When I was keeping spiders a few years ago I offered my rabid a crumb of cucumber just to see what would happen, honestly didn’t expect her to take a sip from it considering she had access to fresh water 24/7 haha

well now i have to ask: what kind of silk stickers do spiders accessorize with?

Mostly they like star, spiral and zigzag shapes, like you'd find in a web! Some also wear things that drape over their legs. Most can't see well enough to appreciate them themselves, so they'll have jumping spiders look the accessories over for them. The jumping spiders will also dye the silk colors the web-spinners can't see, since jumpers have receptors for red, blue, green, and ultraviolet.

The web-spinning true spiders like to do this because they feel incomplete and exposed when they have to leave their webs (which function not only as a home, but also a big ear for them). This lets them feel like they've brought a little of it with them.

The spiders are very proud of anything they can do with their silk, and are always trying to make the stickers and draperies catch on with insects (and in fact, since most can't see the stickers themselves, it's also largely an attempt to impress the insects). Sadly, that has yet to happen.

Welcome home little one!

Meet Cheddar! Cheddar is a Stegodyphus tibialis, aka a yellow ladybird spider, they're just a spiderling so we can't sex them yet! They were an early birthday present for Star from a friend and they're SMALL!!! We had a fancy house set up for them and then it turned out they were too tiny so we had to do a super simple deli cup setup for them instead.

So excited to watch them grow up!
