You clocked it with your opinion on Taemin's album. I was honestly excited to see what he would come up with now that he was "free" only for him to bring... the exact same thing as always. I listened to all his albums and I truly like a bunch of his songs but his alleged versatility is nowhere to be found. Maybe he's still too influenced by the sound SM crafted for him but the thing that bothers me the most about his discography is the fact every song he releases could be part of literally any of his albums and it would make no difference because his sound is so monolithic and static. Nothing has evolved in these ten years of career. I started losing faith when it was revealed that the TT would be called Sexy In The Air. I kinda cringed not only because of the title itself but reading the fans' reactions. I know that acting like your idol just invented the wheel is standard behavior but Taemin stans are constantly running with the narrative that he's pushing the envelope and testing the limits when that stopped being true years ago. I mean, my man already released a song called Sexuality back in 2016, and maybe it was bold back then, but releasing Sexy in the Air at his old age in 2024 is just corny. The concept pictures are all over the place and the MV is terrible. I would love to see him evolve because I do believe his very talented and capable but he seems so set in his ways

Yeah, very true about his discography! I felt like there was some progress or shift before he enlisted, yet he came back buff and wanting to prove he still "got" it, hence the return to the sound that made him popular imo.

Taemin is pretty overrated, and I mean no disrespect to his talent and legacy. His dancing skills aren't overrated, he's an excellent dancer, yet people don't like to acknowledge that other idols are on par with him; when he isn't lipsyncing, his stage presence is good, but not amazing imo; and his vocals are distinct and solid from a technical pov, but not versatile and even annoying and unpleasant to listen to sometimes. Taemin is good, but I haven't seen much progress from him lately and his artistic vision has been a miss for me. I also think it's shameful that he's a veteran idol and yet still lipsyncs music show performance, and others probably. And I find that his stage presence is good but not mindblowing. I noticed that when the choreo isn't that interesting his stage presence doesn't stand out. And I already commented on his vocals which seem to be unfairly praised, but we know kpop fans eat up the bare minimum and all SM vocals.

Anyway, I think kpop stans tend to overhype all the older idols that "paved the way" for BTS and ignore BTS and other younger idols. SM idols are also seen as gods... Taemin may be one of the "idol of the idols" but I'd say he's shown where he lacks and doesn't have to be praised as if he's untouchable. He is a great artist, no doubt, but I agree with everything you said.

literally!! hoshi (and seventeen) have some insane level of talent like at least on the same level its just that bts are more famous. which is due to a combination of factors and one of them is luck, or maybe the combination of factors has been a lucky combination. either way, bts are amazing, but they are not gods holy shit. they have strengths and weaknesses like everyone else. like their discography and lyricism for example is amazing, but as an army with jungkook solo stan tendencies I have often felt when watching live performances especially vocal-heavy ones that next to jungkook, they are seriously lacking. and sure biased opinion, and they have amaziiiiing performances as well, they truly do. its just, sometimes I cant listen to a complete live performance and the reason I am a jungkook solo stan a little bit is because hes. on another level and low-key the group dragged him down at those times, when hes doing those angelic harmonies and adlibs to some weak rap or live singing . like he does most of the legwork vocally in that group, from the very beginning, lets just admit it.

EDIT I watched a little bit of the episode and it kind of feels staged to me. like it feels like it was scripted based on what army wants to hear, which makes sense cause they are the target audience. its like their trying to paint this narrative, "bts paved the way", because its a profitable and good PR. more than that, bts can still profit of their image as "underdogs who came and took over the whole kpop industry" and army literally sees every achievement, to this day, as some kind of act of revenge? I dont know if revenge is the right word but it can be petty. that said I think hoshi may really feel nervous or whatever due to yoongi being his senior both in age and years since debut, and to pay respect to seniors is important in korean culture from what ive heard. but it did feel a bit unnatural because like, like you said this is not some teenage trainee or something. I can imagine you being there before bts even debuted, but then when bts become popular theyre for some reason legends? and like idk pave the way to american interviews because thats apparently the ideal. its weird. its a PR stunt. what army forgets is paying respect to kpop (and its influences). like, they want so badly for bts to be bigger and more special and better and its honestly quite disrespectful? anyways im tired I dont know if I wrote anything sensible. also jungkook alcoholism era arffaqnfn

i always say taemin is my bias (hes adorable AND funny like... king stop my expectations are too high-) but i think im truly ot5 because all of them are so important to me. they were the first kpop group i ever listened to forever ago (sherlock (clue + note) is a legend and i love her so much), and i think dropping off shortly after getting into them (which would have been around 2015 because it was the time view came out) and then picking them a little over a year ago was genuinely like... something that really helped me out of a shitty place + hurt because i had missed the news about jonghyun entirely. but even then, i think its made me appreciate him and everything he's done so, so much. i won't get sappy but i truly love jonghyun so much and i'm glad he's no longer hurting. it'll always piss me off when people reduce him down to his death and nothing else because he was such a good person.

moving on from that before i get too emotional... i genuinely just love shinee a lot. i watched one of the shinee world concerts (IV i think?) earlier this year and its amazing how talented they were and still are. shinee truly helped pave the way and inspired so many idols and i adore them. its also fun to just watch them interact, tbh. i don't genuinely ship anyone because i find that weird, but minkey as a (platonic) pair are my faves lmao they always bicker like an old married couple but you can tell that they do love each other and are genuinely close friends.

and jinki!!! onew my beloved!!! i love him so much. he has such a warm presence and GOD his vocals... i die every time... coincidentally love phobia just came up on my playlist lmao but still!! highly recommend listening to DICE if u haven't!! the entire album itself is good but the title track is soo good <3 i always feel like i forget he's the leader of shinee because they're all so close-knit, it feels like they're all on completely equal footing even if jinki is the one leading them.

i didnt rly get into my love for taemin but genuinely i adore him. he's so, so talented both vocally and dance-wise, i love to see the difference between his stage persona (typically his solo persona lmao taemin and his slutty slutty music... <3) when he's really just this very sweet catholic man who apparently only really interacts with his group mates and a few others outside of that. he's so funny and i honestly admire every live he did where he spoke english and messed up and accepted his mistakes? like. learning a language is hard enough, especially one as fucking weird as english, but he just seems to eager to try speaking english and accepts his mistakes. i think he definitely has a very good support network both in the people helping him learn english (job-wise) and in having someone like key there to correct him (and maybe rib him a little bit--but it's all out of love). also i still think its really funny he broke into keys place to leave him a birthday cake and then proceeded to steal one of his jackets. stole my heart at the same time smh

ok but seriously i think it’s gotta be that from the very start, they were true to themselves. they poured their lives and stories into their music, and wrote some pretty challenging and unique songs especially at that time in the kpop realm. i grew up on kpop and i remember for the longest time, songs were almost 99.9% about about love and break ups. there really weren’t any idol group songs that talked about life struggles and dream chasing and the pressures of life and society, let alone any idol hip hop songs really (khiphop was always more of an underground music genre in korea. they would talk about some pretty hard hitting topics in their songs, but i’m only referring to idol groups for this comparison). bts wrote love and even bubble gum pop songs too, i’m not saying they didn’t, but they didn’t focus on that. they focused on the growing pains of life and no idol group has really done that. their message grew over time, and that also is rare, the fact that they had an ever evolving and growing message that they carried with them. a message that everyone and anyone could relate to, even those who aren’t korean or don’t speak the language. their message truly transcends the language barrier and speaks to everyone. 

their style is also very unique. most kpop songs follow certain formulas, which is why a lot of songs end up sounding similar, but bts always changes up their vibe and style every single time. rather than plugging and chugging and factory-producing their songs, they drew a lot of inspiration from western music and then freakin wrote their own songs, which again guys, is a HUGE deal since most groups just perform whatever their companies make them. seriously bless bang pd for giving the boys SO much freedom, like i don’t think people realize just how rare that is? in an entertainment business where everything needs to be absolutely perfect and calculated, to give free reign like that is completely unheard of. so the guys worked hard, continued to write music, and didn’t change their ways, and yet their popularity stayed pretty stagnant their first 3 years, i still remember it. but they still kept with it, they stayed true to themselves, and finally their message got through (may 2015, never forget).

i think it also helps that kpop was (and still is!) on the rise in the west as well. with korean dramas and beauty becoming more popular in western countries, kpop was also gaining popularity. psy also helped to pave the way, truly, because oppa gangnam style was such a universal hit and that truly helped kpop groups get their foot in the door. so bts’ raw and real lyrics plus their genuineness plus the growing hallyu wave and bts’ love for interacting personally with fans through social media was what really helped them sky rocket in popularity, in my humble opinion.

nowadays, many idols are trying harder to connect with their fans through social media and other means, but i’m telling you it’s just different with bts. and i’m confident when i say that bts started that trend. call me delusional but i think they don’t see us as just fans, i think they see us as people, as their friends, their support team that they want to love on as well. i mean, yoongi openly talked to us about his depression and mental health in his tweets and in interviews. the boys don’t really cover up their bare faces during behind the scenes videos because i don’t think they care that much (like “my face is my face, so what?”). they post all the time in the fan cafe and on twitter just randomly, asking how we’re doing, updating us with funny and cute pictures or with their late night deep thoughts and worries, and not just when they win on music shows or have big announcements. they allow us to see them for who they are. even though we may not know them 100%, who they show themselves to be on TV shows and in their own personal vlogs and when they don’t even know the camera is rolling are all the same; they don’t change and just act the same.

i also think overall, we just got lucky, as odd as that may sound. ive heard that a lot of groups actually don’t get along that great, even though they may look like it. most groups grow close obviously because they spend so much time performing and practicing together, but as soon as some groups get to a certain point in their popularity they’ll move out of their dorms into their own places. there’s nothing wrong with that, but i genuinely believe the guys are a family and actually enjoy being together all the time. i think we got lucky that they all mesh so well, that they’re all so down to earth, come from humble beginnings, and just want to chase their dreams together. none of them are spoiled or attention whores or cut throat people who just want to do better than their own members or other groups. they all keep their heads down, work on whatever goals they personally have, and together, as a group, make strides towards their bigger group goals. they draw inspiration from one another, struggle with each other, and grow together. im not saying other groups suck, i’m just saying that we got very very lucky that our boys got along well, that they really clicked and now are inseparable. they’re just 7 guys who love music and want to share that with the world. i remember when i first started stanning them in the dark & wild era, i watched all their stuff and was like “huh, this group is so weird. they’re talented and funny but they just don’t seem like they’re very greedy for fame and popularity.” and i still stand by that thought today. i don’t think fame and money was ever their goal. i’m sure they desired that part of it all to some extent, but i think they have a lot to express, want to relate to other people who are getting through life just like they are, and they just want to make a positive dent in the world through their music. and that is also very rare.

WHEW ok you anons seriously love killing me with these kinds of questions (seriously i have like a 4 pg answer to “if you got the chance, what would you say to each member” sitting in my drafts lord help me now) but tl;dr, bts is a group of 7 humble, hardworking, genuine, and unique guys who bring their own personal works and talents to the table, work hard together, stay true to themselves and real with us, and aim to make a positive difference with their messages. because this was their goal and origin from the beginning, i believe that’s why they’ve become the legends and wonderful people that they are today.

MoRe Kpop opinions

GWSN is one of the best idol groups to debut this year but they were so under hyped in comparison to (g)-idle’s. And I think “puzzle moon” was better than “latata.” I do really love that latata was self written and produced though. I have a lot of respect for that.

SHINee continues to prove themselves as the king of kpop.

Many people don’t want to get into new groups because it takes a lot of time; for me, I didn’t want to get into Day6 at all. Also lot of content for smaller groups is not subbed, so it’s difficult.

BTS has paved the way for many Kpop groups to grow bigger in the western world such as NCT. And a lot of armys are not open to this idea; continue to support them! They’re doing great things and yes SM is the worst, but NCT is headed for bigger and better things.

I understand the industry is difficult but where is f(x)?? SM brought back SNSD so where are my other legends? They deserve and we deserve a comeback

I love k bands but I understand why they are slept on. Sometimes people really enjoy the dance factor of kpop, but bands don’t have that. However, if you do get the chance to check them out I think they’re so worth it.

Visuals/the better looking idols will always be more stanned than other members w in a group; sometimes people just like looking at pretty idols and it makes them overlook talent and skill to love someone else more. Again, your faves will continue to be slept on.

As much as I’d like to see Cube go down for everything they’ve done, I’m so worried about my other groups from Cube. They have all worked hard.

Regular was such a strong comeback for NCT 127, but the album fell short for me. I’m not sure why.

EXO’s tempo comeback took my entire body and left. The acapella bridge is another amazing aspect of their vocal skills I didn’t know I needed.

I hope the east light wins their case… even then nothing will make up for the abuse they went through.

i read your ask convos w/ another anon and i just wanted to share my opinion. i'm a fan of mamy groups and have experienced being in a lot of fandoms. i'm a fan of bts, and no offense, (most of) the fandom is hella toxic. they bash other groups and mentions bts as being better and yadayada. they would always say "no bts is not like that...", "i will not allow bts to...", "this idol went near my bias she is a..." but this could also be because most of the army are extremely young (1/3)

(10ish and up, yes they have a lot of fans in this age group) and most of them are new to the kpop fandom. it is also their first time liking certain groups so they are TOO proud of the boys' accomplishments and still unfamiliar with older groups, they can't accept that there are other groups who are better or could be better. THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME THAT THIS HAPPENED. this happened to other fandoms as well. it's just that bts has gained more recognition (2/3)and it also put their fans on the spotlight which made others notice this behavior. similarly, when exo was just gaining popularity, exo-l is also a toxic fandom due to the same reason. the toxicness is slowly disappearing due to fans maturing as well. so as time passes by, the childish armys will also mature.
