Taking Back -Troy Calypso-
masterlist | request
Prompt: Hello! Can I request a Troy Calypso scenario where he and the reader broke up and after a few months he comes back to them and tries to apologize and make up with them?
Pairing: Troy Calypso / Reader
Summary:
Word Count: 1.5K
The last words you heard from Troy still linger in your mind. Whenever you see another couple, your mind goes back to him.
Back to the way he held you, the resting smile on his face when you wake up in the morning.
Everything about your relationship was perfect.
You and his sister got along wonderfully, supported him with his echo-streaming hobby, even helped him design some of the future COV weapons and outfits.
The relationship slowly began to falter once the aforementioned COV began.
Troy spent a majority of his time with Tyreen. Gathering material to make COV related items, Finding additional locations for their hideouts and of course recruiting their new 'family members'.
In the beginning you didn't mind at all. Knowing how important the tasks, you would simply wish him a good day before beginning your own tasks for that day.
As the weeks went on however, the smile you put on had begun to fade, along with your warm words.
It didn't take long for the soon-to-be god king to notice the not-so-subtle changes in your demeanor.
"So, What's gotten into you?" Troy asked you one night while getting ready for bed
Your silence filled the room as anticipation and worry fill Troy.
"I've just been missing you is all. You've spent so much of your time preparing this, I haven't seen you as much"
For most couples, that sentence would bring sadness and love at the same time. Other partners would apologize for making you feel that way then go to bed and cuddle.
But not Troy. His brows furrow as a small 'tisk' leaves his mouth.
"So? I told you this would happen. It's not my fault you've become clingy."
For the first time in your prolonged relationship, you were speechless. Never have you heard him talk to or about you like that before.
"Don't be mad at me when you'd rather spend your time chasing some pipe dream then spending it on something that actually matters."
Before you could stop yourself, the words left you.
You let out a gasp as your hands flew to cover your mouth before spewing out a series of apologies, only to be stopped by Troy's hand shooting up.
"What we are planing with the Great Vault, is bigger than you could ever imagine. Tyreen and I will become gods. The greatest, most powerful being in the entire universe. Nothing will be able to stop us. And you're complaining about me not spending enough time with you?"
Whatever regrets you may have had about your previous word choices flew out the window the more he spoke.
"So you'd rather me sit alone all day so you can go chase fairy tail fantasy? Then not complain about it? Well, don't worry Troy. You can spend all the time you want on it."
All the regret you previously had flew out the window with each word that he spoke.
"Well, don't worry. You can dedicate all your time to the COV without an interruption from me."
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
Troy didn't try to stop you that day. Let you walk out of the compound and out of his life.
It didn't take long for you to settle down somewhere else. Picking one of the old bandit camps the Calypso twins already raided.
While things were quieter now than it was a few days ago, you learned to make due.
You took what you learned from Troy to craft your own crude and somewhat functional weapon to defend yourself.
Fending off Skags and Spider-ants while also hunting dinner for yourself in the process.
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
One clear, hot day, You begin to hear the sound of a car engine off in the distance. Being away from most people, cars normally don't drive around here.
Grabbing your makeshift gun, you stealthily peak out the window to see a cloud of dust hurling towards you.
it wasn't long after you begin to make out the shape of an outrunner with the undoubtedly familiar pink and blue color scheme.
Once you knew who the invaders were, you feared the worst.
You knew how to deal with bandits. However the COV were a different beast. Now that Troy and his sister had control over them, you didn't know what they were capable of.
Deciding not to run from the past, you turn to face the intruders head on. Walking out and standing on your porch to face the ever growing closer cloud of dust.
It didn't take long for the car to come to a complete stop, To your surprise what emerged from the vehicle was a pair of COV with psychos crawling all over, instead it was once single person.
Troy.
To say you were hesitant would be an understatement. You remember how to acted months ago when you left, you couldn't imagine how he'd be now with all his followers referring to him as the 'God King'.
Though as he steps out of the runner, he seems to have a look of shyness and regret.
Something you haven't seen in a very long time.
"HI, Y/N" His shaky voice matched his apprentice. "Can we talk?"
You take a moment to get a good look at the man standing in front of you.
Since exiting the vehicle, he has yet to move towards you, hasn't even look at you in the eyes. Something that would be unthinkable when you were together.
The sight was adorable and terrifying at the same time.
Before long you nodded before motioning towards the door.
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
"So, How have thing been for you here?"
Troy broke the silence that previously filled the room.
"Fine. I've made due with the limited resources."
You didn't mean to sound hostile. However as the memories of your last interaction come flooding back, you can't hold the spiteful tone back.
Trying to avoid the awkward interaction Troy glares around the small room until he lands on your tiny weapon stash.
"Is that one of mine?" His eyes widen as his gaze shifts to your weapon.
"No. I made it myself." You thought he would be disappointed or angry at you, instead he seemed to look even prouder.
"But it looks almost the same. Did you remember how to made it from me?"
Without noticing, the small question turned into an hour long conversation. You explained to him how you made the weapons and he'd give you pointer or critiques.
Before long the once bright sky slowly faded into an orange hue, signaling that night would soon come. Sadly, this also would bring Troy's departure.
"Don't worry, I'll be back again. Promise."
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
To you're surprise it did in fact keep his promise. Coming back at least twice a week, if not more.
This continued on for a few months till you noticed he hasn't come around in 2 weeks.
You begin to believe he left you for good this time. That was until you notice a cloud of dust barreling towards your home, and your mind replays the memory of that first day.
"Took you long enough to show your face again." You shouted one Troy got out of the vehicle.
"Yeah well, I wanted to get everything ready."
Before you could question his meaning he flung open the passenger door and motioned for you to get in.
You contemplated turning him down, but eventually gave into your curious nature.
The drive itself was bad, the two of you talked while the taller male pointed out all the changed that have been made over the last few months.
When you arrived at the COV compound. Troy carefully grabbed your hand and ushered you throughout the unfamiliar walls till you reached a closed door.
"Well go on, Open it." Even without being with him for years, his excited was obvious.
The room was something you weren't expecting. At first glance it seemed like his bedroom. All his stuff where you would expect it, however at a closer look you noticed some of the stuff you left.
"I know it doesn't make up for how i treated you. But i think it's a start." His voice slowly came up behind you before you felt hands on your waist and a chin on your shoulder
"You were right. Even though the COV is important to me, so are you. And I took have made an effort to show it once in a while. When you left i was so mad I hated you and never wanted to see you again. Then I started to get lonely- at night and whenever Ty and I took a day off. You made everything better. I hope this can be a new start to us?"
You took a step forward, away from the grip around you and survey the room. Taking the time to look at the all the details. The memories come flooding back, all the joy and excitement you shared.
"Of course, Under one condition. If I say i need you, you better drop everything for me."

My interpretations for the visuals of epic:
In "Luck Runs Out" when Odysseus and Eurylochus are speaking in private, there is a sun, visible between them in the background. This composition is repeated in both the second half of "Mutiny" and "Thunder Bringer". The sun's position in the sky progresses every scene towards a sunset until it's fully absent during the "we'll die" "i know" scene.
Every time the Cyclops is alluded to, the focus character has an eye hidden. Does not have to be Odysseus
In "The Underworld" every person not on the ship is turned away and their face can't be seen. Aswell Polities is not talking to Odysseus, but the infant.
Also in "The Underworld", the bit right before Odysseus says goodbye to his mom, he is on the edge of the ship, trying to get a glimpse of her, and the brief instrumental is Eurylochus pulling him back. The following Chorus he turns to Eurylochus and is talking to him directly and then the crew, as if seeking out comfort.
This one is the most important to me okay. In "Suffering", each line he proceeds to undress a little (taking off his shoes when he says he's too shy, and his shirt(?) when he says can't you let me stay dry) and when he asks her to come up onto the ship she takes his hand and does, successfully letting her believe he's been fooled, and when he says the final line, they're standing on the ship together and he stabs her similarily to how Circe attempted in "There Are Other Ways"
In "Suffering" and "Different Beast", the daughter is played by a real younger siren and while Odysseus sings, Siren!Penelope is looking at her and the other caught sirens. The second chorus, she breaks away from Odysseus to go to her sisters and it's holding the face of the youngest one, that she and the others swallow their pride to beg for their lives.
In "There Are Other Ways" Circe gives Odysseus a flower that is in some way in his hair. This remains until "Different Beast" where during the line where he instructs his men to cut off their tail, he rips it out.
In "Scylla" the crew's guard is mostly down after she says Hello, all of the crew is looking to Odysseus, waiting for him to speak. After he tells them to row for their lives, it takes them a second to because of the shock
At the start of "Mutiny", the remaining crew does not seem to believe Eurylochus, slowly accepting and realizing by the time he's giving examples as their gaze turns to Odysseus instead.
Every time the Cyclops is alluded to, the focus character has an eye hidden.
At the very beginning of "Thunder Bringer", during the instrumental, the shot is actually of Ithaca where Penelope removes a bracelet/necklace/ribbon and sets it down, but an Eagle comes and swipes it. We then follow the flying eagle and back to the boat. During Penelope's verse, the eagle drops the item to Odysseus. Ideally this is incorporated into his design afterwards as a symbol of devotion and possibly to then end where on their reunion he returns it.

Why Apollo actually didn't have beef with Odysseus (spoiler for the Wisdom Saga)
Heads up, fellas: The rambling below contains spoiler for Epic the Wisdom Saga!
As we may know, in God Games, Athena needed to convince half of the Olympian council to approve Odysseus' release from Calypso's island. Apollo is the first god Athena encountered and the easiest for her to convince.
Now, why is that? Why does Apollo's beef with Odysseus seem way too easy to rebuke? He barely has any connection with the Sirens aside from the catchy songs, so why did he use them to "accuse" Odysseus (heavy on the quote-unquote because he barely even tried) and not the sacking of Troy, the murder of Astyanax, or the violation of the cows?
Here's my theory: Apollo has no real grudges against Odysseus. Apollo has every reason to be mad with the mentioned instances, but he is also the god of reason and rationality and knows there is no point in being angry.
First, as far as I know, Odysseus had not directly offended Apollo in the Trojan War or during his journey home. Apollo won't just harm anyone, he'd only take retribution against those who disrespected him greatly.
Second, the City of Troy had always been destined to fall so if it wasn't for Odysseus' wooden horse, someone else would have caused its demise. Apollo can't fault Odysseus for being part of the city's inevitable destiny.
Third, Apollo should be mad at Odysseus for killing an infant because he's the protector of the young, right? Well, in The Horse and The Infant, it was Zeus who told Odysseus that Astyanax was prophesied to take revenge on the Greek kings when he grew up, and he had to kill the infant to prevent that. Apollo is not one to go against his father's decree, so he wouldn't be mad at Odysseus for following suit.
(And if you look from a mythological standpoint, if Astyanax actually grew up to cause destruction to the Trojan War survivors, imagine how many sons and daughters of the Greek kings would suffer because the prophesied one was spared.)
Finally, why was he not mad with the cow thing??? Simple!
The cows were not even Apollo's, but Helios'. Apollo already gave his cows to Hermes in exchange for the lyre. So when Odysseus' crew killed the cows, they offended Helios, not Apollo. Of course, you could say Apollo should be mad on Helios' behalf, but that'll take us to point 2...
The crew killed the cows while Odysseus begged them to not. Odysseus didn't commit the crime or enable it, so he was in the clear. And lastly...
Odysseus' crew were already punished by death and Odysseus was left drifting in the sea and stuck on Calypso's island for seven years to the point of driven insane, so whatever "association" he could possibly have with the violation of the cows should be paid enough.
All that aside, Apollo has little to no beef with Odysseus and only makes up a flimsy "reason" to be mad out of obligation. He didn't care about bringing justice to Athena's favorite mortal, he probably only wanted to have fun in the family drama because hey, how often do you get to see your oldest sister asking for a favor from your King-god father?

Fic idea - Astyanax in Ithaca
for times when my English will become acceptable because writing this in Polish feels not right sample of the story under the summary c:
Of course, I was thinking about Penelope's reaction to Odysseus showing up with a new kid (10/11 years old, give or take, Astyanax) at their doors.
I imagined it as the Game of Thrones scene when Ned Stark comes home and shows Catelyn a baby who, he claims, is his bastard. If I were her, I would lose my mind.
But I think that Odysseus explained himself chaotically, yet truly and Penelope didn't fight with the idea of raising the little prince as their own.
But Telemachus? Well, that's a hell of a different story.
He spent his childhood without his father, missing his presence and hoping to meet him one day. He lived in his shadow, as the problematic son of the absent king that everyone wanted to kill, or as a painful reminder to his mother that Odysseus wasn't around anymore and that she needed to be there for the two of them.
Now his dad is back but with a new child.
A new child who knows his father so well. Odysseus was his only parent for ten years (if we forget about 600 uncles, but they died after like 3 years? if I get it right?) and they just get themselves on an impossible level.
Odysseus knows Astyanax's nightmares (they share them).
Astyanax knows his father's past and doesn't need to ask many questions, and Telemachus does. He hates to do it because he sees Odysseus's pain, he sees Astyanax's reproachful look, like he is going to fight Telemachus if he doesn't leave their father, and-
and he sees the sad, concerned eyes of his mom.
So he doesn't ask much about those 20 years. And somehow it's even worse.
Because Telemachus doesn't know Odysseus. Because it feels weird and not home, like they are forced to be close, but they are not. Because he knew his father from songs, stories and legends, and this man is not who he heard of and he doesn't know how can he fix it.
Telemachus doesn't like to think about it but feels like he gives up on Odysseus. He spent the last 20 years of his life trying to reach that man and- Telemachus is tired.
Besides, Odysseus has another son anyway, right?
The prince of Troy, cursed boy, son of Hector, Astyanax, who also turned out to be a pain in the ass.
He knows that he can't blame the kid for his existence or even for the fact that Odysseus took him to their home.
For that Odysseus often takes Astyanax for horse rides to show him the island. The thing that Telemachus did alone.
For that, Odysseus teaches the boy how to use a sword and they laugh a lot during that. The thing that Telemachus did with strangers, got dozens of bruises, always trying to do everything he could to impress the person that wasn't there.
He doesn't blame Astyanax.
He just can't stand him.
But the boy seems to love the idea of going after him whenever Odysseus manages to pull him off for a moment. It's okay when Astyanax watches him during the trainings with eyes shining with excitement. However, it's bad when Astyanax starts to talk.
Father said I'm getting better at parrying-
When I was with father on Calypso's island-
Father does this completely differently-
Telemachus is a patient man. He waited for his father for 20 years. But sometimes he asks himself if Astyanax knows that all this talking about Odysseus, the man he missed but can't actually get to know, is such a trigger for him.
Maybe Astyanax teases him to show how much more of a son Odysseus is?
With every day Telemachus is more and more irritated. He does his best to hide it, but he can't ignore this fire burning him from the inside.
The reason for this fragile peace collapse is, relatively, very stupid.
Telemachus was tired after all day when he met Odysseus.
"The situation in the city is now calmed down,’ he informed his father, combing through his wind-tangled hair."
Odysseus nodded and put a hand on his shoulder.
"Thank you, Telemachus. Well done."
Telemachus froze, not knowing what to say. He couldn't even move. Finally, he nodded, wincing slightly at the awkwardness of his every interaction with his father.
"Of course, father."
Odysseus seemed equally perplexed. However, the whole situation changed when Astyanax appeared in the courtyard where they stood.
Or, he ran into it, almost toppling over, just to get to Odysseus faster and embrace him around the waist.
"Dad, you will never believe what I found with mother in the garden!"
Telemachus watched with unhealthy interest as his father's face lit up with a smile as he listened to Astyanax's excited chatter.
A sudden anger, though senseless and petty, flared his veins. He had to avert his gaze and drive it into the ground so that no one could see his anger. His jaw was clenched tightly.
Twenty years of life based on a vague memory. An entire journey to find his father. His faith, his efforts and his devotion. All this to not be able to have one real conversation with his father. All this to watch both his parents melt down over his new, little brother. All this to stand by and watch his dreams fade away.
He no longer watched.
He walked away before he could do something stupid. Something that would distance him even further from his father.
He holed up in one of the cool and dark corridors of their palace. He concentrated on his breathing and massaged his temples.
He was an adult and knew how to deal with his feelings. Not that anyone had ever taught him that.
"Telemachus, what's wrong? You don't even know what we found in the garden, you went too fast!"
He didn't know shit about how to deal with his feelings.
"Could you, for five minutes, let me live as I lived before you came along? Five minutes without your constant footsteps and shouting behind my back. Five minutes of peace and quiet! That's all I'm asking for!"
But Astyanax took a few steps back as if frightened by Telemachus' sudden outburst. A grimace twisted his face and he squinted as if Telemachus was an extremely difficult puzzle for his quick mind.
"Why are you so angry? I don't understand."
"At this point? I'm not sure anymore. All I know is that I wasn't this angry even once before you dragged yourself home with father and decided to act as if it had all been yours forever."
Telemachus had to calm down. For bloody hell, he had just shouted at the eleven-year-old as if he was guilty of anything.
‘Are you angry about your father bringing me with him?’
Damn it.
It wasn't true. To be fair, he did not want Astyanax to die that night in Troy or be lost in the depths of the burning city.
Still, did he want him here? He let his thoughts wander before he could finally admit it to himself.
Astyanax, essentially, was not the problem. Everything else was. Telemachus was as well.
"No. There are many other things I'm angry about, but not this."
He sat down on the floor and leaned against the cool wall. He hid his face in his hands and let the anger leave him with his next breaths.
"Forgive my shouting. You got me at the wrong time, brother."
And he heard the boy slowly slide down the wall and sit down a few steps away from him.
"You should be grateful, you know?" suddenly said Astyanax. "He travelled all the world to see you and Mom."
You won't scream, Telemachus said to himself. He took a breath.
"Yeah, he didn't really know me, so. I don't know if that counts."
"That's even better. I mean, he loved you anyway. All this time, he was thinking about you"
This logic was wrong, but Telemachus doesn't find enough strength to fight over it.
They stayed silent for a few minutes.
"He didn't want me, you know? He just didn't want me dead and I reminded him of you. He was also scared of what I would become if he just left me alone. And you are so awful but he wanted you from the beginning and he loves you and he was so proud and-" Astyanax put his arms around his knees, his voice breaking as he spoke his next words: "You're a terrible idiot, you know. But he still wants you."
Telemachus needed a few seconds to see that every now and then, Astyanax would rub his wet eyes with his little fists.
He wasn't ready for this, even after months of training he wouldn't be ready. He stays silent for a moment. Slowly, he puts his arms over the crying mess and draws him to his side.
"And you think that father carried you all over the world because he doesn't like you?"
"Because he's kind and he would be ashamed to tell uncle Polites what he did."
"As far I know he wasn't so nice all this time, right? But he never turned his back on you. If you don't trust me, trust that. Odysseus came with you to Ithaca, because he wants you."
Astyanax did not reply but rested his head on his side. Telemachus let him.
Later that night, Telemachus carried a tired Astyanax straight to his parents' bedroom and knocked. When confused Odysseus finally opened it, Telemachus threw the sleepy child at him without hesitation.
"Hug your bloody kid."
And he walked away. This was his moment to avoid uncomfortable questions.
Let me know what do you think. And yes, Telemachus and Odysseus have a proper conversation about being father and son, but later.
BTW sorry for all the errors, I'm so sleepy right now I barely see my screen

It just occurred to me that Odysseus is going to end up on Ogygia the next time we see him. Which is so funny to me because like
Imagine you've gone through all this shit since leaving Troy some two years ago. It has been hell and you have been losing crewmates here, there and everywhere. But you survive, even if it takes some sacrifices. Only for Zeus to get involved because, while staging a mutiny, your best friend tries to slaughter sacred cattle. So the god of thunder forces you to pick between your life (along with the remaining hope of ever making it home to your wife) or that of your crew (who have all completely given up hope of returning home).
You elect yourself as the survivor, despite how much it pains you. Zeus' thunder strikes the boat, obliterating it and sending you all to the water. Ha, you think as you begin drowning, you should have known. This was probably a ruse to rub it in your face that you fatally betrayed your crew one last time. Water and the bodies of your friends surround you. As it goes black, you think of Penelope and Telemachus, so apologetic that you won't be able to return home to them after all this effort expended as a way of striving towards that goal.
Except... except you don't die? You instead wake up on the sands of a beach, waves gently lapping at you while a woman hovers over you. She explains she is Calypso and nobody is able to come or go from her hidden island. She turns out to not be the worst company around, she's just a bit too forward.
In moments alone, you sit on the shore while contemplating the possibility of spending the rest of your mortal life here with only one other person. You would love to be on the coast of Ithaca instead, your wife and son hopefully beside you. Yet all you can think in these moments is:
I did not condemn my crew to death just to be hit on by another titan's daughter. Hera, please stop testing my undying faithfulness already.

Before he and Odysseus make up, Astyanax must undergo some character development, so here it is
Astyanax closed his eyes to sleep at Calypso's island, far from the greek man and the goddess, and when he opened again, he found himself at an unknown place.
It was clearly divine intervention, even if he didn't know which god was playing with him, caution was more than necessary. His weapon was next to him in the dry soil and dust that covered everything that his eyes could see.
Ruins were everywhere, but that didn't stopped him from imagining what was there before. In the wholes of the ruin his mind was able to rebuild an image of a past era of prosperity. Giant destroyed walls talked about years of siege and the doors, crooked and rotten in their place, of what was once the city, spoke about days of glory long gone.
Then there it was, a pile of a structure which shape can't be recalled, but the dirt and the moss were no obstacle for Astyanax's mind.
"This is Troy." He said, to the ghosts of those who died there.
"This is where Troy were once", a thundering voice corrected him, condescending. "I want to show you something, come."
Disobedience and a snarky reply crossed briefly by Astyanax's mind, but in the last second he kept those to himself, opting for following the Thunder Bringer. Broken stairs and rooms which once had colour and life greeted him as he ascended, testimonies of a time that was no longer his.
"Why did you bring me here?" He asked.
"I have a mission for you."
"I'm not interested in being your champion, Zeus."
Then the thunder God used the dusty cloud of his sandals to take form and looked him in the eye. His expression was of amusement.
"No one is talking of champions here, boy. I have a mission for you, that's all."
"Still not interested."
"But you are so filled with rage! Wouldn't you like a chance to unwind?"
"I'll pass, thanks for the offer."
A long, patronizing laugh came from Zeus.
"First, take a look at what I have to show, and then decide."
The room, looted and ruined, changed to depict a scene from the past. Sounds of slaughter came from the balcony, and there, in the corner, there was a cradle.
An echo of man entered the room, and something tightened in Astyanax's chest when he recognized the man as none other than Odysseus, a young version of him, old, yes, but younger, and maybe tired, but Astyanax could still see some hope in his eyes.
The scene developed in front of him as Odysseus had told him, which only reassure him that the man had been telling him the truth that dreadful night in the beach.
Astyanax could only watch, as a young Odysseus disobeyed Zeus, faked a baby Astyanax's death, and took the child version of him to safety.
""Come on, little ghost," the young Odysseus mumbled softly, even covered in blood, "where are the clothes for your diapers stored? We must go."
Astyanax blinked away some tears while the illusion faded away.
"I would like you to kill him." Said the king of gods. "That's my mission for you."
"Why."
"As you have seen, he disobeyed me."
"Well, tough, I said no."
"This is your chance to avenge your home, your father! Troy's legacy lives runs through your veins..."
"Is this what the Trojan Legacy is??!?!?" Astyanax exclaimed with fury. "A meaningless death after another! Sonless fathers killing fatherless sons!! Bloodshed that never dries! Ruthlessness, and the greediness of the gods turning everything they touch into ruins."
"Careful, boy, shut your mouth before is too late."
"Or what? You will kill me? You have wanted me death since I was a baby! And now you want me to kill the only man I have called father and for what? Because you are bored??"
"Hector, crown prince of Troy, was your father..."
"And where is he? WHERE IS HE? HE'S DEAD BECAUSE OF YOU AND EVERY SINGLE GOD WHO LIVES IN THAT FREAKING MOUNTAIN OF YOURS."
Astyanax coughed after yelling so much, he even turned red, so lost in his self righteous fury that he forgot to breath for a second.
"Are you done?"
"Not even close." Astyanax muttered with a dangerous edge in his voice.
"You will kill Odysseus of Ithaca because, I, Zeus, God of Thunder, has told you so."
"Eat me, asshole."
Then Astyanax turned around and started his journey downstairs, to see if the greek army left something valuable behind. Something useful. At least he hoped not everything was at the bottom of the sea with the Ithacan fleet.
Zeus didn't stop pestering him, the dusty cloud following Astyanax.
"Where are you going? I did not finish saying my piece!"
"But I did, now fuck off, I need to get back to Calypso's."
"To kill Odysseus, I assume."
"Your assumption is wrong." The characteristic hint of sass was back in the boy's voice, as he took a long wooden stick from the ground, maybe it could be useful...
"I am Zeus, God of Thunder..."
"And I'm Scamandrius of Troy, son of Hector and Andramoche, Ghost of Troy, the Infant from that night, I'm the 601st man, I'm the One you wasn't expecting...and last but not least, I'm Astyanax the cynic, son of Odysseus...and I'm going to let him go and that's final."
"Why? It's an order, kill him!"
"No. He is not my enemy. You are."
"Are you threatening me, boy?"
"No, I'm stating facts. He's not my enemy and even if I kill him, that won't bring Troy back."
"Merciness is not a valuable skill."
"And that's the difference between men and gods. The need for mercy." Luckily for Astyanax, the curtains were still in place, so he took them down.
"That's naïve."
"Is it? It's because of an act of mercy that I am alive. Mercy is a weakness, yes, but is a strength too. Civilizations raise and fall because of it"
"He is still a threat."
"To whom? He tried to kill me because you ordered it, he is a mere puppet in your scheme. There's nothing personal in that. He's dangerous to you, and you want to toy with him by making me kill him. My answer is still no, by the way."
"And you are letting him go, out of mercy."
"And out of love." Astyanax looked at him with something that was tinted with sadness. "You know, I feel sorry for you, so many sons and daughters and none of them has called you dad...and it shows."
"You know nothing about me, mortal."
"Neither do you about me, puny god. As I was saying, I choose to let him go, because I'm also Astyanax the merciful, but I'm no idiot. He is a nobody, but you, in the other hand, have much to explain. What would you tell the other gods? Would you return home and tell them that you challenged a child? That you were so scared that you just couldn't stand the thought of me being alive? Go, go and tell them who defeated you, tell them about me, tell them that a boy with no beard beat you in your game. Tell them that your ego blinded you and a boy outsmarted you."
"Do you think is wise to talk like that to a god?"
"No, but is it fair to me to chase me like this? I was a baby, not a threat, back in the Trojan war, yet you wanted me dead. Troy was a beautiful place, without the gods' interferance, yet today is all dust and ashes. And now, you just ordered my death, again, because that's what all the 'kill Odysseus' nonsense is, you just want him to kill me. Is this what you want your legacy to be? A capricius whimsical god with no sense of morality! I just want to live in peace, is that too much to ask? Of course you choose not to speak. If your choice is to tell the other gods...Tell them where to find me. Tell them I'll be in Ithaca, and so will my father."

What do you like about the Odyssey? Besides some entertaining episodes (e.g. Circe or Calypso), I've never really been able to get into the Odyssey as a whole (I find the first 5 books especially dull). The Iliad really speaks to me more.
It's hard to really pinpoint what I like most about it but I love to talk about the Odyssey so I hope you like long posts hahaha
The first five books act as the exposition. When the Iliad ends, there's a general understanding that most of the surviving characters made it home. Menelaus and Helen have reunited, the catalyst for the Trojan War has been resolved. Agamemnon traversed the sea and made it back, and although he was killed by his wife Clytemnestra, there is no question about where he is; unlike Odysseus.
Telemachus has spent his entire youth without a father. When he finally decides to set out from Ithaca to find any leads on where Odysseus is, he is confronted with the fact that most everyone else has been accounted for. He sees Menelaus and Helen, the order of their kingdom, the comfort they have in each other and the bonds they have restored. Telemachus has known nothing but uncertainty, while his mother is forced to weave lies and deceptions to keep the suitors that plague their home at bay. The first five books really show how important one man can be when he is utterly lost, and what it would mean for everyone who loves him should he be found. These books also show the close interest that Athena, as patron of Odysseus, takes in his family. She steps into the chaos of Ithaca and gives Telemachus the inspiration to embark on his own journey, chasing the ghost of his still-living father.
When we finally reach Odysseus, he is not the same man that those who knew him in Troy described. They are the closest Telemachus can come to knowing what came of his father, but even they are separated by nearly a decade and the breadth of the sea. Penelope hasn't laid eyes on her husband in twenty years, there is no overestimating what that can do to a person's memory. Odysseus's first action is to cry. When finally Calypso is forced to allow Odysseus to leave, by order of Hermes, he makes his own raft and leaves at the first possible moment. He is fighting against the will of Poseidon, against the wrath he incurred, all alone. He has lost every single one of his men, every single person who could ever vouch for his identity, in a world where no one could recognize him, is gone. Despite this, he is still fighting to get back to Ithaca.
Odysseus is so utterly human in the text. When he is hosted by Alcinous, Odysseus asks the singer there to recount the story of the Trojan Horse. It's like landing at the doorstep of a stranger who graciously allows you to stay and immediately asking his DJ to play *your own* greatest hits - which in turn only upsets him. This also sets up the dramatic reveal of his identity (I like to imagine him looking around like, you guys remember this one? Yeah that's Me, I pinkie promise. Please give me 4000 drachmae and your best oarsmen (: ).
He recounts the story of how he got so utterly lost on the way back and one thing the Odyssey will tell you, to your face over and over again, is that Odysseus is a big time liar. But for some reason, his tale is so compelling it's hard to remind yourself of that when hearing it for the first time. Some points are so beyond baffling (like striking Polyphemus in the singular eye the poor sod has, and then once to the safety of his boat (which is on open water, the domain of said cyclops's father) loudly announcing his full gods-given name and mailing address, just in case anyone missed who it was) that it's like, yeah that was probably exactly what he did. This is the section of the story where we see Odysseus as he sees himself. This is his own reflection of the actions he made and the troubles that befell him because of it.
Odysseus is such a complex character that one of the epithets he is given is "polytropos", the many-faced or many-sided. Odysseus and his relationship to his own identity, which he can shed and don at any point that's convenient for him, is one of the main reasons I am obsessed with his story. This, and the exploration in an ancient text about what a close relationship with a deity, is something I am constantly thinking about.

Some Warrior!Penelope ideas
Okay so just quick let me say, I don’t really like to swap the gods out just because then it affects the whole Trojan War?? But ignoring that, I wanna include the gods who would be in this au’s version of God Games plus some other things? (With Ares as her mentor btw)
The gods I think would appear would be: Dionysus, Artemis, Aphrodite, Athena, Zeus, then Hera. And in that order.
Dionysus: He wasn’t paying attention. He’ll just half ass it, so he probably just brings up how she couldn’t save Melantho from the cyclops. (Bonus: Melantho was one of Penelope’s servants in the Odyssey and she takes the role of Polites, no I don’t care that the popular switcheroo is Circe)
Artemis: Artemis would liken the sacrifice of Iphigenia (or I guess it’s Orestes in this au) to the killing of Andromache’s son. I’m not sure exactly, but yeah, just really really fickle Artemis.
Aphrodite: Probably the same reason, but in my headcanon, one, Penelope’s mom is a Naiad so she can’t die(?) and two, I don’t really think Icarius (her dad) and Penelope had a great relationship, so I always imagine Penelope was cared for by Leda. So she’d probably mention something about Leda I guess idk.
Athena: She would argue that, because she stole the Palladium from Troy (with god knows who, maybe Clytemnestra idk), she deserves whatever punishment the gods have given her.
Zeus: She’s not fuckable enough no I’m just kidding— (I actually don’t know so help)
Hera: No. that’s the answer, no. Until she gets to beat up Ares haha then it leaves on a cliffhanger lmao.
Bonus, for Thunder Bringer, instead of Hera sending down a lightning bolt to smite the crew, she inflicts them with madness? I’m not too sure how that would go, but like I just imagine that they kind of just destroyed their ship because they were all mad. (Madness Bringer)
Also, just for some general other information:
Ctimene = Eurylochus
Melantho = Polites.
Antinous = Calypso
Calypso = Antinous
All of Penelope’s encounters with monsters and gods are the same. Except, Amphitrite is the one angry with Penelope (the unserious reason is because Poseidon is too lazy to go deal with her so Amphitrite deals with Penelope instead + Polyphemus was her fav step kid lmao). And Antinous is swapped with Calypso. I would’ve kept Calypso on Ogygia but then the suitors of Odysseus felt weird. Like I just can’t imagine Antinous leading a bunch of other men to marry another man. So that’s mostly just cultural/historical reasons I guess, but if not for that, I probably wouldn’t have swapped them.
#epic the musical#warrior!penelope#penelope#also designing penelope is still a burden#if I don’t have a penelope design by the Ithaca sagas release then just know I’ve failed myself and EPIC the musical community#ehhh still in a wip

you know who would be cool to encounter in hades 2?
heres a list:
penelope: i mean, i have to know what happened between her and ody, PLS, it would be cool if it was a eurydice/ orpheus type situation where meli has to figure out what the hell EXACTLY happened ( im just clinging onto my hc that ody didnt willingly sleep with either circe or calypso but thought he cheated bcs he felt like he did when he didnt )
telemachus: does he hate his father? does he still love his father even if begrudgingly? I NEED TO KNOW, also he and icarus team up and slowing down kronos' legions
paris of troy: idk it'd be funny if melinoe and paris have friend- hate relationship bcs he killed achilles but they bond over losing their siblings, also i need to see him trying to find hector again, i imagine they temporarily reunited in elysium but they got separated, he fights his way back to elysium and is currently there trying to find him
hector: bonds with meli over losing siblings and acts kinda like patroclus, hes just there and u can reunite him with paris, hes also looking for him bcs he isnt in elysium anymore, it became too dangerous and when you reunite them, hector is just scolding him for going here in a brotherly way while paris is sobbing and is so happy he found him
patroclus: i need to see him fighting again, like he has the sandals on, his spear is poised and ready, he looks like hes gonna go through hell and back AGAIN and when he meets mel, he goes cold but when she reveals herself as zag's sister, he notices the eyes and while he keeps his guard up, he doesn't attack and acts like in hades I and gives the same stuff ( also would be cool if he had bottles of ambrosia or nectar on his sprite as a sort of callback to zag gifting everyone )

Been thinking about Troy DeLeon lately.
Imagining what a young teenager has to do on a dead planet.
Did he build his arm there? Did he have a different prosthetic? Did he have one at all?
What did he do for fun? We know he tinkers, and we can assume he listened to echonet streams.
Did he enjoy reading? Watching TV? Was he a good shot? What's his favorite food?
Why Calypso? Was it Leda's last name or a stage name he took on because he wanted to be someone else, someone new?
How much did he suffer when building his platform? How many sleepless nights dealing with chronic pain, hunger, and exhaustion? What was it like to be a teenager who went from a dead planet to a hostile one?
How much of Troy Calypso is a trauma response, how much of it was ego, how much of it was a kid screaming out to be fucking loved for once in his miserable life?
We know so little about him, about the person behind the persona, and it's a shame. We only know the monster other people turned him into. We only know the choices he made to survive, and then the choices he made to feel wanted for once. I wonder what he could have been, had his circumstances been slightly different.
I wonder who Troy DeLeon was.

So. I have the stupidest theory.
In "Not Sorry for Loving You" Calypso says that during her time on the island she had no other friends than "the sky and sun".
So I really like to take one word out of context and make something with it SO what if she meant Apollo here? Stay with me because it will make sense why he might be pissed at Odysseus, ok? You see, Hector was very much Apollo's favorite so by Epic standards I think we can say he was his patron god. Plus we know he openly participated in the war and fought on the side of Troy, and he was also the god of prophecy, I don't believe he didn't know how it all ended. Now imagine that Apollo had to watch as his favorite man died and then the only thing left after him - his son, was thrown by Athena's student from the city walls. We know Athena, she didn't miss the opportunity to proudly remind her brother of this, for the gods it was just a game as long as "their man" wasn't involved.
But yes, I think Apollo may have a real dislike for Odysseus and if he had the chance, he convinced Calypso that it was the fulfillment of her dreams for bravely enduring her exile. Apollo knew that Odysseus would manage to get off that island but he wanted him to feel at least a little bit of the pain that Hector's family, his subjects and his beloved wife felt. What golden god himself felt. In addition, Calypso casually tells Odysseus that "someone" came for him. Like??? Shouldn't a god visiting the island because of a mortal be more surprising to her? She says it as if there was nothing unusual about it. Maybe because one had already visited her once, 7 years ago?

if you are a Greek Epics Fan and a Greek Myths Retellings Fan I highly recommend reading classical plays by writers like Sophocles and Aeschylus and Euripides, who wrote a lot of dramas imagining events in the lives of the Iliad heroes and their families during and after the war, because it REALLY puts it into perspective just how long-standing a literary tradition it is to re-imagine these stories through the lens of contemporary values and politics.
It also puts it into perspective just how long-standing the arguments are that I see on tumblr every day.
Was Helen kidnapped by Paris, or did she go willingly, and even if so, did she fall for him naturally or was she cursed by Aphrodite? Did Odysseus cheat on his wife with Circe and Calypso, or was he trapped and coerced by these goddesses more powerful than him the same way the war-captive women of the Greeks were to them? Was Agamemnon a tragic hero or a callous villain? Was Clytemnestra justified or monstrous? Was Achilles a tragic hero or a bloodthirsty asshole? Was Odysseus a clever and pragmatic general trying to end a war he never wanted, or a cruel and petty dickwad abusing his power over conquered Troy?
It depends on who’s telling the story and what their feelings were about war, and Sparta, and foreigners, and women, and the gods, and honor, and massacring your enemies. And they have been disagreeing really intensely about it for a good 2500 years.
#tagamemnon#The Iliad#The Odyssey#that’s why I don’t get too upset about retellings or reimaginings that change aspects of the story a lot or favor one character over anothe#as long as they’re doing something DELIBERATE and INTERESTING with it
