I adore each of these books! Most of them are for middle grade or YA audiences, but those are the audiences I teach and my kids ask me for book recommendations.

Seriously though, please read Project Hail Mary, it's one of my top five books of all time now and I need more people to read it so that I can obsess over it with them.

Ok so, I really enjoyed the Super Mario bros movie. It was cute and really funny. Like, I went to a late screening cuz it was the only subtitled one available and, while the theater wasn't packed, the people there laughed out loud, cheered and not a single one of them moved when the credits rolled to see the post credit scene (like it was fucking infinity war).

Anyway, I really liked it. Chris pratt's Mario wasn't as bad as people said it would. He sounded better than in the trailers tho. And Charles martinet was there!!

The relationship between the brothers was ADORABLE. Baby brother Luigi and affectionate big bro mario was not something I knew I needed this badly.

AND HE CALLS HIM LU!!!!!

I just wish we could have gotten more of Luigi. I love him so much.

Honestly, since most kids movies nowadays are doing the villain redemption arc, I thought that maybe there would be a plot line involving Luigi and bowser bonding during his imprisonment and have bowser be redeemed by the end. But no. I'm a bit sad, ngl, but I like the more classic ish villain approach they took with bowser. A funny bad guy you love to see get punched in the face.

Overall a really fun and sweet kids movie drenched in nostalgia. And short enough that I would totes watch it again.

Also, peach was a total badass but like, in a non cringey way, and I need her backstory in a sequel. But they find more about her cuz Luigi gets into trouble and they gotta rescue him.

What if: Paper Mario... but with Eggman. :D :D :D

I promise it's not as dumb as it sounds... okay maybe it is. But hear me out, I didn't bash non-matching LEGO bricks together mindlessly, there's some comprehensive logic behind it. :<

A while back, during the weekly groaning about Eggman being undermined and treated like shit, I pointed out that when you think about it, he would actually be a very serious problem if he were inserted into other works unrelated to Sonic. I said this mostly out of humor, but it's a what-if that I've thought about more seriously from time to time, including very recently, where I wondered out loud if Eggman would be more respected in-media and out if he were from literally any other franchise. Because as much as I hate to say it, it does feel that way sometimes...

Meanwhile, as you've no doubt gained from my recent posting, I've been more Paper Mario-pilled than ever before, due to how much the TTYD remake gives me passion during a time where I've been sorely needing it, as well as just remembering how much I love TTYD and the original N64 game in general. This happiness inspires me to do something with it out of celebration, so I think to myself "Hey, all my works so far have been strictly Sonic, but I'm currently having a down period with the series due to my ferocious apathy towards most of the current stuff, so how about I expand my horizon and experiment with something that doesn't have that confounded hedgehog in it for the time being? Maybe having something else would also keep me rejuvenated with Stellar, since I could bounce between different projects! But what can I come up with for Paper Chris Pratt?"

Then I think back to the first point, and… yeah. Does what it says on the tin, doesn't it. In an effort to make it sound less Now That's What I Call Mid-00's Fanfiction.Net Vol. 1, think of it like the anti-Storybook: instead of Sonic being catapulted into an unfamiliar world, and having to help out with what's going on… Eggman gets catapulted into an unfamiliar world, takes advantage of the fact that Sonic isn't there to stop him like the opportunistic bastard he is, and the (Paper) Mario universe is forced to deal with a threat that they have no context for.

Yes, I know it's very fanfic-y, but at this point, between this and Sonudis, I think my entire selling point(?) might be taking the most fanfic ideas you can think of (short of killing off canon characters or dumping them in a high school AU, because not even I would do that), and playing them as authentically and respectfully to the source material and official characterizations as possible. What kind of trouble would Eggman be able to cause in a world with no Sonic or Chaos Emeralds around? What scheme would he come up with? What would this very different cast of characters make of him, and vice versa? Is this just an excuse to write for Vivian to cope with the fact that she'll probably once again not appear in later games? (The answer is yes.)

If I decide to actually create this Frankenstein abomination of an idea, it probably won't be uploaded on this site since I'm not sure how many Mario fans I have in the audience so to speak. Then again... @beevean seems to have carved a place for herself in the Castlevania fic community on here, so maybe I should?

(Also, this would NOT lead into a full-on Mario and Sonic crossover, or some convoluted cinematic universe nonsense. It would just be a unique character study, nothing more. Plus, just the idea of a traditional Paper Mario adventure where the villain is inexplicably Eggman is my kind of shitpost energy.)

5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?*

hmm, no, but that's mostly because I don't read much beyond my mutual circle in far cry. however, some mutuals have shone some new light on certain things. Shipping with non-Seeds as a viable option (I know that sounds stupid but I blame John for taking a vice grip on my throat from the first time I played) and uh... shipping with Joe as something that's not completely vile. (i'm sorry, please don't hate me Joe lovers)

7. Is there anything you used to like but can’t stand now?*

Erm. New Dawn gave me complicated feelings about Sharky? Some of his ND dialogue is... uh... questionable for a guy who's now in his 50s. Honestly, even that's a stretch. For the most part, participating in the fandom has only widened my appreciation for the game and its characters.

11. Is there an unpopular character you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?

Faith Seed, Grace Armstrong, Tracey Lader, Kim Rye, and Staci Pratt - fandom seems to throw them all under the bus or ignore them.

Faith seems to get killed off or pushed aside way too much. I think she's as interesting a villain as her 'brothers' and deserves to be seen as more of a threat. She's extremely dangerous and unrepentant about drugging a ton of people against their will until they're entirely lobotomized. I mean, that's some HARDCORE evil.

Grace, Tracey, and Kim... Well, they get ignored and I can take a wild guess at why. It's incredibly unfair because I think they're some of the most interesting Resistance characters.

For a game that's weak on how it treats women, there's several quality female characters that get totally ignored. (Joey, too, but because of one friend's ship, I get a lot of amazing writing for her.)

And Staci... well, that's Skelly's fault.

14. Unpopular opinion about your fandom?

Uhm, I'm not sure tbh. Maybe that I would be cool with not having the Drubman family around? Their quests and characters are... not my favorites.

Also, John's plane jacket is fucking stylish and awesome. Everyone is just jealous.

19. What is the one thing you hate most about your fandom?

that i am so late to the party? that there are so many talented people and I'm intimidated all the time? i... dunno that I actually *hate* anything? But again, I came really late, so I've not been around for any drama or anything.

20. What is the purest ship in the fandom?

Aw, bro, this fandom doesn't really do "pure" lmao. Hope County is a bleak, harsh hellscape. Buuuut, canon ships, I'd say Nick and Kim. (I am a Rye stan, sorry to everyone.) And fanon? 👀 Leah and Joey 👉👈

Fav song:I think there would be something amiss if I didn’t say that my favourite song of all time was a McFly song, it’s just the trouble of choosing which one! it’s a two-way tie between ‘Translyvania’ and ‘Star Girl’ (but honeslty I could choose so many of their song I love them so much.)

Aesthetic: I don’t really know if I have an aesthetic so to speak?? maybe like something bright and sunny but also light colours and glittery sparkles? whatever kind of aesthetic that is???

Fav authors: I guess I would say Non Pratt because I picked up one of her books waaaaay back when I was like 15 or 16 and I’ve read a few of her books which I really enjoyed! I also read the ‘Thursday Murder Club’ by Richard Osman, this year and that was really good, and I haven’t really had the chance to read any of the subsequent books yet.

Random fact:I pretty much ALWAYS have my nails painted (because I found it’s the only thing that stops me from biting them-which I know is a gross habit) and the colour I’m currently wearing is Barry M’s Gelly Hi-Shine Nail Paint in ‘Vanilla Slice’

"The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder": A Revival Which Lives Up to the Original

The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder tells the story of Penny Proud, a 14-year-old Black girl who navigates the 2020s with her ambitious mom, overprotective dad, loving grandmother, troublesome siblings, and loyal school friends.

Reprinted from The Geekiary, my History Hermann WordPress blog, and Wayback Machine. This was the thirty-third article I wrote for The Geekiary. This post was originally published on March 13, 2022.

The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder is a coming-of-age comedy series and animated sitcom by Bruce W. Smith and Ralph Farquhar which began airing on February 23 of this year. It is a revival of The Proud Family, an all-ages animated series that aired on the Disney Channel from 2001 to 2005, and marked the first original animated series on the Disney Channel.

As a warning, this recommendation discusses spoilers for the first four episodes of The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder

The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder centers on Penny Proud (Kyla Pratt), a 14-year-old teenage girl who lives in the town of Smithville with her mom Trudy (Paula Jai Parker), dad Oscar (Tommy Davidson), paternal grandmother Sugar Mama (Jo Marie Payton), her pet dog Puff (audio effects provided by Carlos Alazraqui), and her two younger siblings BeBe (Aiden Dodson) and CeCe (Bresha Webb).

The show also features Penny's enthusiastic but selfish and untrustworthy best friend, Dijonay Jones (Karen Malina White), who likes to gossip. Her antics have often gotten Penny in trouble. Both hang out with Zoey Howzer (Soleil Moon Frye), a smart but timid, shy, and kind White girl, and an Afro-Latine girl, LaCienega Boulevardez (Alisa Reyes) who is beautiful, popular, and an excellent student. Although she is good friends with Dijonay, she is the frenemy of Penny. LaCienega is able to convince her parents, Felix (Carlos Mencia) and Sunset (Maria Canals-Barrera) that she is a sweet and upstanding girl when she is actually snobbish, arrogant, and selfish.

Other supporting characters include Oscar's older brother Bobby Proud (Cedric the Entertainer), an extremely wealthy Black businessman named Wizard Kelly (Aries Spears), Felix's father Papi (Alvaro Gutierrez) who Suga Mama has a crush on, the doctor for the Proud family named Dr. Payne (Kevin Michael Richardson), and the 9-year-old neighbor of the Proud family, Peabo (Cree Summer). There's also the flamboyant gender non-conforming friend of Penny named Michael Collins (EJ Johnson) and former bullies Nubia, Olei, and Gina, who are named the Gross Sisters (voiced by Raquel Lee) who become interested in hip hop, start a rap group, and perform.

New characters in this revival series include Penny's boyfriend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Brown (Asante Blackk), and the Leibowitz-Jenkins family. The latter is headed by Randall (Billy Porter) and Barry (Zachary Quinto). They have two children, a 14-year-old adopted girl named Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins (voiced by Keke Palmer) and her twin brother, Francis “KG” Leibowitz-Jenkins ("A Boogie” Dubose), who is adjusting to life in Smithville.

Apart from the new characters, there is one departure: Sticky Webb. Voiced by Orlando Brown in the original series, he only appears in the first episode when he moved to Japan where his father is getting a new job. Although some fans may have been disappointed in the fact that The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder destroys the dynamic between Dijonay and Sticky, as she continually had a crush on him, it allows for the new characters, Kareem, Randall, Barry, Maya, and KG to become more integrated into the story. In fact, KG becomes a rebound of sorts for Dijonay, who treats him like she treated Sticky.

The opening song of the series is very similar to the original, except this theme song is sung by Joyce Wrice rather than Solange Knowles and Destiny's Child in The Proud Family. This has, understandably, irked some fans, but has also, sadly, led the creators of this series to receive death threats, serving yet another example of people taking things too far. While the new song is not my favorite opening, for an animated series it is definitely catchy and hearkens back to the original.

Compared to the original series, the animation is smoother and cleaner, the characters are more expressive, and the episodes are longer. While episodes in The Proud Family were 20-22 minutes long, in this series, they range from 27 to 30 minutes. This is in part because the series is airing exclusively on Disney+ and doesn't need to accommodate commercials.

Even so, this revival series has some of the same dynamics as the original. Oscar is what makes the series an animated sitcom. Often disciplined by his mother, Suga Mama, his head is shown flying into outer space, thrown into the air comedically, while acting immature, childish, and even hyperactive. Through it all, he is still a well-meaning father to Penny, running a business that creates revolting snacks but somehow manages to stay in business despite it all.

The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder features some of the same themes as the original. Wizard Kelly is still a business mogul who runs for mayor, Bobby is still his ebullient self, even tricking out Trudy's pet ambulance, and Trudy tells Oscar to pull his weight.

On the other hand, Oscar is afraid to see Penny grow up and tries to hold her back, but later listens and realizes that he should give her some independence. Even so, he happens to embarrass her when he tries to recruit Kareem for his basketball team in an attempt to get back at Wizard Kelly. He can be sweet and helpful at other times, telling Penny about Prince and showing her how to play a vinyl disk. In another episode, he is shown as being a gullible fool as he buys a toxic waste dump as the future home of his Snackland amusement park, something which his family ridicules him for, leaving him to sink into the toxic sludge.

In a hint at the fact that the series is a revival, Penny and her friends magically become teenagers overnight. Additionally, scenes from the original series are used when characters have flashbacks to past events, an ingenious way to tie the two series together.

In this series, Penny stays righteous and thinks that everyone is her friend, but admits that Maya is right when she calls her "superficial." Both later become better friends by the show's fourth episode. Unfortunately, it appears that this series is either disregarding or putting aside the wild adventure-comedy film, The Proud Family Movie, with a plot that seems like an episode of Kim Possible or even Totally Spies! which capped the original run of The Proud Family, as Penny is 16-years-old in the series.

In what I expect will be a 10 or 12 episode order, this revival series has a chance to buck what can be described as colorist themes in the original series. Some argued that Dijonay's character in that series indicated that even when animated, the "dark skin girl is designated as the ghetto one" while others went as far as to call for the cancellation of the revival series for promoting racist and colorist caricatures of Black women who have darker skin, mainly citing Dijonay as the biggest exemplar of this issue. This revival series seems to hint that this will be countered. Already, Dijonay's yellow hair was revealed as a wig, and Maya, who has skin as dark as Dijonay, is a strong, passionate girl who stands up for causes. Even so, the blue-black-skinned Gross Sisters are still shown as "ashy" and have a lot of attitude.

There are other hints that this revival series will be different. Farquhar has stated that the show will portray more than a singular "view of Blackness or a Black family" while Smith said it is blazing a path in animation, with elements of the Western, sci-fi, and horror genres. I am somewhat confident that this series will address this more and in a positive way, in a break from the past, even if those on online forums for Black women, like Lipstick Alley, are more skeptical of the series. In that way, the series can more of a "portal for viewers to get an idea of what the world is like or what the world thinks of them," as one critic of the original series wrote in 2018.

Latine characters have a key role in this show, similar to other Disney series like Kim Possible, The Owl House, and the original series. LaCienega is part of an Afro-Latine family, which is still rare in television series, animated and not. Even so, there is the continuing joke that Suga Mama doesn't understand what Papi is saying as he is speaking Spanish. Hopefully, in future episodes, she learns Spanish and this tired joke is not used anymore, so they can have a more genuine relationship.

Similar to how the original series focused on issues such as bullying, cheerleading, self-worth, and friendship, this series has episodes about the inhumanity of zoos, complete with a panda bear named Shuggie (voiced by CeeLo Green) who declares he is a "player" who doesn't want to be saved, the insidious nature of social media influencers who have the ability to "cancel" people, playing basketball, standing up for what you believe in, and remaining true to yourself.

The episode about influencers is altogether different than the cringe-worthy commentary on so-called "cancel culture," really "consequence culture" in an episode of the should-be-forgotten series, The Freak Brothers. The series instead shows Penny denouncing influencers like Makeup Boy (voiced by Bretman Rock) as posers and those who follow them as "sad."

Her rise to power somewhat echoes the episode in the original series, "A Star Is Scorned," where she becomes a star and isolates her friends for fame, believing it is all about her. In the episode in this series, she becomes an influencer, receiving endorsements and popularity. In the process, she "cancels" Makeup Boy after he disses her, and she realizes she can make people buy stuff they can't afford, while people are afraid of getting cancelled by her.

Penny even ends up cancelling LaCienega, shocking her, is able to get rid of everyone in the school, and send away Suga Mama to boot camp. She is later brought down thanks to Maya who hatches a plan which exposes her after Oscar got money from Wizard Kelly, with her friends turning on her, as she loses followers and her influence almost in the blink of an eye.

As she walks away from school in shame, Makeup Boy, whose real name is Sebastian Boyle, is later grateful to her as he was seduced by the power and influence. The lesson at the end seems to be that your family is more important than your friends and will stand by you, as her mom and grandmother forgive Penny after she apologizes. It was somewhat strange to me that Penny's friends threw her away like a used dishrag and never apologized to her for making her like a pariah.

Barry, Randall, and Michael, the three LGBTQ characters who have appeared in the series so far

There is one major change from the original series in The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder: the casual queerness. Not only is Michael now openly gender-conforming and gay, but KG and Maya have two gay dads, Randall and Barry. It's even possible there could be an enemies-to-lovers situation between Penny and Maya, and hopefully, there are "different portrayals of Blackness" and a depiction of the "vast spectrum of Blackness" while the show further explores sexuality and gender with the addition of new character, as Nic of Autostraddle pointed out.

The most recent episode, "Father Figures" focuses on this more than any episode that has aired so far. Maya and KG are teased by those at school after Dijonay tweets that Maya and KG have two dads, and there is an undercurrent of homophobia in the school. Penny rallies to their defense, attempting to joke about broken families, offending Maya, and leading KG to criticize them for making a joke about something that they know nothing about.

Penny later faces homophobia from her dad, who can't explain why she can't hang out around Maya and KG, later claiming he trying to "protect" her, like all the other dads in the neighborhood. despite Trudy, Puff, and Suga Mama strongly disagreeing with him. This comes to a head when he goes to a bank to get a loan and Randall, one of Maya's dads, is a bank manager at Wizard Kelly Bank, and puts the loan away after Oscar reacts with shock to see Randall and Barry kissing.

Luckily, Penny is able to break through this homophobia by standing up to the Gross Sisters, defending Maya, giving a rambling speech. In the end, they all meet at the Leibowitz-Jenkins house, with Oscar apologizing to Randall for being homophobic and getting the loan after all. Everyone seems to come to their unintentional housewarming party, dancing to the disco music, and Oscar is overcome with emotion, beginning to see more of the world through Penny's eyes.

My guess is that there will be more LGBTQ characters in the future, possibly even some among the show's main cast. After all, the series will feature, in future episodes, guest stars like Lizzo, Jaden Smith (as college Myron), Lena Waithe (as college Maya), Al Roker, Lamorne Morris, Brenda Song (as Vanessa Vue), according to the official Disney+ Twitter account. Waithe was previously in a relationship with Alana Mayo, an executive producer of gen:LOCK. Other queer guest stars include Lil Nas X and Jane Lynch according to Out magazine.

Further LGBTQ characters have been hinted at by Farquhar who stated that a lot changed since the original show, saying that this revival series will take on more topical issues rather than having LGBTQ characters referred to in "coded language." He also confirmed that Michael was gay in the original series but that they had to be underhanded in the way this is talked about. Smith added that the show has more than "just one gay person... representing the entire LGBTQ+ spectrum."

The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder has the promise of breaking down barriers through its inclusion of multicultural characters and families, especially those which are part of the LGBTQ, Latine, and Black communities. I fully believe it will address racial issues and other topics, like the original series. No matter how many episodes are remaining until its first season comes to an end, the series will undoubtedly have plotlines that focus on the pull between family togetherness and family conflict, protesting, rumors, popularity, dating, and jealousy.

It is likely there will be episodes on gender equality, women's rights, medicine, vaccines, and animal exploitation, like in the original series. At the same time, it is not known whether there will be a focus on veterinary services, pet care, file sharing, music downloading, homelessness, Black history, Black wealth, or show business, all of which were covered in the original series as well.

Those working on The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder are a talented group of people. Latoya Raveneau, who directed a few episodes, was the showrunner of the animated short series Rise Up, Sing Out, and a storyboarder for Final Space. Tara N. Whitaker, who directed one episode, previously was a prop designer for series such as Kid Cosmic, Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure, The Owl House, and Wonder Over Yonder, and character designer for Middle School Moguls. The series art director, Eastwood Wong, had worked on animated series like Carmen Sandiego, Star vs. the Forces of Evil, and Steven Universe.

Other staff members are new to the animation industry, like show writers Wolf-Rudiger Bloss, Ashley Soto Paniagua, Leo J. Lawrence, and KyLee Evans. Lawrence and Evans previously worked on live-action series before this one, while Paniagua had written for Vida and Fast & Furious Spy Racers. Some worked on the original series, like writer Doreen Spicer, and co-executive producer, Calvin Brown Jr. Breana Williams, the production coordinator, previously worked on Mira: Royal Detective and is currently working on an indie animated series LimeLight as a storyboard revisionist. There are various other talented storyboarders and other employees working on the show as well.

Although there are talented individuals working on the show, it remains to be seen how much Disney can further social equality. The studio's linked with a lot of prejudice in the past and many productions continue to draw "criticism regarding diversity, both onscreen and behind the scenes. After all, Disney CEO Bob Chapek put out a weak statement before the passage of "Don't Say Gay" bill in Florida which bans the teaching of LGBTQ topics, says schools should not encourage sexual orientation or gender identity to be discussed, and allows parents to sue schools for having such discussions. Chapek later scrambled to act like he cared, after the law had already passed through both houses of the Florida legislature and the Florida governor, who has been a big proponent of the bill, falsely claimed it wouldn't harm LGBTQ people.

Putting aside the problematic nature of Disney for a second, and focusing on the show, I can say with full confidence that I recommend The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. Although I wasn't completely clicking or vibing with the show at first, by the fourth episode it has really pulled me in.

The series is currently streaming on Disney+. Episode 5 will debut on the Wednesday of this week, March 16, 2022.

S*Glass’s solo sets are live collages of different batches of selected audio that combine electroacoustics, processed found sound and noises, voice, and chance operations. The playing of non-musical objects is sometimes incorporated (dental floss, aluminum foil, wind-up toys, metal lunch box, cabbage). Self-shot backing videos are mostly textural, made with multiple layers that slowly wobble out of sync, jump cuts, and primitive animation. The overall effect is one of surreal disorientation. He is a founder of Bren’t Lewiis Ensemble (a large non-musical music group begun in the early 1980s), and Glands of External Secretion (a duo with rock musician Barbara Manning since the early 1990s). From the late 1980s until 2004, he was the main driver behind the magazine Bananafish.

SAILOR BEWARE

Lara Allen's solo work under the name Sailor Beware combines sound collage, spoken word, and vaudeville in a kaleidoscopic portrayal of her experiences in Cincinnati public schools, a troubled teen industry cult, and a children’s psychiatric hospital. She was a member of the group Caroliner and also fronted Heavenly Ten Stems, who specialized in covers of Asian pop and rock tunes, has appeared on an album by Secret Chiefs 3, and was the off-the-hook screeching front-person of legendary Ohio psycho-rock band Manwich. She currently teaches at Pratt in Brooklyn.

it's spooky month, what's the scariest plane to you?

Oooh, that's an interesting question! I was initially of three minds on this: should I go with spookiest name? Spookiest looking? Or the one that straight-up scares me the most.

I have some ideas for all three:

Spookiest Name: The McDonnell CF-101 Voodoo (oooh, scary)

The McDonnell CF-101 'Voodoo' was an all-weather interceptor adopted by Canada's branch of NORAD as a replacement for the obsolescent CF-100 'Canuck', after Diefenbaker killed the Avro CF-105 'Arrow' (which a lot of people are still very angry about) their main armament consisted of the AIR-2A 'Genie' unguided nuclear tipped rocket (who's adoption caused a scandal that directly caused the collapse of the Diefenbaker government)

A plane called Voodoo letting a nuclear Genie out of the bottle? Now that's spooky!

Spookiest Looking: The Flying Tiger's P-40 Warhawk

Since time immemorial, humans have been decorating their weaponry with the image of fearsome predators, and the P-40 Warhawks belonging to the American Volunteer Squadron in China (better known as the infamous 'Flying Tigers') are no exception. With their infamous and terrifying "sharktooth" paint schemes, these planes gave good service supporting the Nationalist Chinese Government against the invading Imperial Japanese Army. Many of the United States' top air aces of the Second World War started out in the Flying Tigers.

Scariest overall: the Gee-Bee R-series Air Racers

This was a very difficult choice, there's been plenty of aircraft that were infamously difficult and dangerous to fly, for instance, specifically in West German service, the F-104 'Starfighter' (Seriously, Stuka, why is that? Y'all seem like the only people who had any serious troubles with that machine) but I think I settled on the scariest of them all. The infamous GeeBee Air Racers

What's that? You don't think they look scary? Think they look like a sewer pipe with wings?

...yeah, that's what people thought at the time too.

Designed around the then-brand-new Pratt and Whitney R-1340 Wasp radial engine, delivering well over 800 horsepower, they were built for one purpose and one purpose only: to have the absolute most engine possible for the absolute least plane... At the expense of literally everything else. Weighing only 1840 lbs (843 kg) dry, they were built to dominate the air races of the 1930's. Piloted to victory by Jimmy Doolittle (yes, that Jimmy Doolittle) in the 1932 Thompson Trophy Race, easily lapping all but one other aircraft and setting an official record of 296.3 mph. It was destroyed in a fatal crash one year later, killing pilot Russell Broadman.

Doolittle was quoted as saying "I didn't trust the little monster... flying it was like balancing a pencil on the tip of your finger". The wreckage of the R-1 was rebuilt with parts from her (also-crashed, though non-fatally) sistership, the R-2, and turned into what was dubbed the "Gee-Bee long tail". It was purchased by Cecil Allen after it was crashed yet again (forcing it's builders, the Grandville brothers, to declare bankruptcy) who redesigned the wing and added a new, larger fuel tank. Warned strongly by the Granvilles to not fly with that tank filled as it would disrupt the center of gravity, Allen didn't heed the warnings. On the morning of the 1935 Bendix trophy race, he took off from Burbank with all tanks full, wallowed, and crashed into a field just beyond the runway, killing him instantly and writing a sad end to the sega of the R-series GeeBees.

She, like many at the time, was inspired two years earlier by the movie “Top Gun.” That's when she decided to become a fighter pilot. She began basic flight training at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola and in 1988 she was nominated for "Glamour" magazine's “Top Ten College Women.” Throughout her flying career, Cummings became one of the first women to operate combat aircraft, flying the F/A – 18 Hornet in the VC-5 Squadron nicknamed “Checkertails.” In 1994 she continued her education with the Navy, obtaining a Masters in Space Systems Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. She loved to fly but was troubled, as she saw one pilot every month die in an aircraft crash throughout the Gulf War in non-combat deaths and training exercises. She wanted to become part of the solution and figure out how the design of the aircraft was affecting unnecessary pilot casualties. Cummings was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1999 after 10 years of service. She earned a Ph.D. in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia in 2004 and then spent 10 years as a research professor at MIT. Recently, Cummings worked as a professor in the Duke University Pratt School of Engineering and the Duke Institute of Brain Sciences. She was also the director of the Humans and Autonomy Laboratory and Duke Robotics. She sought to better understand human-unmanned vehicle interaction and the social and policy impacts of unmanned vehicles in modern society. She also taught courses in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Material Science, Computer Science and other initiatives at Duke University. As of January 2023, she has adopted a new role teaching in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science at George Mason University. Catfishing on CatNet by Naomi Kritzer - A very fun and quick read about a sentient AI still in its "juvenile" stage, who finds friendship in a teen forum it is set up to moderate. Things get dangerous when one of the bloggers (of cat pics, hence the odd title) gets in IRL trouble, and the AI has to use all their skills to try to save them from a distance - hacking into self-driving cars and mapping software and all. It doesn't hold back on the high-tech computer hijinks, which was a lot of fun. 

Every Little Piece of My Heart by Non Pratt* -  No one writes British teenagers as well as Non Pratt. Authentic, effortlessly diverse and unashamedly thirsty, her characters jump off the page and into my heart. I really enjoyed the mystery of this novel, with four strangers (plus a precocious little sister) coming together over a mutual friendship with Freya, who we never really get to meet. They were a lot of fun, and it made me miss the final days of school before summer holiday, when nothing much gets done except signing shirts, gossiping and watching films in class.

Look by Zan Romanoff - A sun-soaked LA group of influencers spend their time posting about glorious parties and exploring a half-renovated hotel, successfully hiding the real emptiness they feel. I love the connection to old age Hollywood glamour - fans of the You Must Remember This podcast will really like this. 

A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine - Takes the ghosts-living-inside-someones-head of A SKINFUL OF SHADOWS and smushes it together with the cultural alienation of the VORKOSIGAN SAGA and the complex courtly intrigue of THE GOBLIN EMPEROR. Best of 2020.

Upright Women Wanted by Sarah Gailey* -  A brilliant, diverse future Western examining the freedom of information through librarians who smuggle restricted publications by horse and cart around the South American deserts. The details about the authoritarian regime are lightly given - this is very character and fight focussed - and this was a fun and exciting read. Also huge amounts of LGBT representation of all shades, including a non-binary character.

Who: Lizzie Olsen & Chris Pratt { @prattyprattpratt-town ) 

Summary: After a night of awards parties, Lizzie & Chris return to Lizzie’s house to find her home up in flames. Literally. Like..on fire.

Lizzie: Lizzie was honestly just glad that the awards was over. She had spent the last two months anxious about the ceremony, even though she knew her category was a tight one and her chances were..basically non existent. It was still very, very exciting being nominated and now she could add 'Emmy Nominated' to just about everything she does going forward. She may not have left the ceremony with an Emmy, but she had gotten the chance to get all dressed up and spent the night at a few different after parties with Chris, so over all it was a pretty great night. As she dropped down into the passenger seat of Chris' car, she instantly reached down to tug the heels from her feet, letting out a groan. "Next time, I'm just wearing slippers. I don't even care." Dropping the shoes onto the floor by her feet she leaned back against the seat, relaxing. It was already passed midnight, and even though it was late she didn't find herself that tired. "You wanna come in when we get to my place? I weirdly wanna bake cookies. I have that easy pre-made stuff you just pop in the oven." Lizzie let out a laugh, already looking forward to being able to get out of this dress and into her pajamas. "Thanks for coming with me tonight. I know you just did it for the swag bags, but..", she teased with a grin in his direction.

Pratt: Big events were always stressful, even if you weren’t even nominated. Even so, Chris viewed it as his job to make sure Lizzie had a good time, Emmy or no Emmy. After helping a heeled Lizzie into his truck, he walked to the other side and climbed into the drivers seat. “I don’t know how you guys wear them all night anyway,” he shook his head with a small chuckle. Chris started the car and began driving towards her home. “Yea, I’m cool with that. As long as I can eat one or two of those little squares of cookies…like pre-baking.” He looked over to the girl on his right, “what? Everyone knows the dough is better than the actual cookies.”

Lizzie: "I don't know how we wear them all night either. It should be against the law. It feels sexist somehow." She was only half joking, but she did wear flats more often than not if she had a choice. Tonight just called for more of a fancy get up and she was okay with that since it was kind of rare in her life. "Hey--you will hear no complaining from me. I've had nights where the dough doesn't even make it into the oven." She said with a laugh. Rummaging through her clutch she found the hair tie she had put in there earlier when she put the finishing touches on her shorter hair, using it to pull some hair back into a pony tail even though it was so short, it really didn't matter. As they got closer to her house and near her street, she saw a fire truck turn and head down her road. She didn't think much of it, silently hoping whoever was in trouble was okay.

Pratt: He laughed lightly at her comment, but found himself nodding in agreement with her. Chris kept his eyes on the road as he made his way back to her home. Seeing the fire truck he gave it a small glance as he slowed and drove past it. "Wonder whats going on," he said casually to Lizzie, only slight interest in his voice. As they made their way further up the street he saw more fire trucks pulled to the side of the road and his brow furrowed in confusion. "Must be something big," he commented. But before he could speculate what it could possibly be he saw the flames ahead of them and his eyes widened. "Is that your neighbors?" he asked, glancing over to her, still not able to make out exactly what house was actively on fire.

Lizzie: Lizzie couldn't help but feel some anxiety kick in when the got closer to her house and she noticed how basically by her house was blocked off, and there were more than a couple fire trucks on the scene. Even though she felt Chris' eyes on her she couldn't take hers off the flames in front of them. "I can't tell.." the car was barley stopped by the baricade that was set up, and Lizzie was out of the car not even thinking of or worrying about her shoes. As she got closer, the blondes eyes widened when she got a good look at what was happening and it was /her/ house the flames were coming from, specifically the entire top floor of her house. A firefighter moved to stand in front of her to block her from going any further, the girl finally tearing her eyes from the fire to look at him. "That-that's my house." She could barley get the words out, a wave of shock washing over her from what she was seeing.

Pratt: Chris slowly approached the police/fire barricade, moved his truck to the side of the road, and shifted it into park. Before he could open his door, Lizzie was out of the car and heading past the blockage. It didn't take long for the man to climb out of the car and follow after her, "Hey, I think we sho--" he was about to say that they should be behind the barricade when he saw which house was actually at the center of the action. The sight had stopped him in his track and when he finally tore his eyes away, he saw a man holding Lizzie back from advancing further towards the house. Chris moved forward quickly and put his arm around Lizzie's waist, pulling her towards him so the firefighter could get back to work. "Liz, we can't go up there," he said, trying to keep his voice soft, he couldn't imagine what was going through her mind at that moment. His eyes scanned the people around them and it didn't take long before he'd lightly grabbed the arm of a police office to get their attention. "Excuse me," he said, pulling his arm back, "Can you tell us anything about what happened here? This is her house," he told the office, gesturing to Lizzie.

Lizzie: She honesty didn't know what to think, say or do in this moment as all she could see was her house being engulfed in flames that they were working to put out. She barley comprehended when Chris was next to her, or when he told her she couldn't get any closer right now. What the hell had happened? She hadn't been cooking all day, it wasn't like she left the oven on. Was there a gas leak of some sort? Lizzie looked to her neighbors houses to see if maybe it had started there, but they stood untouched unlike her own. Finally snapping out of her thoughts she heard Chris speaking to a police officer, the girl looking to the officer. The gentleman shook his head, "We don't know for sure yet what the cause was. We still have some guys in there trying to get this thing out, and after that we'll know more." His eyes moved from Chris to Lizzie giving her a sympathetic look. "I'm sorry that this is happening to you. Stay put and I'll be over in a minute to take down your contact information, okay?" He touched her arm as he passed, heading back over to his patrol car. In that moment Lizzie did the only thing her brain could think of doing and that was--laughing. The girl laughed, bringing her hands up to cover her face for a moment. "You know-an Emmy really would have made this situation easier." Coping with sarcasm and humor was always her go to and even now, even when most of her life was quite literally up in flames, it was all she could do.

Pratt: Pratt listened to everything the office was saying. How could no one know how this happened? Logically he understood that they'd need to look into what happened after the flames had subsided, but in the moment it just didn't seem like a good enough answer. Even so, he jus watched as the man walked away from them, leaving them alone to stare at the scene once again. He didn't really know what to say. What could he say? After all, nothing was going to reverse time and make it so the fire didn't happen. Before he could even make an attempt at finding the right words, she was speaking. He let out an automatic chuckle at what she'd said, his eyes looking to the smoke bellowing into the night sky. "I-" he started before stopping. "I don't know what to say right now," he said finally, giving up on trying to find words that he was sure didn't exist. "I'm sorry we came back to this," he shook his head at the whole situation.

Lizzie: The laughter only lasted a few moments and once it was gone, she could feel the tears welling up in her eyes. It seemed silly to start crying now or something like this. It wasn't like anyone was hurt, and she was well enough off that she could replace what had been ruined-hopefully, she didn't want to start thinking about her family photos or the momentos she had. The thought of them just brought on new tears and she couldn't really break down right now like this, here. Quickly wiping a few tears before they could fall, Lizzie shook her head, her eyes landing on Chris. She needed something to ground her, to not completely push her over the edge. "Can-Can we just go? I'll give him my info or whatever, but I can't just stand here and watch." Lizzie couldn't just stand there and watch her house burn to the ground. She honestly didn't even know where she would go, what she was going to do tomorrow, but she couldn't think about that in the moment.

Pratt: Looking over to Lizzie he saw the tears in her eyes despite the fact that she was trying not to cry. He slipped an arm over her shoulders and pulled her into a sort of half hug. He wasn't sure if it would do anything to actually comfort her but it was the only way he could think of to at least try. "Yea," he nodded, completely understanding what she was saying. "Lets go find that cop and we can get out of here. We'll just go back to my place, alright?" he asked. With Lizzie by his side, he began making his way back towards his truck and almost ran into the officer they were looking for. "Officer, is there anyway we can leave her information with you? She really just kind of wants to get out of here.." he trailed off, looking over to Lizzie so she could take over given that it was her they'd need to contact in the coming days.

Lizzie: Lizzie leaned into Chris for a moment as he lead her back over towards his truck, trying to find at least some sort of comfort in him. She was thankful that he had offered to take her to his place. Sure she didn't think he would leave her on the side of the road but right now she wasn't thinking clearly about a lot of things. Looking to the office she nodded as he began asking her questions about her name, number, and if she had insurance or anything like that. They had only been at the scene for maybe fifteen to twenty minutes but by the time Lizzie climbed back into Chris' car, she felt like she had been hit by a truck. "I'm sorry." She said instantly, suddenly feeling the weight of now being a burden because of this disaster.

Pratt: Chris took a step back and let Lizzie giver her information to the police officer. He listened as the man said they didn't know when they'd back to her with more information but they would call her as soon as they had information to share. With that, the pair made their way back to his truck. He pulled the door open for her and closed it behind her once she was safely inside before making his way to the drivers side and getting in. He started the car and began reversing out of the area until he could turn around and drive normally. "What're you apologizing to me for?" he asked, a bit confused by her words. "Its me whos sorry you have to go through all this. Its crazy and you don't deserve it.." he told her seriously.

Lizzie: Lizzie frowned, glancing over to him for a moment before she looked out the window. "It's crazy how shit just happens to you. You are driving down the road and suddenly your car is hit by a truck. You're walking minding your own business and then your falling, breaking a bone or two. You come home and your house is gone. How-", she paused for a moment, trying to not break down right there. "..how does someone even prepare for that?" She was honestly just thinking out loud and didn't expect him to have any answers. Maybe she just needed to talk her way through some of what she was feeling. Sniffling, Lizzie wrapped her arms around herself as she settled back into the seat. "I'm sorry because now you're nice and you're going to let me stay at your place tonight and yeah, that makes me feel guilty a little."

Pratt: He listened as she spoke, he could tell that nothing she was saying in that moment actually required an answer, so he didn't give one. Not that he actually could say anything, she was right. Sometimes life just happened and you had to deal with it. "Yea, you're also my best friend. You think I'm gonna make you go stay at a hotel or something?" It was a rhetorical question because they both knew the answer. And fact was, she'd do the same thing for him. "Theres nothing to feel guilty for," he reassured her, "This is what we do, right? We're here for each other. No matter what."

Lizzie: Slowly nodding her head, Lizzie knew he was right and if the roles would be reversed she would be bending over backwards to help him and yell at him at any type of apology that he tried to give her. "You're right..I know you're right. I just..I don't know what to think right now, or do." She wrinkled her nose, glancing down at her dress. "I don't even have clothes." She chuckled. "I have no clothes probably. Like at all. That's..that's great." Sighing she dropped her head back against the head rest, closing her eyes for a few moments. "I just want to take a shower and drink. Maybe even drink in the shower." She looked over to him, giving him a small smile in an attempt to show that she was at least a little okay.

Pratt: He hadn't even thought about clothes or any of the day to day things that were typically gathered over time that she would now have to reacquire once everything was sorted out. "Don't worry about any of that tonight. You'll sleep in one of my shirts or something and we'll deal with the rest tomorrow." He didn't really know what that would look like, but he knew they'd figure it out. "As for the rest of it, we can make that happen," he offered her a small smile. "I think I have a full bottle of that wine you like, I think its a red. And as always, beer. Whatever you want," he told her.

Lizzie: She nodded a bit, giving him a small smile. She honestly didn't know what she would do with out Chris on a normal day, let alone a night where it felt like her world was falling apart around her. "If it makes me at least sort of forget about tonight, I'll be happy with whatever you have." She did just want to forget. She wanted to pretend at least for a little while that tonight had never even happened.
