Here’s a fun side-by-side comparison of my original July 1998 drawing on the left next to my brand new redone drawing on the right from this week. Both drawn freehand, separated by a lot of “life” along the way. Ha! Prints of the new one are now in my Etsy shop 😊 #thetrumanshow #trumanburbank #art #artist #jimcarrey #fbf #worldofpencils #artwork #art #arts_gallery #growth #draw #drawing #freehand #instaart #inspiration #jimcarreyishere #pencil #20yearslater #gallery #portrait #staedtler #comedy #pencildrawing #sketch #fanart #etsy #artistic #jjdart https://www.instagram.com/p/B45NGEYnins/?igshid=15862ev29a83o

A True Man
Privacy is a virtue that we take advantage of when the world is too much. A safe haven of sorts. The promise of singleness. For example, I thoroughly revel in being alone in my car driving and singing as loudly as I please. I like being in my room, my space, where no one else goes. Sometimes I escape from a bad day by eating chips in bed and watching New Girl. Everyone has their own safe space they go to to be alone. It's difficult to think about not having privacy. Not identity privacy, like companies that market your information to sell, but the normal kind. There is a character that I'm going to talk about who has dealt with the issue of privacy all his life and his name is Truman Burbank. The movie I'll be discussing is called The Truman Show. It's a great movie I recently watched that is filled with issues of privacy, technology, self-identity, and reality vs. fantasy.
Truman Burbank, a man of average height and build, looks and seems like a regular guy. Just a middle-aged dude with a decent desk job, a nice- looking wife, and a house with a picket fence around the corner in a tiny town called Seahaven. But there is more to Truman's life than he is aware of. He's the star of his own life and reality television show, broadcast to people all over the world. A show that is live 24/7.
Millions of micro-sized cameras follow Truman everywhere to capture his "normal" life.  "While the world he inhabits is, in some respects, counterfeit, there's nothing fake about Truman himself -- no scripts, no cue cards. It isn't always Shakespeare, but it;s genuine. It's a life." The creator of The Truman Show opens the movie with this line. A continuous show starring Truman Burbank, against his will. Yes, he is against his will and has been subjected to this fake reality since birth. Truman was adopted by this production company through an unwanted pregnancy. To the obsessed fans who watch, the reality show is an escape from their reality. However, Truman's trapped in his reality. Literally.
All of the citizens of Seahaven are actors. They too are fake. Truman's "father" died in a boating accident when he and Truman went out into the ocean when he was a teenager. He then developed a fear of water which prevented him from leaving the island, which kept the show functioning for so long because Truman didn't travel anywhere his whole life.
There was a time in Truman's life where the enslavement of his being has been close to being revealed. When Truman was in college he fell in love with an actress, Sylvia. Since his life is planned out for him, he was supposed to be interested in Meryl. Sylvia ended up telling him that everyone is pretending and that everybody knows what he does. She was taken out of Truman's world in fear of him finding out the truth. In actuality, she was fired as an actress on the show and was thrown out onto the streets of Hollywood Blvd. Seahaven is just a town-in-a-dome in California.  In present day Truman begins to notice little things about his daily life that seems to focus on him.
Then, Truman runs into his dead "father" who snuck back on set, probably to get on TV again. Truman was extremely confused. I mean who wouldn't be??? Your dead dad you saw drown is alive? Meryl, his wife (the realist of arranged marriages as it gets) tried to ease Truman's confusion but he became even more suspicious. He decides to travel to Fuji to be with Sylvia and literally can't leave the island. A travel agent says no planes are departing.
Then, he has a breakdown and wants to try and leave by car and takes Meryl. He looks insane but what would you do if you felt you had no control over your life and you never left where you're from and find out you actually can't? It's a lot.
Reminder: Be like the Truman, be spontaneous.
In the end, Truman tricks the director and producers into thinking he was sleeping but really he escaped by boat to get the heck out of Safehaven undetected. Truman’s determination wins over his fear of water. The producers try to make Truman turn back around by calculating a storm through their technology inside the dome. Truman survives and makes it to the edge of the dome. The creator speaks to Truman like “God” from above. His voice is sent out through speakers. He tells Truman that he is safe with him and what they created. The outside world is dangerous and cruel. To which Truman basically says “F off, dude.” and walks out a door into the real world. And everyone glued to their TVs all over the world witnessed a screen go blank with no more live footage.
The Truman Show was no more. After watching this movie every time I was alone I sang 'I always feel like... somebody's watchin' me' to myself.
There were scenes where Truman is looking into his bathroom mirror. He talks to himself. He goofs off and pretends he is reahcing the summit on top of a mountain. He is his truest self, in his own "privacy". But behind the mirror, front facing cameras sat. When he is looking in the mirror, it shows us that we are completely ourselves in front of them. The reflection empowers us to not give a f*ck. We are our truest selves. In front of a mirror you don't regret saying anything or doing anything because nobody will see it. Sometimes that's the greatest side of a person, fearlessness.
If people were more like that we wouldn't be hiding so much of ourselves from the world.
Truman was right. His life was building toward something: the truth. And now he's a true man. A true man who can live his own life without cameras and can experience the true meaning of privacy.  SIDE NOTE: I wish to make a point and suggest a Jim Carrey related movie for you to watch. If you're like me and adore him and his craft then you might have heard of a documentary called Jim & Andy on Netflix released in November of 2017. It's about Jim Carrey completely and fully taking on the role of comedian Andy Kaufman in the 90s for the filming of The Man on the Moon (1999). When I mean completely, Andy’s spirit took over Jim's body. Jim Carrey was always and I mean always in character, on and off screen. It's weird. It's fascinating. I was... inspired. He talk a little about The Truman Show and how he as a person was going through an identity crisis like Truman Burbank.
Thanks for reading my first movie review. I've always been a huge fan of Jim Carrey and his comedies are comfortingly priceless, however, his dramatic films are even better. He was typecast as comedic characters before this role, but typecast no longer after becoming Truman Burbank.
Anyways, in case I don't see ya - good good afternoon, good evening, and goodnight.
