Better jobs for Steve than being a cop: teacher, counselor, bartender, florist, librarian assistant, garden section associate, dog walker (dog groomer canon?), grocery store manager, food pantry helper, seasonal worker as a Santa’s elf….

Seeing mangahood enjoyers who swear up and down that the fma manga/Brotherhood is "anti-military"/"anti-imperialist" is like seeing someone repeatedly argue that your bog standard copaganda procedural is "anti-cop"/"acab".

like. As someone who unfortunately has a cop for a father let me fucking tell you in my experience: no matter what a cop is a fucking cop. Above all else. Because that’s what they value. More than their family or friends or anything else in their fucking lives. The sense of superiority and power does not go away. They do terrible, unjustifiable, evil things to people while they’re ‘working’ and then go home and do terrible, unjustifiable, evil things to their families and everyone else in their lives. And that just goes on and on. However presentable they may look like from the outside is a fucking front. Don’t let copaganda tell you otherwise. Be aware of it in the media you enjoy, think critically.

I keep thinking abt Ted Kord and his loony toons relationship with cops, SPECIFICALLY his theoretical relationship with Jim Gordon. Imagine saying something sexist to your daughter and the next morning all of the furniture in your office is upside down. Imagine you made a tasteless joke about affirmative action and now there are 60 small Bluetooth speakers (all playing ska) hidden around your home. Ik I've briefly speculated about Ted & Jim meeting before (glue trap, shaved moustache, etc) but like. Does Babs think about that too. Does she ever have a bad argument and think "can't let Ted find out about this or he'll start paying kids on the street to make (doctored) viral videos of my dad peeing his pants a little bit at press conferences. Again."

what I love about the danyok plotline is just how. utterly merciless it is in regards to dan being a police officer. they could have gone the route of Dan being the Good Cop- the exception to the rule, the person they can work with to fix the system. and until the literal finale it seems like that's what they're setting him up for!
like, he's a young queer police officer who's grown disillusioned with the government, who spends his evenings breaking into billionaire's homes to do political graffiti criticizing their unethical behavior. He joins our criminal leftist gang because he earnestly, genuinely wants to do good as a police officer! he gets shot protecting his boyfriend!
and it just makes it so fucking brutal when he still turns against the gang in the end. when his boss straight up tells dan that they knew what he was doing the entire time. that he can use his graffiti as an outlet, that he can post it online, but the moment he threatens to do something that will truly, genuinely threaten the status quo, they'll destroy him. and dan goes along with it. justifies to himself that the society they're in is incapable of change so the most he can do is sell out the gang so they're thrown in jail before they're killed. because end of the day, he's still a cop. and there's no such thing as a good cop.
and like...he's finally able to quit at the end, but god. what a cost. being a police officer ruined his life. it ruined sean's life when he murdered his dad. the entire gang almost get assassinated because he sold them out. yok got shot. they could have gone the easy route with his character and they chose to confront the inherent rot built into the police as an institution instead

Anyways, I was so brave today. I only cried once and it was at the very end of the ordeal only after returning to the first office and finally solving the freaking problem.

I have a question, if Carlos isn't a cop, what else could he do on the show, or how could things get better? As a black woman who has had awful experiences with police, I hear what you saying, but I don't know what they could do with Carlos's character apart from him talking and showing how the police can be better.
[in reply to my post here]
The realistic answer for a network procedural is simply that, you're right, they would never have this show without a series regular as a cop or law enforcement “good guy” of some kind, which is unfortunate... but at the very least he could acknowledge the harm that his own department does instead of just placing blame on a different sector of law enforcement?
But if I'm talking a dream scenario in which the writers weren't afraid to lean progressive with it's content? They could have Carlos, after resigning from the APD, either work for or even found an advocacy/nonproft group within the community that works directly with the 9-1-1 dispatch to respond to calls that ordinarily would go to the police but should actually be seen to by mental health professionals, substance abuse specialists, etc. There are many of these groups out there in different areas, but they're generally underfunded and don't get enough press/support.
I'm not an expert on these programs by any means, but I've read many different articles talking about how much they improve the communities they're in and can help prevent more violence by not involving the police. This article I found through a super quick google search (meaning it's probably a little outdated) gives a pretty brief overview of how some of these programs work better than I could explain it:
"In Eugene, Oregon, advocates are praising their Crisis Response Helping Out On The Streets (CAHOOTS) Program, which has been in place for over three decades. CAHOOTS provides residents with access to free, trained, civilian first responders for incidents specifically involving mental health episodes, substance abuse, and individuals experiencing homelessness.
Researchers have found that the CAHOOTS responders only need police intervention in just 2 percent of their calls, saving the city of Eugene an estimated $8.5 million annually in public safety costs, and $14 million in ambulance and emergency response costs, according to Everytown."
I think having Carlos do this on 911LS would be 1). a GREAT way of spreading more awareness that programs like this exist and need more funding and also 2). would be kinda groundbreaking? I don't think I've heard of any procedural show that has shown how those places run/interact with other first responders/etc. (granted... 911LS is the only procedural I watch so maybe there's one out there doing it 😂).

For WIP Wednesday, I have finished this WIP! And made this lazy shitty gif edit because I needed to exorcise the image from my brain. Anyway, this has been a wild ride, I got a lot of mileage out of my chat app CSS, and I have finally made good on one of the first notes I put in my outline: "Let! Morgana! Text!"

I mean Carlos’ “real work” is police work sooo let’s not give him too much credit here. He might not be playing games in his downtime like the 126 but he’s a patrol officer so he’s spending a lot of time just sitting in a car and stopping people for random useless violations let’s be real
He is working as in he is out in the field doing tasks that are related to his profession and his position and he’s not sitting in a recliner chair playing FIFA and getting paid for it. If we are factoring in the societal value of his job and situating this in the context of the real world and not a tv show in which we suspend disbelief for the sake of enjoying a work of fiction, then yeah lol. The 126 getting paid to play Catan has about 87 billion times more value than 90% of what Carlos does in a day. Say that.
