 L) Low FODMAP Vegetable Broth, homemade or purchased
• 1 pound (455g) red potatoes, scrubbed and cut into large bite-sized pieces
• 2 medium carrots, peeled and cut into bite-sized pieces on the diagonal
• 12 ounces (340g) plum tomatoes, cored and chopped
• 6 ounces (170g) green beans, ends trimmed, cut into thirds
• 1 medium zucchini, ends trimmed away, cut into quarters lengthwise, then cut into bit-sized chunks
• 1 cup (164g) yellow corn kernels, fresh off the cob
• 1/2 large fennel bulb, stalks and fronds discarded, cut into 1/2-inch (12 mm) wide slices
• 2 ounces (55g) kale, tough stems removed, torn into large bite-sized pieces
• 3 ounce (85g) piece of rind of Parmesan cheese (omit if vegan)
• Kosher salt
• Freshly ground black pepper
 Preparation:
1. Heat oil in a 5-quart Dutch oven or similar size stockpot over low-medium heat. Add garlic cloves and sauté for a minute or two until garlic is softened, but not browned. Remove all of the pieces of garlic; this is very important to keep the recipe low FODMAP. Once all of the garlic pieces are removed add leek and scallion greens and sauté for about 3 minutes or until softened but do not let them brown.
2. Add broth, potatoes and carrots and bring to a simmer. Cover and simmer for about 10 -15 minutes or until potatoes and carrots are tender when pierced with a knife. Add tomatoes, beans, zucchini, corn, fennel, kale and cheese rind and simmer for about 20 to 25 minutes or until vegetables are cooked but still retain some vibrancy of color. Season to taste with salt and pepper, if desired. Soup is ready to serve.
Note: Soup can be refrigerated in airtight containers for up to 4 days or frozen for 1 month.   Also, if you know you are sensitive to seeds, be sure to core the tomatoes and perhaps consider leaving the corn kernels out.
We hope you give these recipes a try as we think they'll be very tasty and fun to prepare!
Please keep in mind that not all ingredients will sit well with everyone. For instance, if you know lemons or garlic are not good for you, please do not use them on your recipe.
